00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays!
00:07 Today we're taking a look at the most important details to know before picking up Super Mario
00:11 Brothers Wonder.
00:23 Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:27 the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:31 A brand new Mario
00:39 In case you missed the bombshell, long time Mario voice actor Charles Martinet will no
00:44 longer be voicing the character.
00:46 Martinet has been with Nintendo since Super Mario 64.
00:49 Not only that, but he also voiced Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi across many games, so it really
00:56 is the end of an era.
01:02 However, that doesn't mean he's done with Nintendo.
01:09 He'll now be taking on the role of Nintendo ambassador, and will still go to plenty of
01:13 fan conventions.
01:15 In what could only be described as extreme bittersweetness, players realized his last
01:20 Mario-related gig was for the 2023 animated movie, where he played the plumber's father.
01:31 Nintendo has kept quiet about the new voice for the brothers, but they've got some big
01:35 boots to fill.
01:43 The Cast
01:50 In most 2D Mario games, it's safe to assume who you'll be playing as.
01:54 But for Wonder, there are a couple of surprises thrown in with the usual suspects.
01:59 With Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toadette, two Toads, four Yoshis, and Nabbit, it's
02:06 the largest cast of characters of any Mario platformer.
02:15 Not for nothing, but this marks Daisy's first time as a playable character in a mainline
02:19 Mario, outside of the mobile spinoff Super Mario Run.
02:24 Director Shiro Mori, who also helmed Switch port New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, stated
02:29 that his daughters often argue over who gets to be Peach in other games.
02:33 By adding Daisy, he's solving one of his own problems.
02:42 Easy Mode
02:47 While we've already talked about the cast of characters we'll be able to play as, two
02:50 of them deserve a little bit more time.
02:53 Yoshi and his different colored counterparts, as well as Nabbit, essentially act as this
02:57 game's easy mode.
02:59 If they get hit by an enemy or hazard, they'll flash for a second but take no damage.
03:08 They can still die by falling into a hole or lava, but that seems to be the only way.
03:13 Furthermore, Yoshi retains his flutter jump and ability to eat basically anything.
03:18 The majority of the cast all look to control exactly the same, but these two might get
03:23 delegated to younger players.
03:30 A New Kingdom
03:38 Similar to how Peach was playable in Super Mario 3D World due to Bowser finally attacking
03:43 a kingdom other than hers, we're again heading to a new locale in Wonder.
03:48 The game opens on Mario and co. attending a celebration in the Flower Kingdom, where
03:52 they've been invited by Prince Florian.
03:54 But then Bowser attacks with a Wonder Flower, causing all kinds of disastrous effects.
04:08 Like many others in the series, the game features 7 main worlds, though Nintendo has naturally
04:13 kept some of them secret.
04:15 There are also usually much more challenging worlds unlocked after completing the main
04:19 story, and we can't wait to see what skill-testing gauntlets the team has cooked up this time.
04:33 The Elephant in the Room
04:38 Most Mario games have power-ups, with one acting as a sort of mascot for each entry.
04:43 Joining the likes of the Super Cape and the Catsuit is the elephant fruit seen across
04:48 trailers.
04:49 While in this form, players can break blocks and attack enemies with their trunk.
04:53 You can even swat away spinies dropped by Lakitu with ease.
04:59 Additionally, the elephant form can dash across larger gaps and store water for enemies and
05:05 obstacles.
05:06 While Nintendo has shown off the elephant the most, it isn't the only one we've seen.
05:10 Alongside some classic power-ups, we'll also get a bubble flower that traps enemies and
05:15 creates temporary platforms.
05:18 Super Mario Galaxy 2's drill has also been adapted for the 2D landscape.
05:29 Wonder Flowers
05:36 Super Mario Bros. Wonder seemingly gets its name from the Wonder Flowers.
05:41 Found all across levels, grabbing one of these produces a different effect.
05:45 So far, we've seen them turn characters into Goombas, cause a herd of enemies to stampede
05:49 through a level, change your perspective, cause parts of the environment to act differently,
05:55 and a whole lot more.
06:00 Not only do they give each level a feeling of randomness and discovery, but they can
06:04 also lead to secret exits.
06:07 Director Shiro Mori claims that more than 2,000 ideas of Wonder Effects were compiled
06:13 and considered by the team.
06:14 No matter what area of the game they were working on.
06:24 A Different Approach
06:33 In this day and age, it seems every other month we hear about another development studio
06:39 forced into crunch to make a deadline.
06:41 But with Wonder, Nintendo did things differently.
06:44 Not only did players not know of its existence until a June 2023 direct, a few months before
06:49 launch, but the team was reportedly never given a release window to aim for.
06:54 No deadline was enforced at all.
07:02 Instead the team got to take its time making exactly what they wanted.
07:06 While this did lead to a longer development period, it also means the team didn't have
07:10 to cut or rush through any of their ideas.
07:24 Badges
07:34 Power-ups and Wonder Flowers aren't the only way to change gameplay in the Flower Kingdom.
07:39 Players will also be able to collect badges, which they can equip to whatever character
07:43 they're playing as for a variety of effects.
07:46 You can earn them by completing certain challenges or purchasing them from an NPC on the map.
07:57 Some badges are passive, like one that turns a character invisible to both enemies and
08:02 the player.
08:03 Others are active, like one that lets Mario use his cap to glide and slow his fall.
08:08 The third category is the Expert Badge, which Nintendo did not show off, but the game's
08:12 official site states they'll give your character an "advanced skill," whatever that means.
08:27 Playing Online
08:33 When most people think of multiplayer Mario, they naturally think of local co-op.
08:38 And while that's obviously an inclusion here, Wonder will also come with online functionality.
08:44 Playing online will show so-called "shadows" of other players on the world map and in levels.
08:50 While your progress will be kept separate, players can share items, revive others if
08:54 they go down, and place standees that can revive them if no one else is around.
09:03 Being helpful earns you heart points, though it's unclear what these are used for other
09:11 than signifying that you're a nice person.
09:13 You can also create rooms to play online with friends in a similar fashion, except that
09:17 you can challenge everyone to a speedrun on any level.
09:26 Release Info
09:34 Much like Metroid Dread, Super Mario Bros. Wonder was announced only a few months before
09:39 its release date.
09:40 Fans don't have much longer to wait, as the game launches on October 20, 2023, though
09:45 it will have some competition with Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
09:53 For the collectors, or for anyone looking to upgrade, Nintendo is also releasing a new
09:58 OLED Switch on October 6th.
10:01 However, the Mario Red model is a little basic, being a solid color with only a hidden Mario
10:06 silhouette and some coins.
10:08 Regardless, Wonder will be the first traditional 2D Mario since New Super Mario Bros. U, which
10:14 originally launched on the Wii U in 2012.
10:17 Whatever it holds, we're looking forward to exploring its wondrous levels.
10:22 And Super Mario Bros. Wonder launches on the Nintendo Switch system October 20th.
10:28 How excited are you to play Mario's latest?
10:33 And which character will you be playing as?
