00:00The notion of a social contract has been used by some to overwrite the provisions of the
00:07federal constitution.
00:10This is what Sabah activist and political commentator Johan Arifin Samad said, adding
00:16that the concept had been politically weaponised to compel non-Malays to honour it.
00:22Johan said he wanted people in Sabah and Sarawak to be aware of how rogue peninsular politicians
00:29are using the social contract to subjugate the Borneo states.
00:34He emphasised that Sabah and Sarawak are equal partners in forming Malaysia and helped to
00:39form the federation, without the baggage of the social contract.
00:44The social contract was originally the title of a book by the 18th century French philosopher
00:50Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
00:52It was revived in the 1980s by UMNO politician Abdullah Ahmad, who was the first to publicly
00:59discuss the Ketuanan Melayu ideology.
