Some Gen Z voters in Arizona decided and issue-driven ahead of upcoming election
For some first-time voters in Arizona, the upcoming presidential election is not about party affiliation, but about the issues they believe will define their future. On Nov. 1, 2024, several groups of election canvassers at the Arizona State University campus were trying to talk to young people about the importance of voting, but many would walk past without stopping, despite bags of crisps, sweets and election stickers on offer for those engaging. "A lot of people just want to be left alone," Sawyer Routt who works for a non-partisan canvassing group told Reuters.

00:00How do you mind helping me take a photo today?
00:04Everyone helping me take a photo today?
00:08Girls are actually taking photos.
00:10Really?
00:11I said, I know.
00:12Taking a photo today?
00:13I don't know.
00:14Have fun.
00:15Bye.
00:16I'm already pretty.
00:17Not right now, I would say, is the average response.
00:44Most people have already been bombarded with spam texts.
00:47You know, they've got clipboard people coming after them.
00:51So a lot of people just want to be left alone.
01:13If you separate whatever your opinion might be about him,
01:17I think that his economic policy is very sound.
01:20I think that putting tariffs on nations that try to push their products into our country,
01:29it's a smart thing because ultimately what it does is it promotes businesses to do business in America.
01:45As young people, we actually just want to see what the ideas are.
01:48And I think podcasts, long-form podcasts with candidates,
01:52it's been really helpful to actually learn who that person is.
01:58And it also allows them to clarify the record.
02:00Everything gets taken out of context when it's just this little tiny soundbite.
02:04But long-form conversation is, OK, they may have said this,
02:08but what is the context surrounding what they actually said?
02:34Sometimes while I'm on Google looking at purchases or something,
02:40I'll get a little news alert and I'll click on that and I'll just start reading it.
02:44Or just at work, sometimes we'll be working and we'll just be talking about our economy,
02:48our presidency and stuff like that.
02:55Just better living.
02:58Gas going down or groceries going down and rent going down.
03:02Because rent is killing me big time.
03:10So, I mean, for me personally, I'm a lot more concerned about our economy than anything.
03:15So that's the main, if I'm hearing someone talk about at least some sort of economic plan,
03:21that's what I'm looking for because I'm concerned about the future of our economy.
03:25There's no reason for two Americans to be disagreeing about something so much that they hate each other
03:36just because they have differing opinions on an issue.
03:39I think that's dumb.
03:41I think it should be more focused on issues than fighting an enemy,
03:46an enemy that doesn't really exist.
03:48It's just other people with other opinions.
03:56So that's what's bad. I get my news through social media.
04:00And I feel bad about it because everyone's like, I know you can't get the right stuff,
04:04but yeah, sadly, I do get my news through social media.
04:14Yeah, it's something that I keep in mind because I want the leader that's leading us
04:20or the person that's representing our country to also have the same view,
04:24which is that everyone gets to decide what they want to do with themselves.
04:27It's a free country, so they should follow that as well when it comes to people making decisions.
