Los Angeles election officials on high alert, with thousands of ballots already counted
With just one week to go until the US election, hundreds of thousands of ballots are flooding into ballot processing centers around the country as millions of Americans cast their votes early.
At a ballot processing center in southern California, election workers are busy processing and counting the ballots of Los Angeles County voters.
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is responsible for transporting ballots to the processing center and providing K-9 units.
According to Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan, security and transparency are their top priority as Election Day approaches.
Polls have shown Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are neck and neck. Given the close match, the candidates' efforts to ensure that their supporters actually cast ballots will likely be key in determining the winner.

00:00Sounds of running and running
00:24Sound of rain
00:35Sound of rain
00:44There's a narrative around the country about the security of the elections process, and
01:12we want to be sure that voters have the confidence that we have a process that's going to protect
01:17both them, our staff, and also their ballots in this process.
02:17That's all the ballots here.
02:20In this election, by the time we certify, I think that could be in excess of three million
02:26ballots.
02:27Now, whether we have all of those in on election night is a question, and that's why we're
02:31encouraging voters to vote early and give us the opportunity to make sure that we have
02:34the bulk of those ballots in our count on election night.
02:47The first part of the process is to have the canine units scan those ballots to identify
02:56if there is anything in there which would be a piece of mail with a suspicious product
03:03or substance in it.
03:05That enables us to, if that were to happen, to isolate that and go into an investigative
03:10process, but it also protects our environment so that we don't have to shut down the operation
03:14and we can continue to provide the services that we need to have the ballots processed
04:20We, as the County of Los Angeles, take security for what we're doing here extremely serious.
04:29In a region as diverse as Los Angeles County, public confidence in a fair, transparent election
04:36process is essential.
04:39But I am aware that some of our residents, based on community input, have some concerns
04:44about safety as it relates to voting.
04:47Election safety is a top priority for us in Los Angeles County, specifically with the
04:51Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
04:54And we are committed to a fair process, free of intimidation or free of interference.
05:01To clarify, though, I do want to say that there's no credible threats here in Los Angeles
05:06County to polling locations or our polling workers, but we're continuing to monitor the
05:12situation.
05:13Our deputies will securely transport the sealed ballots.
05:43That was mentioned earlier throughout the day to all the voting centers and processing
05:47centers by both patrol cars and by helicopter.
05:52Again, we do that every year.
05:54We're very good at it.
05:55On election day, we will be on heightened alert to ensure the safety and security of
06:00all of our residents and polling locations.
06:04And I want to make this clear.
06:06We will not tolerate any actions from individuals who seek to either intimidate or disrupt our
06:14democratic process.
