00:00Here's today's Derbyshire Times video bulletin.
00:03A Derbyshire family has unveiled a giant 150 kilogram
00:07homegrown pumpkin as the centerpiece
00:09of their Halloween display.
00:11Full-time carer Stephen Turner, his wife Karen,
00:14and their 11-year-old son Dion have been growing
00:16the monster squash in their back garden
00:18in Whitwell for several months.
00:20Stephen said, it was exceeding anything I expected.
00:23This year's been very bad for pumpkins
00:25and a lot of farmers' crops have failed.
00:27It's been a bit hard to get it on any scales,
00:29but according to the measurements I've estimated,
00:31it's about 334 pounds give or take.
00:34To achieve something over 300 pounds
00:35is nothing short of a miracle.
00:38After Halloween, Stephen hopes to share his success
00:40with anyone else who wants to try
00:41growing their pumpkin in a string.
00:43He said, the seeds will be collected
00:45and I will offer them to allotment holders in schools.
00:48The flesh will go in the compost heap
00:49and be used for next year's vegetables.
00:52The daft thing is, I hate eating pumpkins.
00:54We've got a house full of pumpkin ornaments.
00:56I love looking at them and growing them,
00:57but I don't like eating them.
01:01A charity golf day organized
01:03by Derbyshire-based roofing firm, Advance Roofing,
01:06has proved to be a terrific event,
01:07raising over 3,500 pounds for Treetops Hospice.
01:11Suppliers and local businesses swap their day jobs
01:13for the greens at one of the UK's premier golf destinations,
01:17the Forest of Arden Golf Club,
01:18for 18 holes followed by an auction.
01:21The money raised will help Treetops,
01:22the hospice for South Derbyshire and the city of Derby,
01:25to take care of people with life-limiting illnesses
01:28and their family.
01:29Lisa Hartshorn, who is financial director
01:31at Advance Roofing, said,
01:32it was the first time we organized a corporate roof day
01:35and I can't believe how successful it was.
01:37Thanks to the teams who took part
01:38and the suppliers who donated prizes,
01:40we've raised an amazing 3,590 pounds for Treetops.
01:45We're so pleased with how it went
01:46that we were making it an annual event
01:48in support of Treetops.
