00:00Hello and welcome back to the Marching On Together Leeds United podcast. We are back
00:21after a small hiatus, you know, international break does its thing unfortunately, yes. There's
00:29never a lot to talk about to be honest during the international break but we are back and back
00:33with a bang because of course Leeds won on Friday night and we'll go straight to you Lee, as always.
00:38It was just a good performance wasn't it Sheffield United of course a promotion contender this season
00:43no doubt about that but Leeds were ruthless and efficient I thought in their 2-0 win. Yeah it was
00:50an excellent performance and it was very much the sort of performance which left you thinking you
00:53know if they play like that every week or every game then realistically they should go up. I mean
00:58that's a very simple thing to say but I mean that's the way it sort of looked and the way it
01:02felt and you've got to remember the strength of the opposition they were playing against Sheffield
01:05United and you almost had to look twice at the stats to think to remember that they hadn't
01:09conceded in six games you know. I mean that's some run is that and obviously yeah right well so
01:14it's who can score one against them is obviously an achievement based on that and obviously Leeds
01:18only scored two but they could have scored more and it was just a very, very good performance.
01:22There was a couple of spells at the start Sheffield United started reasonably well, big physical team
01:26and you wondered sort of how that would play out you know obviously Kiefer Moore up front and
01:29obviously Joe Roden and Pascal dealt with him really well and all the other threats and there's
01:33a brief spell in the second half where they came back into it a little bit but by and large Leeds
01:36just dominated and that very much is reflected in the stats you know 13 shots compared to five,
01:41four on target compared to none that's another big start obviously Sheffield United unable to
01:45get one single shot on target that's not to say they didn't have chances because they had a couple
01:48but nowhere near as many as Leeds and 55 percent possession compared to 45 and all these stats as
01:55we know don't matter the only stat that matters is the one in the top corner but but for once that
01:58stat well not for once because Leeds won a lot of games but an awful lot of time we've seen you know
02:03the stats sort of like not sort of matched up in the scoreline but this time it did and it's
02:07I think two nil you know it could have been more obviously and a very, very good performance nil
02:11nil at half time and they should have been in front at half time really a couple of chances
02:14there Ramazani denied by a very, very good save in particular of course you had the old Ellen Road
02:19eruption as Leeds finally scored from a corner and even chants about that from the stands which was
02:23nice to see I mean Daniel Farker did say the other week that it was coming it didn't feel
02:27like that really but you know so finally got one there great finish from Pascal even though he said
02:32it came off his shin so what it went in the net and then obviously you know Matteo Joseph and Joel
02:36Peru combining with Joseph's score on the second goal so really, really good win against a very
02:42good side Leeds you know and Chris Wilder you know sort of you know very honest in his assessment
02:46saying that Leeds are very much the better team etc. I think most people sort of you know even
02:50from the Sheffield United perspective saw that and yeah very, very good I mean nothing to complain
02:54about really there the only thing obviously I suppose that's unfortunate is kind of like the
02:58weekend's results obviously with both Sunderland and Burnley both winning we don't want another
03:03repeat of last season where we end up with like a breakaway three like we had with Leicester and
03:07Ipswich and you sort of half wonder if you end up getting the same sort of situation this season but
03:12and you wouldn't write it off that said even though Sheffield United got beat there I still
03:16very much expect them to be firmly in the mix they've got a very good team you look at their
03:20team and even their bench and they've got some good players you know I mean obviously Leeds
03:24have got you know you think probably the best squad and team in the championship but Sheffield
03:27United do look a very good side I'm sure they'll be there thereabouts but yeah a very, very good
03:32win very important win obviously on the back of that Sunderland draw before the international
03:36break which of course should have been three points as we know but it wasn't and that would
03:39have been another one really the way Leeds were playing where I mean we saw I sort of said to
03:43Graeme Smith in the press box you know when it was 0-0 or could this be another one of these
03:48games where Leeds dominate and then they end up losing 1-0 you know or something like that or
03:51just getting a draw if you've seen it before but thankfully not this time very, very good performance
03:56you know that was not perfect but not far off you know very, very good indeed and yeah everybody
04:02enjoyed the weekend after that one and you know I mean as I said at the start basically if they
04:05play like that on a consistent basis you know obviously you've got to like make sure they don't
04:10get tons of injuries which they've already got then then they should go up but it's a very easy
04:14thing to say because consistency is what it's all about isn't it and in a marathon league like the
04:18championship that's hard to get so they've got to do that week in week out and if they do they'll
04:22be looking pretty good. I was just about to say that was probably their most sort of maybe complete
04:26performance of the season so far in terms of who they were playing the way they dispatched of them
04:31and obviously just sort of the feeling I think probably with inside Elland Road at the time so
04:36all in all a good evening I mean
04:49certainly Joe Rothwell he had a good game didn't he I mean a lot of people saying he was man of the
04:53match which yeah as we already discussed off camera is quite surprising given he's a central
04:57midfielder but uh you thought he was certainly a standout player in that game? Yeah definitely
05:02yeah it's quite ironic and funny the way it's worked out um you know obviously you've got your
05:05two first choice midfielders out and Ethan Empadu, club captain and Ilya Gruev who would be
05:10the two main starters in those two centre midfielders positions and yet you know possibly
05:16the two centre midfielders the two best players because I think Joe Rothwell was most people's
05:19idea of man of the match and if it wasn't him it was maybe Alton Arcus so and they're the two
05:23centre midfielders so you know they've really stepped up to the plate and I've seen a few people
05:27say this and I can kind of kind of agree with it that actually maybe having those two in centre
05:31midfield maybe makes Leeds a bit more of a you know adds a bit more impetus and which
05:35makes them a bit more attacking really and I can see that I mean Empadu and Gruev are obviously
05:39fantastic players but they are slightly more defensive you know I mean and stuff so they'll
05:43be more they'll be more solid with those two you would think but then again they're pretty solid
05:46against Sheffield United you've got to be said um but those two definitely I'd like it feels like
05:51a little bit more going forward and Rothwell was just great you know on and off the ball
05:55um you know like really like pressing down whenever he could off the ball like really
05:59adding some like sort of like vigor going forward on the ball some very very nice neat
06:02passes obviously got the assist for the goal whether that was quite by design to put the
06:06corner in that low I don't know but it doesn't matter it worked and yeah I mean you know very
06:10very good performance from him um I think nine out of ten we gave him the player ratings I mean
06:14which sort of says it all really I mean very very good indeed that said it doesn't sort of
06:18hide or disguise the fact of how light Leeds are in centre midfield and he and he do feel like if
06:24you have one injury to either of those two then you really you know that could have a really you
06:29know I'm sure about disastrous but it'd be very very difficult to work to sort of navigate that
06:33because obviously then you really are looking around I mean obviously Charlie Crews a very
06:36good young talented midfielder but you'd be really throwing him in the deep end and you know I don't
06:40think he's quite actually grey levels yet you know the sort of thing like obviously in terms of a
06:45youngster coming through you know it's a different ball game with Charlie Crews obviously you know
06:48they're going a bit more patient with him he's a good young player waiting in the wings though
06:51and then he'd probably be looking at other people stepping into midfield I mean Isaac Schmidt could
06:55probably play there Pascal's played all the midfield before but if you were to lose one of
06:59those two when Ampadu and Gruver out then you know that would be a problem and that's why basically
07:04Daniel Farquhar has admitted they are looking at the free agent market so it's kind of watch this
07:08space to see if anything happens with that um I think he's you know basically said that the ideal
07:13would be to get somebody in who can play centre midfield but also play a centre back you know
07:17because then you've got sort of covering both those positions because obviously you've got a
07:20member Ampadu also is an option at centre half so yeah two aspects to it really number one a very
07:25good performance from Rothwell and you should remember with him as well he hasn't actually had
07:29that many starts I mean that was I think I was only a second league start of the season and
07:32last season he only had seven seven league starts I think it was so I know he's you know he's 29 and
07:37stuff I mean he's not that ancient is he so obviously you know he's still got plenty of years ahead of
07:41him but equally like not just that you know when he hasn't had that many starts he's probably going
07:45to continue to get better which is quite exciting really because he looked very very good indeed in
07:50in that display against the blade so yeah very very good indeed but as I say it doesn't really
07:54change the whole dynamic and picture which is they do still look at light and centre midfield so you
07:58know the sooner they can get that sorted out the better and realistically the sooner they can get
08:01their injured three injured players back the better but you know we're lucky we're talking
08:05new year we think for Ampadu um you know grew out of like months not weeks so what that means I don't
08:10know but it doesn't sound anytime soon and it sounds like Werder is going to be the quickest
08:14one back but whether that's quite before the international break I don't know but even that
08:18would be a big boost because he can also play his midfield you would think maybe as a holding
08:21midfielder so yeah it's sort of that is the one area at the moment that you'd worry about I mean
08:26you can talk about the blades performance how well they played etc etc that they'll probably go up if
08:30they play like that which I think they will but certainly to my mind anyway it would you would
08:34sort of your confidence would change if they lost one of those two midfielders now um but the good
08:39thing is anyway is that they both were very very good indeed and they certainly didn't look like
08:42you know third and fourth third and fourth choice centre midfielders very very good indeed well
08:46that's the interesting thing isn't it because of course they're still playing well even though
08:49they're not the first choice or wouldn't be the first choices which is a positive sign but then
08:53of course the worry as you've pointed out is if if they get any injuries or there's any issues
08:57with those you know suspensions perhaps yeah you're in a world of pain sort of thing you're
09:02then really scrambling around for who can play in those roles I mean we've seen clubs you know in
09:08situations like that before and when you're when you're wanting promotion or you're desperate for
09:12promotion having to scrape the barrel at you know as the season really kicks into sort of the
09:17the busy period around winter is not what you need because the games come thick and fast
09:21especially in the championship and you can't be yeah sort of missing players or affording to miss
09:26lots of players all at the same time so it leads I mean how likely do you think it is that they'll
09:31go into the free agent market because I feel like that's not always something that happens a lot
09:37these days anymore you don't really see it sort of in the higher levels of football yeah no I think
09:42they will yeah it sounds like they will I mean Daniel we asked Daniel Farker about it basically
09:47as soon as um Groves as soon as Groves injury was and this is actually before even it was confirmed
09:51how long he was out for and he basically said then you know we'd have to always we have to always be
09:55awake to it and stuff and you know he's very honest about it he basically said yeah it's something
09:59we're going to look at and something we need to look at and I think you're right I think they do
10:02need to do that really the other thing is as well as even even if even if Rothwell and Tanaka both
10:07stay fit which is obviously what you hope and you've got to be honest in football it's it's
10:11unlikely that both of those will stay a fit fully fit and be suspension free from all the way up
10:18from here until the new year and obviously the new year is a different ball game because then
10:21you've got the January transfer window open but I mean there's still a long way to go between now
10:24and then it might not be long in terms of you know talking only now what you know nearly two months
10:29but an awful lot of games especially in the festive period and to expect both of those to be
10:33fully fit and suspension free right up until then is probably a bit of a stretch and also
10:38not just that even if they are fully fit and suspension free to ask them to then play every
10:42single game you know like when obviously you're playing midweek and obviously like I say the
10:45festive game so they do need another option I suppose a lot also does does depend on how far
10:50forward they think Charlie Crewe is because obviously that is his position he is a centre
10:53midfielder and he is very highly rated obviously making very big progress for Wales already so
10:59you know I suppose it depends really on like how ready they think he is and also you know as I say
11:03these other players whether Schmidt can play there so there are probably ways around it but it just
11:07feels like too much of a gamble really because I think you know so I think you need to get somebody
11:11else and various names have been linked obviously but nothing concrete as yet so it's kind of watch
11:15this space but I suspect something will happen yeah I think it probably needs to and and yeah
11:19that could be the difference between going up and not I mean it's you know I mean every position is
11:23important on the football pitch but you know centre midfield's the engine room isn't it and
11:26if you haven't got people in there all of a sudden then then you know then you're asking
11:30for trouble really it's unfortunate that they've added injuries to Ampadu and Grewe at the same
11:33time you know well and Verber as well sort of similar option-ish centre back obviously anyway
11:38who can also play midfield but yeah I think they do need to get cover in and to all extents and
11:43purposes it sounds like they will so it's a watch this space job and as soon as they can get
11:46something done the better.
11:57Oh well then moving on we'll go to Largi Largi I always get that one yeah we'll go with Largi
12:04Largi Ramazzani who of course has been a bit of a standout as well in recent weeks certainly had
12:09a good game against Sheffield United. The question is you know obviously he did replace
12:15Christendom Somerville let's be honest in that in that team given his move to West Ham
12:19yeah is he living up to expectations so far well it would appear so I mean he's certainly
12:25putting in the performances but is he quite at the level of Somerville in terms of what
12:29he achieved with Leeds just yet? Well probably not quite yet or definitely not quite yet in
12:34terms of output anyway and so he's already got a couple of goals to his name and you know and
12:39he's very lucky not to get another one against Sheffield United forced one outstanding save and
12:43also hit the post and I think he's actually probably a little bit maybe even a bit ahead
12:47of where maybe Leeds thought he might be and maybe where Daniel Farke might think he might
12:51have been because he was very keen to say when he came in you know you can't sort of replace
12:55players like for like and stuff and very obviously very keen to avoid the whole this is the new
12:59Christendom Somerville vibe because I mean that puts massive pressure on somebody when you're
13:02sort of player of the season and you've got the goals and assists that he has but you know he's
13:07settled in very very quickly and I mean to my eye he already looks like like Leeds' star really
13:13and when I say star I mean you're sort of like you're sort of star rat in terms of like an
13:17attacking sense you know like someone who like stands out like in the final third and stuff
13:21because you can have best players and star players who are defenders obviously and you know
13:25some people could argue like you know Pascal's like Leeds' most important player or whatever
13:29or they could say Joe Rodan is and stuff and or Ampadu when he's fit and you know I could
13:33totally agree with all of those you know 100% you know definitely big big big players but
13:37when you start talking about players in the final third making things happen
13:41he looks he almost he looks like the one already for me I mean you talk about Somerville I won't
13:45go too overboard but his first touch in that game against Sheffield United was absolutely
13:49outstanding and a couple of times he actually reminded me of Rafinha the way he brought it
13:52down and stuff it was sort of like just bringing it down it almost like glued to his boot and like
13:56Rafinha used to do that a lot you know and look I mean he's not the next Rafinha well let's hope
14:00he is you never know he might be he's four years younger so he's got time on his side hasn't he
14:04but I mean that's you know asking a lot for someone to be as good as him he's like probably
14:07you know well certainly one of Leeds' best ever modern day players there's no doubt about that
14:10and it was a joy to watch Rafinha but equally at the moment it's it's pleasing to watch Nadja
14:15Ramazani who does look a very good player I mean he's quick he's got skill as I say an amazing
14:19touch he's already starting to get output to his game in terms of like goals and assists and stuff
14:24and again like we said with Rothwell in terms of like he'll get better because he's not had that
14:28many starts so will Ramazani you know he's still new to the club he's still settling in probably
14:32still work still improving in terms of like fitness wise and sort of like getting used to
14:36the physicality of the league and stuff so they've got a very very good player there and you know I
14:40mean obviously Nonto is the obvious one I suppose as well like we all know what he can do when he's
14:44on song but so if you've got like Ramazani on one flank and Nonto on the other and then obviously
14:48you've got Dan James waiting in the wings as well you know and the other attacking players
14:51Leeds have got you know that's a it's a very serious front line in the championship really
14:56and you know with players like that it's you know they should be getting the hell out of the league
15:00to be quite honest with you you know like I mean players like that Ramazani so to my end only 10
15:04million pounds I mean you know that's decent money in the championship but even at this stage
15:10especially at his age like that looks like a pretty decent purchase really and I suspect you
15:14know he could end up being worth an awful lot more than that so let's hope he fires Leeds to
15:18promotion and automatic promotion certainly looks like you know he's got it within him to do that
15:23and yeah Rothwell and Tanaka sort of like I suppose got the plaudits in terms of man of the
15:28match I suppose against Blades but he was very very good as well Ramazani and as I say his first
15:32touch was exceptional so the more of that the better. Indeed yes well that's the thing I think
15:37obviously Leeds were crying out when when we were doing these back in sort of the summer and we knew
15:42that probably one or Somerville or Nantes was going to depart the club and you think well are
15:45they going to replace them in time and they and they did credit to them they did but then you
15:50think okay is he good enough and and so far fair enough he's doing the business so fair play to him
15:55Obviously we're still early in the season you're not at the stage yet where you're sort of thinking
16:08oh don't you know watch the gaps and stuff and this I mean but I mean you know any stage is
16:11early enough really to look at the table and stuff and they've both got difficult games Burnley are
16:16away at Hull on Wednesday night obviously Hull couldn't do a Leeds favour against Sunderland
16:21but then Sunderland are at Luton as well and obviously Luton as we've just seen have just
16:24won 3-0 so they seem to be improving so you would think there'd be a reasonable chance of one of
16:28those two slipping up even if it's a draw so I think if Leeds can get a win against Watford
16:33then they'll probably you know think end up end the weekend or certainly approach the weekend
16:36and the automatic promotion places that said you know wouldn't you rule out Burnley and Sunderland
16:40both winning to be honest so but all Leeds can do is look after their own end of the bargain
16:45the strong favourites against Watford I think the one to three favourites I think that's about
16:48that's for once that's one of those ones where I can look at it and think yeah they probably should
16:51be about one to three to be honest with the home record the form they're in the players have got
16:55um Watford's away form you know I mean everything stacks up towards a Leeds win so you know by the
17:00time this comes out and people watch it it's probably going to have been one nil Watford
17:03or something isn't it you know what it's like but realistically like I mean it's if you wanted
17:06if you want it's no disrespect to Watford good team good players very good young manager but
17:10you know with their away record and the way sort of like you know things are going if you wanted
17:14a fixture to back it up that's Sheffield United win then you'd look at that one and think that'd
17:17be a good one so you know no excuses go and get it done it feels like now we'll come to the
17:21Bristol City game as well but it feels like now's the time where Leeds need to kick on you know
17:24these fixtures before the November international break build up a run get going and sort of start
17:29you know getting in the top two and attempting to pull clear yeah no I think you're right there but
17:34we'll move swiftly on to Bristol City because that of course will still be to come by the time this
17:38comes out so if you look at Bristol City obviously they had a good win against Middlesbrough at the
17:43weekend yeah um yeah again it's sort of one of those teams where you think one week they might
17:49be really good and the next they sort of they're not and you don't really know what sort of Bristol
17:53City you're going to expect there's a lot of teams like that in this championship as well and it's
17:57sort of the teams like Leeds for example who can be a bit more consistent than the other ones who
18:02they'll go up whereas the other ones will will stutter at times as well so it is away from home
18:08of course so it will be tricky but if they come away from Watford with a win you'd think they'd
18:13be full of confidence and I know obviously we're talking up here given the fact that they've just
18:17played really well against Sheffield United Leeds but if they are going to be you know challenging
18:22these are the sort of games where you've got to be at least picking up a point in really isn't it?
18:26Yeah well I think they've got to go there and win but the first thing to say with Bristol City is
18:29like all thoughts go out to Liam Manning and his family obviously you know the tragic death of his
18:33son Theo I mean absolutely awful tragic news and stuff and you know as I say like that puts
18:37everything into perspective so very much thoughts with him and stuff and yeah I mean that's awful
18:42news but in terms of the game um in Leeds I think they've got to go there and win you know I think
18:46that's the thing a couple of things with this is Bristol City I think you're totally right you
18:50summary about them really good solid championship team and this they're almost they're almost the
18:55opposite of Watford really in the sense that they haven't been as good away from home but at home
18:58they've been all right and they're actually unbeaten at home you know they're playing midweek so that
19:01unbeaten record will still be there because they're away at Stoke in midweek and so obviously
19:05you know it depends on sort of like what they get there and obviously injuries and whatnot and this
19:09sat on the other but they haven't lost at home so that's the first thing you can say is that'll be
19:13quite tough the other thing that stands out to me in this fixture is the timing of it 12 30 on a
19:17Saturday lunchtime down to Bristol City never a good thing and to be honest Leeds' record in
19:23lunchtime fixtures is not great um so that worries me a little bit going down there obviously they'll
19:28go down before and whatnot and stop over but I mean you know Daniel Farke has been honest about
19:31it before you know saying you know 12 30 kickoffs like no one likes them no one does but he's I
19:38think he's especially not keen on them you know he sort of said about like having to sort of like
19:42you know have your food at different times and it will do it'll affect everything and stuff but then
19:45again I suppose it's the same for you know both teams really isn't it but it does feel like Leeds
19:48are on 12 30. It's just because Leeds have got to travel as well which which makes yeah and exactly
19:53yeah 100% and it's not like you're going down the road is it Bristol City it's a trek you know so
19:57that comes into it as well um but I mean realistically what it should come down to is
20:02the players on the pitch and realistically like with Leeds' squad assuming like you know they
20:05don't get some more injuries before then they should have they should have too much for Bristol
20:09City and that's no disrespect to the hosts who you know as I say look a solid side what he would
20:13say about them is they're unbeaten at home but all of those games so far none of them have come
20:17against teams in the top 10 so I mean you know Leeds should prove a different proposition and
20:22also it's interesting that you get teams obviously that we talk about when Leeds play sides have got
20:26awful records against well Bristol City's one who they've got a very good record against I mean
20:31just before we were coming on I was thinking to myself I'm sure they've got a reasonably good
20:34record I didn't realize it was that good they'd actually won the last six against Bristol City so
20:38which is pretty good sequence really in the championship considering how unpredictable it
20:41is so let's hope it's seven in a row um it's a game where you know you would fancy him to go
20:45if it was if it was a not if it was a normal game i.e like a 3 p.m or without midweekers and stuff
20:50like that I'd strongly yeah I strongly strongly fancy Leeds to be there and too good for him but
20:55it's just the whole sort of 12 30 going down there after a midweeker you know I mean another
21:00playing Tuesday not Wednesday so that helps and stuff plus the fact that Bristol City are unbeaten
21:04at home so it could be quite tight and you know I know what you mean like getting up if you're
21:09allowing for all that if they went down there and got a point like it wouldn't feel like a disaster
21:13would it but I mean I just look at these fixtures now before the international break and I just
21:18think this is the time where Leeds need to really like you know amass a serious amount of points
21:21like almost perfect you know I mean probably not going to win every single game but why not you
21:26know certainly get close to it because we don't know like we've talked obviously about you know
21:29last season and now we've got now we've got the whole sort of situation with Sunderland and Burnley
21:34and Chef United and you know I don't expect it'll be quite the same standard as last season you know
21:39in terms of like the ridiculous standards that like Leicester and Ipswich and even Southampton
21:43set but you never know I mean because you know already those teams are picking up points and
21:47not really showing too much signs of slipping so you've got to set a high standard you've got to
21:51pick up points and stuff and that's why I say realistically I think you'd be disappointed if
21:54they didn't go there and get three points there'll be odds on again but they're going to be odds on
21:57in just about every game now that's the way it is and they've got to go down there and get the
22:01business done put simple if they want to go up automatic they've got to go to places like that
22:06and win. No I think you're right Lee yes I think that's just putting it bluntly I mean as I say
22:11a point wouldn't be the end of the world but for promotion candidates it's you've got to be sort of
22:17going or aiming to pick up all three. Yeah and the other thing with it is as well is like
22:22also getting in the top two great you know the first thing they've got to get in there as we
22:25speak they're not even in there they're obviously third but the need to get in the automatic
22:29promotions spots and stay there and establish a gap you know and don't be sort of like semi
22:35obviously like it doesn't really matter if they finish second on goal difference that's great
22:38that's all anyone would care about get all my promotion but nobody wants nerves like that I
22:42mean you don't want to be like second and just like just ahead of it on goal difference coming
22:45towards a lot of stages you know try and make it as easy as possible for yourself and you know get
22:49in there and kick on and stuff because it sounds a bit idealistic you know saying that but it's
22:54pretty obvious they've got the team and the squad to do that I mean like let's not be daft about it
22:58like they absolutely blew Sheffield United away and Sheffield United you know hadn't conceded in
23:01six goals so they've got the team there to be able to do it so it's just consistency now doing it on
23:06a consistent basis and as I say it feels like now's the time with these fixtures coming up
23:09before the national break like sort of yeah let's get this run going now and get in those places and
23:14stay there this time and don't take us back to the playoffs again please. Oh god we're still a long
23:19way from that I think for now for now at least anyway that'll draw us to the conclusion for now
23:25of course as we mentioned the Watford game will have happened by the time that this comes out so
23:31for all we know Leeds could have gone and hammered them Watford could have gone and won 1-0
23:35and we could all be crying or we could all be really quite happy but it doesn't really
23:38matter for now until then we will see you all next time next week after Bristol City
23:43but thank you very much for watching and for listening and we'll see you next time.
