Leeds United: A big win against the Blades
Transcript
00:00Hello and welcome back to the Marching On Together Leeds United podcast. We are back
00:04after a small hiatus, you know, international break does its thing. There's never a lot to
00:12talk about to be honest during the international break. Folks, we are back and back with a bang
00:16because of course Leeds won on Friday night and we'll go straight to you, Lee, as always.
00:22It was just a good performance, wasn't it, Sheffield United? Of course a promotion contender
00:26this season, no doubt about that. But Leeds were ruthless and efficient, I thought, in their 2-0
00:31win. Yeah, it was an excellent performance and it was very much the sort of performance which
00:35left you thinking, you know, if they play like that every week or every game, then realistically
00:39they should go up. I mean, that's a very simple thing to say, but I mean, that's the way it sort
00:43of looked and the way it felt. And you've got to remember the strength of the opposition that
00:47were playing against Sheffield United and you almost had to look twice at the stats to think,
00:50to remember that they hadn't conceded in six games, you know. I mean, that's some run is that
00:54and obviously, yeah, all right, well, so to even score one against them is obviously an achievement
00:59based on that and obviously Leeds only scored two, but they could have scored more. And it was just a
01:03very, very good performance. There was a couple of spells at the start. Sheffield United started
01:07reasonably well, big physical team and you wondered sort of how that would play out, you know, obviously
01:10Kiefer Moore up front and obviously Joe Roden and Pascal dealt with him really well and all the other
01:15threats and there was a brief spell in the second half where they came back into it a little bit.
01:18But by and large, Leeds just dominated and that very much is reflected in the stats, you know,
01:2213 shots compared to five, four on target compared to none. That's another big start.
01:26Obviously, Sheffield United were unable to get one single shot on target. That's not to say
01:30they didn't have chances because they had a couple, but nowhere near as many as Leeds and
01:3455% possession compared to 45. And all these stats, as we know, don't matter. The only stat
01:38that matters is the one in the top corner. But for once, that stat, well, not for once because
01:42Leeds have won a lot of games, but an awful lot of times we've seen, you know, the stats sort of
01:46like not sort of matched up in the scoreline. But this time it did and it's, I think, 2-0,
01:50could have been more, obviously, and a very, very good performance. 0-0 at half-time and they should
01:55have been in front at half-time, really. A couple of chances there. Ramazani denied by a very,
01:59very good save in particular. Of course, you had the old Ellen Road eruption as Leeds finally
02:03scored from a corner. Even chants about that from the stands, which was nice to see. I mean,
02:07Daniel Farker did say the other week that it was coming. It didn't feel like that, really. But,
02:11you know, so finally we got one there. Great finish from Pascal, even though he said it came
02:15off his shin. So what? It went in the net. And then obviously, you know, Mateo Joseph and Joel
02:19Peru combining with Joseph's score on the second goal. So really, really good win against a very
02:25good side. Leeds, you know, and Chris Wilder, you know, sort of very honest in his assessment
02:29saying that Leeds are very much the better team, etc. I think most people sort of, you know, even
02:32from the Sheffield United perspective saw that. And yeah, very, very good. I mean, nothing to
02:37complain about, really. The only thing, obviously, I suppose that's unfortunate is kind of like the
02:40weekend's results, obviously, with both Sunderland and Burnley both winning. We don't want another
02:46repeat of last season where we end up with like a breakaway three like we had with Leicester and
02:50Ipswich. And you sort of half wonder if you end up getting the same sort of situation this season,
02:54but you wouldn't write it off. That said, even though Sheffield United got beat there, I still
02:59very much expect them to be firmly in the mix. They've got a very good team. You look at their
03:03team and even their bench and they've got some good players, you know. Obviously, Leeds have got,
03:07you know, you think probably the best squad and team in the Championship. But Sheffield United do
03:11look a very good side. I'm sure they'll be there or thereabouts. But yeah, a very, very good win,
03:15very important win, obviously, on the back of that Sunderland draw before the international
03:18break, which, of course, should have been three points, as we know, but it wasn't.
03:22And that would have been another one, really, the way Leeds were playing. I mean, I sort of said
03:25to Graeme Smith in the press box, you know, when it was nil-nil, could this be another one of these
03:30games where Leeds dominate and then they end up losing one-nil, you know, or something like that,
03:34or just getting a draw if you've seen it before. But thankfully, not this time. Very, very good
03:38performance. You know, that was not perfect, but not far off, you know, very, very good indeed.
03:43Yeah, everybody enjoyed the weekend after that one. I mean, as I said at the start, basically,
03:48if they play like that on a consistent basis, you know, obviously, you've got to make sure
03:52they don't get tons of injuries, which they've already got, then they should go up. But it's a
03:56very easy thing to say because consistency is what it's all about, isn't it? And in a marathon
04:01league like the Championship, that's hard to get. So they've got to do that week in, week out,
04:04and if they do, they'll be looking pretty good. I was just about to say, that was probably their
04:08complete performance of the season so far in terms of who they were playing,
04:13the way they dispatched of them, and obviously, just sort of the feeling,
04:16I think, probably with inside Elland Road at the time. So all in all, a good evening.
