One small item found in Liam Payne's hotel room is getting a lot of attention from cops investigating his death, because it might unlock the mystery of who helped him score drugs ... TMZ has learned.

00:00Well, police held a raid in Buenos Aires as they investigate Liam Payne's death.
00:05They raided the hotel where he was staying, the hotel where he had the fatal fall off his hotel room balcony.
00:13And the reason that they conducted this raid early this morning is they believe that there's,
00:20they're investigating at least the theory that there was a hotel employee that delivered the drugs
00:26or helped score the drugs for Liam, the drugs that police now say were in his system.
00:30Now stay in that picture because this is really interesting.
00:34We've seen this photo a lot since his death.
00:36And I'll be honest about it, I kind of just didn't, I didn't connect this.
00:40I looked at the white powder, I looked at the foil, I looked at the lighter,
00:45trying to figure out what he was, what kind of drugs were being used.
00:49Why is there a dove soap box on that table?
00:53Yeah, well, police are asking that same question and they have a theory
00:58and it may have something to do again with who delivered the drugs to Liam Payne.
01:04Yeah, there's a working theory that they're looking into as they're talking to all the employees
01:08and staff members at the hotel that the dove soap box may have been a box that drugs were delivered in,
01:14maybe to surreptitiously get these drugs to Liam without bringing another type of baggie.
01:19You just put them in a dove soap box and delivering them in that way.
01:22That seems to be what they're keen on in this investigation.
01:25It seems to me that what they're going to do, I'm assuming this hotel, it's a pretty fancy hotel,
01:30that I'm assuming they have surveillance cameras in the hallways.
01:34And I mean, I would assume what they're going to do is they're going to look at when he goes in the room
01:41and who goes to knock at the door and hand him something.
01:44And that's, by the way, what we're told police did look at all the video cameras.
01:49They wanted to see what videos that the hotel has stored on the cloud or on their own storage system.
01:56But they're looking through all of that.
01:58And I imagine they're going to talk to a lot of employees as well.
02:03This is, you know, I guess this is part of the thing that we told you that Liam's father was cooperating with police
02:11and that he had spent some time at the hotel.
02:15I would imagine if you're Jeff Payne, you want to know who the people are who got these drugs.
02:20Because you're, I would think the theory you have is that whatever he took pushed him toward ending up on that hotel balcony.
02:30Well, it certainly seems that way.
02:31Look, the police said he jumped.
02:33But that doesn't mean this is an intentional decision to jump off the balcony.
02:37You know, based on the drugs he had in his system, according to the toxic, the preliminary toxicology.
02:44And this may have just been, you know, almost out of his mind.
