00:00Yeah. Question number one, there's angst in Ann Arbor, but you know that already, Doug.
00:05But what about Florida State? They were 12-0 last year on the verge of a college football
00:08playoff. Since then, they've lost seven of eight games. What's going on there?
00:12So it's really hard to believe how bad it is that they are 1-6 and they look authentically
00:181-6. The head coach, Mike Norvell, said this week that they didn't handle getting left
00:22out of the college football playoff very well. And the way I interpret that, when I look
00:26at all the noise out of Florida State in the offseason, this was a university that was
00:30suing to try and get out of their conference. They were blaming the conference for the reason
00:35they didn't get into the college football playoff. And that tells me there was too much
00:39energy, when a coach says that, too much energy spent on worrying about all of that and not
00:45enough energy on the, OK, we're going back to work and leave no doubt approach moving
00:50forward. When a coach says that, and look, I mean, I'm glad he's willing to look in the
00:56mirror and say, here's what went wrong, but I'm going to go that that's what happened
01:00there. They've spent too much time worrying about the system on an administrative level
01:04all the way on down and not enough about getting back to business.
01:08I can't help but think that there has to be something behind the scenes with what happened
01:12after they lost a quarterback last year and the way they handled that situation, that
01:16it rubbed some players the wrong way. Maybe they thought other guys should have gotten
01:20chances or whatever, because there's just too much attrition. You've got the guys who
01:23went to the NFL and they were in key positions and phenomenal players. You had the first
01:27round players, you know, Jared Verse and Fisk. And then you've got the receivers, Keon Coleman
01:34and the other receiver, the quarterback himself, lots of attrition. And they're not a big time
01:38blue blood program anymore. They're not. They're not Alabama. They're not Ohio State. They're
01:44not LSU. They're not reloading. So when you lose those guys and then, like I said, I think
01:49there's something behind the scenes that happened. So there's a mass exodus from the
01:52program. Coach is unable to hang on to those guys. Then you're not replenishing with the
01:56portal with the top end portal guys and you're having to rely on freshmen and sophomores.
02:02It is the perfect storm for having a bad season. But I don't think anybody thought it was gonna
02:06be this bad.
02:07No, this is pretty horrific. I do believe there is some hangover effect from last year.
02:12The spending time and energy onto it, Doug, you're onto something there. The players,
02:15the coaches that are still here from last year feeling the effects, they could have
02:19used this as an advantage, like a chip on the shoulder thing, but it's gone to completely
02:22the other way. But really the biggest reason is, and it's the same as Michigan actually
02:26in a lot of programs, no quarterback, no college football playoff, man, DJ, you better get
02:31a real job is, you know, it's not the answer ain't working clearly.
02:35And then they went to the other quarterback and he gets her. Now they're on the other
02:38quarterback. If you don't have a quarterback in college football or professional football,
02:42which college football is basically now, it's going to be a rough sailing for you.
02:46All right, Gator, your thoughts on what happened last Saturday night in Austin, Texas, Georgia
02:52beating Texas.
02:54Not a pretty game by any means. And, you know, Georgia wins with 30 to 15, couple of touchdowns
02:58there. It's weird because you look at statistically and Carson Beck throws three interceptions
03:03in the game. Georgia's offense has less than 300 yards. And like, how are they scoring
03:09by two touchdowns? Well, Texas averaged one yard to carry one yard to carry. They also
03:18had less than 300 yards and they lost three fumbles. That is horrific. So it's just, it's
03:24a nightmare of a game for Texas. It's a great game for Georgia. There's controversy in that
03:30game as well. I, I don't know if I can explain it. These two teams played again. Would it
03:34be the same result? Probably not. I think both teams would. Well, I think Texas would
03:38love to get their hands on Georgia again, just like Georgia love to get Alabama again.
03:43A lot of what you said, I kind of had noted on this one. I'll give you something else
03:47too. I saw Steve Sarkisian head coach of Texas on college game day. And he was sitting there
03:53telling them, here's what we do. That's so effective. Here's how we run this. Here's
03:56how we run that. They had videos up and all that. And I'm like, what are you doing? What
04:02are you doing? I thought it was one of the most, I mean, it was interesting, but I was
04:07sitting there watching it going, is he giving away the game plan? Like it felt really like
04:13too much. There was a certain, I don't know. I w I was surprised that he did it and maybe
04:19it had nothing to do with anything, but I was really shocked at how forward he was about
04:24what they were going to do. Do you want Scotty Sheffler? I don't know what that means. I
04:28think Scotty Sheffler was the guest picker. Wasn't he? Oh, was he? Okay. I didn't see
04:31it. I'm sorry. Yeah, it's all right. So the weird thing is the biggest thing that stood
04:34out to me from that game was the whole fans throwing the bottles onto the field when the
04:39whole pass interference, what was the call? I can't remember anymore. Yeah, it was. And
04:44then the turn, the call got overturned after the delay from the cleaning up the bottles
04:48and everything. And I thought it worked. It actually worked and you're rewarding bad behavior
04:54from fans. Now, later on in the week, they announced a big hefty fine for Texas, but
05:01I don't know, maybe should there be a penalty, you know, for that home team to get, so their
05:06fans don't do things like that. And it's not like, Oh, one bottle comes on and fill out
05:09a penalty right away, but something, you know, really over the top, like what the fans did
05:13at that game. I thought that was kind of ridiculous, even though they got technically the call,
05:16right. You know what that sounds like a question for next week's couch.
05:23And also Kirby smart. Another thing that stood out after the game, that postgame interview,
05:27someone was salty. Someone was pissed that people picked against your team, dude. You,
05:31how long you've been doing this big time football. People are going to pick against you at some
05:35point. Nobody thought Georgia was going to win. Oh God. Eight games. Kirby smart with
05:41a telling his team, people are picking us to lose five, six games, man. He oversells.
05:45All right. All right. CBS sports confirmed last week that the big tent and the sec were
05:51in preliminary talks to play non-conference games against each other. This is a way to
05:56enhance the schedule. Your thoughts on this? I don't know that you need to, this is a way
06:00to make more money. This is a way to get higher TV ratings. This is a way to keep your network
06:04partners happy and, and keeping the network partners happy has led to Michigan state playing
06:09virtually their entire schedule at night. Like it's amazing how much that the B1G and
06:14the sec is just basically acquiesce the power to the TV networks. But I'll say this with
06:20the strength of schedule thing, we're going to see a two loss national champion before
06:23we see another undefeated national champion. Oh my, I like that bold take. And you're probably
06:28not off on that. I love it. Yeah, there you go. Listen, I love that they're going to schedule
06:34games against each other because for the fans, it's so much better. But the real reason they're
06:38doing it is exactly what you said. It's for money and it's also for power, right? They
06:43get the separate TV deal. They get the money. And, and also, you know, what's going to happen.
06:48You know that this is just a precursor so that they can lobby the college football playoff
06:52to ensure that each, each conference gets four teams in the college football playoff
06:56and everybody else is playing for four other spots. That's, what's going to happen because
07:00that's how these, these big conferences are thinking the disparity between the have and
07:04have nots is such a Canyon is gap. And it's only going to get larger with these two, these
07:09two conferences. I hate it. Yeah. They're doing this for three reasons, guys. One money
07:13power. Oh, three money. Okay. So, I mean, this is, you know, they don't care about,
07:19you know, the college football fan anymore, as far as what they want and what college
07:23football meant to a lot of people and the differences between amateur football and professional
07:27football. If you're going to do something like this, I say, all right, fine. At least
07:31get rid of those early season cupcakes, the SEC schedules, and especially those late season
07:35cupcakes, the SEC schedules, you know, to get them ready for the real big games. All
07:41right. Can undefeated 24th ranked Navy beat 12th ranked six and one Notre Dame this Saturday?
07:48Yes, they can. Okay. First of all, when you're Notre Dame, you got a target on your back
07:54every single week. Cause every team hates you. Every team wants to beat you. And they,
07:57you know, every team has the rival. And then if Notre Dame's on your schedule, that's the
08:01second rival. Even if you've never have no history with it, Navy has history with Notre
08:04Dame Horvath. The quarterback is awfully good now because he's a service Academy quarterback.
08:10He's got to run the ball a ton and he does. And he averages like eight, seven or eight
08:14yards of carry. He's got 10 touchdowns already on the ground. But interestingly enough, he's
08:19also thrown for over 800 yards. In fact, it's only 300 yards less than what Riley Leonard
08:25is thrown for at Notre Dame. He's thrown for 10 touchdowns at Navy. Riley Leonard has thrown
08:31for six. He's thrown one pick Riley. Riley Leonard has three picks. Navy has a real shot
08:38in this game. I know there, I think 13 and a half point dogs. I would take them with
08:41the points. The service academies are legit this year. This is going to be a fun year
08:45to watch when army and Navy play at the end of the season. It's not just, Oh, I'm going
08:49to watch it because of national pride. You're going to watch because it's going to be a
08:52damn good football game. Both of those teams have legit shots of, of upending Notre Dame
08:58and Navy gets the first shot at it.
09:00They could end up in the playoff. This is your typical Navy team. As you pointed out
09:04the midship and are averaging 11.93 yards per attempt through the air. Yes. That's number
09:10two in the country. They're yards per completion. 19.32. That's number two in the country. Is
09:18it behind army? Notre Dame has been, yeah, it actually is. Notre Dame has been very good
09:21against the passing quarterback rating against not as good against the run to be fair. Neither
09:25of them played a tough schedule, Notre Dame nor army or Navy rather, but certainly they
09:29could win that game. Oh, they can absolutely win that game. I mean, they can attack you
09:34through the land, air and sea guys. All right. Notre Dame. Obviously I got Notre Dame winning
09:39this game, but they're not unbeatable. And especially a team that lost in Northern Illinois.
09:42You know, the more that college football goes towards this NFL, I I'm going to bring it
09:46up all the time. Cause they're going through this NFL model is any given Saturdays, a real
09:50more real thing than it was, you know, 10, 20 years ago. So yeah, Notre Dame, I got them
09:55winning, but Navy can absolutely beat them and I'm rooting for them.
09:58All right. Two big injuries in the big 10, Ohio state loses a left tackle Josh Simmons
10:07and for the season, IU loses their quarterback though for several weeks, several weeks to
10:12a thumb injury, which will prove more costly for these teams. On the surface, I was going
10:17to say Simmons because there's a legit concern about their depth that tackle. They're probably
10:21going to move some people around, but Indiana plays Washington, Michigan state, Michigan
10:25and Ohio state. And even though some of those teams are down, those still aren't easy games.
10:29So I'm going to say Rourke because I think it probably will cost them a game. The Simmons
10:33thing probably won't become an issue until the post season for them given their schedule.
10:38So I'm going to go. The Rourke injury hurts Indiana more.
10:42I will say that it's a, it's the Rourke injury because he's a quarterback and look, Cignetti's
10:47got this thing rolling really good in his first season at IU, but it's his first season
10:53at IU. You know, their backup quarterback is a Tavon Jackson transfer from Tennessee.
10:58He's gone in limited duty and he's played really well there, but against Washington,
11:02this is a, this is a good program. So they're going to be tested this week. I just think
11:06it's a, it's, it's a steep Hill for them to climb. It's a steeper Hill than Ohio state,
11:11which is one of those blue blood programs that does reload. So do they have a left tackle
11:16that can step in and a talented player? Absolutely. Will it be, will he be as good? No, but they
11:23can absorb it better than say, Indiana trying to absorb the injury to their quarterback,
11:28which has been their leader this year.
11:29Yeah, clearly for me, it's Indiana losing Rourke at quarterback. See my above answer
11:33to question number one about not having a quarterback in college football. I mean, it's
11:37a big, big deal, especially for a school like Indiana. So that'll hurt them more than Ohio
11:41state's injury.
11:42All right. Doug and John went to Purdue, Oregon last Thursday. People know Doug loves
11:52Purdue, but he claims he doesn't. All right. But what non-local college football program
11:56do you low-key root for?
11:57All right. So I've made no mistake. I'm a huge BYU fan. I mean, no bones about it. So
12:03I'm not going to say BYU because everybody kind of knows that I've been a BYU fan since
12:07the days of Jim McMahon and Mark Wilson, even before him in the late seventies, but you
12:12may not know. I'm a low-key LSU fan. Oh, I didn't know that. I have loved LSU since I
12:18remember watching football. It's the field. It's the different color of the stripe, the
12:23striping of the field, the numeration every five yards, not every 10 yards. It's the damn
12:29tiger that I have outside there. He's awesome. The tiger, I, the center field, the midfield.
12:35It's the fact that they had in a movie, everybody's all American with Dennis Quaid, the galloping
12:39ghost, Gavin Gray. And that was about it. I mean, I love this team.
12:44It's not low-key anymore.
12:45It's out.
12:46I'm going to let the tiger out of the cage. I got to tell me, Hudson, baby. I got to,
12:52I got Colorado and I liked them before they were cool. Yeah. We know Purdue. Oh yeah.
12:56I liked them before they were cool. Before Dion got there. Did you like him when they
13:00were breaking your heart at Michigan? I didn't love that moment, but I do. I've always kind
13:04of liked the Colorado program. And part of it has to do with the gold helmets and the
13:07black pants when they're on the road. I think it looks sweet. It's a good look. I do have
13:10an FCS team to the Montana Grizzlies. I'm a, I'm a Grizzly fan. Go figure. I chose the
13:15Grizzlies over the Bobcats when I was deciding which Montana team I was going to root for.
13:20So when I really fell in love with sports was a mid to late nineties. And back then
13:23Florida state was the team. All right. I mean, I don't say it out loud. I don't even have,
13:28I don't think I have any Florida state gear, but honestly, one of the reasons why I loved
13:31Florida state was I love the Tomahawk chop. I actually liked the braids. They were good
13:35in the mid nineties, late nineties, because the, and they use the Tomahawk chop as well.
13:39I actually don't like the chiefs, but I do like the Tomahawk chop. I think it's cool.
13:43That gets me going, man. And the whole chant and everything. So Florida state would be
13:47my low key team that I root for. I used to like Florida state. There you go. And that
13:50concludes the college football, a blitz thingy.
