Underground at record high noise levels: Latest London transport round-up

00:00Londoners will know that noise on the Tube feels like it's at an all-time high, and

00:06Finn Brennan, Aslef's union organiser on London Underground, says that noise levels

00:12are the worst they have ever been. He said, London Underground have admitted that on the

00:17Victoria Line it exceeds the legal limit that people should deal with on a working shift.

00:23He added that TfL have had to issue ear defenders to drivers, but that is simply a sticking

00:29plaster and that the underlying problem needs to be dealt with and at the base of the issue

00:34is a lack of maintenance.

00:37Two firms will further examine the possibility of an extension to the Bakerloo line. Transport

00:43for London is appealing to the government for funding if the project is approved. TfL

00:48believes construction could start in the early 2030s, with services running by 2040. It is

00:55estimated the extension would cost between £5.2 and £8.7 billion, based on figures

01:02from 2021. The line would be extended south from Elephant and Castle to Lewisham via New

01:08Crossgate, with new proposed stations at Old Kent Road and Burgess Park.

01:14And finally, UK ministers have taken a big step towards redesigning the flight paths

01:20aircraft use to take off from and land at London airports, in a change that could lead

01:26to greener flights but also noise pollution in different parts of the capital. The Department

01:32for Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority on Tuesday announced a consultation on the

01:37formation of a new airspace design service to redraw the way planes fly in and out over

01:44the UK. The review by the government and the regulator will start with the heavily
