00:00Hey guys, Google had an event today where they completely surprised us by announcing the totally out of the blue Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro
00:09and the Pixel Watch 2 that somehow never leaked. It just completely caught us off guard.
00:15I hope you can detect my sarcasm through the internet but hey, we did get an event and it has some stuff that I was really looking forward to, Pixel 8 and 8 Pro
00:24Mostly because I've been a Pixel fan even though I know it has these big flaws like the Tensor G2 had subpar performance and the somewhat average battery life
00:34but like I still like the Pixel and there's a lot that I was looking forward to for the next stuff.
00:39So they delivered on a lot of that stuff but it also comes with a new price.
00:43So okay, on the outside Pixel 8 and 8 Pro do still look like Pixels, right?
00:48I told you they were sticking with this design language with the visor because it's very recognizable and they finally have that going for them
00:54but this year it just feels like they rounded everything off.
00:57Like that's the big visible design update this year, everything's a bit more rounded.
01:01And then there's the new colors.
01:03Now honestly, I'm just gonna say it.
01:05I think it's been a pretty boring year for phone colors across the board, just putting it out there.
01:10But with this one, it's Hazel, Rose and Obsidian for the Pixel 8 and then Obsidian, Porcelain and this new blue color called Bay.
01:18I think the blue is probably the most interesting of the whole lineup combined with the new matte finish that's on the back of all the Pros.
01:24I love that.
01:25I think it might be my favorite alongside matte black, maybe it's a toss up between the two.
01:29But then around the front, both displays have actually gotten better.
01:32So the bezels are a bit thinner and they look pretty uniform all the way around to me.
01:36And then they're both dramatically brighter up to 2000 nits peak brightness on the Pixel 8 and 2400 nits on the 8 Pro.
01:45I think that's the highest I've ever seen in a phone.
01:48So I think it should look really good both indoors and outdoors.
01:51And then also the smaller Pixel 8 is now 120 hertz as well.
01:54Love that.
01:55I know people love just dismissing 120 hertz on cheaper phones, but we're there.
02:00Now it's not LTPO yet, that's still just the Pro.
02:03But yeah, just looking at these screens for the limited time that I spent with them, I am very excited to get them out in the real world.
02:08They're calling it an Actua display and a Super Actua display.
02:12Not sure why, but I guess you got to name everything.
02:15Anyway, this year, the really big physical change we're getting with these phones, I'm going to say, is the new Tensor G3 chip.
02:21So it's the new third generation of Google Silicon paired with 8 gigs of RAM on the Pixel 8 and 12 gigs of RAM on the Pixel 8 Pro.
02:28And to be honest, Google didn't really talk that much about or at least flex very much of like just raw performance improvements.
02:36Like it's not really about that.
02:38I'm going to have to test these phones to see if they actually improved a lot as far as CPU and GPU and just overall power.
02:44So definitely get subscribed to be first to see those reviews when they come out.
02:47Also, here are the battery sizes, the new batteries of these new phones.
02:52They're both a tiny bit bigger than last year.
02:55But really the story with the Tensor G3 is there is way more TPU and way more processing power for AI related tasks.
03:02And that checks out because the Pixel story has always been all about the software.
03:07And that's still super true with these.
03:09There is so much software.
03:11Like the Pixel is basically the smartest smartphone in the room.
03:14It's not going to wow you with amazing numbers or incredible build quality or huge hardware features or anything like that.
03:22It's going to wow you with very clever software at every corner.
03:25So here we're talking, there's a new Google Assistant feature where if you're on a web page in Chrome,
03:30you can ask the assistant to summarize the web page for you.
03:34And then using the same tech, I imagine that's in Google Bard,
03:38it'll quickly give you a three or four bullet point summary that's hopefully accurate.
03:43Speech to text is also now even faster and more accurate.
03:46It's completely on device and does a much better job also at knowing that ums and uhs are not part of your actual sentence.
03:53So it doesn't write them down.
03:54That's smart.
03:55They're doing more stuff with the front facing camera to make stuff like face unlock and unlocking stuff in apps more secure.
03:59There's also a new fix it feature,
04:01which will proofread your messages built into the keyboard before you send them with things like grammar and all that.
04:06One of the crazy ones is the new call screen voice.
04:10So if you've used a pixel,
04:11you know about call screen before,
04:12which is you're getting a call.
04:13It's an unknown number.
04:14You just let the Google Assistant screen the call.
04:16The new one has a much more human voice that I honestly don't really know if it's a robot voice or just a recording of a human,
04:24but it's much more human sounding.
04:26And then also it has the chips that pop up that you can hit to respond to people that are now context aware.
04:33So if it listens to somebody say,
04:35hey, I'm a UPS driver,
04:36you can now hit a button that immediately says,
04:38oh, you can leave the package at the doorstep.
04:40I got to record this.
04:41I'll just let you listen to it.
04:43Hi, I'm a Google virtual calling assistant.
04:45Recording this call on behalf of the person you're trying to reach.
04:47Can you say what you're calling about?
04:49I'm trying to drop off a package for Kenny.
04:57They said you can go ahead and leave the package by the front door.
05:00Okay, thanks.
05:01That's great.
05:07Great.
05:08I'll see you soon.
05:10So yeah, that's pretty good to me.
05:12It sounds very human,
05:13but again, I don't know.
05:14It could just literally be a human recording.
05:16Either way, it says it's a virtual assistant.
05:18But what would a Pixel be without some camera magic?
05:22So let's just jump into the new camera stuff with the Pixel
05:25because there's a lot of software magic here.
05:28A lot of software magic.
05:29So the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro now share the same upgraded 50 megapixel main camera system.
05:34Then the 8 also has a 12 megapixel ultrawide,
05:37but the 8 Pro just sends it all the way with a 48 megapixel ultrawide
05:41and a 48 megapixel 5X telephoto.
05:44And I also really like the new camera app layout,
05:46which is now separated basically into photo and video mode.
05:50And then all the various settings and modes are inside of each.
05:53So I think it makes a lot of intuitive sense.
05:55You could just switch to photo and then go to a specific photo mode.
05:59There's manual controls.
06:00It's not the first time I've seen it laid out this way,
06:02but when you get so much stuff happening in a camera,
06:04you don't want to move it out or hide it.
06:06You just need to sort of organize it in a capable way.
06:08I think this does a good job.
06:09So I'll have to save my photo and video quality analysis
06:13for the full review.
06:14But like I said,
06:15there's a lot of software features that they've added
06:17that just seem,
06:18they just get more and more wild as you go on.
06:21So the really insane one is the magic editor.
06:24So you've probably already seen,
06:25you can erase people from the background of photos
06:27with magic eraser.
06:28But now this magic editor will let you straight up select subjects
06:32and just move them around and completely alter the entire photo
06:36with just a few taps.
06:37So they showed me this example of like moving a subject
06:40to a different spot in a photo on the beach.
06:42But there's also all kinds of other demos
06:43of like changing the sky or changing shadows
06:46or all kinds of other stuff.
06:48Honestly, it seems like nothing is off limits.
06:50And then there's also a feature I didn't get footage of,
06:52but it's called best take.
06:54Which is like, you know,
06:55when you're taking a photo of like a group
06:57of a bunch of people
06:58and you're like, all right,
06:59everybody try to smile at the same time
07:01and you take a bunch of photos,
07:03but there's always somebody blinking in one of them.
07:05It's never perfect with everyone's faces.
07:07You can probably see where this is going.
07:09So Google detects that you're taking a burst photo
07:12of a bunch of people
07:13and it will take all of those together
07:15and give you the ability to tap on people's faces
07:18and change them to a different instance
07:20of a different face that they were making
07:22at a different time.
07:23Just to stitch together this Frankenstein photo
07:26with everyone having perfect faces,
07:28even though it's a moment that never happened,
07:30what is a photo?
07:32But then there's another one called audio eraser.
07:35It's a video editing feature.
07:37It's just on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro,
07:39but you can actually use it
07:40on any video you've ever taken in your library.
07:42But that literally just erases background sounds
07:45from like a video of a subject.
07:47It supposedly works really well.
07:48I got to test this on more stuff,
07:49but the one they showed me worked amazingly well.
07:51And all of this is basically along the theme
07:53of awesome software magic
07:55enabled by Tensor G3.
07:57Like all of the neural cores
07:59and all the things that it's doing
08:00with AI processing
08:02is what's enabling all of this awesome,
08:04weird, fancy software magic stuff.
08:07And then there's two other little things
08:08that didn't really fit into the rest of this video,
08:10but one is there's a new hole
08:12on the back of the Pro phone,
08:14as you could probably see,
08:15and that is a temperature sensor.
08:17Yeah, actually.
08:20So there's a new thermometer app on the phone,
08:22and when you open it,
08:23it asks you to select a material
08:25to measure the surface temperature of,
08:27I guess to be the most accurate.
08:29So you pick your material
08:30and then you just get up close to your subject,
08:32like within two inches of it,
08:34and tap to measure,
08:35and you get your temperature,
08:37which is, it works.
08:39It's pretty neat, I guess.
08:40I don't know that I would use this very much.
08:42You may also notice that humans are missing
08:45from the object selection menu
08:47because measuring human temperature
08:49is still awaiting FDA approval.
08:51Maybe that'll get added to the menu
08:52when it gets approved later this year.
08:54Although I guess technically
08:55you could just tell it you're a ceramic
08:57or like a hot liquid or something
08:58and then measure yourself anyway.
08:59I don't know.
09:00Whatever.
09:02There's a temperature sensor now
09:03on the 8 Pro.
09:05But the other thing is,
09:06number two, the haptics.
09:08Oh my God.
09:09I was typing on these phones
09:10and this is like the number one thing
09:12I noticed on the 8 Pro
09:13is the haptics are so much stronger.
09:15I mean, I was just poking around the UI
09:17and scrolling a bunch,
09:18but especially when I was typing,
09:20the haptics are super strong
09:22and really refined.
09:23So there's a difference
09:24between strong haptics
09:25and like clean refined haptics.
09:27This was both.
09:28And I think that's super underrated.
09:30I don't know if they're going to mention this
09:31or put it in the marketing materials at all,
09:33but I just love the haptics
09:35from the hour or two
09:36that I spent with this phone.
09:37All right.
09:38Quick interjection.
09:39There's actually one more thing
09:40I wanted to mention with these
09:41that's called Video Boost.
09:43And it's one of the weirdest,
09:45I don't even know if I can call it
09:46a software feature actually,
09:47but it's one of the weirdest things yet.
09:48So first of all,
09:49it's only available
09:50on the Pro Pixel.
09:51Second of all,
09:52it doesn't actually launch
09:53with the phone.
09:54It's coming soon or later.
09:56But basically what it is,
09:57is you take some video
09:59on your Pixel
10:00and it looks okay at first,
10:02but then you have it
10:04uploaded to the cloud
10:06where it then processes
10:07overnight or for a few hours
10:09and then comes back to you
10:11with a result
10:12that looks dramatically better,
10:13better HDR+,
10:14better color grading,
10:16and looks much better
10:17than the video
10:18you originally took.
10:19I don't know why
10:20it's only on the Pro phone.
10:21I don't know why
10:22it has to upload
10:23to other servers.
10:24I don't even know
10:25what's happening.
10:26It's just this weird
10:27video magic feature.
10:28It's called Video Boost.
10:29We'll see what happens
10:30if it actually comes out
10:31by review time,
10:32but I just wanted
10:33to throw that in there.
10:34Another weird feature.
10:35So then the new prices.
10:36So Pixel 8
10:37is going to start
10:38at $699,
10:39which is $100 more
10:40than last year.
10:41And then the Pixel 8 Pro
10:42is going to start at $999.
10:43I think you can justify it though.
10:46I mean the base Pixel
10:47just got upgraded
10:48to a 120Hz display,
10:49to a much brighter display
10:51with thinner bezels,
10:52to the Tensor G3.
10:53It's got a new
10:54primary camera
10:55that's the same
10:56as a more expensive phone.
10:57So I still feel like
10:58that's a fair price for it,
10:59even though it's not
11:00the bargain of the year
11:01like it was before.
11:02And then the other
11:03massive update
11:04that's for both
11:05of these phones,
11:06this is awesome,
11:07is 7 years
11:08of OS,
11:09security,
11:10and feature drop
11:11updates
11:12for the 8
11:13and 8 Pro.
11:147 years.
11:15Which seems like
11:16something they
11:17probably
11:18should have already
11:19been doing
11:20with Google's own phone
11:21running Google's own chips
11:22and Google's own software.
11:23But yeah,
11:24that's,
11:25think about that,
11:26that's pretty sick.
11:27They're leading the way.
11:28This is a phone
11:29that's going to get
11:30its last software update
11:31in 2030.
11:32Good looks Google.
11:33But also yeah,
11:34they announced an update
11:35to the Pixel Watch 2.
11:36It is in the same
11:37super sleek
11:38pebble design
11:39so it's going to
11:40look the same
11:41from the outside.
11:42But now inside
11:43there is a new
11:44smart watch
11:45that should speed
11:46things up significantly
11:47and also potentially
11:48extend the battery life
11:49by a little bit
11:50because they're
11:51promising 24 hours
11:52but with always on
11:53display on now
11:54instead of off.
11:55And there's a bunch
11:56of newly redesigned
11:57apps like Gmail
11:58and Calendar.
11:59And then it just
12:00felt like they added
12:01a bunch of stuff
12:02that we also
12:03recently saw
12:04added to the Apple Watch.
12:05So there's a new
12:06safety check feature
12:07that works almost
12:08exactly like
12:09the one Apple
12:10just announced.
12:11They also added
12:12a skin temperature
12:13auto workout
12:14start and stop
12:15detection.
12:16And they also added
12:17backup and restore
12:18which actually
12:19other watches
12:20have had for a while
12:21and they should have
12:22had this ages ago
12:23but they also
12:24now have that.
12:25If you look at
12:26the back of the watch
12:27there's a bunch
12:28of improved sensors
12:29that should better
12:30monitor heart rate
12:31and health data
12:32while you're moving
12:33around a lot
12:34more vigorously.
12:35And this watch
12:36will launch at the
12:37same price
12:38that last year's
12:39did so $349
12:40for the wifi only
12:41and $399 starting
12:42at $399.
12:43So you can
12:44see that
12:45matte finish
12:46or that new color
12:47through the case
12:48while keeping it
12:49protected.
12:50And even though
12:51it doesn't have
12:52Qi 2 wireless
12:53charging like it
12:54was rumored
12:55that they might
12:56that didn't
12:57stop dbrand
12:58from just
12:59putting a MagSafe
13:00compatible ring
13:01on the back
13:02anyway.
13:03And I also
13:04kind of like
13:05what they did
13:06with the question
13:07mark design
13:08compared to
13:09the classic
13:10Apple MagSafe
13:12but let me know
13:13what you guys
13:14want to see
13:15in the reviews
13:16of each of these
13:17devices the phones
13:18the watches
13:19because
13:20my name is
13:21Marques Brownlee
13:22and it is
13:23Techtober
13:24officially
13:25and there's going
13:26to be a bunch
13:27of videos
13:28in the next
13:29couple weeks
13:30so stay tuned
13:31for that stuff
13:32get subscribed
13:33alright
13:34catch you in the
13:35next one
13:36peace.
