00:00Hey what's up guys, MKBHD here and this is your first look at the brand new Samsung Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20 Plus.
00:13Now there's a whole new lineup of Samsung phones out right now, they're going all out for 2020 clearly.
00:17So we have the Galaxy S20, the Galaxy S20 Plus and a new Galaxy S20 Ultra.
00:25I've got an entire separate video on that S20 Ultra, it's the new Pro version in their lineup.
00:30But that phone starts, starts at $1399 and we don't all have a G and a half to spend on a new phone no matter how nice it is.
00:39So these are the true successors to the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus, the S20 and S20 Plus.
00:46And to me this is actually one of the biggest jumps up I've seen Samsung take with their phones.
00:50Literally everything you can think of is upgraded and they've taken the biggest jumps in the most important areas of the phone.
00:56So the screen, the battery and the cameras.
01:00So let's start with the screen, these are now 6.2 inch and 6.7 inch displays respectively.
01:06And they are 120 hertz quad HD OLED displays.
01:11So super high resolution, HDR plus and super responsive high refresh rate screens.
01:17This is the train I've been telling you guys flagships are all going to get on in 2020.
01:20And to match that super high refresh rate, Samsung has also doubled the touch sensitivity to a 240 hertz sample rate.
01:28Meaning it responds to touch input twice as fast.
01:32And the whole new speed difference is instantly noticeable.
01:35Now obviously it's still tough for me to show you guys in this 30 FPS YouTube video.
01:40But yeah literally everything from swiping around the UI to opening and closing apps and scrolling and eventually of course gaming.
01:49Everything will look and feel smoother.
01:51And I think Samsung has also tweaked some of these animations in one UI to be a bit shorter and snappier too.
01:56So you can easily tell it feels way smoother than 60 hertz.
02:01And I can actually tell the difference versus 90 as well which I've gotten used to.
02:06Hey, Editor Marques here real quick with a little message, a little asterisk.
02:10So Galaxy S20s at 120 hertz are actually going to be limited to 1080p.
02:16Not full resolution 1440p.
02:18So this is something I just found out later after the briefing.
02:21I didn't even really notice while using it.
02:23But if you get the phone out of the box, it will be at 1440p and at 60 hertz.
02:29And when you go into the settings to change it to move it up to 120 hertz, it will lock you at 1080p.
02:34Probably to save battery life and power and things like that.
02:37Small asterisk on what we've learned about the phone.
02:40But figured I'd let you know.
02:42Back to the video.
02:43So I'm super happy about the screen.
02:45And on top of all that, there's now the center hole punch you can see.
02:49Which I actually prefer because unlike the corners, there's usually nothing being blocked in the middle.
02:54And it's now actually flatter.
02:56Which is so unlike Samsung because they've always been the ones to push the curved glass melting over the sides.
03:02But hey, new decade, new Samsung.
03:04Now this display doesn't melt over the edge nearly as much or kind of at all.
03:09It's much more flat and in my opinion, much more usable.
03:13And they still have the ultrasonic fingerprint reader of course underneath the display.
03:16Now let's talk about battery for a second.
03:18They have increased the battery sizes on all these phones by a healthy amount too.
03:23So it's a 4000mAh battery on the smaller S20 and a 4500mAh battery on the S20+.
03:30So they're not trying to make these phones super razor thin which is great.
03:34They're actually just a tiny bit thicker.
03:37But it's also probably because with a huge bright 120Hz display, you're going to want all the battery you can get.
03:44So this is something we're going to have to test of course when we get the phone in for the full review.
03:48But I'm at least glad to see on the spec sheet much larger cells.
03:52Plus there's still 25W fast charging with that charger included in the box and wireless charging too.
03:58And while we're at it, let's hit the specs.
04:00Boom! There you go.
04:02High-end CPU and insane 12GB of RAM on all of them.
04:07Expandable storage, IP68 certified.
04:10I mean these phones are complete on the spec sheet.
04:12Not quite as wild as the S20 Ultra but still no big shortcomings as you'd expect from a Samsung flagship.
04:19And the entire lineup is also all 5G capable.
04:23But I don't think this is quite a game changer as much as some people will try to make it out to be.
04:28You know the S20 and S20 Plus, they will not do millimeter wave so only sub 6 5G.
04:34And so it will say 5G in the corner but we talked about this in a previous video.
04:39It's only going to be up to about 20% faster than good 4G on a good day.
04:44And so I wouldn't buy this phone just for the 5G.
04:47So anyway, let's hit the last and probably most important new piece of these new phones with the Galaxy S20.
04:52And that is the cameras.
04:53They are a huge focus for Samsung in these new phones this year, pun intended.
04:57And I haven't seen the unpacked slideshow slides yet.
05:01I'm recording this before that.
05:03But I'd be willing to bet that probably half of them, at least half, are about cameras.
05:09So you're looking at a new triple camera setup for the S20.
05:12And the S20 Plus has room for an extra depth sensor but otherwise they're the same things here.
05:17With a new 12MP main sensor at f1.8.
05:21Then there's a 3X 64MP telephoto camera at f2.
05:26And a 12MP ultrawide at f2.2.
05:29And they are all physically larger sensors than last year which is great for pretty much everything.
05:35Light sensitivity, low light performance and anything else basically to do with photography.
05:40And there's some serious zoom capabilities.
05:43Not just optical zoom but with software giving you a 10X multiplier.
05:47That's going to give you a comfortable 30X hybrid zoom.
05:50And I know this isn't a video about the Ultra but that phone has a 10X zoom.
05:55Which means the hybrid zoom with software will go up to a 100X which is ridiculous.
06:01But they'll call all of this space zoom.
06:04Could have called it galaxy zoom but I guess that works as well.
06:07But the nice cherry on top of all of this is they're all capable of 8K 24FPS video across the whole lineup.
06:16Now 8K video in a smartphone camera sounds incredible.
06:20Sounds like something I'd put in my dream phone.
06:22But there is a catch.
06:244K was already big but 8K video is 33MP per frame.
06:29Which is awesome because you can get the flexibility of being able to pull 33MP stills from a video.
06:36But to get that you have to have a window of a sensor big enough to shoot 8K video.
06:41Which means you need at least a 33MP sensor.
06:44And the main camera on these phones like I mentioned is that 12MP sensor.
06:49It's the 3X telephoto that's 64MP.
06:53So when you go into the settings and turn the video resolution to 8K like I did.
06:58That's going to be coming from that telephoto camera not the main camera.
07:02So it's going to punch in a bit as you can tell.
07:04Which definitely drops it a bit on the convenience side.
07:07Also 8K doesn't support tracking autofocus or video effects.
07:12Which are some things to note as it says here in the settings.
07:14So they do technically shoot 8K yes but it's not from the main sensor.
07:18It's punched in.
07:19There's just a little bit extra to think about when maxing out video on these phones.
07:23So it's not like the dream world where we can stream 8K over 5G to YouTube without even thinking about it.
07:30Just not quite there yet.
07:31Either way though as you can tell with the entire rest of this phone.
07:35Not a whole lot to dislike.
07:37Even a lot of the little stuff they changed I'm liking too.
07:40The buttons situation.
07:41So now the buttons have moved back over to the right hand side.
07:44And the dedicated Bixby button is gone.
07:47They're also pretty lightweight phones as well.
07:50Despite their size and the bigger batteries.
07:52I was impressed with how good they feel in the hand.
07:54And how light they are compared to some other big phones.
07:56And Samsung's One UI 2.0 has some neat improvements as well.
08:00Now I'd be lying if I said I loved it.
08:03It's still far from my favorite flavor of Android.
08:06There's still things like building a zoom preview into the camera app now.
08:10So when you're zoomed in super far.
08:12You still get that preview in the top left of what the hell you're zooming into.
08:16Which is super useful.
08:17And there's other stuff like Spotify now integrated into Bixby routines.
08:20And HD Google Duo video chat built natively into the dialer.
08:24And some other stuff like the subtle new animations.
08:27And there's also a new single take mode in the camera.
08:31It's like the opposite of pro mode.
08:33Basically instead of you doing all the hard work of taking several photos and videos.
08:37You just hit the shutter button once and point it at some action.
08:41And it will decide for you when to take photos and videos.
08:44Based on when eyes are open and faces are smiling and stuff.
08:48Seems kind of cool but this isn't something I think I'll ever use.
08:51Call me crazy but I like taking the photos myself.
08:53But at the end of the day.
08:54If you look back at this whole thing.
08:56You go down the spec sheet and everything they've done with this phone.
08:58It's hard to find anything you could consider a weakness or a complaint.
09:03Or a downside or a bad thing about this phone.
09:05Aside from maybe the price.
09:07Now of course a lot of this is on paper.
09:09And based on like the two hours that I spent with this phone getting this footage.
09:13But honestly I'm excited to review this phone.
09:15Definitely subscribe to be among the first to see that when it comes out.
09:19If you haven't already.
09:20Yeah is it too early to call Samsung a front runner for the most improved award?
09:25Just based on how many things are better about this phone.
09:27I don't know. Something to think about.
09:29Either way.
09:30Thanks for watching and definitely check out the Galaxy S20 Ultra video.
09:33First link below the like button.
09:35If you haven't already watched that.
09:36Check that one out too.
09:37Catch you guys in the next one.
09:39Peace.
