00:00Hey what's up, MKBHD here.
00:04Ok, so this new Pixel tablet is really interesting.
00:08I got to spend about an hour with it before this announcement
00:11and I've come away both knowing that I don't need one
00:15but really liking it anyway.
00:16So welcome to this first hands-on and first impressions video.
00:19Also, feel free to check out the Pixel Fold Impressions
00:21which also has gone live today.
00:24It's an $1800 folding phone from Google.
00:27Pretty crazy, I'll link it below.
00:29But also, make sure to get subscribed and stay tuned
00:31because we have a video of something a little more exclusive coming up
00:34also from Google that you probably haven't seen yet.
00:37But this tablet, this tablet is $499.
00:41So really competitively priced
00:43and it basically has one killer feature.
00:45You kind of probably already know where I'm going with this.
00:47So design-wise, it's pretty simple, right?
00:50Pretty basic with this aluminum enclosure
00:52but fully coated in this soft-touch finish that's really nice.
00:55It almost doesn't even feel like metal anymore which is funny.
00:58It's also pretty lightweight.
01:00There's a single 8-megapixel camera on the back
01:03and a power button that doubles as the fingerprint reader at the corner.
01:06Overall, it looks like a pretty normal tablet, right?
01:08So what's the killer feature?
01:10Is it a software trick?
01:12Is it the screen?
01:13Is it a stylus?
01:15Well, you see those four pins down at the bottom of the tablet
01:18right below that Google logo on the back?
01:21Those are power and data pins
01:24that line up with these four pins on this dock
01:27that's included in the box.
01:29Sick.
01:30So with the power of magnets,
01:32this tablet slaps onto the back
01:34and basically becomes a Google Nest Hub Max, more or less.
01:37So this is the thing they gave us a teaser of at the last IO
01:40and honestly, it's as awesome as it looks.
01:42It works great.
01:43There's enough magnets that there's like a pretty firm pressure needed
01:46to take the tablet off of the dock
01:48but when you put it back on, it grabs it and holds it firmly in place.
01:52And through those pins, it instantly starts charging at 15 watts
01:56and connects to the larger speaker inside the dock.
01:59So that's upgraded audio over the tablet's built-in speakers.
02:03So a couple of things on this.
02:04First of all, I'm kind of surprised that we hadn't seen this earlier.
02:07We have seen a couple more basic versions of this.
02:10There was a Lenovo tablet a while ago that would like dock into a speaker
02:14but I'm glad to see Google actually fleshing out this idea
02:17and doubling up on its use.
02:19They told me something like 80 plus percent of tablet use happens in the home.
02:25So for those other 20% when it's just sitting around your home,
02:28it makes sense to just like pop it onto a dock
02:30and now it's this nice polished Nest Hub display.
02:33But then also, I'm pretty pumped about the dock actually being included in the box
02:38but do note, it is the only charger included in the box.
02:41So there is a USB-C port on the side of the tablet
02:44but there isn't any like USB-C cable or wall brick to plug straight into the wall.
02:49So the only charger is the dock, which is fine.
02:52But if you have another USB-C cable, it will charge via a wire.
02:54But then the dock itself, it does not charge via USB-C.
02:57It charges with a wall wart to this like barrel charger.
03:00So just so you know.
03:01Also, theoretically, I guess you could go out and buy a couple more of these docks
03:04and put them in other places around your home if you just wanted to.
03:08I'm not actually sure what the price of just the dock would be yet.
03:11If they're going to sell that individually, I'll ask.
03:14I'll put a little update up here if Google is able to answer by the time I post this video.
03:18But it seems like, yeah, one in the living room, one in the bedroom could be a thing.
03:22But then when you pop the tablet onto the dock and lock it,
03:25it activates what's called hub mode.
03:27And basically, it just becomes a Google Nest Hub.
03:30And so it can do any of the things that a Nest Hub would do.
03:33It can be a digital photo frame if you want it to be.
03:36It can be, of course, a smart home control panel,
03:39which is what most people want a home hub to do.
03:41There's also some smart settings in here about not letting you into all of your other apps
03:47when it is your family's screen.
03:49That's why you lock it to enable this mode.
03:51But then when you're using it as your personal tablet, you unlock it and have access to everything.
03:55Oh, also, they made this pretty unique case that has a wire stand that holds it up surprisingly firmly.
04:02But since it's just a big circular wire, it has enough room to slap it onto the dock and not be interrupted.
04:09There's no extra magnets needed, so you don't have to take the case off to dock it.
04:12Pretty smart.
04:13Either way, I'm just thinking this is basically doubling up the functionality of the tablet.
04:18The Nest Hub Max that's on sale right now is like $230.
04:22So, hey, if you're going to spend $500 on a tablet and you also get that device out of it, it's kind of cool.
04:29The rest of the tablet, honestly, pretty mid.
04:32It's just very average.
04:34There's not too much crazy other stuff going on with the specs.
04:37I think the spec for the display probably tells the whole story about the rest of the tablet.
04:43This is an 11-inch, 60-hertz LCD display.
04:47It's 2560x1600, which is pretty solid, and very reasonable brightness for using it around the house and indoors.
04:53Nothing too crazy, 500 nits.
04:55It's going to be perfectly fine for watching videos or movies on the couch or even handing it to a kid,
05:01which is what a lot of people do with tablets nowadays.
05:03But it's not trying to compete at the high end like a workstation, high refresh rate iPad type of thing.
05:08Fun fact, too, though, you can also get one with a black bezel.
05:12They've showed all these teasers of the ones with white bezels, and I was always commenting on that on the podcast.
05:16But it turns out the porcelain color and rose color have white bezels, but the hazel-colored one has black bezels.
05:23So you at least have that choice.
05:25There is also a Tensor G2 chip inside, so the same chip we've had for half a year in the Pixel 7 line.
05:30There's 8 gigs of RAM and either 128 or 256 gigs of storage and a 27-watt-hour battery,
05:36which I believe will translate to right around 7,000 milliamp-hours.
05:41The 8-megapixel camera on the back, it's super basic. It doesn't even have a portrait mode.
05:44That's not really the focus of this device.
05:46The cameras are more just for being able to do simple photos and video calls like you'd find on a Nest Hub.
05:53I do wonder if you could use this tablet while docked as a security camera.
05:57I'm not sure. I didn't get to try that or find that during my demo time,
06:00but I'll definitely be digging around for that sort of stuff in the full review.
06:03But I also said this in the Pixel Fold impressions video, which is it's an Android tablet still.
06:09And it's been a minute since we've had a real hit of an Android tablet.
06:13Probably for Google, it's been since the Nexus 7.
06:16And so this one has a pretty clear value proposition of the killer feature of it being two devices in one.
06:23But then you still have the software question, which is like, what are you actually going to do on this tablet?
06:27Now, I think with a middle-tier media tablet like this, people probably won't be asking that question as much.
06:33But still, for me, I just wonder, like, what about multitasking?
06:37What about split-screen apps and all the other things you expect out of a big screen?
06:41So I think Google's being smart about intentionally not starting with some crazy $800 premium tablet
06:48because that's what people will be asking and immediately starting to try to do with a powerful high-end tablet.
06:53But with this one, you just cover the basics, like side-by-side split-screen multitasking is here.
06:59And even optimizing Google's 50-plus apps for tablets.
07:02They've talked a big game about this, so they have multi-column layouts.
07:05And they don't just look like stretched-out smartphone apps, which is good.
07:08They're really responsive to the size of the screen.
07:10So this tablet will benefit from all the improvements that also went into the $1,800 Pixel Fold, which is pretty cool.
07:18But yeah, I think for a $499 tablet, it settles nicely into the mid-range.
07:23Oh, actually, here we go.
07:24Just a little update. I just got an email back saying Google will be selling the dock separately from the tablet if you want another one for $130.
07:32Think about it like that. It's pretty good value.
07:35$500 for the tablet and the dock means you get about $370 for the tablet and $130 for the dock.
07:41That's pretty cheap. It's pretty good.
07:43I'm curious what you guys are thinking.
07:45Let me know in the comments if you think you'd be interested in getting one of these.
07:47But more importantly, what do you want to see in the full review when we get one here and test everything?
07:53Because we're going to do it.
07:54Okay, that's been it.
07:56Thanks for watching.
07:57Catch you in the next one.
07:59Peace.
