00:00All right, let's talk about Apple M2 Pro and M2 Max hardware.
00:05So, over the past few days, I've been checking out some of their new devices,
00:08and if you compare to the M1 equivalents, there's some very obvious performance uplifts,
00:12mostly in the GPU department. That's where it's like the biggest gains.
00:15But one thing that I noticed that was quite interesting is that the 14-inch and the 16-inch
00:19are quite different in performance this year.
00:22Like, the gap is a lot more noticeable this year than it was last year.
00:26So, let's get into it. M2 Pro and M2 Max.
00:29If you compare them to M1 Pro and Max, M2 has a couple more CPU cores,
00:33and there's options for more GPU cores. You can now cap it at 38 GPU cores instead of 32.
00:38There's options for more RAM or the ability to hold more RAM,
00:42so up to 96 gigs now can go into the 16-inch model.
00:45It's got Wi-Fi 6E support. It has a claimed longer battery life.
00:49There was one thing I noticed on, like, the product website.
00:52The 16-inch model this year is supposed to be a little bit heavier,
00:55by, like, I don't know, 100 grams or so, than last year's 16-inch model.
00:58But when I compared them on a scale, they were almost identical.
01:01So, if there's any kind of difference in weight, it's seemingly insignificant.
01:04So, this year, there's no major innovative feature.
01:07It really is focused on the new chips.
01:09So, these are better in single and multi-core CPU performance,
01:12if you compare them to the M1 stuff.
01:14But, for most workflows, it's not going to be some game-changing leap
01:17compared to what the high-end M1 chips were already offering us before.
01:21However, if you take a look at the energy consumption,
01:23there is some interesting stuff going on.
01:25At full CPU load, the M2 Max chip needs to consume more power than the M1 Max chip.
01:31It's about, like, a 5-watt difference in terms of package consumption,
01:35but that can add up.
01:37Now, these systems can easily handle that bump in wattage.
01:41The 14-inch and the 16-inch, like, you could run Cinebench full blast for, like, 8 days,
01:46and it wouldn't see any decline in performance.
01:48Now, when it comes to the GPU of M2 Pro and M2 Max, this has even bigger gains.
01:53It's very impressive when you look at some benchmarks,
01:56but real-world gains you get from these GPUs are going to vary from app to app.
02:00It really depends on how the developers have utilized that technology,
02:04so some apps will get massive gains, other apps less so.
02:08Now, if you take a look at energy consumption here,
02:11at the top end, these GPUs can push about 50 watts,
02:15which is, again, like, I don't know, 6, maybe 7 watts more
02:18than what the M1 Max could do last year.
02:20So, if you have a full GPU load and you combine it with a full CPU load,
02:24that's when the 14-inch model has a tougher time,
02:26and there's the gap between what the 16-inch model can do versus the 14-inch model
02:31is much more pronounced this year compared to what the M1 devices did last year.
02:35And I think it's just because it's a bigger die.
02:37These things pull more wattage, and they give you better performance,
02:39but because these chassis haven't changed in shape or size,
02:43the 16-inch, with its bigger fans and just more space in there,
02:46is going to have more thermal headroom.
02:48OK, a quick note about battery life.
02:50So, the battery life is still one of the most impressive things
02:53that I find about Apple Silicon.
02:55It's so crazy what they're able to do, even with the high-end chips.
02:59So, there is a noticeable improvement in battery life
03:01when it comes to running light tasks,
03:03but when it came to heavier loads, there was no real difference
03:05compared to the M1 Pro and M1 Max devices.
03:08But the M2 devices this year, they are a pretty obvious spec bump.
03:12Again, not like a major innovative change.
03:15It does feel like Apple looked at this product line this year,
03:18and was like, yeah, it's an eco-round, right?
03:20Maybe the upcoming recession, maybe because of their development cycle,
03:23they didn't want to blow too much on this year's kind of changes.
03:27But if you're looking for a GPU upgrade, it's there.
03:30I think if you're coming from older Intel hardware,
03:32this is a solid year to pick something up.
03:34But if you want something less expensive than brand-new M2 options,
03:38the M1 Pro and M1 Max options, like the Refurb Store,
03:41that's a solid thing to hit up now.
03:44But if you're in a privileged position,
03:47you already have some M1 Pro or M1 Max hardware,
03:51I'd skip this one.
