00:00Only touch the pedestal and the world will be saved. Better the world burn than
00:06she be loosed upon it. Is that so? Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're
00:11looking at 10 times Ubisoft betrayed the fans of its flagship series Assassin's
00:16Creed. Spoilers for almost every entry ahead so watch at your own peril. Or was
00:22it that I taste the power and found myself intoxicated? I wish I had been
00:28stronger. As do I. Before we begin we publish new content all week long so be
00:35sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:39Last Gen Only Assassin's Creed Rogue
00:49In 2014 Rogue was only released on last-gen consoles but Unity was released
00:55on the same day for the newer generation. This decision disappointed
00:59fans because Rogue was unplayable on their new hardware. Either they had to
01:04keep an older console, buy one, or just wait until a remastered version became
01:09available. We'll now burn their brotherhood to the ground. For those who
01:17chose the latter they would be waiting until 2018 when Ubisoft finally released
01:23a remaster for newer consoles. Rogue also had an interesting narrative however it
01:28was designed for older hardware meaning it lacked the technical improvements of
01:32Unity. This sent the message that it was a secondary game despite fans believing
01:38it had the potential to be as good as Unity or even better.
01:42You're right Colonel. Fake Season Pass Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Assassin's
01:47Creed Valhalla's ambitious post-launch plan features the season pass that
01:52includes two massive expansions and a bonus quest. At release Ubisoft sold a
01:57misleading season pass for Valhalla. Many assumed it would include all the DLC but
02:03instead it was only some of the DLCs. Dawn of Ragnarok, one of the most
02:08anticipated additions, was irritatingly not included in the pass. After spending
02:14almost $40 on the pass and even more on the game this still wasn't enough to get
02:19everything. Another $40 was needed for Dawn of Ragnarok.
02:31In total to buy Valhalla and all its contents would be roughly $140. This felt
02:39like a cash grab to most players leading them to feel taken advantage of and their
02:44trust betrayed. Especially since previous entries did include all the content in
02:49their season passes. The experience and the memorable character of Assassin's
02:53Creed Valhalla. We just really hope to entertain you as you write your own
02:56Viking saga. Shift from Stealth. Assassin's Creed Origins.
03:07Originally stealth was an integral part of the franchise's core mechanics but in
03:12Origins the focus shifted towards direct combat and RPG elements with stealth
03:18being sidelined. While the RPG elements were praised for their innovation and
03:23for refreshing an almost 10 year old series, fans felt the series had lost its
03:28distinctness and become too similar to games like The Witcher 3 or Skyrim
03:32sacrificing its unique elements.
03:41Many players adored the new direction of Origins but some longtime fans felt
03:46alienated, missing the stealth, parkour and precision assassinations of prior
03:51entries. The fan base became divided, the previously loyal fans giving up on the
03:57series entirely.
04:05Whatever happened to Juno?
04:10Assassin's Creed 3 was the series's fifth entry which sought to resolve Desmond's
04:19plotline introduced in the first game. After five years of build-up the
04:24conclusion was disappointing to say the least. Desmond is the central protagonist
04:30and his arc ends with him sacrificing himself to stop the apocalypse but in
04:35doing so releases Juno.
04:44The game ends on a cliffhanger but whatever happened to Juno, the newly
04:49established villain? You will have to read the comics to find out which are
04:53unknown to most fans. Many hoped for a more satisfying conclusion to the game
04:58but were instead given a hollow cliffhanger ending which tied together
05:02little from the previous games and was barely delivered upon.
05:15Being a return to roots Assassin's Creed Mirage.
05:21She is with your rebels at the Waterman's Throne. I will slow the guards.
05:28Mirage was heavily marketed as a return to roots with Ubisoft promising it would
05:33bring back the classic stealth, parkour and assassination focused gameplay of
05:38earlier titles. Longtime fans were excited by this prospect, particularly
05:43the ones who were disinterested in the RPG trilogy. Unfortunately a lot of fans
05:48felt it didn't live up to these promises. He made me do it. Who is he? Not Ahmed
05:55surely. I don't know his name for he always wears the mask. It made
06:00considerable effort to return to form but it still retained the RPG mechanics
06:05and open-world design choices of the recent games. As such it felt like what
06:09it was originally intended to be, just another Valhalla DLC. This combination of
06:14old-school and modern elements felt like a compromise instead of a genuine
06:19return to roots. It was my fault. I came to make amends but I was too late.
06:26Lucy's Dark Secret, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed
06:31Revelations. Ezio and the villagers after the attack I can see them now. I know
06:37it's difficult but try to compartmentalize Desmond. Focus on the
06:41present. Lucy was widely regarded as the best character in the modern-day
06:45storyline, who upsettingly died at the end of Brotherhood. She was a mentor to
06:50Desmond, being portrayed as a sympathetic, strong and trusted ally to
06:55him. Unfortunately in the lost archive DLC for Revelations, it was revealed that
07:00she'd secretly been a Templar triple agent all along. We're counting on you
07:05Lucy. You have served the Templar order well and we never forget loyalty. The
07:11decision to reveal this plot twist in a DLC, alongside not at all foreshadowing
07:16it, felt like a stab in the gut to most fans.
07:19Additionally, the games barely explored Desmond's emotions regarding her death
07:24and betrayal, making the twist feel even more hollow. Relegating her betrayal and
07:29backstory to a DLC felt like a disservice to both the character and the
07:34fans. I saw what she was. What would happen if I let her live? I could have
07:40stopped myself. I mean, there was a force there, but I didn't have to. I chose to.
07:47The Helix Store, Assassin's Creed Unity
07:52Unity introduced a new online shop where players could purchase in-game items for
08:04real money. This was the Helix Store and represented a shift towards Ubisoft
08:10favoring exploitative and intrusive monetization strategies. In-game
08:14progression was deliberately slowed down, motivating players to purchase XP
08:18bonuses from the store. This was outrageous to a lot of players, who had
08:24already spent money on the game and were now expected to spend more to have an
08:28optimal gaming experience.
08:36Some of the best-looking gear was locked behind the paywall, as opposed to earlier
08:42entries where they were all unlocked from in-game challenges. Fans were now
08:46starting to realize Ubisoft cared more about money, rather than delivering a
08:51complete standalone experience.
08:59Missing Sequences, Assassin's Creed 2
09:05Just like that night in Alba, capito?
09:10Two entire memory sequences were removed from Assassin's Creed 2, 12 and 13.
09:16Instead, the narrative just jumped from sequence 11 straight to 14, with only a
09:22vague explanation that they were corrupted. This gave the impression that
09:26the game was deliberately released incomplete, and that you had to pay to
09:30unlock essential moments in the story.
09:34It disrupted the game's narrative, and went against the fans'
09:41reasonable wishes of receiving a full product. Relegating core content to DLC
09:46felt like a violation of the implicit contract between the developer and the
09:50players. This was the first time Ubisoft seemed to prioritize money over releasing
09:55a finished game, and it definitely wouldn't be the last.
10:00Having a buggy launch, Assassin's Creed Unity.
10:06Unity was highly anticipated in 2014, as Assassin's Creed was a
10:18franchise that then had a strong track record of quality games. Set during the
10:23French Revolution, fans expected an immersive historical experience, but it
10:27was almost impossible to feel that upon release. It was plagued with bugs and
10:32glitches, such as graphical issues making faces disappear, character models
10:36disappearing, and constant crashes, severely impacting its playability.
10:46The poor release date seriously hampered the game's reputation, and despite it being
10:51relatively stable now, after some seriously delayed updates, the damage has
10:55already been done. Fans with high expectations of exploring revolutionary
11:00Paris felt nothing but betrayed, with consumers still hesitating to buy a
11:04Ubisoft game at release, just in case they repeat the same mistake.
11:14Desmond's Death, Assassin's Creed 3.
11:20Ultimately, deciding to kill off the game's central protagonist was the series's biggest betrayal.
11:26Its effects can still be felt in the most recent entries, which are still struggling to figure out a direction for the modern-day plotline.
11:30His story was built up with significant intrigue, and tied together all the historical plots with a
11:35Desmond's fate was sealed with little honor, feeling like it was done just to quickly resolve his arc, and avoid giving him the send-off he deserved.
12:05Now, the modern-day plotline is one of the most hated elements of the franchise,
12:09and few fans bother to invest themselves in it, worried their investment won't be
12:14rewarded with any meaningful or satisfying conclusions.
12:24How do you feel Ubisoft most betrayed you with the Assassin's Creed series? Let us know in the comments.
12:35Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed the video, there's more where that came from.
