00:00Hello, and welcome along to Invicta Sport. We're the only TV show on your television
00:20dedicated to wrapping up all of Kent's sporting action. I'm Finn McDermid, and here's what
00:24you can expect on this Monday 14th October. For win and county, after the last round of
00:31qualifying we take a look at the Kent teams fighting in the next round of the FA Cup.
00:36Scali shut out, we take a close up look at the life of former Gillingham chairman Paul
00:40Scali after his removal. And leaping over life's hurdles, Team GB athletes relay their
00:46experience to the next generation of Kent students. But first a round up, but first
00:52excuse me, a round up of the headlines. Bradley Ray from Lyd, known for success in the British
00:57Superbikes Championship, has stated his intention for another title after striking a deal to
01:02return to the UK series. After winning the title in 2022 with OMG Racing Yamaha, Ray
01:09switched to the Superbike World Championship with Italian squad Moto X Racing Yamaha. But
01:14with his best being a sixth place finish, the Lyd rider says he's very excited to be
01:19returning to his former team, and that his stint in the World Championship has given
01:23him a higher motivation and helped his development as a rider. Next, it's rare for one player
01:29to get a hat trick, it's rare for two, but I can't even comprehend the number, how rare
01:34it might be for a pair of twins to both net three goals in one match. Amelia and Madison
01:41Woodgate both scored three, with the former completing the task in only the first half
01:46to help Chatham Town in a 12-mil thrashing over Horsham last Sunday to shoot the side
01:51into the first round proper of the Women's FA Cup. According to manager Keith Bonas,
01:56he can sometimes struggle to tell the pair apart, aside from their differently coloured
02:00boots, but I don't think he's complaining if they keep scoring the way they have been.
02:05And it's more success for Kent, with one rugby team, the Tonbridge Juddians, adding a win
02:09at Havant to their growing list of victories in the National League to East. The win marks
02:15their sixth in a row after the close match which ended 39-31. Havant were newly promoted
02:21so the Juddians were careful to keep their unbeaten streak alive. While the Tonbridge
02:25side kept ahead of Havant for most of the match, most things got more intense for the
02:29away side when the hosts managed to get within five points after two catch and drives and
02:34a couple of conversions. The Juddians will play fourth place Canterbury this Saturday.
02:39Now let's take a look back at this weekend's football results, where it was the final stretch
02:44for the Kent teams still in the FA Cup qualifiers, with Maidstone and Ebbsfleet facing off in
02:49a duel. Meanwhile, Gillingham faced Accrington Stanley, hoping to regain some of that early
02:53spark they've lacked. Well, here's Bartholomew.
02:59A return to the FA Cup and a return to the Gallagher, a stadium which gave Maidstone
03:03a lot of success on their route to the fifth round of the competition last season, a run
03:07that placed them in the competition's history books. Meanwhile, Hurry Watling's Ebbsfleet
03:11were looking for some success of their own, having crashed out of the FA Cup thanks to
03:15a replay at Slough at this stage last time. Action got underway quick, with just six minutes
03:20on the clock, when a throw-in taken long by the Stones found Aaron Blair at the far post,
03:25whose header was judged to have crossed the line despite the fleet keeper's catch, sending
03:29the crowd into raptures and handing the first-round proper place provisionally into Maidstone's
03:34palm. One-nil to the hosts.
03:39Home-fuelled pressure continued on from Maidstone, as a cleanly driven 25-yard shot from skipper
03:44Sam Corn ended up just inches wide, before a half-chance at a brace from Blair was also
03:49cleanly denied by the width of the goalposts.
03:55The Cup-run fire continued to burn for the Stones, as John Benton chipped the ball to
03:59the edge of the box, where Papadopoulos took a touch to get away from his man before rifling
04:03past Cousins and doubling the lead. Maidstone 2, Ebbsfleet 0.
04:11Heading into the second half, and it was Maidstone keeper Alexis-Andre Junior who was quickly
04:15put to work, coming quickly off the line to deny Rakish Bingham from claiming Ebbsfleet's
04:19opener. Despite the best efforts, though, Maidstone soon gained back possession as play
04:24worked right to George Fowler, whose ball inside the box was headed back across the
04:28goal by Papadopoulos for Blair to nod home, confirming Maidstone's place in the hat for
04:33the first-round proper draw. Full-time, Maidstone 3, Ebbsfleet 0.
04:39Elsewhere in the FA Cup qualifiers, Jamie Fielding scored the winner for Tunbridge Angels,
04:43winning only their second FA Cup proper place since 1972. Speaking of Kent's only Football
04:48League team, it was a third disappointing League 2 visit for Mark Bonner's side. Despite
04:53Armani Little's second-half opener, Ben Woods equalised for Accrington after an hour, before
04:58Dara Costello found the winner in added time, making it the Gilles' third defeat in a row.
05:02You can imagine we were as angry and frustrated as you could imagine we would be, losing late,
05:07but probably the team that was going to win it was them. We gave them too many chances
05:11second half, way too easy to create a chance against. There's as much work to do with this
05:15team in terms of mentality and organisation and structure as I thought there was when
05:20we were winning games, and the last week's proved it. The level's got to go up miles,
05:24the personality's got to improve miles, the aggression in the game and our organisation
05:28when it goes against us, it can't be so much better.
05:32The result leaves the Gilles' fifth in the table, but still just three points off the
05:36top spot with the second-highest defensive record so far. In the Idsmian Premier Division,
05:41ten-man Dartford were forced to play 40 minutes with a numerical disadvantage as they drew
05:450-0 at home to Hendon. The result gave debutant David Azaya, who's on loan from League 2 Bromley,
05:51his first clean sheet between the posts.
05:54Meanwhile, 1,111 fans watched on at Cheriton Road for a similar result against Hashtag
05:59United. 1-0 was the final score, with Folkestone and Victor also forced to survive with ten
06:04men towards the end.
06:05As for Dover Athletic, the gap at the top of the table was reduced to one point thanks
06:09to their win at Whitehawk. Here's how it looks, with the Whites sat in second, Dartford in
06:14ninth, Folkestone in eleventh and Chatham Town narrowly out of the relegation places in eighteenth.
06:20That's it for your football highlights this week.
06:24Now staying with football, the board of Gillingham FC has voted to remove former club chairman
06:28and owner Paul Scalley as director. The now owner, Brad Gallinson, told around 400 fans
06:33at an open forum that he was frustrated in what little could be said about the departure.
06:37Well, here's what Bartholomew Hall has been finding out.
06:40I've invested 29 years of my life in trying to enable the club to fulfil its huge potential.
06:47Similar words of now ex-director and former owner of Gillingham FC, as the club's board
06:52of directors have overwhelmingly voted to reject his involvement.
06:57Back in 1995, Paul Scalley purchased the Medway club for a grand total of one pound, taking
07:03on debt estimated to have been up to two million pounds at the time. What followed was a golden
07:08era for the club, spending five years in the championship, making three trips to Wembley
07:12and rebuilding Priestfield Stadium.
07:15But in recent years, the relationship between Scalley and the fans has started to drift.
07:19I think we need to draw a line under what's been in the past. There's been good, there's
07:23been bad, there's all sorts of controversy. There's a lot of things been stated about
07:28the former chairman, the owner. It's time that we did move on. We've got new owners
07:33in the club who are very positive.
07:36So after relinquishing ownership in 2022 to American business tycoon Brad Gallinson, Scalley
07:42remained on the board, but following what the club has described as an investigation,
07:46a vote has now been passed to remove him entirely. However, writing on his website, Scalley says
07:51he believes he or someone of his choosing is entitled to remain on the board of directors,
07:56something the club has rejected as a legal misconception. It's expected now that Scalley,
08:01who still has a 30 per cent minority stake, may look to challenge the decision.
08:05Obviously we would think there would be at least one question about the board of directors
08:09issue that's been going on.
08:11At a fan forum, the issue was quickly raised, but Mr Gallinson says his cards were forced
08:15to stay close to his chest.
08:17We are very frustrated with how little we can say about it. So number one is that Mr
08:23Scalley was removed as a director earlier today, both at the football club and GFC Holdings.
08:29So that was concluded.
08:34So whilst fans hope to see how this off-pitch drama plays out, the hope is that Gillingham
08:39can keep its eye on the ball on the pitch and move forward into a new era of stability
08:44and success. Bartholomew Hall for CAME TV.

09:09Now it's time to remind you that you can keep up to date with all the latest sports
09:12news, interviews and features from here on Invictus Sport by heading to our website.
09:16There you'll see videos like this one about a kite surfing school in Peguel Bay who faced
09:21closure from the local council.
09:23Thrilling, adrenaline pumped and sometimes a dangerous sport. Peguel Bay is said to be
09:33the perfect location for it.
09:36Kite surfing is a relatively new sport. They've been out here for the best part of the last
09:4130 years. But suddenly this year the council told them you can't do it anymore.
09:47If they're caught kite surfing now they could be fined under a council PSPO. A voluntary
09:52agreement was previously in place between Natural England and Kent Wildlife Trust allowing
09:57kite surfing at Peguel Bay. And in this bay teaching took place but a council hasn't renewed
10:03this kite surfing school's licence.
10:05The decision slashing their revenue by 70% but the authority said the decision was to
10:11protect wildlife.
10:29The schools don't operate in winter due to the number of migrating birds and the Kent
10:34Wildlife Trust say it is home to rare and endangered coastal and wetland birds which
10:40are in decline. These species are impacted by disturbances from recreational activities
10:46like jet skiing, paddle boarding and kite surfing.
10:50But the community says due to the prominent wind direction this bay is one of the best
10:54places to go.
10:56Then a district council told us they have the duty to enforce the SSSI rules and does
11:00so through the Beach and Coast Public Spaces Protection Order. The PSPO covers the entire
11:05Fannock coastline and prohibits any activity that disturbs wildlife.
11:10Kite surfers, animal conservationists and the council are set to meet in a couple of
11:15weeks time to talk the issue out. But for the surfing community they say this year has
11:20been a wipe out.
11:22Gabriel Morris in Cliffsend.
11:25Now we've reached half time which means it is time for a break but coming up we speak
11:29to Jay Saunders, manager of Tonbridge Angels about his hopes for the team's success after
11:33they made it to the first round proper of the FA Cup.
11:37And we hear advice from Team GB athletes about how to keep moving forward even when it feels
11:41like the whole world is against you featuring a special exclusive message for Kent students
11:45from Sir Sir Mo Farah.
11:48And thank you so much for watching and we'll see you after the break.
11:59Thank you for watching and we'll see you after the break.
12:29Thank you for watching and we'll see you after the break.
12:59Thank you for watching and we'll see you after the break.
13:29Thank you for watching and we'll see you after the break.
13:59Thank you for watching and we'll see you after the break.
14:29Thank you for watching and we'll see you after the break.
14:59Hello and welcome back to Invictus Sport live on KMTV.
15:08Now it was a beautiful moment for any Angels fans this weekend as the Tonbridge side managed
15:15to fight their way into the first round proper of the FA Cup along with 80 other teams.
15:20Tonight the fixtures will be drawn up and all of these teams will need to make their
15:23preparations.
15:24Well I spoke to Jay Saunders, manager of the National League Southside about his thoughts
15:29ahead of what can be a tough competition.
15:32And Jay joins me now.
15:34So Jay it's one of only a few times that Tonbridge have gotten to the FA Cup first round proper
15:39and how does it feel to be a part of that?
15:41Yeah it's fantastic.
15:43I think for anyone who was at the game Saturday and saw the scenes and what it meant to the
15:48supporters and everyone associated with the club it's obviously great that we've as a
15:53management team have been able to play our part in getting us there.
15:55So yeah it was a really good occasion and I was made well aware of the previous record
16:01in the FA Cup so it's nice to finally get to that first round again.
16:06Brilliant and how far would you like Tonbridge to go?
16:09Obviously last year Maidstone proved that that magic can happen.
16:14Yeah look you need that little bit of luck, you need things to go your way.
16:19I think obviously we'll see who we get in the draw today.
16:23I mean there's people who have had their say in what they'd like.
16:26I think for us or for me personally I'd love a TV game.
16:30I think the revenue that brings and the publicity that brings and the sort of awareness to the club.
16:35As you saw like you say with Maidstone what it can do for the club.
16:37So from our point of view I'd love that.
16:41But it just depends really on the draw.
16:42I've had it previous times we've had really good runs in it and other times where the draw just goes against you.
16:48So we'll see who we get tonight.
16:50Obviously the further we get the better I think for all round for everyone that works at the club.
16:54For the financial reasons, for the as I say the publicity, for the future generations if you like of the club as well.
17:01It can have that sort of knock on effect.
17:03So we've just got our fingers crossed and we've done our part in getting through and hopefully the draw is kind to us.
17:10Now speaking of the draw who would be the ideal team to face and would you prefer it to be at home or away?
17:19I saw our chair Sophie say that she'd love Birmingham away.
17:24I'm kind of split on it.
17:25I think now you don't get the replays.
17:28I feel that a home draw against a good league club and maybe live on TV would be the ultimate draw.
17:36Other people said the lowest ranked team and try and get through another round again to earn more money.
17:42For me I think someone like a Jillian Irwin and a local club at home on TV would be unbelievable.
17:49But like I say it's really it's a tough one because I think some of the players would love to go to a big ground when you hear the Birmingham's and clubs like that in this league or that come into the draw.
18:00Sorry it's a great experience for the players.
18:02So I'm kind of flipped.
18:03I think as a manager and as a management team we're just kind of it's hard for us because as much as we're excited about the draw we're also concentrating and trying to plan for our league game on Saturday.
18:13I would I was going to ask you about that.
18:15So how do you what how would you strike the balance do you think between league matches and the FA Cup now that that's you know now that that's happening.
18:26Yeah we it's like I say it's hard because you get excited by the FA Cup and we're all really pleased to be in that first round.
18:33But at the same time we've got Worthing away on Saturday which for us is a massive game but a really great start to the season and we want to continue that.
18:39So I think as a management team it's up to us to make sure the boys are fully focused on that and we'll get the draw out of the way tonight and then we'll be from tomorrow night at training we'll be concentrating on the Worthing game.
18:48So it is difficult especially when you saw the celebrations after the game Saturday and how much it means to people.
18:54But that's part of our job I guess myself Tom and Blackie my assistants will will be fully focused on getting the boys back down to earth on Tuesday and cracking on with with that league fixture.
19:07Absolutely. And at that match at Cray Wanderers we just heard the you can hear the excitement from the fans.
19:12What do you think it means to them to have you in this competition.
19:16Yeah. When I came to the club everyone sort of spoke about it. I think I was told after the game Saturday so like 50 years they've only been twice in the first round.
19:24So I think the last time that happened unfortunately it was covered so they played Bradford and it was behind closed doors.
19:29So I think for us there's been a lot of pressure for the last two years and like I say with a little bit of luck we've had we've had loads of injuries and stuff last two years and it always coincided with the FA Cup game.
19:39So for us to finally get through I mean I had some lovely messages from supporters about how much it meant and how much it was it was like when they won playoffs was the same feeling and I think that that says it all.
19:52So as I say we're just glad as a team and as a management team and a squad we're happy that we've got there and seeing the players in with the supporters and the supporters singing all the way through the game that they were immense on Saturday.
20:04So yeah I feel like we played our part and hopefully like I say I think for the supporters especially I really hope that we get get a good draw.
20:14And just finally who should we be watching. You mentioned the squad. Who is your standout.
20:20It's a tricky one. We're a really young squad this year. Our average age is about 22 I think. So we've got the experienced ones like you Scott Wagstaff that have played football league and had good runs in the FA Cup.
20:30We've got the Sean Shields who's a really big key player for us. But then we've got some really young exciting players. I think you look defensively the likes of Jamie Fielders, Ronnie Nelsons.
20:43There's that you go into midfield again. We've got the Jeremy Sanders people like this. It's hard to pick out individual. I do really feel like it is a team effort this year. We've got a really good squad and when we leave people out we're not weakening the squad.
20:58But there's a lot of exciting young players that I think that again I think that's why they like a cup run. It puts them in the shop window unfortunately for us. But it's now there's a real good squad there and some really good players I think will go on to have really good careers in the down.
21:13Brilliant. Thank you so much for joining us Jay and best of luck for the next round.
21:17No problem. Thank you very much.
21:20Now knowing how to deal with stress, anxiety and pressure can help to jump over life's hurdles. But is it being taught enough in Kent classrooms?
21:27Ashford Leisure Centre hosted Team GB athletes on World Mental Health Awareness Day to tell their stories of overcoming obstacles from international competition to personal struggles for schools from across the country.
21:38I went down recently to find out more.
21:41It's World Mental Health Day today and a few different schools have travelled to the Stour Leisure Centre in Ashford to learn more about mental health.
21:49Mocks, exams and deciding what you want to do with the rest of your life. There's a lot of pressure on the shoulders of young people today. And not just learning a curriculum but learning key life skills like managing adversity, dealing with stress and anxiety is something these schools also want their students to learn.
22:05But the teachers aren't quite who you might expect. Former Olympic and Paralympic athletes from a variety of sports like long jump, 400 metres and fly swimming.
22:15The athletes gave talks to Year 10s, 11s and 12s from different schools around Kent on their personal journeys with four time Olympian, gold winning long distance runner Mo Farah and Arsenal player Beth Mead sending in video messages.
22:29Even myself for many, many years I struggled and I had lucky enough had my family who supported me, who stood by and heard my story by them. Me talking about it with them, it gave me courage to come forward and talk about it. We all have a story. So whatever you guys do, believe in yourself, keep working hard and don't be afraid.
22:52Former Paralympian Ryan Raghu spoke on the trials he faced being an ethnic minority athlete with cerebral palsy, changing sports from running to long jump to wheelchair rugby and his own personal struggles.
23:04I think the key message or the overriding thing I'd like them to take is they can do it. If you look at the story I've told them, what I've had to overcome, also I never walk and I managed to become an international long jumper. People are going to tell them no. People are going to have expectations of them that may be lower than themselves. Don't believe that. If you want to do something, go and do it.
23:25After the presentations and a brief Q&A session, the students were taught some sitting volleyball, with an emphasis on what sport and exercise can do for your mental health. I was told that the students were given workbooks and I wanted to know how those might help students with mental health awareness.
23:41People get caught up in the moment, in the hustle and bustle of life and they don't really know what they're doing and what they want to achieve. It's just that time for that reflection just to turn around and go, you know what, this is what I want to do, this is how I'm going to get there and there's five years plans in there and there's life goals in there. So just having that little bit of reflection time.
24:00With many different techniques on how to manage your own mental health shared throughout the day, the main takeaway was to talk about things and not just bottle things up. And with all the physical activity, some hydration was needed too. Finn McDermid for KMTV in Ashford.
24:15Now we've reached full time on today's episode, but there's just a few extra minutes of extra time to take a look at this week's action replay. It's the segment where we take a look at clips and pictures that maybe you, the KMTV audience, have sent in as a view taking part in sport. Well, let's see what we've got in store on this week's action replay.
24:33Well, we start this week's action replay with a story of a near miss. Gravesend Dynamite battled their way to the wheelchair rugby national championship, but fell at the last hurdle, losing to Sheffield Eagles on a heart achingly close 38 to 36.
24:48Both teams were neck and neck in the final few minutes on the weekend, but it only took a tough collision between two players for the ref to award a close penalty kick to win the Eagles the trophy, with Gravesend now having to look to next year for a win in the championship.
25:03Next up, Ben Jelf, a powerboat racer from Maidstone, managed to earn himself a top ten finish in the fourth round of the cleverly named F1 H2O championship in China. The elements were against him though, as he said the conditions were the worst he'd ever raced in.
25:20A typhoon warning in the area reduced the qualifying session from three attempts to one, and the race was red flagged on the 11th lap of 32. Jelf finished eighth, but he said he was happy to get some points on the board, but far happier to get him and his boat home in one piece. Hopefully he prefers the weather back home in Kent.
25:40And finally, we finish a little further out from Kent than usual, but that's absolutely fine. We love an away day here on Victor Sport, with a video that's gone viral of Eintracht Frankfurt's nine-year-old goalkeeper. Young Moritz Brand will definitely have the gaffers' attention after skilling his way past five different opponents, going one-on-one with the opposing keeper and slotting it in the far corner to score.
26:03Now, we don't know if the young keeper was put in goal for the day, or plays there regularly, but if he does, Frankfurt will be hoping for a new Manuel Neuer in him.
26:12Well, that's it for this week's Action Replay. Don't forget, it could be you in next week's edition. Just send in your pictures and videos on social media, or to sport at kmtv.co.uk.
26:24Well, that's full time on today's episode of Invictus Sport. If you want more from KMTV, you can head over to our website, kmtv.co.uk, and you can watch all of our special shows, including this one, back on demand.
26:36You can even follow us on social media, and let us know what you've got going on. If you've got a match, if you've got something coming up, we'd love to hear about it. Well, thank you for watching, and bye-bye.
26:53.
