Lotus Emira turbo (inc. 0-100 & braking) review A bargain supercar

00:12I know I've put on weight,
00:14but literally the skin was coming off my face there.
00:19G'day, I'm Paul.
00:20I'm not even kidding.
00:22I've been trying to review this car now
00:24for what feels like months.
00:26Every single time we've organized it,
00:28it has rained.
00:29And we actually got to the point where I'm like,
00:31I don't care if it's raining.
00:32Let's just do the review.
00:33Brought the car down,
00:34and it was raining so hard.
00:36But anyway, we finally have it.
00:38It is the Lotus Amira.
00:39This is the last internal combustion Lotus
00:41before they go all electric.
00:43They've got the Amaia,
00:44they've got the Elettrae as well.
00:45This is the last call on internal combustion.
00:48It's available with turbo four-cylinder
00:50from Mercedes-Benz or Mercedes-AMG,
00:52and also a petrol V6.
00:54This is the Mercedes-AMG version.
00:56I'm excited to drive it.
00:57This is priced at $200,000.
00:59So it is a big chunk of money,
01:01but when you have a look at the rest of the cars
01:03in this set,
01:04it's actually not that expensive.
01:06So today we're going to do a detailed review of this.

01:15Now let's kick off with design.
01:16Just have a look at it.
01:17I just think it looks so good,
01:19especially in this color and spec.
01:21They've just done such a nice job
01:23in creating a car that cuts through traffic.
01:25Like, it just looks totally different
01:27to everything else on the road,
01:28but it still has that sort of Lotus vibe to it.
01:30And even if you have a look at stuff
01:32like the Elettra and the Amaya,
01:34they've just gone hardcore with aero,
01:36and you can see,
01:37this is sort of where it all began.
01:38You've got so much cut out,
01:41and around the car,
01:42you've got so many aero elements
01:44that just give you the vibe
01:45that this is a car
01:46that is going to be going somewhere fast.
01:48Big Lotus logo down the front there,
01:50full LED lights.
01:51Look at this.
01:52Just every angle,
01:53you can actually see
01:54all of that cooling element.
01:55So basically,
01:56air goes through here
01:57and then gets rejected
01:58at the top here
01:59to go around the side of the car.
02:00Around the side here,
02:01you've got a set of 20-inch alloy wheels,
02:0435 profile tire.
02:06This car is available
02:07in three different specs.
02:08You've got a touring spec,
02:09a sports spec,
02:10and a track spec.
02:11So you can actually purchase the car
02:14knowing what you want to do with it.
02:16And if it is, you know,
02:17a car that you want to take to the track constantly,
02:19you want to go down the path of the track spec,
02:21it's got the right tires for it.
02:22Whereas if you are using this as a daily,
02:24you want to be going down the road
02:26of the touring spec.
02:27So I'll be keen to see how this rides
02:29on our bumpy track here
02:30because if you're going to use this as a daily,
02:32you want to know that it's not going to brake you back
02:34every time you go for a drive to work.
02:36Look at these brakes as well.
02:37So 370mm rotors,
02:39six-piston caliper.
02:40They're cross-drilled,
02:41they're slotted.
02:42It is all about performance here.
02:43350mm at the rear.
02:45In terms of weight distribution,
02:4750-50.
02:48That means 50% of the weight
02:49is over the front
02:50and 50% is at the rear.
02:51So it's a perfect distribution there.
02:53In terms of size,
02:54this is shorter than a 911
02:56but wider
02:57and sits on a longer wheelbase.
02:59So I'll be curious to see
03:00how that feels
03:01compared to something like a 911 or a Cayman
03:03in terms of the way that it handles
03:05with that mid-engine setup.
03:06Look at these mirrors too.
03:08Again, more of that aero element.
03:10Door handles,
03:11they sort of sit inside of the body.
03:13So to get into the car,
03:14you pull that
03:15and then that just goes away
03:17once you let go of that handle.
03:19Cooling.
03:20So you've got these ducts
03:21on either side
03:22and that is for the engine.
03:23Mercedes-AMG 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder.
03:26Later on,
03:27we're going to test the sound
03:28to make sure it actually sounds good
03:30because, I don't know,
03:31an AMG 845,
03:33sometimes it just sounds not great.
03:35So hopefully,
03:36this sounds better here
03:37in this application.
03:38Have a look at the rear as well.
03:40It pops out there.
03:41So if you look at the front,
03:42it basically comes down
03:44and then it just pops out at the rear.
03:46It's got a really nice stance
03:47at the back there.
03:48It's partly to fit the engine
03:49but also partly
03:50to give you the handling
03:51that you need
03:52for a vehicle
03:53with this much power and torque.
03:54Now around the back,
03:55you've got a really cool design as well.
03:56Look at that.
03:57I can see the tyres
03:58through this bit of aero here.
04:00You've got full LED taillights,
04:02Lotus writing on the back here
04:04and then this glass cover
04:06over the engine.
04:08So really,
04:09it's just work of art there
04:10with dual exhaust pipes as well
04:12and a reverse light nestled
04:14all the way down the bottom here.

04:35Let's start off with the key.
04:37You have lock, unlock, boot.
04:40On the side,
04:41it says for the drivers
04:42and then on the back,
04:43you've got a Lotus logo.
04:45It's a proximity sensing key.
04:47And have a look at this.
04:48You've got like a
04:49fighter jet style lid here
04:51to then start the engine
04:52which I reckon is pretty cool.
04:54This interior is pretty cool as well
04:56because again,
04:57I just sort of throw myself back
04:59to the Lotuses of yesteryear
05:01and we actually used to own one
05:03at CarAdvice,
05:04our old business.
05:05And look,
05:06I did enjoy driving it occasionally
05:07but every time you had to drive it
05:08and it wasn't to
05:09or at a racetrack,
05:11it was just something
05:12you enjoyed getting out of.
05:14It was highly unreliable.
05:15Everything broke on it
05:16and it just wasn't very nice.
05:18So this,
05:19on the other hand,
05:20if you look at this interior,
05:21this being the touring spec
05:22of this car,
05:23the one that's set up
05:24for daily driving,
05:25this is an interior
05:26where I feel
05:27I could actually
05:28daily drive this car.
05:29It's got some really nice
05:30materials around the place.
05:32You've got tech
05:33in the center there.
05:34It's all sort of
05:35nicely presented.
05:36So,
05:37what about your touch points?
05:38So, nice and,
05:39well, it's firm but soft there
05:40and then nice on the door
05:41there as well.
05:42How soft is it?
05:43We've got our durometer.
05:44We've tested the main surfaces

06:14So, you have a 10.25-inch display.
06:17Look, it's nothing special
06:19but it's certainly better
06:20than what Lotus used
06:21to have previously.
06:22Sort of central to the display
06:24are a few performance options
06:25so you can see your tyre pressure.
06:26You've got a performance setting
06:28here for downforce.
06:29I'll be curious to see
06:30what that looks like
06:31when we're driving.
06:32You've got a G-meter,
06:33power, torque and boost
06:34there as well.
06:35Then you've also got
06:36a lap timer just over here
06:38as well which could be
06:40a cool feature.
06:41Previous records.

06:43I like this.
06:44Max speed as well.
06:45Very cool.
06:46And then in addition to that
06:47you've also got this display here
06:48that you can swivel between
06:50to give you your sort of
06:52commonly used items
06:53which I think is
06:54a pretty cool setup.
06:55You also have Apple CarPlay
06:57and Android Auto.
06:58Look at that.
06:59Wireless Apple CarPlay.
07:00It all works pretty well.
07:02It's not super quick
07:03but it is fine for what it is.
07:06On the audio front
07:07you have a 12-speaker
07:08KEF-branded sound system.
07:09Now KEF may be a brand
07:11that you've never heard of
07:12but I used to have
07:13a set of KEF speakers
07:14and they are
07:15absolutely incredible
07:16and it's a really good setup
07:17they have here
07:18in such a small cabin
07:19to fit that many speakers.
07:21It is a pretty good
07:22sort of sound experience.
07:23You've got AM, FM and DAB
07:25digital radio too
07:26so you're fully covered there
07:27in terms of all of those features.
07:28Ahead of the driver
07:29you've got a 12.3-inch display.
07:31This has a certain degree
07:32of customization
07:33but nothing sort of too crazy
07:34and it gives you just
07:35everything you need to see
07:36there ahead of the driver.
07:37One of the things I did notice
07:38sort of driving this around
07:40I like the fact that
07:41it has front and rear
07:42parking sensors
07:43it makes it easy to park up
07:44against curbs and stuff.
07:45So I'll show you what
07:46the rear view camera looks like
07:47I'm just going to start the car.
07:50So there it is there.
07:51It's interesting
07:52the quality is
07:53like it's not amazing
07:55but it's actually not too bad
07:56you know for a vehicle like this
07:58you see some production cars
07:59that have terrible cameras
08:00and this is actually
08:01sort of half decent
08:02I can quite clearly see
08:03what's going on
08:04at the back there
08:05so I'm a fan of that
08:06and this is what the horn
08:07looks like.
08:09In terms of your connectivity
08:10so you don't have any
08:11wireless phone charging
08:12but you do have
08:13a USB-A port
08:14down the bottom here.
08:15In the center console
08:17you've got a USB-C
08:18and a USB-A port
08:19and then all the way
08:20at the back here
08:21you've got a 12V outlet
08:22as well.
08:23A couple of cup holders
08:24some storage down here
08:25as well.
08:26Storage in the door too
08:27so really is
08:28nothing like an old Lotus
08:29there in terms of
08:30how much storage
08:31you have available to you.
08:32They've even got a
08:33pretty reasonably sized
08:34glove box as well.
08:36Now on your
08:37comfort front
08:38you've got
08:39a single zone
08:40automatic climate control
08:41and I love the fact
08:42that you have
08:43a little symbol
08:44of a driver
08:45with a helmet on
08:46for the climate controls
08:47I think that's pretty cool.
08:48In terms of seating
08:49have a look at these
08:50they just look
08:51really nice and cool
08:52you've got a ribbed
08:53section there
08:54Lotus there as well
08:55they're super comfy
08:56to sit in for
08:57longer distance driving
08:58only sort of criticism
08:59with them is
09:00they're not perforated
09:01so you can get
09:02a bit hot and sweaty
09:03inside the car
09:04and the backrest
09:05can go forwards
09:06and backwards
09:07you can lift the front
09:08of the seat
09:09the back of the seat
09:10you have lumbar adjustment
09:11and then memory
09:12for the driver as well.
09:13In terms of steering adjustment
09:14you have both tilt
09:15and reach adjustment
09:16and then
09:17let's do a little
09:18reach test here
09:19yeah all of that
09:20stuff is easy to reach
09:21while you're driving.
09:22Now let's talk
09:23cargo capacity
09:24so I'm going to
09:25crack this open
09:26pretty surprising actually
09:27you've got
09:28just over 200 litres
09:29of cargo capacity
09:30and I've jammed
09:31a carry on
09:32suitcase
09:33and it has a sort
09:34of divot there
09:35behind the latch
09:36so you can
09:37actually fit
09:38a reasonable amount
09:39of bits and pieces
09:40in there
09:41so I think that is
09:42definitely a good thing.
09:43Ok we've just
09:44hit the road
09:45in the Amira
09:46kind of reminds me
09:47of Camira
09:48but definitely
09:49very different to that.
09:50The first thing
09:51I noticed
09:52before I even
09:53start talking about
09:54the engine
09:55is the steering
09:56so Lotus has gone
09:57down the path
09:58of using a
09:59hydraulic steering rack
10:00pretty much
10:01every new car
10:02there are some
10:03off-roaders out there
10:04that still have
10:05hydraulic steering racks
10:06most will use
10:07an EPAS system
10:08which is an
10:09electrically assisted
10:10steering rack
10:11so traditionally
10:12hydraulic steering racks
10:13gave you the most feel
10:14and it was just
10:15the way to do
10:16a sports car
10:17then Porsche
10:18adopted an EPAS
10:19system in the 911
10:20they did a good job
10:21with it
10:22everyone was happy
10:23so yeah
10:24it's interesting
10:25so it's got a bit
10:26of weight to it
10:27and that is one
10:28of the side effects
10:29of a hydraulic system
10:30now this being
10:31a bit shit
10:32to be honest
10:33a bit rough
10:34and just not very nice
10:35this is actually
10:36fantastic
10:37like it is
10:38the perfect balance
10:39there between comfort
10:40and sportiness
10:41I know I'm
10:42driving a sports car
10:43but it's comfortable
10:44enough for me
10:45to be able to
10:46drive to work each day
10:47and it has Porsche

10:54it's a comfortable
10:55car and you know
10:56that when you

18:28c'est assez agressif en termes de l'attraction.

18:34c'est en fait de le mettre en mode ESC.

20:22Et je pense qu'ils ont réussi
20:24à avoir un bon équilibre
20:26entre ce qui donne le boost
20:28et ce qui donne la durabilité.
20:30Je pense qu'avec un moteur
20:32qui va beaucoup plus vite,
20:34ça va peut-être être un peu léger.
20:36Mais pour moi, ça me sent
20:38beaucoup plus composé
20:40que l'ancienne Elise.
20:42Si tu as perdu de la traction
20:44dans l'ancienne Elise,
20:46tu étais en route très vite.
20:48Celle-ci, j'ai l'impression
20:50que tout le monde peut la conduire
20:52même en mode de route
20:54ou même avec la stabilité
20:56en conditions de contrôle
20:58Je ne m'attendais pas à aimer
