00:00News overseas, even before it made landfall, Hurricane Milton spawned some two dozen tornadoes
00:06that crisscrossed the Sunshine State and left many dead and communities utterly ravaged
00:11and ruined well before Milton hit the cities of Tampa, Sarasota, St. Petersburg, among
00:17others.
00:18And Milton's strong winds ripped off a huge part of the roofing of Tropicana Stadium in
00:23St. Petersburg, which is home to the Tampa Bay Devils for a Major League Baseball team.
00:28WUAS Richard Green tells us more.
00:34Milton made landfall Wednesday night along Florida's west coast near the city of Sarasota,
00:39carrying maximum sustained winds of 205 kilometers an hour.
00:44The winds ripped the fabric that covers the roof of Tropicana Stadium, the home of Major
00:48League Baseball's Tampa Bay Rays franchise.
00:51The hurricane's strong winds and heavy rains triggered high levels of water that flowed
00:56from the Gulf Coast into low-lying areas of the cities of Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota
01:02and Fort Myers.
01:04Milton also spawned at least two dozen tornadoes that crisscrossed the state well before the
01:09hurricane made landfall.
01:11Authorities say several people were killed by the tornadoes, including one that struck
01:15an upscale community near the city of Fort Pierce.
01:19More than 100 homes were destroyed, including that of Fort Myers resident, Conor Farrin.
01:25And then like this, all this, this happened like instantaneously.
01:28Like these windows blew out, I was about probably right here when it happened.
01:35My cat over there on the desk, I grabbed the two dogs and like run under my bed, but that
01:40was it.
01:41Probably, probably one minute total, probably less.
01:49Authorities say at least two million residents were left without electricity.
01:54The National Hurricane Center downgraded Milton to a Category 1 storm early Thursday
01:58morning as it made its way across central Florida.
02:02Forecasters warned of devastating rains and damaging winds throughout the day before the
02:07storm exits into the Atlantic Ocean.
02:09Richard Green, VOA News.
