00:00I was interested in the way he described what he would do when it comes to scheme game plan
00:08for Drake May on on Sunday and you agree?
00:11Yeah, I like to shrink the playbook for him.
00:13Do things that he you know he does well put him on the move when you want to take a shot
00:18I would go like you know I know Shyam's gonna love this jump into the world of max protection
00:23off play action maybe it becomes a one or two man route max where you have plenty of
00:28guys that can protect and if that shot's not there based on you know based on the
00:33coverage then maybe just use your athletic ability and get out of there.
00:37Or add in a nice wiggy classic tight end leak route you're good to go.
00:41The O-ish screen.
00:42What do you think what do you think the balance ends up being Sunday between run plays and
00:47others?
00:48I think you're probably I would probably say 55% run you know 45% pass you don't want to
00:55keep it simple for him especially in the first game against a good defense that you
01:00know Will Anderson Jr. can get after the quarterback.
01:03But also that game game script could easily change if you get down seven nothing ten nothing
01:08early.
01:09And I like empty too.
01:10I like empty for a young quarterback.
01:12Put him in empty have short routes make him get the ball out of his hand quickly for sprinkle
01:18a little bit of motion in there so it determines for him whether or not they're playing man
01:22or zone so he can have a good pre-snap read and then he's able to get the ball out quickly
01:27and if you know they're in a zone and things happen you know they happen to jump routes
01:31when you're in empty it's an obviously a good time for a quarterback to get up out of there
01:35and use his athletic ability.
01:37You and Bill O'Brien love to throw the game script out there Shyam.
01:41Yeah I mean we're we're simpatico Greg we're on the same page.
01:44I'm on Shyam Island.
01:46I think Shyam there's a real possibility that he would send you on the road to do some scouting.
01:50I would I would be yeah yeah I would be over the moon.
01:54That is a that is a segment for the show.
01:57We get Shyam video of him on the road scouting taking notes.
02:02He becomes like the Michigan stopwatch out.
02:05He's a big bone Connor Stallion.
02:07Yes yes.
02:08Like lock me in.
02:10There you go.
02:11Send me to Louisville.
02:12I'll go.
02:13I'll go scout.
02:14But do you have faith that when you heard Bill O'Brien talk about all of those things
02:18you just talked about.
02:19Yeah.
02:20Faith that Alex Van Pelt can and is going to do that.
02:25Well I think he can.
02:27I mean it's not that difficult like if you're an offensive coordinator and the other thing
02:31that you would do is like if there was something he did good on scout team maybe a specific
02:37play concept that you said oh he really did good and like because he talked about how
02:41other offenses were pretty cool.
02:44You we all know it's a copycat cat league.
02:47Take some of those things and maybe incorporate it into your offense.
02:50I'm also curious too because AVP said early in the season it might have been right after
02:54week one that he wasn't able to use his whole playbook.
02:57I'm curious if that's because a portion of his playbook was specifically designed for
03:01a quarterback that has a skill set like Drake May and you just can't use that with Jacoby
03:05percent because over four weeks we haven't seen the playbook evolve all that much.
03:08So I'm kind of curious where that portion of the playbook he was referencing even is
03:12that's probably the RPO play portion of the playbook.
03:15The element of giving your running game an extra an extra running back in the sense
03:24where your quarterback's a good athlete.
03:25Think about the touchdown that he scored in the preseason came off of an RPO where he
03:30made it seem like all right I could give it to the running back.
03:32He keeps it.
03:33Boom.
03:34Jayden Daniels scored a touchdown like that in the game last week I believe or a couple
03:39of weeks when you have that type of quarterback especially inside the 10 yard line and you
03:44can run RPO with him is a lot of things that you could do.
03:47So maybe that's the portion of what I'll ask those that are listening this as well.
03:53But what what's your what's what's a good showing by Drake May on Sunday.
04:01What what what meets your expectation.
04:03Shyme you be he was number one in your mocks.
04:07Yeah from time to time.
04:08No throughout the entire the entire time not time to time the entire time.
04:12Sometimes you change your marks after the draft.
04:14You were a J.J. McCarthy guy for a hot second.
04:16Yeah no Drake May has has always been and it will always be my number one quarterback
04:20from that.
04:21So what's a reasonable expectation of success for him on Sunday.
04:27Do they have to win the football game.
04:29No I don't think you have to win the football game.
04:30I think you have to.
04:31Your offense has to be competitive right.
04:33You have to be clearly taking a step up from what you've been the first five weeks of the
04:38season.
04:39You have to look at least more cohesive at least more explosive than that.
04:43If you want like number parameters I don't know I would say one seventy five plus and
04:48at least a touchdown throw like that to me and you can't turn over the ball over and
04:52over again.
04:53Yeah.
04:54You can't have like three interceptions right.
04:55Like if he throws a pick I don't.
04:57That's fine.
04:58I'm not I'm not scared of him throwing interceptions.
05:01Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes lead the league in interceptions over the last like two years.
05:05But they're the best quarterbacks of football because they throw so much.
05:07Ian Jerry in the Twitch chat says one touchdown one pick two hundred yards.
05:12See I don't even need.
05:13You just can't have that Zach Wilson three interceptions like where the hell is he throwing
05:19the ball.
05:20He just like you can't have that.
05:21I don't know.
05:22Zach Wilson quickly.
05:23Did you see the stat out there that through the first four games Aaron Rodgers and Zach
05:27Wilson scored the same number of points.
05:30Correct.
05:31Right.
05:32I had the same amount of touch interceptions I think.
05:33Yep.
05:34Right.
05:35I don't like the yardage numbers or you know I just want to see where you can go and we've
05:41seen these games.
05:42We've seen him with Zach Wilson.
05:43We've seen him with Matt Jones where you go.
05:46Oh he looks like he's got potential.
05:50That's I think what I'll be looking for in this game where it's like this kid looks like
05:54he has some potential and take that.
05:57I think that's going to be the biggest takeaway for me versus where if this you go out there
06:02and he just looks like a Darren headlights 6 0 3 text from my beloved New Hampshire people.
06:08I can't wait for this offense to look worse with Drake May and to hear how Shyam explains
06:14it away on Monday morning.
06:15Well he will have that opportunity to do that on a page.
06:17Yeah.
06:18I won't explain anything away.
06:19I don't need to worse.
06:20It physically cannot look worse.
06:22You're the only quarterback in all the football that is worse than Jacoby Brissett is Deshaun
06:27Watson.
06:28That's it.
06:29It's the only one like the only way Drake May looks awful is if he's out there.
06:33Will Levis things like throwing the ball like just handing the ball to the other team which
06:36isn't going to happen.
06:38He's getting ready to get sad.
06:40I don't want to.
06:41You don't want the falling over in the end zone avoiding the safety by throwing a pick
06:47six.
06:48You don't want that.
06:49No I don't like that.
06:50I don't want to surrender Cobra after he just threw a pick and the guys take it to the house
06:53like and it's crazy to me that people just like assume you make one mistake and you're
06:57just immediately a bad quarterback like did anybody see Jordan Love this weekend make
07:01and like a Carson Wentz decision to throw trying to throw it away and he throws it to
07:04the corner and it's a pick six like quarterbacks make mistakes sometimes it's just do you learn
07:09from them and do you continue to make them is the question.
07:12It's a lot of fun to not be the guy that's oddly obsessed and in love with the Patriots
07:16quarterback like it's amazing seeing Shime and how energized this has made him.
07:22I Curtis I feel like an entirely new human being like going through the Mac Jones era
07:27post Tom Brady and getting here has been like an insane roller coaster.
07:32I do.
07:33I do worry about Van Pelt just being a total PUD.
07:36Well that's the problem.
07:38I get that.
07:39I mean that I don't know that he's the guy.
07:44I mean I wish we could send Van Pelt to the Pepper Palace get some exotic flavors in the
07:48offense like even if Van Pelt's not the guy you're still going to see moments where Drake
07:52May is awesome like he will he is he will be he can be so good that he can overcome
07:58the play calling to a point like it's never going to be to the point where he's going
08:01to take you to a Super Bowl like but he's going to be able to overcome bad play calling
08:05at times.
08:06Look for the moments.
08:07I think that's a great a good word that Shime uses.
08:10Look for the moments in the Drake May performance that you can walk away and go OK.
08:16He does have that potential to be really good.
08:22And then if Alex Van Pelt isn't the guy now you just got to hope the next guy that they
08:27get is the one because you don't want him to have like a Baker Mayfield situation where
08:31it's like three different offensive coordinators in his first three years as a quarterback.
08:35All right.
08:36Well Drake May gets his first NFL start on Sunday.
