00:00:00the Australian team they've made five changes in their forward pack but they've
00:00:04retained John Eales at number eight that was a controversial selection for their
00:00:07game against Argentina two changes in the backs with Herbert and Flett coming
00:00:12in in the three-quarter line and we look at the Western Samoan team they
00:00:20initially made two changes standing down Timo Tangaloa from Wellington and
00:00:25replacing him with number 11 Tupou Amasino and junior Paramore coming in
00:00:30for Sila Vaifale but the toe of Pat Lamb has not recovered in time so Pat Lamb is
00:00:36also out replaced by Danny Kaliopa who's one of the Auckland based members of
00:00:42this Western Samoan team his second appearance today for referee Ed Morrison
00:00:47and he's going to get this game underway
00:00:52Rugby World Cup in Pontypool Marty Roebuck kicks off for Australia on a
00:00:57wet day against Western Samoa and the first mistake of the game is made by
00:01:01Australia with the kick not going 10 meters we'd like to say hello to our
00:01:05many viewers throughout the world on our familiar international network here at
00:01:09television New Zealand sports one world of sport bringing it to you but we'd
00:01:13like to say a special hello to the people at Apia Park in Western Samoa
00:01:1715,000 people out of a population of 40,000 in the town have gathered at Apia
00:01:23Park in the middle of the night again and they're watching the big screens and
00:01:27no doubt highly excited by the chances of Western Samoa here against Australia
00:01:31in many respects Earl Curtin this is the biggest test yet for Western Samoan
00:01:35rugby yes it is and I think they have made probably a big mistake and not
00:01:40spelling a lot of these players and conceding the game almost to Australia
00:01:44and leaving it therefore to give them a rest before they play this game the
00:01:53big one I think for them against Argentina because if they win that they
00:01:57would basically go into the quarterfinals yes it was apparent in the
00:02:01game in Cardiff though it was a great day for Western Samoa some of their
00:02:04players especially in the front row were getting a bit tired towards the end they
00:02:07could have done with the rest perhaps but maybe it's not on a Samoan nature to
00:02:11not accept the challenge and certainly they go into the game with Australia
00:02:17today hoping no doubt they can continue the form that led to one of the big
00:02:21upsets in world rugby when they tipped over Wales on Cardiff Arms Park just
00:02:26three days ago here's the power of the Australian forward back Jeff Miller is
00:02:31in there the goal line is behind
00:02:37and that's good early work by the Australian pack it's a penalty for
00:02:45Australia every referee Ed Morrison from England has signaled that Western
00:02:49Samoa bought that ball down onto the ground which is against the laws of the
00:02:54game and it'll be an early penalty shot at goal for Australia well this is the
00:02:58problem Western Samoa will have today is the scrummaging they'll find it very
00:03:02difficult to hold their own in the scrum time against Australia it was surprising
00:03:09against Wales they scrum particularly well
00:03:20well it's a soft field so I guess what you could say that neither these sides
00:03:25will be completely at home in the conditions with the rain falling but then
00:03:31there was the big wet in Australia a couple of years ago but this year they
00:03:34had a marvelous season of winter weather in Sydney and Brisbane and there was
00:03:39periods of three I think three months where there was no rain in Brisbane so
00:03:43Michael Lyon is very used to playing on hard ground conditions he's the world
00:03:47highest cap points scorer with 625 points way ahead of the next man and
00:03:54that's the kind of form that's made him the world's biggest test point scorer
00:03:58Australia into the early lead after three minutes against Western Samoa they
00:04:03lead by three to nil which he's obviously been practicing a lot with
00:04:06those balls Keith
00:04:15again just stroking that ball over
00:04:20Western Samoans are not not playing with the same fire in those first couple of
00:04:29minutes that they showed against Wales they were really humming against Wales
00:04:33they're almost as if psychologically that they've conceded this game so Andy
00:04:43Di Lupo is going to kick out Mark Birdwhistle is up there now here's where
00:04:49Samoa will try and get into the game but the big Aussie pack has got position
00:04:53again so so far no position for Western Samoa here number nine is Matthew
00:04:59Byer number four is Mark Birdwhistle
00:05:02oh
00:05:12having a look at the Australian front row there you can see Dan Crowley near
00:05:15us and then Phil Kearns and on the far side Cameron Lillicrap comes back to
00:05:19test rugby today Nick Firejones what a marvelous career he's forged himself and
00:05:28this is his 50th test match today I Lupo is under the ball back with fire
00:05:37Jones again kick or scrum for Australia and they're taking the scrum up field
00:05:49well Western Samoa have the bigger pack by some 32 kilograms in total weight
00:06:04eels fire Jones watched by via Michael liner the touch judge has got his flag
00:06:14out for rough play and there must have been a late tackle there we didn't see
00:06:18it back to Nick Firejones at halfway well he had his flag out there he's put
00:06:25it down again number eight is Danny Kelly over fire
00:06:30Jones off to Brendan Nasser just inside the 22-meter line
00:06:48so obviously nothing from the touch judge there he may have been just making
00:06:52a signal to assist the referee this is to his see who was ahead of the kick
00:07:00playing the ball after the tackle penalty to Western Samoa
00:07:11they still lost the advantage Western Samoa there once the Australians or once
00:07:16the opposition come past the tunnel as they say they're obviously in business
00:07:22meaning that it makes it a lot easier for them to drive into rucks and balls
00:07:25you must stop players before they reach a tunnel of the scrum Western Samoa are
00:07:30failing to do that because there's so much pressure on them at scrum time
00:07:34touch judge right in front of us is Fred Howard the man at the front of the
00:07:39line-up for Samoa is Billy Alanator via away to Basham it's a slippery ball
00:07:48today but Amasino is with Basham or lovely run by Stephen Basham camp easy
00:07:55and in goes the first of the big tackles today from number six junior paramour to
00:08:01over Inga Marty Roebuck will have to kick to touch
00:08:11it's not enough chases from Samoa they once that ball went in the air and
00:08:15you're going for distance they had to put more pressure on Roebuck than they
00:08:18did there it made it very easy for him the slippery ground just to give a wee
00:08:23bit of a step and then get his kick away to touch as you saw
00:08:31so the man making the throw is Stan Tu'umalatai down to a nice tap
00:08:39Peter Paddy-Loper coming off Apollo Perolini's tap
00:09:01there's the score after nine minutes of play in the first half the umbrellas are
00:09:24out at Pontypool Park just to check here that you see number eight for Western
00:09:28Samoa that's in fact Apollo Perolini so Danny Caglioppo and Apollo Perolini
00:09:34have come out in different numbers from those that published and different
00:09:39numbers from then shown to you before the kickoff today quick tap taken by
00:09:47Australia for a hard rush and straight into Danny Caglioppo
00:09:53so there's Danny Caglioppo who's the open side flanker and Apollo Perolini is
00:10:01playing in the back
00:10:11here's Eales away to Far Jones trying to find the other flanker Bunce is number
00:10:1512 at halfway
00:10:24a bit of a tussle here and it's an Australian ball ill curtain you didn't
00:10:30like the look of that one but Nick Far Jones not very happy underneath there
00:10:37Nick Far Jones holding his knee now this could be a sensation for Australia he's
00:10:41an enormous pain his 50th cap today and the Australian captain is in a lot of
00:10:46bother now this could be a real problem for Australia Greg Craig the little
00:10:53physio is on the field but through the referee's microphone we can hear cries
00:10:58of anguish from Nick Far Jones
00:11:03and you can see players have come forward there to assist him his old
00:11:07touring buddies Campisi and Leiner are across and there's grim looks on the
00:11:11faces of the Australian team
00:11:19there's Peter Slattery who's going to come into the ball game well that could
00:11:26be a real disaster for Australia this could be a strong effect on their World
00:11:31Cup chances remember Nick Far Jones had a disastrous time of injury in 1987 in
00:11:36the World Cup and he is in very bad shape and this could have an effect on
00:11:42the outcome of the Rugby World Cup let's look at it I think was Nick Far Jones
00:11:45with the ball here yes you see his head up there so let's see if we can see what
00:11:49makes that injury to him as he's all right there and down he goes and yes you
00:11:53can see the knee being twisted underneath and the weight of some other
00:11:58players and he hobbles to the sideline of the game his knee got twisted and
00:12:04then the weight of the other players collapsing on him you could see him
00:12:06starting to grimace as he went down sad for it could only be two weeks
00:12:12even though they often feel so very sore at a time and often two weeks will clear
00:12:16it up let's hope for the sake of a great rugby player and Australia that is so
00:12:22so Peter Slattery comes into the game enormous responsibility comes on to him
00:12:27now but he's a most able replacement he's had a number of appearances in
00:12:30chess rugby yes he sure is he's a fine scrum half to so Slattery gets the
00:12:35first touch of the ball in a way to Nick Far Jones I'm sorry to Michael Liner
00:12:39Nick Far Jones is well gone isn't he Aya Lupo is back
00:12:46well I wonder how the injury to Nick Far Jones will affect the mood of the
00:12:51Australian players in this game I should imagine they might be feeling sick inside
00:12:55some of them having lost their captain and what looks like a serious knee
00:12:59injury so that is very sad for Australia but it's it could be a
00:13:04sensation as far as the Rugby World Cup is concerned because Nick Far Jones is
00:13:10one of the major players in the team that has favoured to win the cup
00:13:13competition well yes he's just the finest halfback in the world that's all
00:13:18there is to it he's a he's a he's a marvelous player and a grand man great
00:13:23ambassador to for Australia and a fine captain to beat but the world goes on
00:13:30Peter Slattery is on the field and here is Stan Tuamalatai to throw we've had
00:13:36running time about 14 minutes in this game and look at the back of this guy's
00:13:41neck girl Stan Tuamalatai well that's where you hookers go these days they're
00:13:45actually converted props you find the best of them and Stan is no mean prop
00:13:49either good tap by Keenan, Campisi, Tupou Paamacino is through on him
00:14:13well a penalty awarded there I'm not sure what that's all about but Peter
00:14:16Padialopa is a confident enough to call up Ayalupo for the shot at goal
00:14:28they want some sand you see underneath the shirts there they're wearing a lot
00:14:32of these vests to protect themselves from the cold weather and it's going to
00:14:41take some time to get sand to Ayalupo well for all you people listening
00:14:46particularly in Samoa at the stadium and up here there's a tremendous write-up
00:14:52about the your team winning against Wales and there was one great article in
00:14:56the great sporting paper in London the Daily Telegraph this morning where so
00:15:01many people have wondered where Western Samoa was so here in the the heart of
00:15:06the rugby news was a picture of the Pacific and a large blown-up map
00:15:13of Samoa sitting in the middle of it so you've probably done more with your
00:15:16rugby team for the PR work for Samoa than all those ambassadors
00:15:24and whatnot you've sent to London over the last 20 or 30 years so here's a
00:15:29chance for Ayalupo to make a little bit of glory for himself it's a long way out
00:15:33it's a heavy ball it's a hard kick
00:15:38pretty good effort Tampizi with the ball
00:15:43this is junior paramour he's a lovely runner now he's a lovely runner
00:15:48supporters of New Zealand provincial runner run rugby will tell you that
00:15:51because he's playing there in the Manurewa club in South Auckland the
00:15:57champion club of counties province he's a good sevens player he's a very quick
00:16:01man for a big man good ball player
00:16:04Halalotoi in the front row he's marking Cameron Lillicraft there
00:16:07good jump for Steve Cutler who makes a return to test rugby today this is his
00:16:1240th test match for Cutler Miller back to Slatter the replacement for
00:16:17Farr Jones, Liner
00:16:21well that marvellous record that Michael Liner and Nick Farr Jones have forged as
00:16:26partners at scrum half and standoff it's another addition today because they took
00:16:32the field together but such a shame for Australia that they've lost their captain
00:16:36in what looks like serious knee problems we'll have to have an update for you on
00:16:41that and Peter Slattery on the field
00:16:46Keenan got a lovely jump off the last throw by Samoa that's him there
00:16:55Mata'afa Keenan, he's pretty slippery and muddy
00:17:06the tackle was Mata'afa Keenan, he's had some pretty good rugby since he's come
00:17:12across to the Rugby World Cup it was a late addition to the Western Samoan
00:17:15team so it's Coker, Cutler and Eales three very tall fellows against some
00:17:22shorter and stockier Samoans but the Samoans have the throne they get the
00:17:25deflection, Bayer, Bashop, Peter Fats in midfield
00:17:31Matthew Bayer, away to Bashop again, with a deep kick behind Robak, a good one
00:17:38that's a lovely kick, well done Bashop
00:17:42but as you can see the Samoans are having to go to shorten lineups to try
00:17:47and get more ball at lineout time and again they're using their brains and
00:17:51they're trying to get the ball into the scrum very quickly in fact almost too
00:17:54quickly and they got penalized about five minutes ago, big lineout for them
00:17:59though to keep the pressure on Australia, Bill Kearns hobbled off in the previous
00:18:04game against Argentina but he's back in action today no doubt the Aussies will
00:18:08be hoping the same happens for Nick Bar-Jones
00:18:15so they're offside, they weren't binding into that maul and a chance for a liner
00:18:21to clear
00:18:27as Keith mentioned earlier on Eales who's normally a lock and a very good
00:18:32lock at the age of 20, 21 too, has been drilled to play at number eight he had
00:18:38one game there last week against Argentina and he wasn't particularly
00:18:42successful but Dwyer said that it was far too early after one experimentation
00:18:47to not have given another chance there but he doesn't look awfully effective
00:18:50even today, looks too big to be a great number eight, Stan Tutomolatai throws
00:18:55it's over the back, Danny Kaliopa gets to it first
00:19:02so coming up towards the end of the first quarter and another Australian
00:19:06down
00:19:18this is Jeff Miller who's down, that's a hamstring tweak, no it's Dan Crowley the
00:19:23big policeman
00:19:25tonight on The Bill, an officer in turmoil
00:19:36you may have been a hero
00:19:38a penalty to Australia for attempting to take it down near halfway
00:19:45what does it matter, you can take it down and the ball's coming up to Australia anyhow to any great extent
00:19:52good mark there, well taken by Stephen Bashop
00:20:00Bashop plays it to himself, now the Samoans showing some enterprise here
00:20:05now this is skiddy pitch, Campisi might not want to run too hard, close to the big hit man that Samoa have
00:20:13John Flett touches for the first time, he's knocked away the referee's seat
00:20:17the penalty will happen, it was a late tackle, kick or kick
00:20:24you can take it from wherever the best advantage position is, either where the late charge came from or where the ball bounced
00:20:32yes that was fair enough in that situation, he was probably a wee bit late
00:20:36but some of the frustration crept in because the Australians had a perfective ring
00:20:40and definitely shepherded Campisi as he did a dance behind them
00:20:44should have been a penalty way back on halfway down there to Western Samoa
00:20:52Junior Parramore, a very fast flanker
00:20:59actually I didn't think Campisi looked too keen to run there, no doubt he's been watching his television
00:21:03he would have seen Apollo Perolini, he knows about Junior Parramore and Danny Calliope by reputation
00:21:09I don't think any of those Australians are too keen to run yet
00:21:12they want to roll moorlops as they don't really get into too many of the big hits
00:21:15and sort of dampen the fervour of the Western Samoans
00:21:19what a great tribute that is to the way they played the other day
00:21:24some of that tackling by Apollo Perolini and Sheila Vaifale has been recognised throughout the sports writers
00:21:32and commentators who are all here at the Rugby World Cup as some of the hardest hits they've ever seen
00:21:38and there's been some reporters reporting the game for an awful long time
00:21:4322 minutes gone, Michael Liner kicking for goal again
00:21:51well there's a lucky break for the Western Samoans, it's across the front
00:21:54Liner disappointed, no change to the score, he has the only scoring
00:21:58after three minutes he landed a penalty goal, it's Australia leading by 3-0
00:22:02the captain Nick Far Jones is off the field and has been replaced by Peter Slattery
00:22:16a good one for his forwards to get under and compete for
00:22:19and Parramore has got it for the Blues
00:22:24Peter Fadielopa
00:22:26a bit of a little fumble in there, the referee says play on
00:22:29Bayer to Bashop
00:22:32I think they feel that Campisi doesn't want to be near the tacklers
00:22:36now can they get Campisi?
00:22:39Vahenga got him in the end
00:22:46good covering play by Stephen Bashop
00:22:49in pass to Matthew Bayer
00:22:51halfway line, a high ball
00:22:53halfway line, a high ball
00:22:55back again on Campisi's side, I don't think he wants to know
00:22:58and two big hitters on him, Matthew Bayer and Tupou Amasino
00:23:02it's not a bad tactic for Australia to put pressure on the great Campo
00:23:09well those are good kicks by Samar
00:23:11I do feel though now they're getting down here they want to be running it
00:23:15because they're not going, well they don't have that dominance at line out or scrum
00:23:19they've really got to keep it rolling
00:23:22the jumpers are Keenan and Burt Russell, they have the deflection
00:23:25Bayer, Millig made a good run
00:23:27Frank Bunce a tough inside centre, second 5.8, see the way he twisted
00:23:33his body and the referee stopped it there miles too soon
00:23:36miles too soon, I mean the stop start
00:23:40stop start rubbish really
00:23:42Frank Bunce, second 5.8
00:23:44on a wet day too, he should be encouraging the player to get some continuity
00:23:48because it's hard enough as it is when it's this bad
00:23:51the matchup's had a good game so far, again the kick over to Campisi's side
00:23:55I'm sure they're going to try Campisi on
00:23:57see how big his heart is on a day when Campisi would probably like just to get through
00:24:01and look for the big games later
00:24:04yes I think there'll be a few of them with that in mind
00:24:06but then again Dwyer obviously sensed that because he made seven changes
00:24:14Justin Samar having a good little patch here in the game
00:24:17they're down by 3-0, 24 minutes first half
00:24:20deflected by Cutler, too slattery
00:24:22Burt Whistle turns him over
00:24:29boy she's pretty sudden once you go down on the ground, that's it
00:24:33there's no chance to have a ruck or move over the player on the deck or anything else
00:24:37because they're just pinging, he's pinging it straight away as Ed Morrison
00:24:39Matthew Dwyer, number 9
00:24:42controlled by Apollo Perolini, the number 8
00:24:44Dwyer running wide, can he turn it in to find some of those
00:24:47the big men I'm calling the hitmen, the second and first flankers to the ball
00:24:53and today they're Junior Parramore and Perolini and Caglioppo
00:24:57Caglioppo
00:25:15kicked down the touchline
00:25:16Ayalupo from fullback, keeping the pressure on
00:25:19and down the same touchline
00:25:22good catch by Eales, jumping up like an Aussie footballer, Aussie rules player
00:25:25and the referee again, stopping it very quickly
00:25:28when the ball was loose and coming back on the Samoa side
00:25:31he's given Samoa the foot and Earl Curtin's looking a bit frustrated here
00:25:34even a little bit angry Earl
00:25:36I mean it's silly, absolutely silly
00:25:38I mean the ball's free and it's coming out
00:25:40I mean it's going to be no game at all
00:25:42we're just going to see nothing else but scrums and lineups
00:25:46John Eales is down and in pain
00:25:51so he's outside the touchline, the game will go on
00:25:55Greg Craig, the little physio
00:25:57Matthew Byer, another attacking scrum for Western Samoa
00:25:59they've warmed up a little now and are coming right
00:26:01Basham, he's going to put the high bomb up
00:26:03now Bunce might have been ahead
00:26:04but anyway Tuba Ingers coming through first on Campisi
00:26:07but Campisi didn't want to know
00:26:09Roebuck took it right on the goal line
00:26:17and the Western Samoa players are too keen
00:26:20and are offside
00:26:23this is referee Ed Morrison of England
00:26:26he's already controlled a game here
00:26:28he's controlled the Japan-Scotland game
00:26:30on the weekend
00:26:42both you Samoans and Cantabrians
00:26:44Steven Basham is playing superbly
00:26:47at first five eight or fly half as they call it over here
00:26:50he's having a grand game in these wet conditions
00:26:55up they go, nice work by Kelly Opa
00:26:57Keenan who's done well too
00:26:59number five Mata'apa Keenan
00:27:03there's the ball again available there
00:27:05I'm sorry New Zealand people watching this game
00:27:07would think that's a ruckable ball
00:27:11and the referee, he must have seen it
00:27:13and he stopped it and given it to the Blues for a scrum
00:27:16I think that's one of those other things that have been told
00:27:18the moment the ball goes down on the deck
00:27:20to stop it, to blow it up
00:27:23Wai is away to Basham
00:27:25the little pop kick this time
00:27:26Flett is coming forward
00:27:27Flett is caught by Basham
00:27:29he's having an excellent game
00:27:30Steven Basham
00:27:31that's the 22 metre line
00:27:34in goes Keenan
00:27:35and hits cut the heart with the shoulder
00:27:37there's a lot of big hits coming in again
00:27:39by Western Samoa
00:27:40as they warm up to the conditions
00:27:41the Samoans I'm sure back in Apia
00:27:43at Apia Park will be delighted
00:27:45at the way they've been going in the last ten minutes
00:27:47I used to be very proud
00:27:49and it doesn't matter what happens
00:27:50anyhow you've gone into sporting history
00:27:52back there in Samoa
00:27:53and great sporting history too
00:27:55having beaten Wales on that Sunday
00:27:57you've got no idea how many New Zealanders
00:27:59were yelling there for Samoa
00:28:01obviously sometimes unkindly referred to as New Zealand B
00:28:04playing a great game
00:28:06and putting herself in the record books
00:28:08Apollo Perolini
00:28:09the ball is there
00:28:10now let's let it come Mr Morrison
00:28:12Wai has it
00:28:13away sharply to Basham
00:28:14to Uba Enga
00:28:16straight out to Ailupo
00:28:18Ailupo's passed it to Horan
00:28:20and it goes across the touchline
00:28:22Samoa are just flexing
00:28:24their muscles and expanding
00:28:26a little in this game now
00:28:28and they're imposing their will on Australia
00:28:30those last ten minutes
00:28:31they weren't running with much purpose then though Keith
00:28:33they've got to have more pace on
00:28:34they were running at half pace
00:28:35and just shoveling the ball on
00:28:36they've got to really punch it man
00:28:40so Lily Crapp at the front
00:28:41behind him is Troy Coker
00:28:42then Crowley bending over
00:28:43but Keenan got the deflected
00:28:45and Alonato as well
00:28:46Bunce
00:28:48Bunce going hard at his opposite number
00:28:50but Horan's a good little tackler
00:28:52Waia clearing it nicely to Basham
00:28:54wide out
00:28:56to Brian Limar
00:28:57good fend
00:28:58Brian Limar the schoolboy
00:29:01out on the right wing number 14
00:29:04what a lovely fend that was
00:29:05look at them
00:29:06Samoa and team go here
00:29:09Burt Whistle
00:29:10ten metres out
00:29:11Waia
00:29:12Basham
00:29:15to Obaenga
00:29:16Tupou Fa'amassino
00:29:18and Campese scrambles it away
00:29:25the ball went forward
00:29:26in one of those tackles from Tupou Fa'amassino
00:29:29but look at the support the crowd is giving
00:29:31the Western Samoa team
00:29:34same old story
00:29:35it's the underdog
00:29:36and so they should
00:29:38there'll be a lot of New Zealanders there too
00:29:40they said they played so well on Sunday
00:29:42going back to watch them play this day at Pontypool
00:29:48because it was definitely one of the best games
00:29:51at the start of this World Cup tournament
00:29:55well Australia with their big reputation
00:29:57have come half an hour into the game
00:29:58and they haven't looked like scoring a try
00:30:01they've kicked one penalty goal
00:30:02and they lead by three to nil
00:30:06there's the line-out throw
00:30:07ten line-outs thrown in by Western Samoa
00:30:10nine for them cleanly
00:30:16now that was grabbing
00:30:18grabbing there
00:30:20well
00:30:21they pushed them before
00:30:22those line-outs
00:30:23a bit of a shambles always
00:30:25as to who pushes who first
00:30:28but Paramore is the player penalised
00:30:30according to Ed Morrison
00:30:34yes the shoving all around
00:30:35becomes a lottery as to who's going to get the penalty
00:30:41I think too the referees go in with preconceived ideas
00:30:44as to who should win
00:30:45and then they start worrying about it
00:30:47and they look at the scoreboard sometimes
00:30:48and see that heavens above
00:30:50the favoured side or the favourites aren't winning
00:30:52and therefore it's time
00:30:53maybe I'm not doing it right
00:30:55that is he thinks about himself
00:30:56or his own interpretations
00:30:58therefore he becomes a bit leeway
00:30:59you'll upset a few referees saying that
00:31:01that often happens
00:31:02referees go in with a preconceived notion
00:31:04as to who's going to win
00:31:05well perhaps they do
00:31:06yes I think they do
00:31:07slattery around the short side
00:31:10big thump by
00:31:12Fata Macino
00:31:14Campisi
00:31:19Apollo Perolini waits
00:31:23my word he's a good player
00:31:24that's Apollo Perolini
00:31:28he's played well
00:31:30he's so damaged up
00:31:31and I bet he's so sore
00:31:33he looks like a man out of
00:31:35Farewell to Arms
00:31:36Ernest Hemingway's book
00:31:39he's so damaged
00:31:44Bill Kearns to throw
00:31:46another look down the front of the Aussie line
00:31:49that one's deep and over the back
00:31:51Perolini
00:31:52Parramore
00:31:54Bashop seems to have a lot of time today
00:31:56that's outside the 22
00:31:57it'll have to bounce
00:31:58Campisi's claimed it
00:32:00and Campo
00:32:01not running
00:32:05that's still good ground though
00:32:06gained by Bashop
00:32:07and you add that up
00:32:08he conceded a bit
00:32:09and plus he's got the throw-in to the line-up
00:32:11and they're winning their throw-ins
00:32:12it's good football
00:32:13yeah they're winning their throw-ins
00:32:14to the line-out with
00:32:15Mata'afekinan too
00:32:17isn't he playing well
00:32:18he's made a big difference
00:32:19to their back-up
00:32:22he was playing well for Auckland
00:32:23before he came away
00:32:24and since he's joined
00:32:25this Western Samoan side
00:32:26he was excellent
00:32:27on Sunday against Wales
00:32:28and is proving to be good today too
00:32:30that's Mata'afekinan number 5
00:32:34Crowley has the ball again
00:32:36he doesn't seem to be bothered
00:32:37by that hamstring tweak
00:32:40from earlier in the game
00:32:41remember Nick Farr Jones
00:32:42off the field
00:32:43we hope to have a report on him
00:32:46maybe at half-time
00:32:47we'll check on the condition
00:32:48of Nick Farr Jones
00:32:52but look at that
00:32:53Stan Tutumolatai there
00:32:54he's got
00:32:55when we talked about his neck before
00:32:57it's actually a contradiction
00:32:58in terms really
00:32:59because he hasn't got one
00:33:00he just runs straight down
00:33:01off that ear
00:33:02straight down
00:33:03onto his shoulders
00:33:05beautiful build
00:33:06for a hooker
00:33:07in the front row man
00:33:10scrum
00:33:12slattery the replacement
00:33:13half-back
00:33:16good catch by
00:33:17Tupou Pa'amosino
00:33:21and well rolled by
00:33:22one of the Samoan
00:33:23left forwards
00:33:24Keleopa
00:33:25Bashop
00:33:26out to Tu'uwaenga
00:33:27this is a high kick
00:33:28for Brian Lima
00:33:29to chase
00:33:30it's skidding out
00:33:31towards the far touchline
00:33:35yes, it was a bad kick
00:33:36it came off the side of his foot
00:33:39I thought they'd have a go
00:33:40there and run
00:33:41Wa'eenga's quick
00:33:42and so is Lima
00:33:43on the wing
00:33:44and I think they should
00:33:45punch it wide
00:33:46and still keep the pressure
00:33:47on by moving it
00:33:48they've got to take
00:33:49more risks in Australia
00:33:50because they don't win
00:33:51as much line-out ball
00:33:52and they'll tend to make
00:33:53a few more mistakes
00:33:54in moving the ball wide
00:34:00John Eales
00:34:01looking like a
00:34:02praying mantis back there
00:34:03at the end of the line-out
00:34:05he's got the ball
00:34:07from Slattery
00:34:08this is Koka
00:34:09here's Troy Koka
00:34:10Slattery
00:34:11up to Lillicrap
00:34:12Lillicrap trying to
00:34:13weave his way through
00:34:14the busy traffic
00:34:16now they're spinning it wide
00:34:17Horan
00:34:18oh and nearly an intercept
00:34:19for Tupou Pa'amosino
00:34:21on a dry day
00:34:22he might have been away
00:34:23now this man
00:34:24is a real athlete
00:34:25take a look at the build
00:34:26of this guy
00:34:27he's got super hips
00:34:28and legs
00:34:29and he's got
00:34:30super hips and legs
00:34:32and Tupou Pa'amosino
00:34:33was nearly away there
00:34:36heavens if he hadn't
00:34:37have intercepted it
00:34:38they were away though too
00:34:39Australia were
00:34:40the way he was going in
00:34:41he was got sucked in
00:34:42and he had two men
00:34:43overlap on the outside
00:34:44going for the intercept
00:34:47Eales
00:34:48Slattery
00:34:49Ailupo coming forward
00:34:55well 35 minutes gone
00:34:56you'd expect
00:34:57the hot shot
00:34:58Australian team
00:34:59to have something
00:35:00more on the board
00:35:01according to the
00:35:02running form
00:35:03yes you certainly would
00:35:04but they're gradually
00:35:05putting it together
00:35:06and being a wet day
00:35:07and they'll just
00:35:08want to pace themselves
00:35:09they'll just
00:35:10try and play
00:35:11controlled stuff
00:35:12I think and roll
00:35:13more most of the day
00:35:14I don't think
00:35:15they're going to
00:35:16sprint up too wide
00:35:21just had a report
00:35:22handed to us
00:35:23from the
00:35:24attendants
00:35:25Nicola Jones
00:35:26apparently a knee
00:35:27problem and could
00:35:28not get out of
00:35:29the competition
00:35:30for up to 10 days
00:35:31yes that's normally
00:35:3214 days
00:35:33that's good news
00:35:34though that at least
00:35:35he's not out of
00:35:36the whole competition
00:35:37so that'll be
00:35:38some relief to
00:35:39our Australian
00:35:40fans who are
00:35:41watching today
00:35:42this is a fine
00:35:43Australian team
00:35:44they thrashed
00:35:45the Welsh by
00:35:4663 to 6
00:35:47thrashed the
00:35:48English by
00:35:4940 to 15
00:35:50this year
00:35:51beat the
00:35:52All Blacks
00:35:5321-12
00:35:54there's the
00:35:55big scrum
00:35:56shove but
00:35:57it's a
00:35:58clean
00:35:59play
00:36:00by
00:36:01the
00:36:02Bashop
00:36:03again
00:36:04on his
00:36:05wrong foot
00:36:06didn't
00:36:07worry
00:36:08just
00:36:09whipped it
00:36:10away
00:36:11to
00:36:12Umalatai
00:36:13and a
00:36:14hard case
00:36:15he is
00:36:16too
00:36:17he led
00:36:18the
00:36:19singing
00:36:20the other
00:36:21night
00:36:22in the
00:36:23dressing
00:36:24room
00:36:25after the
00:36:26that's anthony herbert and there was the big hit on anthony herbert by frank bunce
00:36:34mind you herbert's a pretty big chap himself he's a big lad himself
00:36:43talking about big lads a lot of the english press were absolutely in awe of john kirwin
00:36:49saying that you know 15 and a half stone what an incredibly difficult job it is for a winger
00:36:53marking him and to stop him
00:36:57aussies have got the rumble on here the scrum has turned right around
00:37:03and those uh players were disengaging from the scrum and referee morrison has given
00:37:07australia a simple penalty here right out in front of the post on the 22.
00:37:11well they had to disengage because the scrum had gone straight through the
00:37:15coming out the other side they're obviously going to have to reverse back and get around again
00:37:25the rain is uh pretty steady at ponte pool
00:37:44um
00:37:59time gone is 38 minutes first half
00:38:07there it is safely through and australia are out to six points to
00:38:14nil with just a few minutes remaining to halftime with the second penalty goal for michelina
00:38:25i could only assume that michelina has taken over as captain would that be right
00:38:31yes he has captained australia before in test matches there's another ex-test captain of
00:38:36course sitting in the stand in uh simon hoytovan so i would say you're probably right there at least
00:38:4149 caps he's now the uh one of the most experienced guys in the team although
00:38:47david campisi is playing again of course today and he's australia's most kept
00:38:50player coming up to 60 caps he'll pass 60 caps at the world cup here
00:38:58and the campisi referees wrote a knock on there by stephen basher well you can hear what the
00:39:04crowd said and i don't know how ed saw it either you're a long way away ed mr ed
00:39:24a little fanny alofa on the near side against crowley barely gone in on an angle you notice
00:39:29that in the front row the steam coming off the players as they inch down towards the 22
00:39:35so
00:39:47well there's the ball safely under the feet of the australian forwards
00:39:50and they've made it to the 22
00:39:57well it's occupying time isn't it i don't know if they're going to try and
00:40:05go for the pushover all the way down to the line
00:40:09an actual fact too i don't believe that eels is literally bound there either at times he's coming
00:40:15off to so could stand up and dribble the ball the moment his arms come off from being totally bound
00:40:21well they're entitled to kick it away from his feet eventually the strum went down and
00:40:29it's being reset here law says number eight must be
00:40:32properly bound to both players on either side of them that is to both locks normally
00:40:42so we're going to go back for an action replay strum has turned around too far
00:40:51so
00:40:58a misty rainy day in pontypool
00:41:08strum is turning again now slattery gets it away to camp easy
00:41:12slattery finds liner horan herbert flit
00:41:22flit hit hard strong tackle on him horan again
00:41:25line up very close to the line claimed by miller it's a loose ball
00:41:33knocked forward by one of the australians so saved there by weston samoa eight and a half
00:41:38another big big tackles though weren't they a big one big one on john flett out there in the left wings
00:41:48peter fatty loper says the western samoan players love to tackle because it's in their nature
00:41:53that they love the the hard physical contact of sports
00:42:00and there's the whistle for half time here at pontypool park
00:42:03from referee ed morrison it's uh pretty wet pretty miserable at pontypool but australia
00:42:09slightly happier than the western samoans after samoa against australia at pontypool park in wales
00:42:15and david campisi has the first kick up the far touchline and a bit of a grit at the opposition
00:42:21as they came charging through and six points to nil australia lead with two penalties by
00:42:27michael liner there's a grand kick by camp easy you notice i've brought them back over halfway
00:42:33so they're into this just into the western samoa on half
00:42:37two mulatto throws palm by bird whistle via gets it away behind
00:42:41bashop apollo perilini playing at number eight today
00:42:49peter slattery who came on as a replacement for the injured nick far jones he'll be out of action
00:42:52for at least 10 days far jones via that was outside the 22 from bashop mighty robot leads
00:43:01it to john flett i lupo kicks and that's out on the full yes a long way back but you can see that
00:43:12even australia with their stars like camp easy and horan are not particularly interested in running
00:43:18it yet and roebuck hasn't been into the back line as yet either which means they're playing
00:43:23very much a percentage game they're just going to grind it out obviously australia
00:43:32oh
00:43:47well he's missed that one roebuck still not prepared to run it up
00:43:52kicking it back bashop's been waiting back
00:43:56kick very good kick that time by stephen basham an excellent kick it was a grand kick again
00:44:05actually just teasing him the last time with that kick that went down straight down the road back
00:44:11they've got to clap it on though now these next 10 minutes that's when it's exciting and it should
00:44:15be for western samara if they're ever going to claw their way back into this game otherwise it'll
00:44:20just be precession and precision work by the australians and they'll just roll their way back
00:44:26to get penalties or soft tries rolling round roll balls again the ball free and again the referee
00:44:33blowing it up absolutely crazy they're sitting in the base of that scrum they're ready to get
00:44:40blown away passed away sorry not blown away and bingo via a way to bash it back high one on
00:44:49roebuck eels is going back eels goes up
00:44:54it's back on the side of the samoans ala latoa nicely for via finds bashop looking for support
00:45:01from tu'u bainga nice kick by bainga very close to the line campisi is caught australia in trouble
00:45:09and the referee in very quickly on the goal line western samoa have a put it here they've got a
00:45:14right royal chance they've got a scrum well though big concentration
00:45:22fatty alofa will have to really call them in here i'll bet he's giving it heaps
00:45:29western samoan ball just a minute into the second half apollo perilini working hard to buy up
00:45:35and a bit of a scuffle there
00:45:45jenny calliope
00:45:50that's him number seven hard rushing by calliope and perilini
00:45:57how can it be australia's ball again here heavens
00:46:06oh that's that's that's tough stuff
00:46:15western samoa drove forward and they had the ball and the ball was due to come back
00:46:21they should have had to put under that scrum
00:46:25well we're getting uh pretty hard on referee ed morrison today
00:46:30he's the number two referee in england
00:46:33come on two mulatto throws good short hard and fast to keenan and vias kicked it away
00:46:40that ball is not out an excellent kick really by via they get curled in and uh so there will
00:46:46be another thrown for western samoa remember these are two unbeaten teams in the rugby world
00:46:52cup this in the group containing these two sides argentina and wales both are winners a win here
00:46:59would put the other the winning side through to the quarterfinals that's guaranteed
00:47:03so western samoa they're staying close they still have a great chance
00:47:08no tries in the game that's the big throw we've seen at the midfield
00:47:11a head high and crowley's thrown a punch in there and this is bad
00:47:19this is bad i think crowley threw the first one it was a stiff it was a head high tackle
00:47:25there's a head high look at that head high tackle and uh somebody took exception to
00:47:31to the incident and uh nasa being called out and crowley i think should come as well
00:47:37michael liner is the captain he wants everybody else out and brendan nasa
00:47:46referee morrison talking to brendan nasa
00:47:48oh here it is again a replay of that incident out the back and it was nasa's head high and
00:47:58then one of the samoa went in and clipped nasa and then crowley went in so crowley didn't throw
00:48:02the first junior paramore might have been the man involved but uh it's a long way up for a shot at
00:48:09goal uh however they are going to have a shot ilupo has been called up for the shot at goal
00:48:14yes it's a very difficult kick he had one from about there before in the first half and
00:48:19he fell short with it but if let's he may time it well and it's worth a punt
00:48:27now matthew buyer took the kicks from the angles against wales
00:48:31i lupo takes the long ones but if you've been watching our rugby world cup coverage you'll
00:48:36know that not many kicks are getting over with that ball from beyond 40 meters and that's in
00:48:41good condition yes true it's very noticeable but with the adrenaline pumping as it surely is for
00:48:51ana let talia i lupo then anything could happen
00:48:57it's got a big curl on it camp easy
00:49:13good kick by campo super kick by david camp easy quick throw in
00:49:19perilini taking it back there australians got there really quick
00:49:26on to apollo perilini number eight yes it'll be yellow ball
00:49:32some odds didn't get there fast enough you're absolutely dead right keith
00:49:36they had to cover that up it was well worth playing but hell they had to clear it
00:49:49well there's one for the western samoans against the head the aussies took the scrum down when
00:49:56they'd lost the tight head dear me that's a bit of a uh a bit of an insult to the australian
00:50:01scrummaging power the western samoan pack have hooked the tight end off them the aussies didn't
00:50:05go back 10 meters now if the western samoans can get the adrenaline pumping here they're in with
00:50:11a show that's danny calliope number seven taking it up via away to bashop apollo perilini the star
00:50:19of the previous day tupou famasino has kicked us out yes there's he's uh he's having a couple
00:50:27of little kicks that aren't really accurate enough tupou famasino far better to hold that
00:50:32ball in hand when they're rampaging there and push it back inside and really punch because
00:50:36they were getting down inside the 25 there's an injured man out to the right the game will
00:50:40come to a temporary stop and the game is going to go on
00:50:53well referee morrison calls it a funnel down the middle of the
00:50:56lineup keep the funnel boys he's saying turns us through on via
00:51:02another scrum for western samo they must be greatly encouraged getting the strike
00:51:06against the head there that was great and it wasn't necessarily kicked through
00:51:10either they actually got out and struck for it there must be a fair bit of pressure on in there
00:51:16good scrum again from western samoa back up with a high kick it's going around to camp easy side
00:51:22famasino's there campo goes high picked up by eels but he's under pressure look at the western
00:51:28samoan team hit for the corner flag via finds basher to bahanga
00:51:35nicely picked up by burt whistle then kelly opah
00:51:45lost it forward hard luck as samoa
00:51:50they've got to put it on now
00:51:56somebody is uh injured i think
00:52:01well that uh captain i don't think we agree with that australia
00:52:04says lost no scrums but uh one uh we saw hooked on the tight head side for western samo
00:52:15dan crowley is injured i think uh that uh danny kelly opah might be coming to the sideline as well
00:52:22brian lima brian lima this is the young man who's a secondary school boy in wellington at
00:52:30st pats college plays his rugby for the maris and pats club in wellington and was previously at
00:52:36chanel college in samoa oh and here comes timo tangaloa into the game well this could be
00:52:42interesting the man i consider to be the star for the western samoan team timo tangaloa he's
00:52:47worn the all black jersey of new zealand this year in the seven asides and against
00:52:51romania in the soviet union for a new zealand 15 timo tangaloa going to come into the game
00:52:57this is an exciting player there's a loose ball scrambling ialupo put pressure on
00:53:04but that's a good kickback by michael liner very dark here at uh
00:53:10pontypool tupou farmacino having a bit of a run lovely run by farmacino and western samoa having
00:53:18a great period in the game remember no tries so far and only a six-point lead to australia
00:53:27yes they've got to keep it on now try and win the line out
00:53:30this scrum's a lot better at this present time
00:53:38and try and get some of the australian ball can they get one of them
00:53:43heels has tidied this one up paramour is number six remember perilini today who
00:53:47played the other day on the side of the scrum wearing number seven is wearing number eight today
00:53:56hard work going in there down it goes
00:54:05well you can hear the pontypool crowd i really like that i
00:54:08well okay timo tangaloa can he make a difference
00:54:11he sure can if he's got his mind on the job he could make a big difference
00:54:20three kick for western samoa now they could put some pressure on the aussies here again
00:54:25matthew byer they look a lot sharper the samoans what are they going to do with it
00:54:30the way to bash up it's a drop kick from bashup that was an interesting choice here's perilini
00:54:35oh it's deceptive no you wouldn't read about it would you
00:54:41five meters on the western samoan side of halfway
00:54:45well that was ambitious stuff from bashup i don't think you would have had a droppy from there
00:54:49would you oh he's a bit he's a good kicker though and he's obviously got confidence
00:54:54but they conceded a lot of ground there that was that was silly mistakes rather than covering it up
00:55:05apollo perilini bandaged at wrist head above the eye and the elbows knees
00:55:13slattery liner this is the angle kick back to the new man timo tangaloa now timo is a good
00:55:19runner with the ball not such a great kicker that's probably uh and a good example of that
00:55:25didn't find his touch cutler lily crap and the ball spills forward yes lily crap looked up at
00:55:33the man and never ever looked at the ball there i've seen a few of their mates go down and pick
00:55:39crunching tackles even today too the australians i think might be trying to
00:55:44just gradually win this and play for another day
00:55:49stephen bashup gets it away to touch good kick by stephen bashup this is the guy whose brothers
00:55:55here at the world cup playing for new zealand there's a samoan blood way back in the parentage
00:56:02of stephen bashup so he elected to try for western summers in their team his brother
00:56:08graham is the new zealand halfback nice work by eels the big double palm
00:56:21see that ball yes australia should have been allowed to play that back too
00:56:25so
00:56:33what we're doing these referees are making the game very much like league but we're having scrums
00:56:37to replay the resets instead of just having the playback and it takes us four minutes to
00:56:41get through a scrum rather than the half second or half minute it does for a playback
00:56:45pressure on the liner now halfway kicked away by burt whistle
00:56:53that goes horan bunce gets him in the water what is the referee rule here referee has ruled a penalty
00:57:03he wanted that's rule for going over the top that is a strange one
00:57:06referee ed morrison grabbed the ball he slid into his back to grab the ball off
00:57:16so that was one of the best the western samoan attacks
00:57:22but referee morrison with only two men involved or maybe it was three
00:57:26has given australia the penalty the catcher is aya lupo timo tangalawa
00:57:35oh well picked up by tupo fat massino punch that same little kick ahead
00:57:41and across the touchline it goes
00:57:46you're not running with any real conviction though are they the western samoan backs either
00:57:50they ran with a lot more pace on sunday against wales they've got to get into that pace and really
00:57:56gas it the thing though earl is that this ground is getting quite a bit worse there's a bit of
00:57:59surface water over in the right hand corner the rain has continued pouring down uh quite steadily
00:58:05quite steadily throughout the game yes that's true too i accept that it's quite wet underfoot
00:58:15yeah they were holding back junior paramour from coming through and he held back on throwing a big
00:58:19punch too so here's a chance for western samoa that's a 40 meters out i don't know if they'll
00:58:24ever shot a goal from here australia have had more possession 58 to 42 yes and that 42 percent
00:58:32really lies like a lot of statistics too but it hasn't been great ball that western samoa's got
00:58:39shot at goal and they're changing the goal kicker this time matthew buyer coming in
00:58:49time gone about uh 16 minutes second half no tries in a very tight game between western samoa
00:58:56and australia look at the mist and fine rain around ponty pool park this very picturesque
00:59:04location on a on a fine day it's a beautiful place to come and watch sport and to be involved in sport
00:59:11but matthew via also from the marist st pats club in wellington
00:59:21he's had a couple of seasons playing in italy as well matthew via
00:59:24so he's a pretty experienced young man
00:59:33good kick but just short
00:59:38taken by mark birdwhistle good little technical kick by birdwhistle
00:59:45now a late uh look like a late charge on birdwhistle and here's an easier kick for
00:59:53western samoa and another shot at goal coming up for matthew buyer
00:59:58peter fadulova giving the signal but could have been jeff miller who made the late charge
01:00:02let's look at birdwhistle miller coming across and yes that was a good call by the referee
01:00:08the ball goes across the touchline the referee then brings the penalty in to the 15 meter mark
01:00:17the actual fact that looks like he's allowed the buyer to put the ball in just away from
01:00:22the 15 meter mark just in from that it's not exactly on the 15 meter mark is it yes he might
01:00:27have been watered there and he's allowed him to come slightly closer to the touch line just to
01:00:31get a bit of footing well this becomes a vital kick for western samoa they would really want
01:00:38this one there's been no scoring since half time
01:00:50oh that's bad luck it just shaved the upright
01:00:54well that's a big miss there's a crucial time psychologically too for some that would have
01:00:59helped dramatically their attitude their psyche and their enthusiasm that have really gone mad
01:01:06i would suggest after that would it be incredible western samoa beating both
01:01:11wales and australia within the same week well it could still be on it's only six to nil
01:01:16so all the samoan people there it up your butt keep your spirits up it could be on because
01:01:24they've got to take those kickoffs the dropouts kickoffs
01:01:27gotta regain possession and they've led australia backhands right off
01:01:37peter slattery is appealing to the touch judge for some naughty play by one of the
01:01:41samoan flankers who tried to hook the ball back at his side with his hand before it was put in
01:01:50aya lupo deflected that one off his shins flint has lost it did he get a hand on it
01:01:54referees run to the spot but as that play run on slattery timo tangaloa is going back
01:02:04there's big timo
01:02:07and he puts it safely to touch yes i thought he got a hand to that he put his hand down to stop it
01:02:13and it ricocheted off back onto his uh the referee obviously played it as his boot which is fair
01:02:19enough it's very hard to tell when you've got so many legs and knees and players to look through
01:02:24to see a ball down there referees asked him to throw it in again while he goes down and says cut
01:02:32it out to the players at the back of the line out kelly up is down the back against miller they've
01:02:38had a good battle eels makes the big jump well thrown good work by eels and now coca now crowley's
01:02:45picked it up sixton hill australia leads a tough battle in the mud at pontypool park
01:03:02well the referee's given that one to samoa for the next put in the ball actually rolled out
01:03:08on the australian side but it came off the hands uh of the samoan players going forward there's
01:03:13what an inspiration he is to rugby players in western samoa a charismatic leader of rugby man
01:03:23mashup he's kicked well all day oh that's a fine kick to beat two
01:03:30man step onto his other foot and then spiral away with his left foot excellent play
01:03:45a lot of these australians put their hands up i know that uh while the ball's been thrown and i
01:03:49know means it says always how on earth can you ever jump with your two bloody hands up in the
01:03:55he was saying the other day he was very scathing of the modern technique
01:03:59here's frank bunts near halfway matthew byer bashup
01:04:08up goes slattery for a good catch but got him
01:04:14it's there on the australian side
01:04:19hands used in there says referee ed morrison
01:04:21ed morrison made his debut in international rugby as a referee just last season in paris
01:04:29and he is the most recent international referee to send a man off he sent off
01:04:35kojo kari with a big romanian lock in their international
01:04:38against france that was in about june he's only had a handful of internationals and this
01:04:45is his second appearance as a referee at the rugby world cup ed morrison
01:04:51so it's not a spectacular running match the conditions don't allow that look at the leaves
01:05:02across the field from the many trees here in pontypool park two tough hookers there
01:05:08two umalatai stand the man they call them and phil kerns i feel as though the game slipping
01:05:14away a wee bit from western samoa though keith they've got to win this line out and they've lost it
01:05:17it's certainly gone forward though
01:05:24well played well played paramour
01:05:35two unbeaten teams in the rugby world cup two teams that could well
01:05:39qualify for the quarterfinals out of this group
01:05:42a win today will ensure one of them will qualify
01:05:52via baship
01:05:57flat waiting john clinton a speedy right winger a charge down a 50-50 ball a lovely run by
01:06:05to overhanger burt whistle's got an acclaimed it via out to bash it bash about to burt whistle
01:06:13out there farmacino into burt whistle well kicked ahead by mark burt whistle the lock
01:06:20and across comes michael light of the soccer kick it away sorry it was peter slattery
01:06:26good play by burt whistle got into the movement twice and kept on doubling
01:06:30as if he was playing sevens lovely stuff for a lot
01:06:37it might be tight and it might be a very exciting game in terms of the way they're playing it but
01:06:41it's certainly exciting in terms of the scoreline and the amount of willing that many people are
01:06:47doing particularly new zealanders and i'd say most of the pacific would love to see western
01:06:51samoa give australia a rubbing can they tip over the wallabies this afternoon at piney pool park
01:06:58kelly upper number seven's done good work it's back with fire again away bunts coming strongly
01:07:03forward that's a strong midfield defense though little tim horn's a good tackler and referee has
01:07:09come over and said they came over the top and it's a penalty for western samoa yes they came over the
01:07:15top there's one other angle too they put their hands out and stopped via playing it they flicked
01:07:19it away from just he's picking it up from the base of the scrum or the rock in that case so
01:07:24matthew buyer has a very important kick this time that last one just shaved the post now this
01:07:29is not exactly a fait accompli which is a pacific term i've just invented l
01:07:37meaning it's not exactly a kick that you can assume will go over even though it's very handy
01:07:42no because it's very slippery one underfoot and two the ball is slippery because they're all
01:07:47complaining about it being semi-plastic and it isn't but uh it has that sort of feel about it
01:07:54and there's no lace
01:07:58and mere mortals are finding it very difficult to kick it's 22 meters out
01:08:06but this is a vital moment for western samoa they're in this game
01:08:10they're in it even more if this kick goes over
01:08:13so
01:08:20well what a shout's going up and i think we can hear the echoes coming back from apia
01:08:26as western samoa have closed the gap to just three points australia six western samoa three
01:08:33and about to 15 minutes left to play in the game they've got to take this kick off
01:08:38let's just stress the importance of these kickoffs they must again reassert their authority
01:08:45and get down into the australian half to start putting pressure on them
01:08:48and for the australians for a change to start doubting their supremacy
01:08:54liner kicks off we could be in for a thrilling last quarter of an hour
01:08:58and steven bashop who has had a superb game in the conditions he's guided it well he hasn't
01:09:05found his touch with that one though roebuck puts it back and the same man waits my word he's
01:09:11handled that ball as though he's got glue on his hands that ball hasn't found the touch this time
01:09:17slattery kicks it there's misty water coming in on the lenses of the cameras here and
01:09:25peter fattialofa is protesting against a late charge ruling by referee morrison
01:09:30peter fattialofa the western samoan captain
01:09:34and here's a chance to put australia out to that six point lead again yes
01:09:41well i was in the middle of singing the praises of steven basher but he missed touch twice
01:09:45earl and that was bad well that was what caused the problem because he had those forwards running
01:09:48around and they were judged to be inside the 10 yard area they must not go into that 10 yard circle
01:09:59and they must stay outside it after the catch is being made too
01:10:06the samoans have put a superb pressure on australia at times in this game
01:10:15yes they had one really only one chance of scoring though and that scrum right
01:10:19down on the goal line just towards the end of the first half
01:10:21they went very very close but not close enough reminding you that michael liner here is now
01:10:31captaining australia in the absence of nick far jones who left the field with strained
01:10:35knee ligaments and is out of action in the world cup for at least 10 days
01:10:40far jones sitting in the stand watching
01:10:41me
01:10:47well he's hooked it listen to the crowd that's hardly sporting listen to the crowd they're
01:10:54cheering the miss by michael liner the world's greatest goal kicker he's hooked it outside
01:10:59and western samoa still in here with a chance look at the way the western samoa players
01:11:05turn their back on it they're looking for the deflection off the post of course but maybe
01:11:09some of them couldn't bear to look
01:11:24he's banged this one down the middle of the field it's curled around
01:11:29and campo has played it safe most of the day goes back behind the 22
01:11:34the ball is out there he's got around the field big bark burt whistle hasn't he the lock forward
01:11:42and shown skill too good handling skills look at the rain pelting down there's no wind it's
01:11:48coming straight down here at pontypool park highly dramatic match no tries have been scored
01:11:56and really the winning of this group in the world cup qualifying now
01:12:01hangs in the balance cutler goes high lily crap in the mall
01:12:12away goes jeff miller he lost his place remember in the wallaby team after their
01:12:20win over wales stood him down for the next match against england and he hasn't been back in since
01:12:26well i think australia will try and roll and push the scrum too they'll try and take it if they can
01:12:31well if it comes back to liner you can put a ring around it he'd be putting it up in the air
01:12:37it's a little pop kick it's in the air by lupo
01:12:41skiddy ball oh he gets his boot onto it gets it away to touch a little risky stuff though
01:12:48god's are smiling on you my friend
01:13:01so there he is he's had an excellent game today worked so very hard
01:13:09not only in the forward areas but out in the open as well buyers decided to kick oh he's in trouble
01:13:18you better watch he's not penalized for not releasing
01:13:22he didn't have to because he was up on he was on his feet wasn't he
01:13:25so the ball was down on the deck the scrum order look at the rain absolutely pelting down
01:13:33oh fatal hesitation matthew
01:13:41referee morrison been quite fair there and allowing no he's not he's allowing the game
01:13:46to go on that's tough luck on the boot of by he's back in action again
01:13:49again now the referee's got a difficult job here to be fair because uh some of the footholds here
01:13:56in a day like today with the rain lashing down they're very hard to maintain true
01:14:04replacement halfback slattery now here comes the second shove from the wallabies
01:14:14and the referee is saying to them that's a slip so he's not penalizing them for anything else
01:14:18but for a slip what he wants to let them do then is take the ball or tell them to take it
01:14:26six to three no tries in the game by my clock about to 10 minutes to play in the game
01:14:37well i really don't know how the referee sorts this out well i think he tells them to take it
01:14:42otherwise they'll be here for the rest of the week you mean take the ball out and take the ball out
01:14:45and play it that's what he's saying too
01:14:54okay it's there for australia
01:15:01well the referee this time has penalized the western samoans for collapsing the scrum well
01:15:07he had to have about four scrums before he decided that peter fantolofa going back he was one of the
01:15:12men in the front row penalized for taking it down look at that rain falling down there he is
01:15:17peter fantolofa the piano shifter he doesn't play them he just shifts him
01:15:26great frenchman say that one of the great quotes wasn't it
01:15:29rugby is a game for piano players and piano shifters
01:15:34i don't know how you drew that conclusion i didn't know the team didn't play the piano
01:15:37well he's speaking metaphorically about the love the backs and the beautiful music they can play
01:15:41when they run with the ball like the french backs last night
01:15:53torrential rain coming straight down there's no wind to shift it about liners had 50 percent success
01:16:00rate
01:16:14through it goes nine three now to australia the time
01:16:18ticks away about eight minutes to play and the six point gap restored for the wallabies
01:16:30so all the points for his side so far from australia's stand-in leader this afternoon
01:16:43aya lupo kicks out it's too far i've lost the ball again
01:16:52on wet days like this i have always been inclined to kick the ball very very long
01:16:56down into that corner five yards off the goal line says you stop this uh rubbish
01:17:05cut was taking the heat there short side by slattery knocked on by famasino
01:17:20now it's great you must kick it down into the western samo on half where it put it really
01:17:24down to put him under pressure again perhaps get another penalty or a roll over try or push over try
01:17:31it's a short one for camp easy's wing camp easy is there
01:17:38liner has picked that one and taken it into the mall coke has mauled it for him
01:17:42now the aussies are rolling away this is good work by the australian pack
01:17:46miller there yes this is what they're always going to do wasn't it
01:17:50so
01:18:00well lost it forward chance for western samoa to play with the ball yes they might be forced
01:18:07to run here keith now it'd be interesting won't it i mean i think they've really got to have a
01:18:11go and yet it's fought with risk on a day like this and it could end up with a soft try to
01:18:15australia but i think with only eight minutes to go western sama have to get off the rack
01:18:20well will they run it via bash it they cut down the options did australia there was good defense
01:18:29by horan and herbert they came up very flat midfield so there was no chance of bashop running it out
01:18:36coming near the end of the game nine to three no tries tough game good performance by australia
01:18:50to be in the lead fine performance by underdogs western samoa to push them this hard
01:18:57there's old skylab cutler getting up getting it
01:19:00up line up now that man herbert looked like he might have been in front
01:19:07by lupo's lost it it's there for australia
01:19:15now we've seen that gesture from referees a few times
01:19:18there is a fair call
01:19:29oh there they go a drop pass by bashop advantage applying here says referee morrison
01:19:35goes back now for the scrum well that's what happens the pressure of trying to run it
01:19:41it's still far better though for western samoa to have a go rather than just quietly fade away
01:19:47here they must still try to attack five minutes to go in the game
01:19:58short sideliner kicking out towards campisi and there's a good australian attack being pushed up
01:20:07into the corner yes and that's where the australians now will try to stay technically they must just
01:20:14lock it into that one corner and i should say they won't even try to come out of there
01:20:20the idea is to see if you can stay there for five minutes when you're already up by six
01:20:27good jump by eels who came up in the line they're the number eight yes and that's what they're doing
01:20:32so
01:20:45miller has the ball but he's lost it in there to somebody else now
01:20:53well the ball's gone to australia for the next put in
01:20:55incidentally if the match should be drawn two points each would be given to the teams
01:21:04in the for the championship table it's three for a win two for a draw one for a loss
01:21:09no points uh for a team that doesn't complete a game or the game is abandoned for some reason
01:21:16alala toa is injured here it's very near the end
01:21:19what a day it's been down here rain has poured right through the day
01:21:30and the ground is rather heavy and fast very little of the game has been played up in this
01:21:34corner so actually conditions there are quite good but look at these western samoa players
01:21:39still heroes in my book ill they're battling away today they now have to provide it they don't win
01:21:44or draw here they now have to beat argentina in their third match on the weekend yes that's
01:21:49a sad thing they've played too many of their good players three times in a week and they've
01:21:53been absolutely gut-busting tests each one of them but what a credit they've been regardless
01:21:59of what happens from now on their whole tournament has been a success in the one game where they
01:22:04created some on history and dare i say it definitely some on sporting history
01:22:10so the rain continues to crash down onto ponty pool park australia putting in the big scrum
01:22:19that might be the only way they'll get over look at those numbers down
01:22:24referee has said that western samoa took it down again and this could be the one that will clinch
01:22:30it for australia liners decided to have a shot and that'll take up time and it could put them
01:22:36out past the six point gap yes that's what he's got to do i mean you can't blame liner for doing
01:22:41it in the crowd uh it's more wishful thinking i think from the crowd and i'm sure it would
01:22:46be from you people in up here too i'm still not convinced though having gone through this game
01:22:58i think new zealand camp will be very pleased that is the all black camp that eels is still
01:23:03at number eight i just don't think that he's strong enough or can he get low enough to the
01:23:11ground to actually punch around scrums and he's been the missing link really today they sure miss
01:23:17gavin imagine him in this wet day driving in low and setting it up for the australians i think
01:23:23they'll have to rethink their scrum which is good in a way for new zealand because it means that
01:23:27there's a bit of uncertainty creeping into the game plan of the australians
01:23:36liner right near the end of the game
01:23:40well there's still a slim chance for western samoa to come out with a draw but right on the
01:23:46goal line they've made a forward pass so dear oh dear oh dear yes i think they'd be better to come
01:23:51to 25 and take a long one quick one long oh dear they tried to break out there from behind their
01:24:00own goal line but there was a forward pass according to referee morrison australia with
01:24:04the put-in can they make a push over here they may well clinch the game
01:24:09hey
01:24:20heavens these consistent continual scrums are boring though aren't they shove shove shove
01:24:40so here they go again maybe one last scrum attempt for australia to get over
01:24:50we've seen that shot a bit
01:24:53in this telecast today close up of the feet
01:25:01so here we go again here we go
01:25:03here we go these men will be uh that's it it's all over these men will be exhausted
01:25:10and it's all over brave attempt by western samoa has ended in disappointment and defeat and for
01:25:16australia they've got out of it got out of jail as they say in sporting terms nine points to three
