00:00:00He has the honour of refereeing the first ever World Cup match in Australia.
00:00:05Troy Coker, his first Test match, and Mr Lawrence, assisted by David Bishop from New Zealand
00:00:11and Rennie Orquet from France.
00:00:14The first ever World Cup match in Australia is underway, and Harrison, the England skipper,
00:00:26fittingly with the first touch.
00:00:32Well we've just seen a pulsating match at Lancaster Park in Christchurch, a 20-all draw
00:00:37between France and Scotland.
00:00:42Michael Liner, Voideman sets up, he's wrapped up by Dean Richards, the Australians have
00:00:50smuggled the ball ahead, and a shaky kick from Liner out on the full.
00:00:56Remembering that Michael Liner was unfit for the Test match against Korea last week
00:00:59and he'll be lacking match fitness.
00:01:01I think all the players are going to take a little while to settle down, that was Michael
00:01:05Liner's first touch of the football and was unfortunate to win out on the full, but I
00:01:09don't think we'll see too many of those today.
00:01:14Australia with two men over two metres tall, Campbell, number five there, six feet eight.
00:01:25Liner, cut out the slack, and here's Campisi.
00:01:31Good pass away to Andy Slack, looping round, but plenty of white jerseys.
00:01:38Well it was good backing up from Slack, unfortunately Campisi again may have been a little bit nervous,
00:01:45he really didn't take that ball as well as he should, and the captain had to cover up
00:01:49for him.
00:01:52Brian Moore, the 25-year-old trainee solicitor from Nottingham, number two.
00:01:59Dooley does well, Rees, and the whole England pack arrived, Underwood, one of the quickest
00:02:09men out there.
00:02:10Great play here from England, Salmon couldn't hold on.
00:02:18Jamie Salmon who made his test debut for the New Zealand All Blacks against Romania,
00:02:23he's a dual international.
00:02:24It was great work by England, that's what they've got to do, get it out to the likes
00:02:30of Underwood and Harrison all day and really stretch the Australian defence.
00:02:34Tommy Lawton, the Australian hooker, and again Dooley takes the line out, Salmon, Sims, here
00:02:44comes Rose, Harrison chases, Gould the last line, and it almost slipped away from him.
00:02:56England player out cold here, Marcus Rose.
00:02:59Yep, he certainly was, we'll look at this play now, he kicks the ball, Peter Gregg coming
00:03:04from the blindside wing, magnificently takes him out just after he kicks the ball.
00:03:09And you may have seen Rose there, he was just staring vacantly at the bottom of that ruck.
00:03:17England with the scrum feed, but a real sense of urgency in the early stages about the England
00:03:22forwards.
00:03:23Mr Keith Lawrence having trouble with the front Rose, England's scrum holding well.
00:03:46Richard Harding controlled by Richards, it's gone straight up in the air, they're all on
00:03:49side.
00:03:55Williams to Salmon, that's Underwood, well they were two bad kicks by the English side,
00:04:06first by Harding and then by Salmon, they've really got to put the ball behind the Australians
00:04:11and turn them around and as such make their own players run onto it.
00:04:1822 metre line, four minutes elapsed in this first half, Marcus Rose we've heard from the
00:04:24dressing room has regained consciousness and he's now feeling comfortable.
00:04:32Nick Far Jones number nine for Australia.
00:04:41Enrique Rodriguez, the loose head prop for Australia.
00:04:47He's opposing Gary Pearce on this side of the scrum and the penalty to Australia for
00:04:53England pulling the front row down.
00:04:56Paul Rendall, loose head prop for England, he's certainly a seasoned campaigner, 33 years
00:05:03of age.
00:05:04So a near capacity crowd here at Concord, this match going live to New Zealand and right
00:05:18across Australia.
00:05:20No score in the game, five minutes gone.
00:05:29Brian Moore, reserve hooker for the first three Five Nations matches this year.
00:05:34Peter Winterbottom, couldn't control, here's Roger Gould and there must be some sort of
00:05:45cloud over the fitness of Gould, he hasn't played a match of this intensity this season
00:05:50and he'll be looking to come through today with no recurrence of those sciatic nerve
00:05:55and hamstring injuries which have dogged his career.
00:06:0035 metres out from the Australian goal line.
00:06:21Some assistance in the line out there for Wade Dooley, his team mates helped him up,
00:06:26penalty Australia.
00:06:28Must be very disheartening trying to jump against Cutler Campbell and having a number
00:06:31eight like Coker in the side, so I think the Englishmen are going to try and get away with
00:06:35as much as they can.
00:06:37Line out's three apiece so far.
00:06:40So Australia into England territory for one of the few times so far.
00:06:47Number seven Gary Rees opposed to Simon Portovan at the back, six is Peter Winterbottom, he's
00:06:52known as the straw man.
00:07:05Just short of half way, Harding, Campisi, nasty ball, he's played a lot at full back
00:07:15and there he showed the benefits.
00:07:20It's important for Australia that both Campisi and Grigg get back to assist Roger Gould as
00:07:24much as possible, they're both very competent players and if there's any doubt about Roger
00:07:28Gould's fitness at least these two guys can take some of the pressure off him.
00:07:44A testing Gary Owen, Harrison underneath and he took it well, Webb, his first touch of
00:07:53the football in the World Cup, 30 metres out from the England goal line and a little pat
00:07:59on the backside there from Jamie Salmon but a good kick from Papworth.
00:08:12Troy Coker at the front doing well, Rodriguez smuggles it back, Lawton, hand in the ruck
00:08:23by Australia under the referee's nose, once the ball is on the ground you can't help it
00:08:29back with your hand, you have to use your feet and a silly penalty there by the Australians.
00:08:44This is the twelfth meeting between these two countries, the fourth in Australia, line
00:08:52out's now 6-3 to Australia.
00:08:57Steve Cutler at the back, Rodriguez into half-back, nasty pass, back to Tyneman, 10 metre line,
00:09:10Lawton at 5-8, oh didn't the crowd love that, he didn't quite have the pace to tackle Webb,
00:09:18Troy Coker did, 35 metres from the Australian goal line.
00:09:26Well we've already seen the Englishmen willing to run that ball, Australia have got to be
00:09:29very careful where they place their kicks, unfortunately Tommy Lawton went to the wrong
00:09:34side and had nothing to do and kicked straight into the hands of Webb.
00:09:38Dean Richards there, the 23-year-old policeman from Leicester, locking the England's ground.
00:09:46It looks as though he's going to pack down between the breakaway and the second row here.
00:09:52He's not packing down in the middle.
00:09:57And that was a rehearsed move, Underwood was supposed to take the ball at pace, the only
00:10:02problem is he didn't get a finger to it.
00:10:04Well the Englishmen pull that move all the time, the only problem was the referee got
00:10:08in the way, normally Harding would come around the referee and the defensive breakaway would
00:10:14run into him.
00:10:1712 metres from halfway.
00:10:33Still no score in the game, 10 minutes now gone in the first half.
00:10:37Salmon, Sims, Portovan spoiled the run around, Harrison, taken by Campisi, Winterbottom very
00:10:53quickly to that loose ball.
00:10:55Well that was good play by breakaway Simon Portovan, he shadowed the English back line
00:11:00across the field, they attempted to do a run around and who was there?
00:11:03Simon Portovan.
00:11:22So now Jonathan Webb with a chance to score the first points on Australian soil of this
00:11:28inaugural World Cup.
00:11:38Well it's been a pretty even tussle so far in the forwards, some spilt passes, but this
00:11:47would be a great morale booster for England.
00:11:59That was a pretty nervous attempt.
00:12:02And now Roger Gould.
00:12:14Repeating earlier scores in New Zealand, Romania defeated Zimbabwe 21-20 and Scotland and France
00:12:21a 20 all draw.
00:12:23Harding's put everyone onside, line are taken well.
00:12:28Gould on his left foot, quick throw to Richards, Campbell the tackler, but the referee not
00:12:38happy with that quick line out.
00:12:40Well that was great play from Michael Arnott, he took that ball just as Williams hit him,
00:12:43he kept his cool and kept on his feet, threw it to Roger Gould and for Australia Gould
00:12:48put it out.
00:12:49Redman at the front, Williams, line of the tackler, Harding on the short side, knocked
00:13:04ahead by Lawton.
00:13:10Tommy Lawton being very conspicuous in the loose.
00:13:19Harrison, David Campisi inside, he's 22, and that one has gone a mile.
00:13:39Jonathan Webb can only gain 25 metres, so a big territorial gain for the Australians.
00:13:50Dean Richards has certainly added an extra dimension in skill and creativity at number
00:14:038 for England.
00:14:06Very constructive player.
00:14:14Very good wrestle going on in the front row.
00:14:20Liner, Papworth, Gould's in the line, couldn't handle, Underwood, well that would have been
00:14:31shut the gate if he'd handled.
00:14:35Probably the fastest man on the field, he had a 40 metre dash, and Mark I doubt whether
00:14:41they would have caught him.
00:14:42Well there's no way in the world Australia would have caught him, as you said it would
00:14:45have been a certain try, but Australia have got to concentrate a little bit more, that
00:14:48pass I think was from Papworth to Roger Gould was just too bad to be true.
00:14:54Carr-Jones with a clever kick, Webb is following, and running everyone on side, Gould.
00:15:08Well the referee has ruled here that there were men inside the 10 metres, they made no
00:15:12effort to retire, because they were in front of the man who kicked the ball they had to
00:15:16stay outside the 10 metre radius, and the option there was for a penalty where the ball
00:15:23was kicked, correction a scrum where the ball was kicked, or a penalty from where it landed.
00:15:35Well this is a very difficult kick for Michael Liner, it's I think a couple of inches inside
00:15:40his own half, I've certainly seen him kick him from here before, but I'm just a little
00:15:45bit curious about the make-up of the ball, as you know we've got new mitre balls for
00:15:49this competition, and hopefully he's practised enough at training to put this one over.
00:15:55So Michael Liner, he's a member of the exclusive 200 club now, exactly 200 points in test football,
00:16:01he's not going to have the distance.
00:16:09So both goal kickers having one penalty shot in the first 15 minutes, still no score in
00:16:14the game.
00:16:26Jonathan Webb with the drop out, Coca not handling, looked to be troubled by the sun.
00:16:33Number 1 is Topol Rodriguez, playing in his 36th test match this afternoon, 15 of those
00:16:47with Argentina.
00:16:50Richards number 8, Rhys losing ahead, Rodriguez clearing, quick hands here from the Australians,
00:16:57back it goes to Grigg, he's supported from the right wing, Par Jones, slack, Webb underneath,
00:17:10and some bad communication there by England, almost proving disastrous.
00:17:14Well that was unbelievable, in a test match such as this there should be no doubt at all,
00:17:17there's got to be one call and one call only, Webb and I don't know who it was but maybe
00:17:22the winger, they should have just called that ball and somebody taken it.
00:17:26Man on the ground interfering with the ball.
00:17:42So Peter, or Dean Richards has been penalised, diving over the ball, and this a much easier
00:17:49attempt for Michael Liner.
00:17:57Richards scored two tries in his test debut in 1985 against Ireland, the first England
00:18:03forward to do so in nearly 60 years.
00:18:26Is it first points for Australia?
00:18:35It's hit the upright and bounced through.
00:18:40Well that's doing it the hard way, 18 minutes gone in the first half.
00:18:48Well it's a good start for Australia, it doesn't matter how they go over but as long as they
00:18:51go over, Michael Liner's confidence would have soared with that, I'm sure the Australian
00:18:55team will look forward now to just scoring more points.
00:19:04So both sides really cancelling the other out in the first 20.
00:19:14Again it's right into the sun.
00:19:17Par Jones, Steve Tyman, he's going to have a run, through the first tackle of Williams.
00:19:27Good ruck ball for the Australians, Lawton, Liner with a big kick.
00:19:32Webb underneath, and he did well to scramble that one into touch.
00:19:41Well that's good intelligent play from Tommy Lawton, he realised again he was caught in
00:19:44that blindside, didn't hesitate, passed the quick ball to Michael Liner who put up that
00:19:48beautiful kick, we'll see it here, Webb catches it, Michael Liner chasing his own kick and
00:19:52England lucky to get out of trouble then.
00:19:57Good jump by Bill Campbell but pilfered by Dean Richards.
00:20:04England forwards driving Australia back, Nigel Redman does well.
00:20:09Salmon, Sims, his Webb, Harrison's with him.
00:20:15Referee says play on, this is Brian Moore the hooker.
00:20:20England fears it again, Williams with that left foot spiral torpedo punch, too big.
00:20:29Ball out on the full, right back to halfway.
00:20:33Martin Green, head of economics at the Warwick School, former Cambridge captain, not happy with that kick.
00:20:40Well I think Williams made the wrong choice then, he had three or four players out wide,
00:20:44all it would have taken was one long pass and they surely would have had the overlap.
00:20:52Halfway line, Australia 3-0, 20 minutes gone first half.
00:20:56Australia has marched that ball a good 12 metres, Slack, Campisi, intercepted by Harrison.
00:21:16Nick Bar-Jones, inside is Greig, he couldn't hold on.
00:21:25Referee's playing advantage, Roger Gould, he's caught by Underwood.
00:21:32Rodriguez in trouble, England power in.
00:21:37Oh they showed some beef that time, Dean Richards, Paul Rendall, great stuff from the England forwards.
00:21:45That all started with poor back line movement by Australia, Campisi was far too flat when he attempted to take that ball,
00:21:51subsequently England got it and now Australia must have lost 15-20 yards.
00:21:59Dean Richards, Peter Winterbottom, Harding caught by Campisi, Redman back to Harrison.
00:22:07This is Kevin Simms, Webb the full back, England looking dangerous, Simms again, Underwood couldn't take the final pass,
00:22:18the referee pulls it back to the 22 for the knock on.
00:22:23Well this is where the Englishmen are proving most dangerous in broken play, their wingers are coming across the field,
00:22:28we'll look here, Webb links into the back line, if Underwood again could have taken this ball it could have been easily a try for England.
00:22:35As it turns out I couldn't understand why referee Lawrence pulled that up, just outside the 22.
00:22:46Australia looking for a big punt kick from Gould and he certainly was equal to the occasion.
00:22:54Roger Gould whose Wallaby Tour first started in 1978.
00:23:05I've lost the time, I've lost the time.
00:23:18Again some assistance in the line out by England, I guess they had to resort to those sort of tactics against the tall timber from Australia.
00:23:29Bill Campbell there on the left, 203 centimetres or 6 feet 8, certainly dwarfing Michael Liner.
00:23:3923 and a half minutes gone in the first half, and Australia now plaking play inside the England 22.
00:23:59Australia leading 10-6 in the line outs and that was a vital one for England.
00:24:16Good clearance from Far Jones.
00:24:2122 metre line, Coker, outside is Grigg, Underwood the tackler, desperate defence from England.
00:24:34Well again great play by Liner who took that ball up, he could have passed it earlier, the forwards set it up through Poitovan and Grigg almost in the corner.
00:24:43Lawton seems to be having a little bit of trouble hearing the line out calls.
00:24:51Poitovan very close to the goal line.
00:24:56And the referee's whistle may have gone a little early there.
00:25:05Well look at this, almost try again, I think it was Coker, Bullock in his way down the sideline, Peter Grigg put his head back, I think Williams stuck out his end, Michael Liner was looking for the try.
00:25:16Australia trying to move the England scrum, they can't.
00:25:20Michael Liner, cut out pass here, Gould couldn't handle, he tried to paddle the ball on, slacks wrapped up, England may have lost it again though.
00:25:34And it looks as though there's been some offside play by England right in front of their posts, they were in a nasty situation.
00:25:45Penalty 6-2 in favour of Australia, a contentious penalty that one.
00:25:50But it gives Liner a chance now to make it 6-0 after 25 minutes.
00:25:54We'll try and see what happens, there was players going in everywhere, the boots everywhere, the play come out, referee Lawrence picked it up well before that.
00:26:03But I'm a little bit disconcerned that Australia's losing control of the ball out wide.
00:26:06Not only is it disappointing that they can't score the try, but they give the England flyers Harrison and Underwood an opportunity to pick up that loose ball and scoot away to score the try.
00:26:16Greg Craig, the Australian physiotherapist, just applying some tension to David Campisi.
00:26:24Alan Jones has now coached Australia in 21 test matches for 17 wins.
00:26:31They've lost only four games under his control, all of those to the All Blacks, and three by a single point.
00:26:39Well, the two line-out giants, Steve Cutler and Bill Campbell, causing all sorts of problems for England.
00:26:47Then throw in Troy Coker and Steve Tyneman, and they really have their backs to the wall in the line-outs.
00:26:54But you may have seen in that last ruck that one of the England players was on the ground and was interfering with the play.
00:27:02You can't do that, you have to get back to your feet if you want to do that, and Miner's going to make it 6-0.
00:27:12Yes, the idea of the game is to stay on your feet, that's the way the referees police it.
00:27:17So a penalty conceded by England under their posts.
00:27:22Two penalty goals to Michael Liner.
00:27:25What England can't afford to do, just because they're being out-jumped in the line-outs and Australia have got a lot more weight,
00:27:32they've got to just play fairly, they've just got to rely on their tactics of tackling and wrapping Australia up.
00:27:48Australia really getting some good possession from rucks and walls,
00:27:56particularly over the last 10-15 minutes.
00:27:59Yields kick only gaining about 7 metres.
00:28:22Just outside the Australian 22,
00:28:25long throw to Par Jones, this is Tyneman, straight into Dean Richards.
00:28:35Par Jones using his 22 and gaining about 15 metres.
00:28:45I think there's just a little bit of lack of communication beyond the Australian scrum,
00:28:50I think there's just a little bit of lack of communication beyond the Australian scrum base.
00:28:55Again that line-out, Par Jones took the ball, obviously was looking for Michael Liner or Roger Gordon,
00:28:59again found Tyneman for the second time in the game.
00:29:04Good jump by Redman at the front.
00:29:06Williams, he spotted a gap.
00:29:08Par Jones took him head-on.
00:29:13Let's see what England can do here.
00:29:14Kevin Sims, elusive runner.
00:29:16Good ball for Webb.
00:29:17Beckett goes to Harrison.
00:29:22Good play here from England.
00:29:24Slack was offside, the referee's playing advantage.
00:29:27Webb.
00:29:32The referee has ruled that there was a maul formed.
00:29:39And now a chance for England to reply.
00:29:42Great attacking play by the Englishmen, once they could control that ball,
00:29:45their forwards are very good ball handlers, they're coming one after another,
00:29:49and I think really Andrew Slack, what he did was a professional foul,
00:29:54he really stocked a certain four points.
00:30:03So Jonathan Webb will be looking to strike this a little better than his previous one.
00:30:07There's Richard Hill in the middle, the man who captained England in the first three Five Nations internationals.
00:30:13And Martin Green finally sporting a smile.
00:30:24Again he's off target.
00:30:27Two relatively straightforward kicks from the young full-back in his first test,
00:30:32coming on as a replacement for Marcus Rose, the sharpshooter,
00:30:36who really has guided England through some situations in the Five Nations.
00:30:42Five Nations Championship, he has left the field with concussion.
00:30:46We understand he has recovered and is now in quite a comfortable condition.
00:30:51Redman tapped it back, Tyman goes down on the loose ball.
00:30:55Captain courageous, Thar Jones to Campisi.
00:31:00And a good ball and all tackle by the England captain.
00:31:08David Campisi with electrifying pace down that touchline.
00:31:13There's a man who's doing very well for England.
00:31:16Despite his lack of height, he did it again.
00:31:20But the referee said he was lifted.
00:31:23Gary Pearce and Paul Rendall, the two prop forwards arguing.
00:31:27Redman says, I wasn't lifted mate.
00:31:31Penalty 7-3, liner another shot for goal.
00:31:36Again the Englishmen just can't afford to do this or play this type of game.
00:31:41They've really got to just rely on their defence.
00:31:44Admittedly they won't get much line-out ball but there's nothing wrong with that
00:31:47as long as they're not giving away points.
00:31:49If they continue to do it, Michael Liner will continue to put Australia further in front.
00:32:11Liner from 45 metres out looking for his third penalty goal.
00:32:19Out to the left.
00:32:22And the referee says 22.
00:32:24Suspicion of a knock-on there behind the goal line by Jamie Salmon.
00:32:29I think referee Lawrence has given him the benefit of the doubt.
00:32:41Wade Dooley knocked it back.
00:32:44Williams.
00:32:47Good pressure from the Australians, liner, point of it and also Steve Cutler.
00:32:51I think Williams has got to give himself a little bit more distance between his half-back.
00:32:55He was well controlled by the forwards but instead of standing low back and giving himself plenty of time to kick,
00:33:00he really put himself under pressure.
00:33:07Richards at the back.
00:33:10Jumping off shoulders.
00:33:12England really being tamed in the line-outs.
00:33:22Liner now with yet another attempt to increase this Australian lead.
00:33:31He's kicked two from four so far.
00:33:35And penalty goals have been the story of the day thus far.
00:33:40Penalty.
00:33:45Phenomenal goal kicker this man.
00:33:48And a lot of his skill must come from his soccer playing days at the Musgrove Hill School on the Gold Coast when he was seven and eight years old.
00:33:58He's also played American football in the United States.
00:34:10Well that really is a bad miss by Liner and a let-off for England.
00:34:14Two out of five for him.
00:34:16Both goal kickers having their problems this afternoon.
00:34:19Can you imagine how Michael Liner's feeling in 1984 in the Grand Slam?
00:34:23He must have had three or four attempts of goal in the first half and he only put one of those over.
00:34:28So hopefully he'll overcome that in the second half.
00:34:35Out on the four.
00:34:37All of the Australian forwards saying let it go, let it go.
00:34:41In that situation there are several options.
00:34:44You can have another kick or you can have the scrum back at the centre of the 22 or you can have the line-out.
00:34:57Andrew Slack to Gould and Peter Gregg.
00:35:01Good pass back to Slack.
00:35:03Australia drives in.
00:35:04Australia drives in.
00:35:09The England forwards just bulldozed out of the way.
00:35:18Mark Harthill, the young Australian prop who did so well in New Zealand last year on the left.
00:35:24Alan Jones not happy with things at the moment.
00:35:26Michael Liner.
00:35:28Here comes Campisi.
00:35:30They were waiting for him.
00:35:32Good tackle by Salmon.
00:35:35Australia looking for the scrum feed.
00:35:37They were going forward.
00:35:42Well that was a better move by the Australian backs even though David Campisi was caught with the ball.
00:35:47At least his forward momentum gave Australia another put in for the scrum.
00:35:50Five minutes before half-time.
00:35:53Steve Tyneman.
00:35:57Poitavan supporting.
00:35:59Liner's anxious for the ball.
00:36:01So too is half...
00:36:03...Bar-Jones.
00:36:06Moore smuggled it back.
00:36:08He's got it.
00:36:10He's got it.
00:36:12He's got it.
00:36:14He's got it.
00:36:16He's got it.
00:36:18He's got it.
00:36:20This is Harding.
00:36:22They're running at Webb.
00:36:3722 metre line.
00:36:48Good jump by Richards.
00:36:50Getting over the top of Bill Campbell that time.
00:37:00Well it's been a very competitive clash in the forwards.
00:37:03No tries in the first half so far.
00:37:06England outgunned in the line-outs but making up in other areas.
00:37:16They've certainly been on equal terms at the breakdown.
00:37:20Hold, hold, hold.
00:37:22Hold, hold, hold.
00:37:28And a tilling left foot from Peter Williams.
00:37:33Widely travelled young man.
00:37:35He played with Transvaal in South Africa also.
00:37:42Here's Wade Dooley.
00:37:44Charging through the line-out.
00:37:47And he's been ruled offside.
00:37:50Barging in the line-out.
00:37:52Lawrence has been vicious in his interpretations of the line-out.
00:37:56It appeared to me that Dooley, all he did was catch a ball that was sitting up in the air.
00:38:00I don't really agree that he was charging through.
00:38:02After all, with only three Australians in the line-out, it would have been very easy to do.
00:38:08Yes, well his signal was for barging.
00:38:12And he looked to be penalising Dooley.
00:38:15But once the ball is tapped from the line-out, the line-out finishes.
00:38:17So, Dooley appeared to be within his rights.
00:38:20But perhaps one of the prop forwards may have put the shoulder in.
00:38:24One of the Australians.
00:38:37So, these mitre balls being used for the World Cup.
00:38:42Miner so far hasn't found them terribly to his liking.
00:38:47Two from five.
00:38:49This to make it 9-0 in the shadows of half-time.
00:38:56Well, he seems to have struck a horror patch.
00:39:03Harrison.
00:39:05Taken by slack.
00:39:11And the Australian skipper was on the ground.
00:39:14The referee has ruled he didn't release.
00:39:17It was fantastic work from Slackey.
00:39:19His reflexes show he's not as old as a lot of people appear to make him out.
00:39:24But, unfortunately, he couldn't let go of that ball.
00:39:30Big kick by Williams takes play over the halfway line.
00:39:36So, Mark, do you think Australia would be happy with their 6-0 lead?
00:39:39I think they'll be a little bit disappointed, but nothing to panic about.
00:39:43I think in the second half, particularly the last 40 minutes, or last 20 minutes,
00:39:49the English side might run out of puffs.
00:39:59Bill Campbell.
00:40:03England with lower body height.
00:40:05Tommy Lautner at half-back this time.
00:40:09Look at the drive from Poydivan.
00:40:12Capworth. He hasn't seen much of the ball.
00:40:16Gary Rees going in.
00:40:18England offside in the backs.
00:40:21That's the tenth penalty awarded against the Englishman.
00:40:25They've received four only.
00:40:27And this one looks to be just out of the range of Michael Liner.
00:40:32Michael Liner.
00:40:38This ball could be an up-and-under.
00:40:42Gary Owen.
00:40:46Richards has called for it.
00:40:48Cutler took it. Brilliantly.
00:40:50Far Jones to Liner.
00:40:52He puts up another one.
00:40:54Webb is there.
00:40:56So is Richards.
00:40:59Confusion at the back for England.
00:41:01Chance for Australia.
00:41:05Harding comes away.
00:41:08Somehow England manage to smuggle that ball back.
00:41:11And there's the siren for half-time.
00:41:17England looking for their first ever win on Australian soil.
00:41:24Cutler couldn't take it.
00:41:31England sneaking through.
00:41:34Australia with the scrum feed.
00:41:47Cleared to Roger Gould.
00:41:50That one hasn't found touch.
00:41:52It might have almost found a bit of snow if there's any up there.
00:41:57Not a bad reply from Webb.
00:41:58Rodriguez.
00:42:00Brilliant skills from the prop forward.
00:42:03Look at this kick from Far Jones.
00:42:07What a magnificent take by Rodriguez.
00:42:10He sensationally caught that falling down.
00:42:12He popped it up to Far Jones
00:42:14and has just made about 30 or 40 metres for Australia.
00:42:29Watch his coming time.
00:42:50Roger Gould.
00:42:52Well, good play by both sides.
00:42:54Campisi took that ball, got a half-break
00:42:56and I thought he may have got to the trial line.
00:42:58Peter Grigg was looping around as a good thing he should
00:43:00and Australia really firing now.
00:43:0315 metres out from the England goal line.
00:43:14Bill Campbell got a hand to it.
00:43:17He's got the ball.
00:43:18Bill Campbell got a hand to it.
00:43:24And Williams' left foot is certainly
00:43:26getting his side out of some trouble.
00:43:29I can't help but feel England are just holding on.
00:43:31We saw in the last 15 minutes of that first half
00:43:34that Australia really pressed him
00:43:36and I think we're going to see that all over again.
00:43:39Campbell again getting a hand to it at the front.
00:43:41Cutler sweeps.
00:43:43Here comes Campisi again.
00:43:45Poitavon's there first.
00:43:47He's lost it ahead.
00:43:49Dooley.
00:43:53Harding away to Salmon.
00:43:55Now it's Sims.
00:43:57This is Webb, the full-back.
00:43:59Slack, the tackler.
00:44:01It was Brett Papworth.
00:44:13So the penalty awarded to England
00:44:14just inside the touchline.
00:44:17Australia leading 6-0.
00:44:38Troy Coker winning clearly.
00:44:45Australia rolling it on the left
00:44:48and losing the ball.
00:44:50Williams.
00:44:52Sims away to Salmon.
00:44:54And here's Webb.
00:44:56Underwood outside.
00:44:58Good pass infield.
00:45:00Taken by Slack.
00:45:04Promising foray by England.
00:45:08This is when England look best
00:45:10when they really get that ball along the line.
00:45:12We'll see Webb really making an attacking play
00:45:14on the left side of him.
00:45:16Slack took Webb out.
00:45:18Peter Grigg really got him
00:45:20and that was a bit of a fluky pass
00:45:24and Andrew Slack doing the covering.
00:45:28Simon Poitavon at the back.
00:45:36Australia controlling.
00:45:40And that's a good clearance by Michael Liner.
00:45:42Taking play to within 12 at halfway.
00:46:01Two-man line-out from England.
00:46:03Goes over the back.
00:46:05Poitavon there.
00:46:07Taken by Winterbottom.
00:46:09The British Lions flanker.
00:46:11Good ball for England.
00:46:13And what a time to knock on.
00:46:18We saw Mienel, the French 5'8",
00:46:21do exactly the same thing in Christchurch.
00:46:24England just can't afford to make mistakes
00:46:26and Williams, unfortunately,
00:46:28with four men outside him,
00:46:30just couldn't handle that ball.
00:46:37Liner's outside. He's 22.
00:46:39But he's rifled that one towards touch.
00:46:42Grigg coming through.
00:46:50Australia's gain about 35 metres.
00:47:08Cutler at the back.
00:47:11England spoiled.
00:47:15Another good ruck ball.
00:47:17Williams.
00:47:19Big dummy.
00:47:21But he turned.
00:47:23And the ball coming back now for his side.
00:47:25Winterbottom in close.
00:47:27Dean Richards into Liner.
00:47:29Cutler the tackler.
00:47:32England winning some good ball.
00:47:34Underwood in.
00:47:36This is Salmon to Sims.
00:47:38Chance for England.
00:47:39Underwood's outside.
00:47:41Rory Underwood.
00:47:45The first try at the World Cup
00:47:47on Australian soil
00:47:49has been scored by the jet pilot
00:47:51Rory Underwood.
00:48:02Just when I thought Australia
00:48:04were really dominating the play,
00:48:06England put on another superb attack.
00:48:09Webb gets the ball out wide
00:48:11and just passes it to Harrison
00:48:13who really streaks to that corner.
00:48:15Fantastic try to England.
00:48:34Magnificent attempt by Webb.
00:48:37Hits the crossbar and goes through.
00:48:39That was a level.
00:48:47Look at this movement again.
00:48:49England really let this ball go out wide.
00:48:51I thought Underwood was going to muck it up.
00:48:53Went to Sims.
00:48:55He threw it over and passed to Salmon.
00:48:57And this is where Webb really,
00:48:59the try was on Harrison.
00:49:01All he had to do was just run for that corner.
00:49:03He stretched out Roger Gould to no avail.
00:49:05Couldn't pick him up.
00:49:09This is where England's danger will be.
00:49:11They can't afford to take Australia on in the fours.
00:49:13They've got to let the ball go at all costs.
00:49:15And if they can do that consistently
00:49:17or more often,
00:49:19it's going to be awfully hard for Australia.
00:49:23Halfway line.
00:49:30Cutler doing well for Australia.
00:49:32Webb certainly has lifted England's spirits.
00:49:36The first try of the game.
00:49:38Campisi in trouble back there.
00:49:41The England forwards arrive in numbers.
00:49:57This is good play from the English side.
00:49:59David Campisi took it running backwards.
00:50:01He did the right thing.
00:50:03He got to his feet straight away.
00:50:05So Australia really having to answer now.
00:50:09One try to England.
00:50:11Converted by Webb.
00:50:13A spectacular effort from touch.
00:50:15Harding, probing.
00:50:17Caught by Poitavan.
00:50:23Here they go again.
00:50:25Harrison, the try scorer.
00:50:29And the referee has ruled he was tackled.
00:50:32His knees were on the ground.
00:50:34A timely one for Australia.
00:50:37We'll see this replay here.
00:50:39Harrison, he clearly went to the ground.
00:50:41He was tackled.
00:50:43I think it was Cody.
00:50:52And that one just over the head of Mike Harrison,
00:50:54the England captain.
00:50:59The Australians have really just got to take
00:51:01a couple of deep breaths.
00:51:02The forwards have got a control point
00:51:04and just take their time.
00:51:06There's no need to panic at all.
00:51:08There's still plenty of time in this game.
00:51:15Good line-out ball for England.
00:51:17They're moving it wide again.
00:51:19It's to Salmon.
00:51:21Bad pass.
00:51:23Campisi with a chance.
00:51:25David Campisi.
00:51:27Is it his 22nd try in a test?
00:51:29It is! No!
00:51:30He scored at the try,
00:51:32but I don't think he got the ball down.
00:51:34There's no way he got the ball down.
00:51:47Well, that try will go down to David Campisi,
00:51:49but as we look at this replay,
00:51:51there's no way in the world he scored that try.
00:51:53A loose pass.
00:51:55He came tearing through, put the ball.
00:51:57It was a race between him and Underwood.
00:51:58Underwood's very, very fast.
00:52:00The ball flicks up.
00:52:02David Campisi does pick it up.
00:52:04He looks to Michael Liner to give him the try,
00:52:06but as he goes to put it down,
00:52:08unfortunately, obscured,
00:52:10but believe you me, that wasn't a try.
00:52:12We'll see it head-on.
00:52:14Again, a race between Campisi and Underwood.
00:52:16Campisi picks it up,
00:52:18looks at Michael Liner
00:52:20and then decides to go himself.
00:52:22The ball gets jarred out of his hands
00:52:24at least six inches from the ground.
00:52:28We put that one down as a try,
00:52:30but a very hollow one.
00:52:45Liner's just missed.
00:52:47Australia leading by ten to six.
00:52:49Well, Mark, I made a mistake
00:52:51with the first England try scorer
00:52:53and the referees made a mistake
00:52:55with Australia's first.
00:52:59We'll try and look at this again.
00:53:01David Campisi picks the ball up.
00:53:03He looks for Michael Liner.
00:53:05I thought he may have thrown the ball.
00:53:07The ball goes.
00:53:09Yes, you can see it there.
00:53:11He's hit by Williams.
00:53:13Simon Poydivan underneath.
00:53:16So a real blow there for England
00:53:18and a test of character now.
00:53:22David Campisi
00:53:24is almost in disbelief
00:53:26when the referee awards him
00:53:28that try.
00:53:30Here's Gary Rees.
00:53:32The England back row has been
00:53:34quite superb today.
00:53:36Rendall sets up.
00:53:38Williams.
00:53:40Webb.
00:53:42Sims outside.
00:53:44Good tackle by Papworth.
00:53:46Ball and all.
00:53:49Again, England manage to get it back.
00:53:52Long pass to Underwood.
00:53:55Sims inside.
00:53:56Chance for England.
00:53:58Kevin Sims.
00:54:01Steve Tyman, the tackler.
00:54:05Roger Gould with him.
00:54:08England did tremendous work
00:54:10to even get that far.
00:54:12When Harding came out of that scrum
00:54:14there was only two men in the back line.
00:54:16Fortunately for England,
00:54:18one of them was Underwood.
00:54:27We'll see it again.
00:54:29Underwood gets away from Australian Ford.
00:54:31Peter Grigg.
00:54:33I thought he had him covered.
00:54:35He dived in desperation.
00:54:37Unfortunately Underwood,
00:54:39a very powerful runner,
00:54:41got out of the tackle.
00:54:43Sims in close support.
00:54:45Two Australians, Farge and Tyman
00:54:47really made sure that it wasn't a try.
00:54:57So 10 metres out from the goal line.
00:54:59Paul Rendall.
00:55:01A 33-year-old engineer
00:55:03from London Wasps.
00:55:05He gained his first cap
00:55:07against Wales at the age of 30.
00:55:09He's one of five players
00:55:11from the Wasps club
00:55:13in the England line-up.
00:55:15He's a very good player.
00:55:17He's a very good player.
00:55:19He's a very good player.
00:55:21He's a very good player.
00:55:23He's a very good player.
00:55:24We'll see it again at the line-up.
00:55:34The referee again ruling
00:55:36with England offside at the line-up.
00:55:42Pendley's now 12-5,
00:55:44Australia's way.
00:55:4913 minutes of play gone in the second half.
00:55:51Rory Underwood.
00:55:52by 10 to 6. Underwood follows. Cutler underneath. Gould pushes him out of the way. Far Jones
00:56:00saves the day. Again, lack of communication with the Australian side. I think at least
00:56:06three players went up for that ball. Unfortunately, Far Jones was behind to clean up.
00:56:22Far Jones on his own at the back. Liner. Charged down by Moore. This is Papworth. Papworth
00:56:34from inside. He's 22. Takes play back up towards halfway. Brian Moore now. It's as though he's
00:56:45requiring attention. He captained England B in their win over Italy. But again, the
00:56:51Australians are a little slow to react. The England squad has been trained by the former
00:57:05Olympic track and field coach, Tom McNabb. He claims that their hookers are as fast as
00:57:12the halfbacks over 30 metres. Peter Wimmerbottom. Campbell comes away. Australia have it now.
00:57:24Papworth. Back to Poitibon. This is Lawton, the hooker. Far Jones. Gets around Moore. Grigg.
00:57:36Australia probing. 35 metres out. Far Jones again. Short side. Richards the tackler. Lawton.
00:57:43Tommy Lawton out on the ball. Well, maybe Tommy got carried away with a kick he did in the first
00:57:52half. But under no circumstances should hookers kick the ball. And he's better suited to keep
00:57:58control by putting his head down and using his weight. Lawton just shaking his head after that
00:58:05last kick. Michael Liner. Cut out to Slack. Now it's Campisi. He's wanting to stretch his legs.
00:58:19He's around Harrison. 22 metre line. Cut out past that time by the Australians to get the ball to
00:58:32their left wing. 15 minutes of play gone. Second half. Australia leading England by 10 points to
00:58:42six. Redman doing well at the front. Offside Australia. Australia last met England at
00:59:01Twickenham. It was the first match of the Grand Slam Tour in 1984. And victory to the Australians
00:59:09by 19 points to three. That's their biggest margin ever over England. That's the halfway line.
00:59:22Steve Cutler. Supported by his teammates. Rodriguez slipped it back. Liner's caught.
00:59:35Nigel Redman again. A very impressive worker in the tight for England. Well cleared by Cutler.
00:59:48This is little Papworth. Shoulder charge. Dangerous tackle. Punches flying. Penalty Australia.
01:00:04Look at this here. Winner bottom absolutely flattens Papworth with a shoulder charge. I
01:00:11don't think it was that that high. Papworth just hopped off the ground. It didn't hurt him too much.
01:00:17To try and look at it again. Papworth steps in. Winner bottom comes low and drives into him.
01:00:30Well perhaps a winner bottom a little unlucky with that tackle. Certainly he tried to put his
01:00:35arm around the body of Brett Papworth. But now Liner with a chance to put Australia seven points
01:00:45ahead. Papworth missed the test against Korea with a lower back injury. But he's showing no
01:00:56effects of that this afternoon. 45 meters out for Liner. 15 in from touch. He's missed five.
01:01:4522 meter line. So repeating that a try to the England captain Mike Harrison after six and a
01:02:03half minutes. Converted by Webb from touch. Making up their six points. Campesia try for Australia.
01:02:10One that he really didn't get down on the ground. Liner two penalty goals. Australia 10-6 and Peter
01:02:17Grigg for the line. What a tackle it was by Williams. Can Australia score? They have. Number two.
01:02:25And no doubt about that one going over the goal line. It's the second tallest man on the field.
01:02:4040 second test match for Simon Poitavon. What a magnificent run by Peter Grigg. You see how he hits
01:02:47that ball. Going dead straight as he did against Korea last week. Magnificent tackle by Williams.
01:02:51Just pulled him down a couple of meters out. Simon Poitavon ever on the ball. Really powered his way
01:02:56over that line. A great try for Australia. We'll see it again. Bill gets that wide pass. Peter Grigg
01:03:01runs dead straight. That's the best way to do it. Straight for the line. Williams came from behind.
01:03:06Just pulled down Grigg one or two meters out. Simon Poitavon was the first Australian player to
01:03:11the ball. Picked it up. The line was in front of him. Wrestled with Sims and scored the try.
01:03:15So what a moment for Simon Poitavon. His fifth try in a test match. The day he equals Peter
01:03:24Johnson's Australian record of 42 internationals. And that could be the try that puts Australia out
01:03:32of sight. Michael Liner. Australia now with a 10 point lead.
01:04:02Well if there's been a turning point in the game it was the Campisi try. Really seemed to take the
01:04:18stuffing out of the England side. Lawton throws his opposite number out of the way.
01:04:4710 metre line.
01:05:17Now he goes back the open side. Knock on there by Australia. Referee's playing the advantage. Roger
01:05:37Gould. Peter Grigg. Where's the support? Liner. McIntyre in to touch. 10 metres out.
01:05:47Well good play by the Australian backs. First Peter Grigg again running nice and straight. Roger
01:05:54Gould and then Michael Liner. Combining well with Andy McIntyre. Good work Australia. There's a bit
01:06:02of feeling in this game certainly. Australia really starting to turn on the power. Barging
01:06:14in the line out by the Australians. Well here in Sydney we've received quite a few phone calls
01:06:19apparently about the David Campisi try. Viewers suggesting that the ball came off an Englishman's
01:06:25leg and Michael Liner in fact scored the try. Well we both disagree here at Concord because
01:06:31the referee awarded the try where Campisi scored it not where Liner scored it which was just a
01:06:36metre in from the corner post. It seemed quite clear to us that Campisi lost the ball ahead as
01:06:45it was jolted clear. Cutler slipping it back. England offside. Frustration from them. Poitavan
01:07:00wants it. 16 points to 6. 17 minutes remaining and Liner now with a chance to make it 19-6.
01:07:10The Australian forwards are gradually getting on top now as I expected in the last 20 minutes of
01:07:16the game. They're going for it all the time. The back's hitting the ball a lot harder particularly
01:07:20Roger Gould and Peter Grigg. Michael Liner has scored 23 points in Australian record,
01:07:38three times in a Test match against Canada, Argentina and France. Product of St. Joseph's
01:07:46Gregory College. He looks as though he's going to be close. 19-6 and Australia is surely home
01:08:03now with 15 minutes to go. Well the expression on Martin Green's face certainly tells the story
01:08:18doesn't it. Three penalty goals by Liner, one conversion. 11 points for him. Richard
01:08:43Harding the halfback. Richard supports. A tireless worker for England. Harding has it. He's
01:08:53trying to burrow through like a little rabbit. Winterbottom calling his forwards to join him.
01:08:58Expert control here from England. Williams, Sims, Salmon. Quick hands to Webb. Harrison's with him.
01:09:08The England skipper with one man to beat. Five metres from the corner post. Almost scoring his
01:09:18second try. William's backs certainly look a lot better than the Australian backs when they stand
01:09:27nice and wide and throw that ball out. They've had the extra man coming in all the time. Webb
01:09:31has done a tremendous job and Harrison is looking dangerous again. Australia are a man down with
01:09:38McIntyre walking around very gingerly. We'll see the English back line. Niced out nice and deep.
01:10:00Playing a little bit across the field but they add the numbers. Webb comes in, straightens up. Peter
01:10:05Gregg doing the right thing. Coming across and covering. I don't know where Campisi was but
01:10:09Harrison went straight past him and only a bad kick really stopped a threat for Australia.
01:10:13And concern now in the England camp also with Mike Harrison. Certainly in the knee area.
01:10:26And that certainly would be a tragic blow if he has to leave the field.
01:10:35How do you read that one Mark? Well it's an enormous pain. He's got his both hands to his head.
01:10:39He can't believe the pain. Every time the physio actually touches his leg he grimaces in pain and
01:10:46it'll be unfortunate with Marcus Rose already off the field apparently with concussion. Already
01:10:52gone to hospital for observation. We'll try and see what happened here. The kick went, he went
01:10:59after the ball and maybe twisted the ball. We'll try and see. He went straight down in his knee
01:11:05and he went, got mixed up with Michael Liner's legs. Yes he's really seemed to come down hard
01:11:13on that left knee in the tackle. So we could see another replacement in the England side.
01:11:29Rob Andrew is warming up and he's a man familiar to us here in Sydney.
01:11:37He played with the Gordon Club last year as their fly half.
01:11:59Mike Harrison is determined to stay on. He's been a very impressive leader of this England side this
01:12:05afternoon. Very skilful footballer. A serious car accident put him out of rugby for two seasons.
01:12:16But now England with a chance to bounce back. Two metres from the Australian goal line.
01:12:29It's eight metres out from the goal line.
01:12:49Australia with a 13 point advantage.
01:12:5113 and a half minutes to go. Winterbottom with Richards and Redmond.
01:13:06Long cut out pass here for Webb. Underwood's outside. Here's danger. Rory Underwood.
01:13:14Pass went to Gould. Bad luck for England. A try went begging.
01:13:22I don't think Rory Underwood can believe that England didn't score that try.
01:13:31Redmond at the back.
01:13:34There's Winterbottom going down for the loose ball again. Richards.
01:13:37Oh what a charge by the number eight.
01:13:39So the Englishmen have dived in over the top.
01:13:55Well look at this move here. It was a long pass cut out both the centres.
01:13:59And Webb going out wide. Underwood was with him. Roger Gould came across. Had Webb covered all the
01:14:05time. The pass inside. Underwood was there. Campisi and Leiner were both on the spot.
01:14:09And all we looked for was an English player. But Roger Gould took that ball and put it out for
01:14:13Australia. Well Australia muffed that penalty kick. This is Harrison. A diggy knee. Almost there for
01:14:26every second.
01:14:56Oh
01:15:09well there's a lot of
01:15:12energy sapping strength going into these scrums.
01:15:1912 minutes to go.
01:15:21England really straining.
01:15:28The number eight can pick it up for England.
01:15:33And they still have the scrum fee.
01:15:42Plenty of talking coming from the England forwards. One of them yelling out pick it up and let's go.
01:15:51When the scrum collapses the referee says stand up and we'll have it in again.
01:16:02Always a risk of injury in that situation.
01:16:09Australia leading 19-6. 10 minutes to go. Richards.
01:16:15Richards again. Far Jones was there. Harding has it. And he knocked the ball on.
01:16:31A little bad luck for England. Richards and Winnebottom were taking that ball up
01:16:35forward. And unfortunately Harding a little bit too anxious made the knock on.
01:16:40Nick Far Jones asking for the England side to straighten it up. Referee taking control.
01:16:59Gould gave himself plenty of room that time. He hasn't found touch. This is Harrison.
01:17:04Swerving run. He's beaten two tackles. Here they go. Underwood. Plenty of Australian
01:17:14yellow jerseys there. There's that man Winnebottom. He's had a fantastic game for England.
01:17:24Well we've seen this afternoon why Peter Winnebottom is so highly respected
01:17:30in Australia and New Zealand. He only came into the side as a late replacement.
01:17:34But he has been tireless as has that man Dean Richards.
01:17:40Here's Far Jones. Clever play from the halfback. Williams the tackler. Poydivan's there.
01:17:45Now it's Tyneman. The Australian back row. A team within a team. Peter Grigg to Campisi.
01:17:52Harrison. He threw the ball to him. I don't believe it. Harrison looking for his second
01:17:57try. Patworth across. He's got into touch. Try saving tackle by Brett Patworth.
01:18:10Well what a run. Harrison scooped away Campisi. Presented him with a gift ball.
01:18:15It looked as if Harrison was going to break for the corner. Here comes Patworth.
01:18:19Just pushing him out into touch. Magnificent effort. Heavy pressure coming from England.
01:18:27Australia has scored two tries for one. Campisi and Poydivan. Harrison for England.
01:18:41There's the line out ball Australia wanted.
01:18:46England offside.
01:18:51Ruck have formed. You must stay bound in that situation.
01:18:5835 meters up from the Australian goal line. 19.6 to score.
01:19:21Here's Richard Harding. He had a look round there. Simms to Salmon. Webb in again.
01:19:34Number seven Gary Reese. Winterbottom number six.
01:19:46Here's Gary Reese on the ground appealing to the referee.
01:19:49Thinking the feed may have gone the other way.
01:19:55But Australia looks to be safely through this first pool match.
01:20:0219 points to six. It's been a game of incident.
01:20:07Controversial try awarded to Australia after the scores have been locked at six all.
01:20:13He goes underwood again. Too much pace for Grigg. Bar Jones across. Winterbottom.
01:20:18Richard's inside. Harding taken. Gould the tackler. 10 meters out.
01:20:25And England's been penalized for going over the top. Silly play there by Dean Richards.
01:20:34Clearly infringed. And what should have been a potential
01:20:41What should have been a potential try scoring situation will see Australia relieved.
01:20:52Penalty's now 17-7 in favor of Australia.
01:21:10Margin remains at 13 points. Exactly five minutes remaining too.
01:21:21Quite even at the back. Unopposed. Reese coming through. Gould.
01:21:29And a knock on rule. Well I'm surprised at the Englishman. I thought they'd be really folding
01:21:33at this stage of the game. But instead they're coming on and it looks as if Australia are
01:21:37tiring before them.
01:21:45Lovely stepping from line at a point of it. They've opened them up here. Bar Jones.
01:21:51Slack was barreled. Tackle without the ball. Penalty.
01:21:59Well there was no doubt about that. Slack was hit in the back of the head by Sims before he
01:22:03took that ball.
01:22:14So here's the incident again. We'll see this. Slack was taking out before he even
01:22:18received the ball. Referee Lawrence had no hesitation in awarding Australia a penalty.
01:22:33So Andy Slack today leading Australia for the 15th time in a test match.
01:22:47I think he just sported a little smile to the ref to say he was okay but
01:22:52it certainly was a bone-jarring tackle. Slack now only one test behind one of our
01:22:59greatest ever captains John Tornett who led Australia on 16 occasions.
01:23:12Well this match has been played in the best traditions of Anglo-Australian contests.
01:23:29It was a very heavy knock. Sims hit him right in the back of the head and
01:23:33I think there may be a slight concussion.
01:23:48So the Australian captain soldier's on.
01:23:51Australia looking for one last effort here.
01:24:00But the England Rose certainly hasn't wilted this afternoon.
01:24:13Taken away by hooker Brian Moore.
01:24:21Michael Liner cut out to Gould and Campisi but the pass was charged down. Campisi follows.
01:24:42Rory Underwood. Isn't he a delight to watch. Look at the speed. 10 meters out from his own goal
01:24:50line to halfway. Sims. Last man there is Vic Bar-Jones. And what fabulous covering by the halfback.
01:25:00Sweeping movement from England. Well Rory Underwood again. Fantastic movement. Lucky
01:25:06enough for Australia. Roger Gould made sure he went well and truly over the sideline once he'd
01:25:10passed that ball to Sims. But now Roger Gould's down on the sideline. There appears to be something
01:25:16wrong with him. He's looking at the inside of his leg. Hopefully it won't be that sciatic nerve that
01:25:20we've come to know probably too well. Yes well this looks to be all around the groin region.
01:25:35Roger Gould this afternoon playing in his 25th test.
01:25:40But the mobility and fitness of this England side
01:25:44compared to 1984 Mark has really been a feature. Well it's astounding. They're running on
01:25:49stronger than Australia in this last quarter of the match. I thought Australia
01:25:52will well and truly be on top now. Okay they may be in points but you know they're doing it tough.
01:26:04England looking for their second try. Harding.
01:26:07Far Jones up the touchline. Webb in his first test match. Looks to be a little too deep. Gould.
01:26:24He seems to recover only reasonably.
01:26:28I think we'll see a quick tap and a pass to Michael Lyner.
01:26:44Whoops. Troy Coker. The big man. A good pass out to Grigg.
01:26:51Flicked up by Campbell to Coker again. Now Cutler's there.
01:26:54The two Australian second rowers in that movement. Tommy Lawton. Campbell mauling.
01:27:03The Australian forwards put it together.
01:27:08Gould. Grigg trips over the body on the ground. Now it's Rodriguez.
01:27:14England starting to look very tired. Slack.
01:27:19A wall of white jerseys. Now it's Far Jones. To Papworth. Little pappy. Look at him go.
01:27:32Peter Williams for England. Saving the day.
01:27:41Well it really has been a very entertaining test match.
01:27:45England have certainly had their chances but I suppose Australia have taken theirs. That's been
01:27:50the big difference. Well the pace of the game has been absolutely furious. I mean it's been one side
01:27:54and then another. Papworth, we haven't seen too much of Brett. He attempts to go front,
01:28:00goes down the sideline. Beats Durley. Decides to put the little chip over and again good covering
01:28:04by Williams saved England. It could have gone either way. Thank God for that. Now Rodriguez.
01:28:12Now Roger Gould seeing Dr Jeff Vanderfield. He's leaving the field and Stephen James coming on
01:28:20as a replacement for the second week in a row. He's still not allowed on the field.
01:28:32Liner looking for a field goal.
01:28:36Sailing just wide of the right hand upright. So Stephen James is going to come on in the last
01:28:42minute of the test match. He came on inside the last 10.
01:28:45His second cap and here he is on his home ground.
01:28:49Concord Oval. He plays for the Western Suburbs Club here in Sydney.
01:28:56There's the siren. Australia has won the game. The final score.
01:29:0519-6 at the moment.
01:29:06Kempisi. England players on the ground. That one's gone into the grandstand and there it is a 13-point
01:29:15victory for the Australians. They preserved their...
