00:00:00This is BBC Two in Wales. A very good morning to you on this Spring Bank holiday Monday.
00:00:14Today we begin our extensive World Cup rugby coverage with Wales versus Ireland, introduced by David Parry-Jones.
00:00:30At 30 o'clock Wellington, World Cup fever at boiling point.
00:00:59Wales and Ireland open their bids for the William Webb Ellis trophy.
00:01:04Good morning. The big match of Pool 2 for you to enjoy this morning with Wales out to reverse their Cardiff defeat of eight weeks ago and get their World Cup campaign off to a winning start.
00:01:14Your reward for getting up early on this Bank holiday Monday, the whole of the game.
00:01:18An unedited version which starts with a reminder of the two teams involved.
00:01:22Richard Moriarty leading Wales as he did in the Southern Hemisphere 12 months ago and he's one of five men who were not in the side beaten last month.
00:01:30Stuart Evans, Kevin Phillips and Gareth Roberts are back in the red pack and Paul Thorburn is at full back.
00:01:36The Irish side robbed cruelly of that fine flanker Nigel Carr who couldn't travel of course but his replacement, McGrath, an experienced old hand and there's a first cap in the front row for hooker Terence Kingston.
00:01:48Donald Lenehan is Ireland's World Cup captain.
00:01:51Well last time Wales played at Athletic Park in Wellington it was 18 years ago and on that occasion they beat Wellington by 14 points to 6.
00:01:59I wonder can they repeat that victory today?
00:02:01The referee is Australian Kerry Fitzgerald.
00:02:06And there's some risk to use the phrase it's likely to be a game of two halves but I think you know what I mean.
00:02:15In terms of the influence of the wind it could be just that.
00:02:19So it's Wales who will be hoping to contain Ireland and trust that their new look packs settle down and get into the groove.
00:02:31So all the build up, the training is over, it's now the action.
00:02:37Paul Dean.
00:02:41Adrian Hadley leaves it for Thorburn.
00:02:44And I hate to say we're a million miles up in the sky looking down on this as it's through a pair of binoculars the wrong way round.
00:02:52That's hoisted by Bradley.
00:02:54Cross comes Hadley.
00:02:56And the mark is called and given.
00:03:00Well it's never going to be an easy kick to touch from any position here.
00:03:11For Hadley it's midfield.
00:03:14Paul goes high and it's safely away and that's as good as he could have hoped for.
00:03:19Adrian Hadley 17th international.
00:03:22The game against Ireland when Guy and Evans switched across to the right and that's how they line up today.
00:03:32So Ireland call the first man line.
00:03:35Four man line.
00:03:36Lenehan and Anderson.
00:03:39At the back is Matthews.
00:03:43Wales have possession.
00:03:45Jones to Jonathan Davies.
00:03:49Hanging in the wind you can see Cross and over and McNeil too.
00:03:53As Guy and Evans chases it out.
00:03:5831 times cap now, it's full back for Ireland, Hugo McNeil.
00:04:02Jonathan Davies has ever likely to be a key figure in the outfield.
00:04:20Possession moved by Norster.
00:04:25But Ireland pull through.
00:04:28Possession goes to Norster only to be called back by the referees whistle.
00:04:33Stuart Evans there.
00:04:37Adding great strength to the pack.
00:04:4017th zone four, biggest man in the Wales side.
00:04:43Bradley with the feet.
00:04:49About 10 metres outside Wales 22.
00:04:52That signal is Barry Kingston, the new cap.
00:04:55But referee not happy that all is well with the binding.
00:04:58Comes across to Geoff Whiteford's side.
00:05:04Switched by Paul Dean.
00:05:06Looks inside to support where Spillane is.
00:05:10Well set up by the pack.
00:05:12Dean again.
00:05:15Chip and Chase, up comes Ringland.
00:05:18Hadley down on it.
00:05:20Support comes in from Matthews.
00:05:23Good possession again.
00:05:25Bradley collared though by Collins.
00:05:27On drive, Lennon.
00:05:30Good switch, Dean, Kiernan.
00:05:35And the knock on given.
00:05:38As Wales survive the Ireland pressure.
00:05:41Jonathan Davies.
00:05:43Far off the interception.
00:05:51Against Paul Kingston, Fitzgerald.
00:05:53Inside Wales 22.
00:06:01Free kick has been given.
00:06:07Scrummage unsteady.
00:06:12It's Thorburn.
00:06:15Placing the ball for the kicker's action.
00:06:22Take the away.
00:06:32Off against France.
00:06:35The championship season has gone forward.
00:06:38He took over.
00:06:41Throw by Kingston.
00:06:43Goes down to Jones, Davies.
00:06:46There's Ring.
00:06:49Drive on by Kevin Phillips.
00:06:56Davies again.
00:06:59Bounds off the Irish player and is in touch just inside the half.
00:07:03That was rebounding off Paul Dean.
00:07:08For the Ireland side.
00:07:10Trevor England.
00:07:12On Salamina, this was 27.
00:07:14International for 27-year-olds.
00:07:19So Terry Kingston, the Dolphin, the debutant.
00:07:22Good work from Anderson there.
00:07:25Hoisted by Dean.
00:07:27Out there is Yian Evans.
00:07:32Well played.
00:07:38Strong, powerful player.
00:07:41Who came into international honours
00:07:44at the start of his season.
00:07:47Sentiment.
00:07:55Taken on by Roberts.
00:07:58Good work by Richie Collins.
00:08:02Just about on the Irish 10-metre line.
00:08:08Paul Dean.
00:08:13See how the wind's taken that one
00:08:16and rendered it harmless.
00:08:19He's got the ball.
00:08:22He's got the ball.
00:08:25He's got the ball.
00:08:29And rendered it harmless.
00:08:32Davies.
00:08:35Davies.
00:08:59Rebounding off Moriarty.
00:09:02Salamina was turned.
00:09:07Referee had been playing advantage
00:09:10for the initial knock-on.
00:09:13Duncan came Ireland's way
00:09:16so they'll have to put it to the stop.
00:09:33Scrappy ball again.
00:09:36Just a few signs of the tension of the occasion.
00:10:02Robert Jones inside to Moriarty.
00:10:08Paul Moriarty did well then.
00:10:11Davies again.
00:10:14Yian Evans.
00:10:17In comes McNeil with the tackle.
00:10:20And in touch.
00:10:23Just beyond the halfway line.
00:10:33So Wales have the throne.
00:10:36Number 4, Richard Moriarty,
00:10:39the Welsh skipper.
00:10:425 is Robert Norster.
00:10:45And 8, Paul Moriarty, one from the back.
00:10:48And TU takes it.
00:10:51Beautifully away by Jones to Davies.
00:10:54And here goes Devereux again.
00:10:57Good possession, Jonathan Davies.
00:11:01But doesn't make the clearance.
00:11:04Jones
00:11:07sets up on the counter-attack.
00:11:10Finds support from Norster
00:11:13but it's knocked on.
00:11:16So Wales
00:11:19showing a willingness to
00:11:22run the ball but
00:11:25now in defences.
00:11:28Arland Heal on their own 10m line.
00:11:31Up from Bradley, Dean.
00:11:34That's a cleverly placed ball
00:11:37using the wind well and that's shown by
00:11:40Devereux.
00:11:43That's a cleverly placed ball using the wind well
00:11:46and that surely must be the tactic for Arland
00:11:49with the gale behind them.
00:11:56Paul Dean has had his injury troubles this season
00:11:59but has come through successfully
00:12:02and now puts Arland inside the Wales 22.
00:12:05We're 10 minutes played of this first half and no score
00:12:08here at Athletic Park Wellington
00:12:12A good crowd, some 20,000
00:12:15and already having shown their own favours
00:12:18as Arland attack again through Kiernan.
00:12:21Ringland have come in, going under the post but it's
00:12:24all called back for a knock-on.
00:12:35In the meantime players stop for
00:12:38an injury to a Welsh player on the far side.
00:12:51A man who's been the principal try-scorer and indeed
00:12:54has the particular
00:12:57record for this match of four tries against Wales.
00:13:09Moriarty
00:13:12requiring attention.
00:13:15That's the younger one, number 8 Paul
00:13:18who's just 22.
00:13:21He's all right. The scrummage Wales put in on their 22.
00:13:30Channels for Jones. Davies with the clearance.
00:13:38Robinson
00:13:41for the Welsh team in this half
00:13:44looking into the sun
00:13:47all the elements against them.
00:13:54Scurries into touch off the boot of
00:13:57Michael Bradley.
00:14:08Game over.
00:14:1171.
00:14:14The Welsh team
00:14:17really going through a stepping in phase.
00:14:20It's a while of course since they've had international action
00:14:23and inevitably
00:14:26the game itself remote
00:14:29from the training paddock
00:14:32however involved and opposed
00:14:35the training sessions may have been.
00:14:48The player injured came from
00:14:51involvement here as Collins goes through.
00:14:57I think he just caught a boot there as Wales drove over.
00:15:00Philip Matthews, number 6.
00:15:05Moriarty
00:15:08younger
00:15:11number 8 for this match.
00:15:27You can see the main stand on the far side
00:15:30is pretty much
00:15:34well full.
00:15:37This has been a characteristic of these early games of the World Cup
00:15:40with good crowds at all the venues.
00:15:47Just about on Wales'
00:15:5010 metre line.
00:15:53Jones stands off. Moriarty with the feed.
00:15:56Jones now puts the dummy out to Ian Evans
00:15:59inside is Collins
00:16:02and Islander offside.
00:16:05Penalty to Wales
00:16:08but of course no chance of a kicker's goal from this position
00:16:11though it may be that the goal kickers
00:16:14may try from that sort of distance
00:16:17when kicking in the other direction.
00:16:22That ball from Jones through to Stuart Evans.
00:16:25Well back to Jones again.
00:16:28Moriarty
00:16:31player to set it up again.
00:16:34Good Welsh support again.
00:16:36Jones, Jonathan Davies
00:16:38look to switch to the open side.
00:16:41Ringland
00:16:44still not in touch. Hadley
00:16:47now it's Devereux.
00:16:50Good play. Devereux still.
00:16:53Racing back is Paul Dean.
00:16:56Devereux challenges.
00:16:59Good work by John Devereux
00:17:02playing in his 11th consecutive international
00:17:05this 21 year old from
00:17:08South Glamorgan Institute.
00:17:14So Wales have fought their way up into Ireland's 22
00:17:17and opting for the two man line.
00:17:20Northshire at the front as Kevin Phillips
00:17:23goes in.
00:17:26Moriarty has it.
00:17:29And now it's Phillips.
00:17:32Trying to find Jones.
00:17:35Whitefoot.
00:17:38Referee's whistle has already gone.
00:17:41Jeff Whitefoot.
00:17:44It's merged by Ireland's back.
00:17:47Paul Dean.
00:17:50Thorburn waits.
00:17:53He's got plenty of room to set up the counter attack.
00:17:56Looks for support.
00:17:59That should give Bradley plenty of time.
00:18:02Has the wind behind him but again
00:18:05the mistake is made. The touch not found.
00:18:08Mark Ring.
00:18:11Thinks about running it.
00:18:14Angles it cross field. It could be dangerous here with Crossen
00:18:17setting it up to McNeil.
00:18:20Drive on by Spillane. Crossen again.
00:18:23Plenty of men outside.
00:18:26Brendan Mullen.
00:18:29And that's passed after the tackle.
00:18:32Brendan Mullen.
00:18:35Brendan Mullen.
00:18:43And the signs clearly of the problems of finding touch
00:18:46for both teams
00:18:49in these conditions.
00:18:52But not so from Jonathan Davies who puts it safely away
00:18:55just inside Ireland's half.
00:18:58200.
00:19:01200.
00:19:05It's going to be Bob.
00:19:10Here goes Paul Moriarty.
00:19:13Inside is Phillips.
00:19:16Good support from the Welsh pack up to the Ireland's 22.
00:19:19And out it fires to Jonathan Davies.
00:19:22Covering is McNeil.
00:19:25Desperate problems with Spillane in support and that's not in touch.
00:19:28It's Hadley now. Over the 22.
00:19:31and just in touch as McGrath came across with Michael Kiernan there.
00:19:39There's Derek McGrath, number 7, just out of picture now, who's been recalled in his first
00:19:46gap against Scotland three years ago. Bradley just in the walls momentarily
00:19:53and again good work by Adrian Hadley.
00:20:01Michael Bradley, a product of Presentation Brothers College Cork, like Michael Kiernan.
00:20:17And some words from Jonathan Davies.
00:20:23As Wales begin to make their presence felt and certainly dominated the last few minutes.
00:20:36Good drives from the line-out, good support play.
00:20:42And by June the 20th we'll know which name will be the first to be inscribed on that beautiful cup.
00:20:57Bradley looking just a little bit affected.
00:21:09And the tension there was too for Geoff Whitefoot.
00:21:16The back of the line-out, Ireland throw in to Kingston.
00:21:2115 metres out from Ireland's goal line.
00:21:26Bradley.
00:21:30Good clearance.
00:21:55Stuart Evans coming round for the peel but it's broken down and loose.
00:22:01Corbyn was the link man and Jonathan Davies now to mark ring.
00:22:05Lovely dummy to Hadley, it's ring still, goes for the second dummy,
00:22:08there's plenty of support, Robert Jones, but the pass was forward.
00:22:15Superb build-up by Wales and excellent running again.
00:22:21And it's Bradley once more who's in the wars.
00:22:26Wales building up well, looking confident and running it at Ireland.
00:22:38Midway through this first half and it's Wales who are calling the tune at the moment
00:22:45and Jonathan Davies dictating terms to his team.
00:22:55And no doubt the young fly half well pleased with the forward momentum and drive that's providing him with good possession.
00:23:04Well you've got a glimpse of the towering stands and we're right at the very top of that terrace stand
00:23:12which is somewhere up amongst the clouds it would seem.
00:23:18Still inside Ireland's 22.
00:23:25There's Fitzgerald on this near side.
00:23:29There's Geoff Whiteford.
00:23:31The old warrior Phil Orr, his 56th international.
00:23:36He's opposite Stuart Evans.
00:23:40Referee over to this near side to check what's going on.
00:23:43And he has penalised Wales as the scrummage collapses.
00:23:47Whiteford not altogether happy about that decision as you can see.
00:23:57Kiernan makes good ground.
00:24:14Michael Kiernan.
00:24:18His kick puts the line out just inside Wales' half.
00:24:2122 minutes gone and no scorers yet.
00:24:27Collins at the tail, knocks on, so referee waits for advantage, none comes.
00:24:34And a little bit of friendly confrontation between Colonel Lenehan and Richard Moriarty.
00:24:43Two rival captains both in the second row.
00:24:50Halfway line.
00:24:52Off goes Spillane.
00:24:54Bradley's chip through.
00:24:55Thorburn covers.
00:24:58And that's just about four metres from his own line.
00:25:08So here's Ireland's first real chance to set up a platform for the attack within striking distance.
00:25:19So Spillane from Dolphin and Monmouth to Terry Kingston with the throw.
00:25:23From Bradley to Dean.
00:25:25Mullins, good tackle comes in from Ring, in front of the post.
00:25:31Wales have possession, Davies with the clearance.
00:25:35That's well away.
00:25:44Then you can hear him exhorting his troops.
00:25:55The line out forms just in front of quite a large posse of Welsh supporters as Wales run it again.
00:26:01Devereux beats one tackle, gets away from the second, Thorburn in support.
00:26:06Collins, Dalhadley.
00:26:10Moriarty, second row for Jones.
00:26:13That's from Devereux, now Jonathan Davies.
00:26:16Thorburn was in the line, Dean quickly in with the tackle, Davies in support.
00:26:23Wales have contrived an extra man or two into their three-quarter line then with a menacing attack.
00:26:38The mastermind, Jonathan Davies, just checking on his opposite number, Paul Dean, who's requiring attention.
00:26:49The ground's in excellent condition so there are real dangers of injuries through collision with the surface.
00:27:04So Doran comes on as the team physio and a role he's fulfilled for some 17 years for Ireland.
00:27:23The official match ball which is in use at all World Cup games.
00:27:31Moriarty short of Wales' ten-metre line.
00:27:52Moriarty to Robert Jones, Collins almost behind Evans to make it difficult and in touch on the halfway.
00:28:18Beautiful one but again the wind's just making it that couple of metres too far as Evans deals with it well.
00:28:36Ireland's throw, five metres outside Wales' 22.
00:28:39That was down by Lederhulme.
00:28:41Dean with Fillore on the charge.
00:28:45Sets it up for his pack and there's a good switch of direction.
00:28:48Mullin, Dean, Crossland outside.
00:28:50This is McNeil, pops it, hopefully inside.
00:28:53It's still loose, five metres out but the ball travels forward.
00:28:57And it's Ireland who now do the pressing.
00:29:05And it only needed a man racing up to get the inside pass for a certain Ireland score but no one on hand.
00:29:15Robert Jones.
00:29:29Now Brevers are low tech.
00:29:33These players have a pretty ferocious pace.
00:29:41And we're about 27 minutes into this first half.
00:29:45Neither side has yet struck the points on the board.
00:29:59Lennon that is, who's taking part of the break for a quick few words to his pack.
00:30:13I saw Matthews I think requiring some attention over by the far touch line.
00:30:18He's restored.
00:30:20And the scrummage is about 10 metres from Wales' goal line.
00:30:23Wales with the fee too.
00:30:29Robert Jones.
00:30:31And you can see the Welsh pack is in real trouble now.
00:30:35The great Irish shove that was.
00:30:38Jones though gets the break away.
00:30:42And Jones again.
00:30:45That looked a significant moment for Ireland and will have given their pack great confidence.
00:30:53They really startled Wales then and pushed them right back.
00:31:10Ireland get the fee.
00:31:16Wales poised to come beyond the outside centre but they've gone to the narrow side with Bradley.
00:31:21Good tackle coming in from Paul Moriarty.
00:31:31Paul Moriarty.
00:31:34Drive on by Fitzgerald.
00:31:43Bradley.
00:31:44Dean.
00:31:46Has a go himself.
00:31:47Gets support on the inside from Spillane.
00:31:51Picked up though by Gareth Roberts.
00:31:54Jones now.
00:31:56Devereux.
00:31:59That's not in touch though into this wind.
00:32:02Keith Crossan.
00:32:07Pick up though by Mullen.
00:32:09Mullen now to McGrath.
00:32:11McGrath still inside the 22 again.
00:32:14Touch flag is up.
00:32:27So Ireland with quite a comeback here but still denied scores and with half an hour gone of this first half that will encourage Wales but less so will this injury to Jonathan Davies.
00:32:55A little worries here with the key man in the number 10 jersey.
00:33:04The worst possible injury if he is in real trouble.
00:33:13It looks as though it's still fairly mobile that shoulder but maybe just a bad knock.
00:33:24Good support here.
00:33:32Wales continue to weather the storm.
00:33:34Inside there, 22.
00:33:40That was back from Anderson.
00:33:47Ball gone loose but already the whistle has gone.
00:33:53Ireland edging forward.
00:33:54They get the advantage of the put in.
00:33:57It's all important in this sort of position especially.
00:34:03In the last set piece we saw what Ireland did to the Welsh scrummage.
00:34:12So about 18 metres out from the Welsh line.
00:34:14Still no score.
00:34:15About 8 minutes of this half to go.
00:34:17But it's a penalty to Wales as the scrummage caves in.
00:34:23Ireland penalised for dropping it.
00:34:32Jonathan Davies.
00:34:39Just making it certain.
00:34:42All one can hope to do.
00:34:45Phillip Matthews is the player talking to the doctor.
00:34:48Mick Malloy.
00:34:50He's just gone off the side there for attention.
00:35:07Matthews is back on the field.
00:35:14We saw earlier that this injury got to somewhere around the pelvic area.
00:35:19Robert Jones in some bother but Bradley's offside.
00:35:34So it's still stalemate.
00:35:36But in a sense that really is advantageous to Wales.
00:35:42It is they who had to play into this gale force win for these first 35 minutes.
00:35:55Just short of the halfway.
00:36:04At the front is Lenehan.
00:36:07Went in front of Dean but nevertheless worked well for Mullen.
00:36:12Still there.
00:36:14From Bradley again.
00:36:16From Kiernan out to Ringland.
00:36:18Ringland against Sorbonne.
00:36:22Harish Packer there in good strength.
00:36:24Picked up by McGrath.
00:36:26Lenehan trying to dig it out with him.
00:36:29There for Bradley.
00:36:31Bradley looking for a gap here.
00:36:33That worked well.
00:36:34Mullen is under but he's called back.
00:36:39Clean through and under the post would he have been had not the pass.
00:36:45Been adjudged I think marginally forward.
00:36:49In the meantime Paul Sorbonne is injured.
00:36:53Well it would be nice to see that again because it looks as though Bradley played it well.
00:36:57Here we see it.
00:36:59Ringland is coming into Paul Sorbonne.
00:37:03Sorbonne clinging to his man but you can see how Ringland still managed to get the ball away.
00:37:14This is where the Sorbonne injury occurred.
00:37:29A rare moment here for Wales full back.
00:37:46In the meantime on the far side it's Philip Matthews who's actually left the field for attention.
00:37:56So while Sorbonne looks set to resume.
00:38:00Philip Matthews is escorted by Dr. McMulloy to the dressing room.
00:38:13So Sorbonne's fit to continue but Matthews off the field to add to Harlan's problems of recent times.
00:38:20Notably of course the absence of Nigel Carr.
00:38:24As Jim Glennon looks set to come on.
00:38:26Jim Glennon second row forward is called on for his sixth international.
00:38:31The six foot four sixteen and a half stone second row forward.
00:38:36Which will I'm sure put Willie Anderson back to a position he's played in before and that's at number eight.
00:38:43So added weight to the pack but maybe just a touch less mobility.
00:38:50And restructuring of the side at this stage is nothing one would want.
00:38:56Away by Jonathan Daly.
00:39:07Willie Anderson who played number eight.
00:39:11There's Lenahan waiting.
00:39:15Lenahan getting it away.
00:39:17Coming through to Kiernan now.
00:39:20McGrath in support.
00:39:36And that's how it stands with just about three minutes of this half to go.
00:39:50Which really represents good news for Wales.
00:39:53Not having conceded the score.
00:40:01The fourth most capped player in the history of world rugby.
00:40:06Making his presence felt on that far side of the scrummage.
00:40:09Jones through to Davies.
00:40:11Across comes McNeil.
00:40:13Well judged.
00:40:16And that eases the pressure on Wales who spent the last quarter of an hour mostly in their own half.
00:40:25Jonathan Davies looking fairly composed.
00:40:27Quite unconcerned.
00:40:43Jonathan Davies ring.
00:40:45Collared by Spillane.
00:40:48But on goes Roberts.
00:40:50Support from Collins.
00:40:51Jones.
00:40:53For Hadley to chase.
00:40:58So building right up to within five metres of Ireland's goal line.
00:41:07And you can perhaps hear the Welsh supporters with their chants of Wales.
00:41:12The familiar ring of Cardiff Arms Park.
00:41:14But this is the other side of the world now.
00:41:17But plenty of Welsh voices to the fore.
00:41:20Many on the supporters' cause and of course local residents with Welsh interests at heart.
00:41:25Lenehan on the drive.
00:41:27Bradley.
00:41:29Dean's clearance.
00:41:30It's safe.
00:41:43That's our player who's had five internationals as a centre.
00:41:49Here's Willie Anderson with the headband and Moriarty.
00:41:55Bunt jumper.
00:41:57It was Norstra in the middle though that got that one.
00:41:59Jonathan Davies looks for the drop goal.
00:42:00It's charged down by McGrath.
00:42:02McGrath hacks on.
00:42:03Cross and misses.
00:42:05McGrath on the follow-up.
00:42:07Gets it away from the iron Evans who's looking to be injured.
00:42:12Set back again by the Irish back.
00:42:14Chipped through by Bradley.
00:42:15Cross and chases.
00:42:16Jones covers.
00:42:19The iron Evans in the meantime is still injured on the halfway line.
00:42:28As courteously as ever, Hugo McNeill calls for attention.
00:42:53The Irish support came in and I think he may have felt the knee or boot maybe of, accidentally I add, of Derek McGrath.
00:43:08And here's a player of great potential, the iron Evans.
00:43:11Twenty-three-year-old.
00:43:13Product of St Elizabeth Grammar School, Carmarthen.
00:43:18Went and became such as Gerald Davies of course.
00:43:21That's a man who's had problems with dislocated shoulder injuries but looks as though he's all right now.
00:43:28As Arland waits for the line-out.
00:43:31Just those couple of metres inside Wales 22.
00:43:35Four-man line called.
00:43:38Lennon and Anderson in the middle by Moriarty and Norstra.
00:43:42Paul Moriarty at the front against Lennon.
00:43:44At the back it's Collins.
00:43:48Rather untidy ball that's got Wales in trouble.
00:43:51And surely offside by Stuart Evans.
00:43:55Penalty is given.
00:44:01And that's after what, 42 minutes almost played of this first half will be the first kicker goal for either side in this match.
00:44:12In the birdie sight of Stuart Evans as the man caught and playing the ball in the offside position.
00:44:21So apart from the one speculative drop goal attempt by Jonathan Davies, quite remarkably this is the first penalty goal attempt by either side.
00:44:30And it comes virtually I'd say on the stroke of half-time.
00:44:33And Arland really is a side in desperate need of points, knowing they've got to face the wind for the next 40 minutes.
00:44:46So it's Michael Kiernan, 143 points in international rugby.
00:44:53Penalty to Conversels against Wales in the last encounter.
00:44:573-0 to Arland.
00:45:01Two and a half minutes of injury time gone.
00:45:04And at last the stalemate is broken.
00:45:08With the delight of many Irish supporters down there.
00:45:33Three points but I think at this stage Wales will not worry unduly about that margin.
00:45:39Confidently expecting better things when they change ends and they've certainly contained Arland well.
00:45:44Offside and in fact one or two players.
00:45:49Words by Jeff Whitefoot I think.
00:45:52There's a bit of back chat to the referee at 10 metres.
00:45:54It's quickly taken by Bradley.
00:45:56The drive on by McGrath.
00:45:58Bradley again.
00:45:59Kiernan looks for a gap.
00:46:01It closes on him.
00:46:04Back from Anderson.
00:46:06Fitzgerald setting it up this time.
00:46:09Bradley once more.
00:46:10Dean.
00:46:11Dean through.
00:46:12Good break but a hand in the way.
00:46:14Surely a deliberate knock on a judge.
00:46:16Accidentally though is decided by the referee Fitzgerald.
00:46:26And a knock on that certainly saved Wales a dangerous situation.
00:46:33Four minutes of injury time now played.
00:46:38And that is I think well the man injured is Brian Spillane.
00:46:47But you can see how close Arland were here.
00:46:49It's a lovely run by Dean.
00:46:50And then the diving attempted interception by John Devereux was what saved the day.
00:46:56I think he may have been just a shade fortunate not to have been penalised.
00:47:02Scrummaged it is.
00:47:03Wales 10 metre line.
00:47:09Bradley.
00:47:10Dean.
00:47:11This time Hoyt sits the real Irish galleo in on Thorburn.
00:47:16Calls and gets the mark.
00:47:19Good call.
00:47:20Good catch.
00:47:34Former fly half.
00:47:37Very successful full back puts the ball out.
00:47:40And out of immediate danger for Wales.
00:47:43Five minutes into injury time.
00:47:463-0 Arland lead.
00:47:52The call you may have caught was I think Sunday's well for Terry Kingston.
00:47:58It's well down by Lenehan.
00:47:59Dean.
00:48:01Kiernan.
00:48:02Long feed through to Crossan.
00:48:04McNeill looming outside.
00:48:05The tackle is high by Devereux.
00:48:08That means it's well within range for Michael Kiernan.
00:48:16So this time Devereux penalised as he went high on Keith Crossan who had McNeill looming outside.
00:48:30Well we can see now.
00:48:31There was Crossan.
00:48:32You can see McNeill.
00:48:33And there was Devereux around the head.
00:48:44From Devereux.
00:48:48Comes out is Redbeard.
00:48:50Thomas Audrey.
00:48:57Now Michael Kiernan.
00:49:01With six and a half minutes of injury time gone.
00:49:04Bidding to make it a 6-0 lead at the break.
00:49:09Well struck.
00:49:13No problems with the distance.
00:49:15Strong wind of course.
00:49:17Straight behind Arland.
00:49:20And seven minutes now of injury time played.
00:49:24And it's Arland six Wales nil.
00:49:39He's stopped by Thorbett.
00:49:42Spillane took it well.
00:49:43Held by Collins.
00:49:48And Mullen set to come but the referee spotted infringement.
00:49:54Wales put in.
00:49:57The ball must have gone forward from Spillane in the tackle.
00:50:01Spillane now of course on the flank.
00:50:04Anderson at number eight.
00:50:09With Matthews off the field replaced by Glennon.
00:50:13Kicked through by Bradley.
00:50:15In some trouble.
00:50:16Bradley still.
00:50:17Back goes Hadley now into the 22.
00:50:25And still injury time is being played.
00:50:30And Arland have a further chance from this position about 18 metres out.
00:50:39With two balls in play hence the hold up.
00:50:44So the 23-year-old.
00:50:48This is Moriarty.
00:50:50Two in the line.
00:50:51North two in the middle.
00:50:55But it's Paul, the younger Moriarty who rescued and won that one well.
00:51:02And Wales will be pleading for the halftime whistle.
00:51:05They have to wait no longer as the interval is blown for by referee Kerry Fitzgerald.
00:51:11And that's how it stands with Arland not really fully taking advantage of the elements in this half.
00:51:17And will be slightly worried I'm sure that it's only 6-0 at halftime.
00:51:21And indeed Nigel Starmer-Smith having emphasised throughout the strength of the wind.
00:51:26And I suggest 6-0 not too forbidding a deficit for a Welsh team who seem to be getting slowly on top.
00:51:32Certainly up front they're scrummaging comfortably and they look very ball hungry on the ground.
00:51:36But doubtless at halftime I reckon that Dick Moriarty and probably Jonathan Davies
00:51:39will have asked for a little more accurate handling.
00:51:42So that Wales can begin to finish these very promising moves that they keep setting up.
00:51:47Let's go back now then to Athletic Park at Wellington.
00:51:50Join Nigel Starmer-Smith again.
00:51:51See if Wales can dig themselves out of trouble.
00:51:54But we're still set to see a gale force wind blowing behind Wales in this second half.
00:52:02That I sense may be all important.
00:52:05We shall see.
00:52:08Here is the restarted Robert Jones.
00:52:11Davies just glides across to make room for himself.
00:52:15And that's a tactic which I felt was somewhat underemployed by Ireland
00:52:20who might have made greater use of the touchline and kicked more for position
00:52:28to pin themselves deep into the Welsh half.
00:52:32Robert Norster.
00:52:35His third cap today.
00:52:37But it's Anderson Lennon who got possession then.
00:52:40Dean from Kiernan.
00:52:42Dean still.
00:52:43Finds Willie Anderson.
00:52:45Offended on the halfway.
00:52:48And the ball went forward.
00:52:57His 56th appearance for the man wearing the number one jersey there.
00:53:02But it's Paul Dean, number 10, who's had a couple of knocks early in the first half
00:53:10and may still be feeling the same effect.
00:53:15Small of his back.
00:53:25And, of course, the particular significance of this game as one looks ahead on form
00:53:30would appear to be that whoever wins it looks set to avoid playing Australia
00:53:43in the quarterfinal.
00:53:46So the way England were playing, it would be no great difference one senses
00:53:50to be playing England at that stage.
00:53:52It's a likely outcome for whoever wins or who loses this match.
00:53:59The winner to play the runner-up in pool one.
00:54:03And the runner-up in this pool to play the winner of pool one.
00:54:07Sid Miller there, the manager.
00:54:09It's on.
00:54:10Suitably anxious.
00:54:13Delighted to say that Mick Doyle is looking on the worst for wear after his worries.
00:54:19Across goes Jonathan Davies on Brian Spillane.
00:54:25A fairway charge by the Welsh as Robert Jones now goes.
00:54:28Jones back to his pack.
00:54:30It's a drive by Whitefoot.
00:54:32Midfield just outside the 22.
00:54:34Jonathan Davies judged that one for the corner, but it's taken by McNeil.
00:54:40Only for Ireland to be penalised for offside.
00:54:43Head on to the post, and this could be Wales' first points.
00:54:51Bob Norster.
00:54:54Well, old campaigner one might say, but a key figure of 23 internationals.
00:55:13Paul Thorburn with his first kicker goal.
00:55:43To make it 6-3.
00:55:46No problem.
00:56:12So after four minutes, Wales quickly within three points.
00:56:23Norster was there first.
00:56:31Good work by Gareth Roberts.
00:56:33Support from Norster.
00:56:34Now from Richard Moriarty.
00:56:43Robert Jones.
00:56:45Sharp reverse pass to Jonathan Davies.
00:56:52That's a magnificent line kick.
00:56:58And Derek Quinnell with Tony Gray there, Wales' coach.
00:57:01Quinnell, assistant manager, and delighted with that superbly effective kick down the line by Davies.
00:57:29Evans has been penalised for a bit of stamping.
00:57:40Derek Quinnell has a chance to clear the trouble.
00:58:05Reflective bounce to land.
00:58:14Ireland looks to have it.
00:58:18Bradley.
00:58:22Wales have been penalised again on the wrong side.
00:58:32And it looks as though Gareth Roberts may be requiring a bit of attention.
00:58:37As well as one of the Irish players.
00:58:44Colonel Lenehan, it is the captain just a bit slow to get up, but he's alright.
00:58:47There's Richard Moriarty.
00:58:50Big chance of a pep talk.
00:58:56Perhaps a few words about not giving away penalties, which have obviously cost Ireland, or given Ireland, their two scoring chances, and Wales having conceded a couple of useful positions for the same reason.
00:59:15Nothing more than a matter of a new pair of shorts for Gareth Roberts.
00:59:20Kiernan places the ball for the touch kick.
00:59:45Kiernan waits.
00:59:48About 10 metres outside Wales 22.
00:59:51Deflection was by Anderson.
00:59:53Bradley, Dean, Kiernan, Ringland on the wide outside with McNeil in good support.
01:00:00Beautifully fed pass.
01:00:02And touched about 15 metres out.
01:00:05There's a lovely touch there from Trevor Ringland, who was being held in the tackle, but managed to just flick it on to McNeil, who had come up well in support.
01:00:19So that's close.
01:00:27Take-up by Moriarty, but the knock-on first was by Collins.
01:00:40Bradley, Dean, Mullins missed out straight through to Kiernan.
01:00:44Chipped through for Cross and to Chase.
01:00:46Evans has to turn, but Jones is the man to cover.
01:00:51And in any case, it's Ireland who have been adjudged offside.
01:01:01So the kick from five metres out.
01:01:07Jonathan Davies for the right-hand touchline.
01:01:11Big win behind him.
01:01:13But that can be the problem, to go for too much length and the direction not good.
01:01:18McNeil.
01:01:20Trying to scud one along into touch, but it's deflected by North to Jones.
01:01:24McNeil in with the tackle.
01:01:28Collin, Dean.
01:01:30Haunting.
01:01:32Through to Skilland.
01:01:38And again, it's Evans who's come through on the wrong side.
01:01:57McGregor, who's been missing.
01:02:02Stuart Evans, just a couple of times when he's been a bit over-eager and found himself on the wrong side.
01:02:09So Kiernan for touch.
01:02:12Only had to bang that hard just to make, what, 50 metres upfield.
01:02:19Some of the Irish contingent in good voice.
01:02:27Willie Anderson.
01:02:31Wales called, number 834.
01:02:38Well, that's favoured Ireland, an advantage being played as McGrath passes on to Skilland.
01:02:44Back to Bradley, Dean, the judge to knock on.
01:02:50Yes, you can hear what the crowd, certainly the Irish supporters thought of that.
01:02:58And it may just have been touched forward on the initial gathering in by Paul Dean.
01:03:10And Robert Norster.
01:03:13And there have been quite a few stoppages in this game. It's been total commitment from both sides.
01:03:20And inevitable clashes and minor injuries, I suppose, to be expected.
01:03:27Just the one player off for good, Philip Matthews.
01:03:37Support for Liverick.
01:03:41Indeed, good morning to them.
01:03:44As scary as Jim Glennon's club, of course.
01:03:48Their support, too, being waved in the banners.
01:03:53That looks at ground level. Perfect playing surface.
01:03:57A pity about the dominant wind.
01:04:0312 minutes into the second half. It's 6-3 that Ireland lead by.
01:04:09Referee trying to get these fundos up.
01:04:17That's the sound of a train in action. Easy up green.
01:04:26Paul Mariotti challenging well.
01:04:29Protecting Jones.
01:04:31And McGrath has just gone, I say, too soon.
01:04:36Well, can we expect a mighty thump here from Paul Thorburn? I expect so, yes.
01:04:42The indication is that he's going to kick the goal from Wales' 10-metre line.
01:04:50And we've seen, indeed, that he can do that.
01:05:12Well, we all recall the 70-metre kick against Scotland.
01:05:20Can he now, with wind assistance, do it for Wales against Ireland here at Athletic Park?
01:05:25To draw the scores level.
01:05:27Not on this occasion.
01:05:30Never got hold of it right and kicked as much of the turf as he did the ball.
01:05:35But that clearance has not found touch from Kiernan.
01:05:38And that's Ring.
01:05:42Pushed it cross field. Wales are offside.
01:05:52So they opt for the scrummage back.
01:05:55Just about on the halfway line.
01:06:08The referee, I think, indicating that Wales were drifting offside.
01:06:11This is Mullen. Mullen with McNeill in the line.
01:06:14Collides into Devereux.
01:06:24Still the fight for possession on the halfway line. Wales have it.
01:06:28That was Evans inside to Whitefoot.
01:06:32Taken on by Gareth Roberts.
01:06:36About 10 metres outside Ireland's 22.
01:06:38Jonathan Davies, Mark Ring, Devereux.
01:06:42Hadley across in the line. Thorburn, 2-1 here with Thorburn going himself.
01:06:47Inside though is Devereux. Devereux inside to Ring. It's a great score.
01:07:02Mark Ring, the hero of the moment.
01:07:06As we can see now, was well set up.
01:07:09And look how effective the extra man Hadley in from the left-hand side proved to be.
01:07:14Hadley got his pass away well. Thorburn now had Evans outside but he saw the support just in time inside.
01:07:21And then the two centres combined so well for Devereux to give the scoring pass to Mark Ring.
01:07:25A cracking try and the lead for Wales after 14 and a half minutes.
01:07:30This is how it looked from end on.
01:07:32Hadley, you see, managed to make enough of a burst through that tackle to set Thorburn clear.
01:07:37The dummy out to Evans was so effective.
01:07:40Tackle was all to no avail and even Bradley's effort couldn't stop Ring going over.
01:07:48So Thorburn off the post but rebounding the wrong way.
01:07:54But nevertheless, the important boost of that try.
01:07:57The first of the match with a quarter of an hour gone.
01:08:01Wales ahead, 7 points to 6.
01:08:21Got backed by Northland.
01:08:23On goes Paul Moriarty.
01:08:25Now Richard his brother.
01:08:31Gareth Roberts.
01:08:39The Web Ellis Cup.
01:08:43On the halfway line by the players' entrance.
01:08:46There's a long way to go before the final in Auckland on June the 20th.
01:08:50But Wales, I sense, are beginning to take command.
01:08:54But then we've seen Ireland come back before.
01:08:57Kiernan.
01:08:59Thorburn.
01:09:01Somewhere outside of 22.
01:09:04Neil White.
01:09:06Number 8 and 26.
01:09:29Maybe we'll check the code before long.
01:09:31That was number 8 and 26 on Wales' throw in.
01:09:37Shot gone by Paul Moriarty.
01:09:46So the scrummage in 15, about 10 metres outside Ireland's 22.
01:09:50Willie Anderson kicking up, but the referee had already caught Wales offside on the far fringe.
01:10:07Quickly taken by Bradley.
01:10:09Switches to Mullan. Mullan, 2-1 tackle.
01:10:12Looks to support too many Welshmen in the way.
01:10:14Down goes McGrath.
01:10:16Halfway line, Bradley again.
01:10:18Dean.
01:10:19Over the head of Thorburn.
01:10:22Back to his 22.
01:10:24Slice.
01:10:26May not carry out.
01:10:28It is now off Ringland.
01:10:31Ringland and Spillan together.
01:10:42Number 8, 21.
01:10:43Wales' call.
01:10:45Just inside their own half.
01:10:48Down at the front.
01:10:49Kingston through very quickly.
01:10:52Back from Bradley to Dean.
01:10:55Found the way outside was checked, so look to the forwards again.
01:10:58That's Kingston once more.
01:11:01This was controlled off, but they may yet win it back, only for the whistle to go.
01:11:09A bit of praise for Terry Kingston there, I think from Donal Lenehan.
01:11:13Terry Kingston, 23-year-old.
01:11:16He played for Young Ireland against Canada.
01:11:19And this is his first full cap.
01:11:23Moriarty challenges again for Jones.
01:11:25Davies.
01:11:27Pumps one up high. The wind will make it useful.
01:11:31Indeed it is.
01:11:32Allows Ring and Devereux through to spoil.
01:11:40Shoots out the side.
01:11:42Moriarty.
01:11:44Unchallenged Whitefoot.
01:11:46The pass to Phillips was forward.
01:11:54Certain tries spoiled by the final pass.
01:12:01And Whitefoot was trundling through for his moment of glory.
01:12:04Then found Phillips in support, but the pass just a shade forward.
01:12:10It was the breakthrough by Paul Moriarty that set the whole thing up.
01:12:15Managed to get that second fly hack in.
01:12:18Gathered it well, and here's the front row union.
01:12:21Poor Jeff Whitefoot.
01:12:23He'll have to relive that one a few times, as the pass just travelled a shade forward to Kevin Phillips.
01:12:39Again, niggling injuries that caused play to be held up for Moriarty.
01:12:48He's alright.
01:12:50And the scrum is just 10 metres from Arlen's line.
01:12:57Again, the referee checking that the Welsh breakaways don't come off the side of the scrum too soon.
01:13:02Dean in trouble. Ringland trying to run out of trouble to his pack.
01:13:07Bradley burrowing through.
01:13:10Gets some forward momentum, but Wales have possession.
01:13:13Jonathan Davies looks for the drop goal.
01:13:15It's given.
01:13:17Sweetly struck.
01:13:19Jonathan Davies, his seventh international drop goal.
01:13:23And a vital score to give Wales a clear four-point lead.
01:13:30Well, it was Collins setting up superb possession then.
01:13:34And Jonathan Davies had his sights set.
01:13:37Clean through.
01:13:39Great drop goal.
01:13:41With 21 minutes played of the second half.
01:13:44And a certain little look of confidence there, I sense.
01:13:47Almost a smile in the eyes from the 24-year-olds.
01:13:55So, 10-6 Wales, back from 6-0 down.
01:14:01Jones for feedback.
01:14:03Davies, the big kick, but a long way in field.
01:14:07Hugo McNeil.
01:14:12Touched that well.
01:14:199 and 9, 24.
01:14:249 and 9, 24.
01:14:26One side in, Stuart Evans.
01:14:30Northsterp.
01:14:32Down.
01:14:36There from Phillips.
01:14:38Jonathan Davies checks.
01:14:43Crotton just lets it roll to its appointed place.
01:14:48Just on the 22-metre line.
01:15:03Through is Roberts.
01:15:05Good wedge of support as Wales begin to dominate.
01:15:08Robert Jones now.
01:15:10There's a mass of red jerseys in support.
01:15:13Roberts again.
01:15:14Collins standing off.
01:15:16Takes out two, three men.
01:15:17So, letting his pack come in behind and try and set up loose ball.
01:15:20There it is.
01:15:22But the whistle has already gone and Wales have the feed.
01:15:27They begin to pin Ireland within their own 22.
01:15:33About 17 minutes remain.
01:15:37Paul Moriarty tries to touch through the tackles.
01:15:44Paul Dean, though, looks for a counter-attack.
01:15:46And his kick to touch has almost blown back over his head.
01:15:50Desmond Schirl can't hold.
01:15:52Philanders.
01:15:53Five metres out, it's still loose.
01:15:55Bradley in trouble.
01:15:56Still Bradley, trying to find a way to get the touch.
01:15:59And up to give away the five-metre scrummage as the pressure came from all sides.
01:16:04And Ireland are beginning to reel.
01:16:12Not the celebration kind of reel either.
01:16:20So, Wales put in.
01:16:22Five-metre scrum.
01:16:26Again, Moriarty.
01:16:29Well, no knock-on given.
01:16:31Jonathan Davies, the second drop goal.
01:16:35How about that?
01:16:37Coolness itself.
01:16:41Just three minutes after his previous effort.
01:16:45Three more points with the drop goal by Jonathan Davies.
01:16:49Well, a look to roll backwards.
01:16:51Robert Jones, his little fumble.
01:16:53And there's the check off the left foot.
01:16:57And just a little chip kick with the right to add three points.
01:17:01And significantly put Wales at least two scores ahead.
01:17:10Eight drop goals in international rugby.
01:17:14That's just his 14th appearance for Wales today.
01:17:17Jonathan Davies.
01:17:2113 points to six, a quarter of an hour to go.
01:17:24And you've got a glimpse of the anxious look on the face of Phil Orr,
01:17:29the veteran of Old Wesley.
01:17:32The fourth most capped today in world rugby.
01:17:40With a massive effort required now.
01:17:42Philip has done well.
01:17:45A late call-up for Billy James.
01:17:49Jonathan Davies, teasing ball crossfield.
01:17:53The wind just carrying it that metre too far out on the full.
01:18:0921 years old, Robert Jones with his partner there, Jonathan Davies.
01:18:15Their 11th time together in international rugby.
01:18:21And a happy partnership it's been.
01:18:24Paul Moriarty, revelling in the number eight position.
01:18:31Collins and Roberts had a significant impact on this game.
01:18:35Now Jonathan Davies, Cazegoe himself.
01:18:38Beautifully done, third dummy.
01:18:40Tries to get the support pass to Mark Ring.
01:18:42That was a certain try on then if it had succeeded.
01:18:47And in desperation it's scrambled away by Arland.
01:18:50But oozing confidence now with every movement, every motion, Jonathan Davies.
01:19:01As Wales get well on top.
01:19:06They lead by seven points.
01:19:09And the way things are going it could well be more.
01:19:13Stuart Evans, his dummy to the pass now, Kevin Phillips.
01:19:22Offside.
01:19:25Offside.
01:19:35Kevin Phillips is the injured player.
01:19:44Gary Farmer.
01:19:47From the needs club.
01:19:55Offside.
01:20:07Thoughts of course go to a man who can't wait to get on the field.
01:20:11That's Alan Phillips.
01:20:14Who only arrived in New Zealand this morning.
01:20:17And his first question I believe was to ask am I actually in the side or am I going to have to sit on the bench.
01:20:23But Phillips is alright and indeed he's playing well.
01:20:35James Kiernan.
01:20:39Into touch but only about six metres or seven metres upfield.
01:20:44On the mark.
01:20:47And Arland still on the rack.
01:20:50Wales assert themselves. Initial tap by Moriarty.
01:20:54The Austrian support.
01:21:09About 11 minutes remaining.
01:21:12Arland still backs to the wall.
01:21:14Just about on their 22.
01:21:20Offside.
01:21:25Wales offside.
01:21:29And of course remember Arland has got to score at least twice.
01:21:33Hence their decision to run it. No, they left it to McKinnon after all.
01:21:41Ten minutes to go. Plus a little injury time.
01:21:4918.81.
01:21:56Still not home in dry air.
01:21:59Wales but looking more and more that way.
01:22:05Evans to Whitefoot.
01:22:07Again the front row in combination.
01:22:11Phillips was the man to put it in straight away.
01:22:14The front row in combination.
01:22:17Phillips was the man to put it inside.
01:22:19Collins in support. Still they drive up that far touch line.
01:22:24There's just a bit of a dust up developing.
01:22:38There's some slick handling by the heavyweights.
01:22:45And Moriarty and Donal Lenehan.
01:22:51And a clear indication from referee Mr Fitzgerald about future conduct by both teams.
01:22:59Lenehan and Moriarty contest and it rebounds off Lenehan to Moriarty.
01:23:03Jonathan Davies took it well. Looks for the third drop goal.
01:23:06But the knock on is already given. It was wide in any case.
01:23:14Arland beginning to suffer at the hands in this Welsh ascendancy that has come with wind advantage in the second half.
01:23:30Having contained Arland to a six point lead at half time.
01:23:36It didn't look enough then.
01:23:39Bradley Deane lovely dummy.
01:23:42McNeil trying to find Ringland.
01:23:44Thorburn intercepts the tackling on him.
01:23:46But Hadley's the feed man to Jonathan to Devereux.
01:23:51And Wales again trying to break out.
01:23:56The kick has travelled right across the dead ball line.
01:24:01But I think Wales would have settled for a 22 drop out.
01:24:09Takes them back to where they planned to stay.
01:24:17Eight minutes plus injury time remaining.
01:24:20Wales 13 Arland 6.
01:24:28An opening game of great significance.
01:24:30Not that the losers in any way are out of the competition.
01:24:34But it makes the qualifying significant.
01:24:37In the meantime Evans out on the pole.
01:24:41The significance of course being not just to get a confident start to the proceedings.
01:24:45But also to try and be top dogs in the group.
01:24:50First and runners up in each pool of four qualify for the quarter finals.
01:25:07Toma, Wales next to Poland.
01:25:18And it's Canada who will face Arland.
01:25:28Canada having shown already to both these sides that not necessarily any pushover at all.
01:25:33Having destroyed Tonga by the margin of 37 points to 4 in the opening match in this pool.
01:25:38Away goes Paul Moriarty.
01:25:41And there's a bit of a gap in the Irish defence.
01:25:43Crofton comes over to cover it.
01:25:45But Wales are there in much greater strength.
01:25:49And there's still possession for Wales.
01:25:54Phillips setting it up again.
01:25:57And held up 10 metres out from Arland's line.
01:26:03And it's Phillips at the bottom of the heap.
01:26:19Some excellent loose play by the hooker.
01:26:22Came in as Billy James clearly suffered such an early injury blow.
01:26:28Before the competition has even started.
01:26:3310 metres out.
01:26:44Jones, Davies, straight through to Devereux.
01:26:48Devereux trying to find ring.
01:26:50Irish cover there this time.
01:26:52Bradley, Crofton the curve.
01:26:56And a knock on given in front of Arland's foot.
01:27:10It's been a great second half for Wales.
01:27:13And the back row in particular evident.
01:27:16And of course Arland with the setback of having to readjust their pack with the injury to Matthews.
01:27:23But now it's Arland breaking out.
01:27:24Crofton with the feed from McNeill.
01:27:28Covering was Collins.
01:27:32And as you heard the referee say the ball is not forward.
01:27:38Wales get the put in.
01:27:39Wales get the put in.
01:27:53Jones.
01:27:56Carradine by the wind, out on the ball.
01:28:09Just four minutes.
01:28:11And some injury time to go.
01:28:13Still all, still as eager as ever.
01:28:18Kiernan to Mullen.
01:28:20Trying to carve a way through but there's a swathe of red jerseys in his way.
01:28:2710 metres outside Arland 22.
01:28:31McNeill trying to create.
01:28:34Dean lovely reverse pass to Bradley.
01:28:38Back races Robert Jones for the Welsh 22.
01:28:43Still in play.
01:28:45Kiernan with McNeill outside him.
01:28:50Devereux.
01:28:53And the timing of the pass just wasn't right.
01:28:56And the two players colliding.
01:28:59Devereux coming off the worst.
01:29:00Devereux.
01:29:07McNeill's actually getting man and ball together then.
01:29:11Devereux taking a knock but I think he's alright.
01:29:23John Devereux one of the ever present of recent days.
01:29:26It's his first cap against England in 86.
01:29:28He's played every game, 11 in a row.
01:29:31And happy no doubt and confident with that scoreline standing as it does.
01:29:38A seven point lead for Wales with two minutes now and injury time to go.
01:29:50Jones.
01:29:51Davies.
01:29:52Three to two.
01:29:53But it was a firm tackle from Dean.
01:29:56That set Wales backwards.
01:29:57Crofton's fly hack on.
01:29:59Rebounds.
01:30:01But Ring recovers.
01:30:03Floats it round to Evans.
01:30:06And Yard-Evans.
01:30:08Kick deflected off Glennon's touch.
01:30:12Yard-Evans.
01:30:15With not so many chances to show his great skills.
01:30:18Great skills.
01:30:20A player certainly closely watched and followed by opposition.
01:30:29Jones.
01:30:30Davies.
01:30:31Ring.
01:30:33Into the box though on the switch.
01:30:36There lies Crofton.
01:30:38And again the wind, still unrelenting in its force, carries it over the goal line.
01:30:49So a commanding performance in the second half by the Wales pack.
01:30:54To mount a tremendous recovery.
01:30:56Six nil down at half time but now it's 13-6 as we come into the last minute of proper time.
01:31:02Norster.
01:31:04Back from Paul Moriarty.
01:31:06Jonathan Davies.
01:31:08Closed it long.
01:31:09It looked forward to me.
01:31:10The referee was close by and has given it.
01:31:18May have been indeed carried by the wind to make that significant little bit of difference.
01:31:26Injury time being played.
01:31:35Bradley.
01:31:37Neal and Ringland.
01:31:40No way past Hadley.
01:31:41Inside is McGrath.
01:31:44Halfway line.
01:31:46Penalty to Wales.
01:31:49Ireland in desperation going straight over the top.
01:31:55And a chance.
01:31:57Perhaps the final nail could this be from Paul Thorburn.
01:32:09So reluctantly Ireland's players trundle back towards the goal line.
01:32:19As Thorburn prepares what might be the killer blow.
01:32:27But a seven point lead already.
01:32:29Really it looks as though Wales are in no danger.
01:32:32Thorburn then virtually on the halfway line.
01:32:35Another great effort.
01:32:37Just below the crossbar.
01:32:40Ireland of course forced a run.
01:32:44Mullen.
01:32:46Brendan Mullen.
01:32:47Good support from Dean.
01:32:49Taken on by McGrath.
01:32:50Halfway line.
01:32:52Now it's Lenehan leading with the captain's example.
01:32:56Bradley dispossessed.
01:33:02Almost on.
01:33:04By Wales.
01:33:06Valiant effort.
01:33:09Clearly a somewhat disappointed looking Sid Miller.
01:33:13Looks on.
01:33:16Well that's some good partnership work by the halves there.
01:33:22McNeil.
01:33:24As time runs out.
01:33:26Bradley.
01:33:27Mullen.
01:33:29Trying to create but red jerseys popping up everywhere to deny them.
01:33:46Two minutes now played of injury time.
01:33:49It stays at 13 points to Wales.
01:33:52Ireland six.
01:33:57Still Ireland have a go.
01:33:59Crosson on the end of the line.
01:34:01McNeil inside but the cover's excellent from Devereux.
01:34:07And.
01:34:08Strummage has been given.
01:34:11There's the ball forward.
01:34:15And Wales in no hurry.
01:34:17It's a happy bench down there with Derek Grinnell and Tony Gray assistant manager and coach respectively.
01:34:24No doubt well satisfied with his second half performance.
01:34:27And indeed the effort's in contention.
01:34:29It's a very good game.
01:34:31It's a very good game.
01:34:33It's a very good game.
01:34:34No doubt well satisfied with his second half performance.
01:34:37And indeed the effort's in containing Ireland in the first half that was to prove so crucial.
01:34:44Oh yes.
01:34:47The ball just rolling Wales way.
01:34:51And Jonathan Davies puts Ireland back on their heels again.
01:35:04Three minutes gone of injury time.
01:35:14Remember we did have seven minutes extra time in the first half.
01:35:26Bradley.
01:35:28Dean under pressure.
01:35:30And an ever present Welsh back row it's been today.
01:35:35Roberts, Moriarty, Collins have stabbed their names on the game.
01:35:40And there it is the final whistle goes.
01:35:42And it's first blood to Wales in the 1987 World Cup.
01:35:47Beating Ireland 13 points to 6 in a predictable second half comeback.
01:35:54Having managed to contain.
