00:00:00Last year Oxford University, a team coached by Alan Jones, who of course is coaching Australia today.

00:00:08Well this is the Irish side today, fielding 14 of the 15 players they used in their opening World Cup match against Wales a fortnight ago.

00:00:15The only change is at number 8, where 23-year-old rookie Neil Francis, who's never played in this position before prior to the World Cup,

00:00:20comes in after a very impressive debut for Ireland against Tonga four days ago.

00:00:25Oxford is a lock for this tour, but a 6'6'' has been chosen as the number 8,

00:00:30in the hope that he can nullify the line-out advantage that the Australians should command in this phase of play.

00:00:35Ireland will be captain again today by Donald Enneaghan.

00:00:38Alan Jones has sprung a couple of surprises in naming his side for this match.

00:00:41Firstly, he has shunted David Campisi from wing to full-back in place of the injured Roger Gould,

00:00:46which is the added effect of giving the Australian back-line a bit more pace and zip.

00:00:51Neither Bourke nor Brigg, the two wingers named for this match, are renowned for their speed.

00:00:54But the big surprise is in the front row, the naming of Cameron Lillicrap,

00:00:57the 24-year-old Brisbane University student who was replaced by top-old Rodriguez, the Argentinian wallaby.

00:01:02And this has come as a major surprise here on Australian rugby.

00:01:06And, of course, Rodriguez has been the cornerstone of the Australian scrum for the last three or four years,

00:01:10but he has slowed down a little in his World Cup matches, and Lillicrap gets his big moment today.

00:01:16Well, unfortunately, the day here in Sydney is very overcast.

00:01:19We've had a lot of rain over the last 36 hours, and the field here at the Concord Oval,

00:01:23although from the high position up here in the camera it may look perfect,

00:01:27I can tell you that it's a very heavy ground out there this afternoon.

00:01:30The ground staff, when they arrived here at 7 o'clock this morning,

00:01:33were amazed at the amount of water that was lying on the ground.

00:01:36Their intention was to cut the grass today in the hope that it would improve the performance of the ground,

00:01:42but there was so much water around that they could not do that.

00:01:44They've been drilling holes all day, trying and mopping the water up,

00:01:47but I'm afraid between the 222s on this side of the ground,

00:01:51the field is expected to cut up very, very quickly.

00:01:54And as a result of the indifferent weather we've had here in Sydney,

00:01:57the crowd here at the Concord Oval today is not as large as had been anticipated.

00:02:01It has a ground capacity of about 20,000 people,

00:02:04but with this stormy weather that's around Sydney and there's a lot of black clouds above us at the moment,

00:02:10the crowd is probably no more than about 10,000 or 15,000 people.

00:02:14A lot of interest in this match here in Australia, and particularly the performance of the Australian team.

00:02:19And with me this afternoon, I have Trevor Allen, the former Wallaby captain.

00:02:23And as we mentioned before, the opinion appears to be largely divided here in Australia about this Wallaby team,

00:02:29but the feeling I get is that it just doesn't seem to have the support that the team had in New Zealand last year

00:02:34or had when it won the Grand Slam.

00:02:36Well, I think basically, Brendan, of course, when they won the Grand Slam

00:02:40and the performance they put on in New Zealand last year was great.

00:02:43And at the moment, they're not firing very well,

00:02:46and I think the Australian public have been a little bit disappointed with them.

00:02:51It's quite a contrast to the overwhelming support the All Blacks are getting in New Zealand,

00:02:55but here in Australia, opinion is divided.

00:02:57In fact, at this Oval here three days ago against Japan,

00:03:00the Australian team was booed and jeered for their indifferent performance.

00:03:03Well, they're getting a better reception today as they come out onto the field.

00:03:06There's Cameron Lillicrap, the new man on the field, Tom Lawton,

00:03:10Nick Barr-Jones, Steve Cutlet, Brett Papworth, Peter Griggs,

00:03:15and the somber face of David Campisi.

00:03:17It's a big day for the Australian fullback

00:03:19who returns to the place where he played against the All Blacks in the second test last year.

00:03:23He had a nightmare of a game down there,

00:03:25and he will be a key player in this Australian side today.

00:03:28But he will be under a lot of pressure,

00:03:30and I'm sure the Irish inside half Paul Dean will be putting the ball high very quickly

00:03:34to test Campisi, a facet of his play that has never been renowned for its strength.

00:03:38No Irish national anthem here today,

00:03:41it will just be the Australian anthem before the match gets underway.

00:03:54And this really is a big test, not only of the character of the Australian team today,

00:03:58but also their confidence, which I imagine has been rocked a little

00:04:01by the stinging criticism that they've taken in the news media.

00:04:05Even this morning in the Sunday Telegraph here,

00:04:07Mark Keller, who writes a rugby column,

00:04:09was very, very strong and caustic in his words about the Wallaby performances in the World Cup.

00:04:15In fact, he's made the comparison, which is interesting,

00:04:17and I'm sure Graham Thorne, if he's listening, will be most intrigued to hear this,

00:04:20that he likens Australian rugby at the moment

00:04:23to the stereotype rugby that British teams played five years ago.

00:04:28Yes, well, look, can I just say one thing, Brendan?

00:04:30This is rather interesting, and I think it will interest the people in New Zealand.

00:04:33The Australian side will not come over to the area

00:04:35where they're supposed to line up for the national anthem,

00:04:38and I think this is indicative of this side really wanting to get together.

00:04:43The officials, I can tell you now, are quite upset about it,

00:04:46because it has been all through the week that the two sides line up,

00:04:49face the stands and the national anthem, or in this case, only the one,

00:04:52and the Australian side basically has refused to come over.

00:04:55So the island side has gone down the other end, as you can see there now,

00:04:58and so they're forming up and getting together again.

00:05:01Personally, as an Australian, I think it's a bit of bad form.

00:05:05They know what was outlaid for them all through this tournament,

00:05:09but that's how I feel that they are going to play this very hard,

00:05:13and as I said in my earlier comments, Australia will have to.

00:06:03CHEERING

00:06:08And a crowd of about 15,000 people here at the Concord Oval

00:06:12in good voice this afternoon, supporting the Australian team

00:06:15with the national anthem, and they gave them a rousing reception.

00:06:19The Irish team, it's a big day for them,

00:06:21and particularly for this man here, 23-year-old Neil Francis,

00:06:24thrust into the white hot heat of international competition,

00:06:27playing today in only his second international.

00:06:29Paul Dean, something of a surprise in his naming at first 5'8",

00:06:32the feeling was that Tony Ward, because he'd played in the last two matches,

00:06:35and especially now that Campisi was at fullback,

00:06:38that the tactical boot of Tony Ward would in fact wear the number 10 jersey.

00:06:42And the big surprise in the Australian team, 24-year-old Cameron Lillicramp,

00:06:47who's replaced Andrik Rodriguez in the Australian front row.

00:06:51And it's Michael Liner, with the Australians playing from right to left

00:06:54on this very soggy ground here at the Concord Oval,

00:06:57as Hugh McNeill brings play back towards the halfway,

00:07:00and it's on this side of the field where the ground is at its soggiest

00:07:04and that side is at its softest.

00:07:07And there you can see that area between the 5m and the 15m mark,

00:07:11in from touch, which is looking rather barren and rather soft.

00:07:15Nick Barr-Jones at a very late charge on the Australian halfback,

00:07:18that'll be a penalty.

00:07:21Yes, Cutler took that ball very well, or punched that ball well from the line-out.

00:07:26When we watch the replay, watch it closely.

00:07:30It's Barr-Jones.

00:07:32Ooh, two. The second one really was the late one.

00:07:35It was Philip Matthews, the Irish loose forward,

00:07:37that just charged straight into Nick Barr-Jones.

00:07:41And the big, solid Australian halfback,

00:07:43he's probably the biggest halfback here at the World Cup.

00:07:45It's 6ft and nearly 13½ stone,

00:07:48but even for this solid fellow, that was a very, very telling blow.

00:07:53Yes, well, here it comes again, and of course you can see,

00:07:55there's the kick away, and it's really the man up that high

00:07:58that really did the damage to Barr-Jones.

00:08:03But unfortunately for Barr-Jones,

00:08:04it looked as though he might have a severe shoulder injury.

00:08:08Unfortunately, I'd say he's a bit unlucky because it's so early in the game,

00:08:12probably not warmed up,

00:08:13and probably that's one reason why he has really felt it.

00:08:17Well, the day here in Sydney is rather chilly

00:08:19with all this wet weather that's around.

00:08:21It hasn't been as warm as it has been for the last couple of days,

00:08:23and look, Nick Barr-Jones does not look good at all.

00:08:27Yes, and again, when we were speaking in our preview,

00:08:30I suggested that this man could be the big difference

00:08:33to the way the Australian side goes.

00:08:36Well, this is the man that, I guess you could say,

00:08:38is the villain of the piece, Philip Matthews,

00:08:41the Irish loose forward that was completely uncalled for,

00:08:44that charge on Nick Barr-Jones.

00:08:46Perhaps Sir Matthews might claim in his defence

00:08:48that he was trying to charge the kick down,

00:08:49but he's cut his face as well, and he looks very groggy,

00:08:52and I don't think he'll be taking much further part in the match.

00:08:54And Brian Smith, the Australian substitute half-back,

00:08:59quickly looks as if he's going to make an appearance in this match,

00:09:01which is only a minute old.

00:09:03So this is a big blow because Barr-Jones is really the architect

00:09:05behind this Australian team.

00:09:07He certainly is. He's the player that they've depended on so much

00:09:11because he has become a very, very competent half-back.

00:09:15In many ways, he reminds me of some of the real top New Zealand half-backs.

00:09:20He's solid, he's always there, and he's tackling.

00:09:23Unfortunately, I think he does too much tackling,

00:09:25but he's a tough character, and he looks as though he's going on with it.

00:09:28Well, he's going to stay on, but he looks very groggy,

00:09:31and Smith, who looked to be warming up to take his place,

00:09:34has been shunted back to his position on the reserves bench,

00:09:37and so Barr-Jones will continue.

00:09:40But whether he will see out the match must be another question.

00:09:46And he's still not right. He's still indicating to the Australian camp that he...

00:09:54Yes, I think he's looking for a bit of strapping.

00:09:56He doesn't want to leave the field at this stage.

00:10:05And for those of you who may just have joined our telecast,

00:10:08I'm very pleased to have with me this afternoon Trevor Allan,

00:10:11the former Wallaby captain,

00:10:13a man who we know well in New Zealand with his work for ABC Rugby,

00:10:17but today on loan to us at Television New Zealand.

00:10:19Meanwhile, the attention focuses back to Michael Liner.

00:10:25Simple kick for the Queenslander and the Australians,

00:10:28although they've paid a fairly heavy price for that penalty.

00:10:32With the injury to Nick Barr-Jones, they're on the board and leading by 3-0

00:10:35after just one minute of play.

00:10:39Michael Liner, who had kicked 36 points in the World Cup prior to this match,

00:10:43and that will do his confidence the world of good.

00:10:45It's always good to get the first one over.

00:10:52So the Irish, who have been one of the major disappointments here at the World Cup,

00:10:55their form has been rather indifferent throughout the first three matches

00:11:00of this particular tournament, and...

00:11:02David Campisi with his first touch of the ball makes a mistake.

00:11:07Well, that was good thinking on the part of Michael Kiernan.

00:11:09He's tested Campisi right from the kick-off,

00:11:12and the Australian full-back has been found wanting.

00:11:15Yes, he seemed to have the ball covered, but it was only a small knock-on,

00:11:20but knock-on, quite enough of it.

00:11:24Bradley to Dean.

00:11:28Back comes Kiernan, not going to switch back,

00:11:30but he's taken 15 metres out from the Australian line,

00:11:33and the Irish forwards have been penalised, a hand, I think, in that ruck,

00:11:37and already tempers are starting to fray there.

00:11:40It's Bill Campbell and Terry Kingston that started it,

00:11:43and Campbell is still having his say.

00:11:46He has a few words also to his opposite number, Willie Anderson,

00:11:51and it's going to be, I imagine, a fairly willing encounter.

00:12:00So Liner, 15 metres from his own goal line.

00:12:10Well, that was a confident kick by Liner.

00:12:13Liner, they certainly... Oh, here's the fracas that took pace.

00:12:17Now, you might see, I think Campbell came over eventually

00:12:20to try and help out. He's not in the picture yet,

00:12:23and then got involved.

00:12:26The Irish captain, Ronald Linehan,

00:12:30at number two in the line-out.

00:12:33It's the big man on the Australian side, Steve Cutlett,

00:12:36who manages to pull down that untidy ball 15 metres

00:12:40inside the Irish half

00:12:43as the Australians start to roll them all.

00:12:46There's a little Simon Poitivin, number six,

00:12:48probably the smallest fellow on the field, or certainly the smallest forward.

00:12:52He's absolutely dwarfed amongst some of the towering big men

00:12:55on the Australian pack.

00:13:01And Farr Jones on the Irish 10 metre line.

00:13:05And the referee playing advantage to the Australians.

00:13:11And again, it's Farr Jones who's in trouble.

00:13:14I don't really think this man can continue for much longer.

00:13:16He's in pain again,

00:13:19and he must come off shortly.

00:13:20Yes, I think, Brendan, he's a pretty sick boy,

00:13:22and obviously he's going to be quite sensible about this.

00:13:25I think, you know, he has a very bad injury there,

00:13:28one that obviously is not going to allow him to go through this match.

00:13:32And of course, here's the youngster, Smith,

00:13:34who played against Japan the other day and was not, I must say,

00:13:37terribly impressive, but then again,

00:13:40it was an impressive side against Japan.

00:13:43But that's a blow to Australia.

00:13:44This is the worst possible start that Australia could have wished for.

00:13:47Nick Farr Jones, who had only played in the match against England,

00:13:50and this man, Brian Smith,

00:13:52has won the number nine jersey for Australia in their last two matches,

00:13:55but it was thought with the return of Jones today

00:13:57that it would make all the difference to this Australian team.

00:13:59But he's only been on the field for five minutes.

00:14:03Bradley testing Campisi again,

00:14:05and once again his hands let him down.

00:14:08The Irish with the quick throw-in.

00:14:11Fifteen metres inside the Australian half.

00:14:14And the Irish look as if they're willing to play this game at pace.

00:14:19Dean, Brendan Mulling with the kick across the field.

00:14:28Sorry, Brendan, but I'd have to say this is it.

00:14:31That was beautiful.

00:14:32He can expect a few more bombs coming his way.

00:14:35They'll test him out now that he appears to not have his confidence.

00:14:41Tom Laughton, the Australian hooker with the throw-in.

00:14:44And Mr Anderson, not happy with those Irish forwards in their line-out,

00:14:48and has awarded a defensive penalty to the Australians

00:14:52just a few metres out from their 22.

00:14:56So I suppose if there's two key men in this Australian back-line,

00:14:59it would be Nick Farr Jones and David Campisi.

00:15:01One has left the field, and the other has looked very tentative.

00:15:04On the two times he's touched the ball, that's not the start

00:15:06that I'm sure Alan Jones would want.

00:15:08Yes, and obviously Campisi was brought into the game

00:15:11by the Irish, and he's got a lot of confidence in him.

00:16:54there's practically no breeze here today.

00:16:56The ground appears to be more moist this side than the far side.

00:17:01The ground seems to be holding, so it's capable of producing

00:17:05good open football when they decide to do so.

00:17:09Well, the Irish winning a bit of ball from the line-outs

00:17:11here in the first 10 minutes of this match was coming

00:17:13as something of a surprise.

00:17:14Bradley got lost in the feet of Michael Liner.

00:17:175 metres outside the 22.

00:17:19I think it was knocked forward as well by Liner.

00:17:21And so we'll have the scrum.

00:17:26And if you're wondering what that black strip is

00:17:28that appears on your screen every now and again,

00:17:30it's a steel rope.

00:17:32There's a number of them here on the stand at the Concord Oval

00:17:34which are necessary to keep the roof of the stand on

00:17:37when the wind blows, believe it or not.

00:17:46I mentioned before, it was something of a surprise

00:17:48to see him in this Irish back line after the Irish

00:17:52had decided to play Tony Ward in the first two,

00:17:54the last two matches.

00:17:57Not renowned for the same degree of tactical sense

00:18:00with his boot as Tony Ward.

00:18:03But he is a very experienced first 5'8",

00:18:06as is this man Michael Liner who will kick for goal again.

00:18:09Yes, and interestingly enough, I've just mentioned the wind.

00:18:13The umbrellas are going up on the far side because

00:18:15the rain is starting to come in a fine drizzle.

00:18:17And with it, the wind seems to have lifted a little

00:18:20and is supporting Australia.

00:18:22That's blowing right to left.

00:18:24And so Liner has just a slight assistance of breeze

00:18:27and a little bit of rain to go with it.

00:18:33Liner, of course, is the player that

00:18:37when he's in goal-kicking form,

00:18:39keeps Australia in the picture in a great number of games.

00:18:42A lot depends on him.

00:18:44He's landed one already, but that was from straight in front.

00:18:46This one a little more difficult.

00:18:53So Michael Liner with a kick of approximately 40 metres.

00:18:57This to make it 6-0.

00:19:09Michael Liner lands his second goal from two attempts

00:19:13and the Australians out to a 6-0 lead.

00:19:16Well, he didn't have a very good day with his boot

00:19:18in the first match against England,

00:19:19where he only landed four out of ten.

00:19:21But since then, he's been right on target

00:19:23and he looks as if he's got his kicking boots on today as well.

00:19:30And the clock showing 10 minutes gone in this first half.

00:19:35And Michael Kiernan, the Irish centre,

00:19:38gets the match going again.

00:19:41And the tap taken down by Kleinemann,

00:19:43midway, 22 and a half away.

00:19:45Smith calling for it.

00:19:47That's the Australian, 22.

00:19:50And the liner's in trouble.

00:19:52But the Irish backs offside.

00:19:54Mullin, the two centres, Mullin and Kiernan.

00:20:00And I must say, the referee, Mr Anderson,

00:20:03had the game the other day, Australia and Japan,

00:20:06and he was fairly strict on that decision

00:20:09of the backs being up too close to the opposition.

00:20:16And so another very tidy kick from Michael Liner,

00:20:19from deep inside his own half.

00:20:20Play to take place now on the Irish 10-metre line.

00:20:33Once again, it's Neil Francis who takes it for Ireland.

00:20:35He couldn't keep his fingers around the ball

00:20:37and it's eventually the Australians that win it.

00:20:39Liner with those Irish backs up very quickly.

00:21:37One of the problems that Australia have had

00:21:39in their earlier lead-up matches

00:21:41is that their forwards have not been racing as a pack.

00:21:44They're looking a bit tighter, playing like an eight,

00:21:47than they have previously.

00:21:55This is the area, of course, that we're moving into

00:21:57that Australia expect to get plenty of ball

00:22:00in the short line-out they've got.

00:22:04But it's, in fact, Anderson that gets the tap for Ireland.

00:22:07Matthews, midway 22 and halfway.

00:22:09He's lost it forward.

00:22:10The referee playing advantage to the Australians.

00:22:12Burke comes in to tidy the ball up from the Australians.

00:22:15Trevor Ringland and Matt Burke,

00:22:17these two old adversaries from the 1984 match,

00:22:19and some fairly vigorous rucking on Ringland.

00:22:22And the referee has, in fact, penalised Ringland,

00:22:25who was upset at these Australian boots

00:22:27going over the top of him.

00:22:29And he's pointing that out to Mr Anderson.

00:22:31But he had been penalised.

00:22:35Yes, there's little doubt that Ringland

00:22:38was really walked on by Burke.

00:22:41Whether anything occurred before there that the referee saw,

00:22:44or whether it was because he didn't let the ball go.

00:22:49Well, it was very interesting that Burke and Ringland

00:22:52should explode there, because back in that match in 1984,

00:22:56they marked each other at Lansdowne Road in Dublin,

00:22:59and there was a very fiery exchange between the two of them.

00:23:02And obviously the score hasn't been settled.

00:23:08Good kick from line-up.

00:23:16That's the Irish line, just 15 metres away.

00:23:18The first time the Australians have been inside.

00:23:21The Irish 22 in line-up, charged down by Mullen.

00:23:26And McNeil has gone in.

00:23:27Crossan is there as well, just a few metres out from the Irish line.

00:23:33And the Australian forwards are a little ragged to get there.

00:23:35The ball has gone loose, and it's a try!

00:23:44A bad defensive error by the Irish,

00:23:46a couple of metres from their own line,

00:23:48has given Australia the first try of the match.

00:23:50After 15 minutes of play, and the Australians out to a 10-0 lead.

00:23:58It was McNeil that went in first of all,

00:24:00to tidy up the kick from line-up, which was charged down.

00:24:04And the Australian forwards, a little slow to get there.

00:24:08And the ball went loose from that ruck.

00:24:11The pass from Bradley.

00:24:15And McIntyre there to score the try.

00:24:18The kick, as we said, was charged down.

00:24:21Yes, and it would appear, when you look at it,

00:24:23that Ireland should have wrapped this up,

00:24:25should have wrapped it up pretty well,

00:24:27because all of a sudden there was enough of them there,

00:24:29but somewhere along the ball was spilt out and came out wide.

00:24:32Now, to me, there looked as though there was enough,

00:24:34and it should have been an Ireland ball,

00:24:36but someone, there it goes, there's the bad pass,

00:24:38and of course McIntyre up with it.

00:24:50And so Australia away to a good start.

00:24:56And so line-up with the conversion.

00:24:59So the Australians, they haven't looked too impressive,

00:25:02but the fact is on the scoreboard,

00:25:04they're looking most impressive out by 12 to nil.

00:25:07Yes, unfortunately for Ireland,

00:25:10they really haven't started to get together themselves,

00:25:13but Australia's starting to move into a better combination

00:25:17than we've seen, and their forwards were a bit slow,

00:25:20I thought, getting to that ruck,

00:25:22but showing that they're anxious to get there,

00:25:24which should prove a benefit to them as they go through,

00:25:27because it is a good Australian.

00:25:35Michael Kewnham with the restart,

00:25:37and the tap back to Tyneman again,

00:25:39midway, 32 at halfway,

00:25:41and that will do the Australian team a world of good.

00:25:43Their confidence, I'm sure, to be out by 12 points so early in this match.

00:25:51Smith, the replacement, half-back,

00:25:53but he's put it straight into the arms of Keith Crossan.

00:25:57Crossan, who was trying to run the ball into touch,

00:26:00and the liner from inside his own 22.

00:26:02That's a huge punt from Michael Liner.

00:26:04He hasn't found touch.

00:26:05McNeil, outside his 22.

00:29:07and I must say this, and probably New Zealand will not like it,

00:29:22mainly because yesterday I didn't think Scotland gave the opposition

00:29:26that the All Blacks wanted,

00:29:28and obviously Ireland are not coming back.

00:29:44Through what must be the tallest uprights I've ever seen at a rugby ground,

00:29:47and I imagine it must be a psychological boost or advantage

00:29:53because the crossbar must look so low when you compare where it sits

00:29:58They are really extraordinary.

00:29:59I don't know whether our ABC girl will give us a good look at them later,

00:37:47Every time the rain comes up, and it's really only come up once or twice in this game,

00:40:44There must be a minimum of two players on each side in the short line out.

00:41:56It certainly wasn't a late tackle, but obviously there was some obstruction

00:42:00on the player coming through by one of the Australian players.

00:42:04So a chance for Ireland to post their first points.

00:42:09If my memory serves me correct, this is their first shot.

00:42:12It is indeed for Michael Kiernan.

00:42:14It's from a relatively handy angle.

00:42:25And that sort of sums up the luck that the Irish have had today.

00:43:13he always seems to be unsettled very early.

00:43:20There's just a listlessness about that Irish shepherd at the moment.

00:43:29They've got plenty of speed and talent,

00:43:31and this man Ringland is a very good winger.

00:43:38But they just look to be going through the motions out there.

00:43:50which saw them out to a 16-0 lead inside the first 15 minutes.

00:45:02because it didn't get to ground,

00:45:03mainly because of Burke being there.

00:45:05But on the subject of David Campisi,

00:45:08and we must face it that he is a player that I guess

00:45:12people all around the world are talking about,

00:45:14and with the Bledisloe Cup coming up,

00:45:16there's little doubt that the people in New Zealand

00:45:19will be watching the performance of Campisi.

00:45:22Campisi is, as I say, I believe is a very good fullback.

00:45:27He should be left in the position all the time

00:45:30if he's the man to take the job,

00:45:32but switching back and forth between wing and fullback

00:45:35doesn't do him any good whatsoever.

00:45:37So I think Jones has got to make up his mind.

00:45:39He either plays him as a fullback or a winger

00:45:42and go on with it.

00:45:43And this is a sad sight.

00:53:37who has looked very, very lethal in the last ten minutes

00:53:42and Trevor Allen, as a former Wallaby captain

00:53:44you would be breathing a lot better now than you were before the match.

00:53:47Certainly, there's no doubt about it

00:53:49and full credit to the Australian side

00:53:51as we've said earlier, without repeating

00:53:53just to say that they came under a great deal of criticism

00:53:56they jumped pretty well

00:53:57they had a few hiccups in the early part of the game

00:53:59overcame the problem

00:54:00and have got right on top of Ireland

00:54:02and they've got on top basically

00:54:04because the Fords have taken control

00:54:06their backs have not played the flippant football

00:54:08that I suggested they played against Japan

00:54:11they're looking more like an Australian back line

00:54:13and of course Campisi is adding that little bit of zest to them.

00:54:17So that's how we see it here at half time at the Concord Oval

00:54:19three first half tries have been the principal reason

00:54:22why the Australians are leading the Irish

00:54:24by 24 points to nil at the break.

00:54:27And we'll return to Brendan Telfer and Trevor Allen

00:54:32Well Matty Blackburn, I was told by the Irish management

00:54:35before this World Cup started

00:54:37that this particular Irish back line

00:54:39was probably the best of all time in Irish history

00:54:43I would hate to see their worst.

00:54:45So would I.

00:54:46One can be quite scathing about the approach

00:54:48that Ireland are taking to this match

00:54:51they've been completely negative

00:54:53in anything that they've been doing.

00:54:55The only one occasion that I thought

00:54:56that they could have done something about it

00:54:58was a crawl pass to Michael Kernan

00:55:01and as a result their move broke down.

00:55:04They'll need a miracle to come out of this.

00:55:08I'm looking to chase 50 more.

00:55:11Heavens above.

00:55:14The Irish team, another bad factor of their play

00:55:17is their almost total lack of support play isn't it?

00:55:20Yes.

00:55:21I think the biggest problem is

00:55:22they haven't got a loose loosey

00:55:24and the time that the ball does come out

00:55:27and the Irish try to do something with it

00:55:30and when it breaks down

00:55:32there's just no Irish forward within Cooey

00:55:34and from there the Australians just launch back onto attack

00:55:37and the Irishmen, they're getting the ball

00:55:40in very good positions at times

00:55:42but they just don't know what to do with it

00:55:44and I think the fullback in the Irish team

00:55:49is very similar to the Fijian fullback

00:55:50and all they want to do is kick it

00:55:52and I think that the Irishmen

00:55:54have really got to take the game to the Australians

00:55:56in the backs and just run hard and straight

00:55:58and see what comes about after that

00:56:00but they're just not doing it.

00:56:02Well the Irish team even at the half time break

00:56:04appear to have split into two camps.

00:56:06There's no sense of unity there.

00:56:07Donald Lenehan was trying to instill some cohesion

00:56:11into his back line

00:56:12but really for these Irish supporters

00:56:14it's all bad news.

00:56:19What do you think of the Australian effort Bernie?

00:56:21They've got 24 points on the board

00:56:23and against an Irish team which isn't playing well

00:56:25how well are Australia playing?

00:56:27Well for a team to be playing badly

00:56:30and score that many points

00:56:32they can't really be too bad.

00:56:35They seem as if they're a wee bit disjointed at times

00:56:41but I don't know whether it's the fact

00:56:45that there's so much pressure on them

00:56:47outside of rugby

00:56:49and they seem to be going alright

00:56:53but I still don't think we've seen the Australian side

00:56:55of say even two years ago

00:56:57so if they hit these traps

00:56:59they can play a lot better than that.

00:57:51to get back into this World Cup

00:57:53against an Australian side that at last

00:57:55is starting to fire in this World Cup

00:57:57and maybe what Alan Jones said to me

00:57:59during the week is right

00:58:00that he claims that one or two of the fancy teams

00:58:02in this World Cup have peaked too early

00:58:04they haven't paced themselves right.

00:58:08And he feels the Australian team

00:58:10have got themselves into the right momentum

00:58:12just shifting it up a gear with each match

00:58:14and that essentially is what has happened

00:58:16with this Wallaby team.

00:58:18They have improved little by little in each match

00:58:20and today they've taken a quantum leap in improvement

00:58:23and are well on their way to the semi-finals.

00:58:31The old adage that the Irish play well

00:58:33and they are the underdogs

00:58:35well this is the time for them to prove

00:58:37the worth of that saying

00:58:38because they are well and truly the underdogs at the moment

00:58:40as Liner takes the tap kick

00:58:42pushing it down the open side of the paddock

00:58:44Trevor Ringland is there

00:58:46but he left it for Hugo McNeil

00:58:48and he's testing Campisi

00:58:50but Campisi really hasn't put a foot wrong

00:59:58they know each other's play well

01:01:35and I think he's going to kick for goal right on halfway

01:01:37so this is a big kick for Michael Koenig

01:01:41he's only had one shot at goal

01:01:43so that's another interesting indication

01:01:47a very disciplined performance in the first half

01:01:49Koenig was only able to kick for goal once

01:01:55and earlier we talked about the victories

01:01:57that Ireland have had against Australia

01:01:59particularly in this country

01:02:01and what really destroyed us

01:02:03several years back

01:02:05was that goal kicker Ollie Campbell

01:02:07he really was a thorn in the Australian side

01:37:57punched very close together in the midfield and so patrick with a little kick ahead but it's

01:38:01ricocheted ricocheted off the irish boot i think it might have been knocked forward

01:38:06as well by an australian and so the scrum to take place right underneath the the irish posts

01:38:12philip matthews he's been in the wars this afternoon has had another knock

01:38:18and it all looks if he might require some medical attention as well

01:38:23yes well the australian backs in that last movement when i thought that we had a great

01:38:27opportunity of going in and the dying moments of this game here comes the movement now let's see

01:38:32how close and tight they are out wide in front of the goal post because it comes out fairly

01:38:37cleanly as you can see but they're not all in the picture but there were three or four of them

01:38:42really within arm's length of each other which makes it very difficult to

01:38:46to get the ball away and they were not standing far enough back

01:38:52and so the scrum to go down

01:38:57island with the loose head but it's right underneath their own posts and again the big

01:39:02australian scrum trying to wheel the irish off the ball spallane coming away with it

01:39:11and this in willie anderson who lays it back nicely for matthews it's just better play from

01:39:16the irish forwards perhaps if we'd seen more of this in the first 20 minutes the australians may

01:39:19not have posted those three quick tries and island could still have been in the match

01:39:23campisi controls it well that's his 22

01:39:32mcneil his opposite number and as he found touch he has so when we look back at this match we can

01:39:40see very clearly that the winning of it took place in a space of eight minutes between the 17th and

01:39:44the 25th minute of the first half in the space of seven eight minutes australia posted three tries

01:39:50and went from six nil to 24 nil and they've been in control ever since

01:39:57the irish have had their moment since then but that's really all they've been

01:40:04certainly island now not looking a very good side at all

01:40:08they're waiting for that final bell and of course it is the end of their run in the world cup series

01:40:15well i guess 1987 just wasn't meant to be the year for the irish they haven't had much luck

01:40:19they lost their key loose forward nigel carr someone claimed he's the best loose forward in

01:40:23europe he was out with an accident a few weeks a few days in fact before the irish team were due

01:40:29to leave for new zealand and they haven't had much luck since they've been down here either

01:40:35he's crossing having a little run it's there for bradley on halfway dean should i say mcneil

01:40:41up in fullback erwin pops the ball nicely over the top to trevor england but he's getting away

01:40:47from no one and away he goes back again but the ball stepped into touch

01:41:28there again for bradley and the australian forwards are really going only at half pace

01:41:32at the moment and dean couldn't get away from the ankle tap from lineup

01:41:36and into touch it goes yes if we have a look at the irish campaign for this world cup it's

01:41:44been a chapter of just little niggling things that have gone wrong for them which certainly

01:41:48haven't helped them they lost nigel car then of course their coach mick doyle had that heart

01:41:52scare in wellington he was in hospital for a couple of days then they've had a lot of traveling to do

01:42:00and they haven't had a chance really to settle down but matthews is having a very good last

01:42:04quarter in this match picks up the loose ball and charges towards the line it's there for the irish

01:42:16so absolute delight from the many irish supporters here at the concord over they've got something to

01:42:22cheer about so the irish have outscored the australians in the second half by two tries to

01:42:26one but in the end it's not going to be anywhere near enough but at least it has given some

01:42:30respectability to the scoreline and a lovely little tip there from paul dean and look at big

01:42:36phil or charging like a three-quarter a 17 stone three-quarter picked up beautifully by philip

01:42:42matthews the irish loose four was mcgrath there as well coming into their own at last

01:42:47and a little swivel there by michael kenan and the defense opened up yes and in the dying moments

01:42:55you'll notice that the australian forwards are very slow to come across and cover all this play

01:43:00which the driving forwards of ireland have really carried out the australian forwards

01:43:04who have said the game's all over but it wasn't because here's the breakthrough

01:43:08and a very neat step through beating the defense

01:43:14and the try kenan converted his own try 33 to 15 with the full time about a minute away

01:43:21so the irish have come back with 15 points after the wallabies perhaps understandably going off

01:43:26the boil in the latter stages of this match after they built up that big lead and there

01:43:29is the hooter for full time so the concord oval the australian campaign at last comes alive with

01:43:36a very good performance ahead by 24 to nil they won 33 to 15 and the winning of the match took

01:43:41place in a spell of eight minutes in the first half when they ran in three tries

01:43:47and at full time 33 15 to australia over ireland so in the first semi-final also

01:43:52at concord oval in sydney next saturday it will be australia against france new zealand to play

01:43:57the other semi-final a week from today and that's against the winner of tomorrow's game between

01:44:01wales and england in brisbane we're back with highlights of the lineup with the conversion

01:44:07so the australians they haven't looked too impressive but the fact is on the scoreboard

01:44:11they are looking most impressive out by 12 to nil so another opportunity for the australian backs

01:44:16just five meters from the australian line the control from climbing at the back this is a good

01:45:21must be a psychological boost or advantage for a goal kicker to be kicking at these posts because

01:45:26the crossbar must look so low when you compare where it sits in relation to the height of the

01:45:31uprights

01:45:52and he's having a super game today is the 24 year old queenslander michael liner

01:45:57i'm sure from the australian's point of view nothing could be finer than the sight of michael

01:46:03liner in this sort of form the australians again on the australian on the irish line

01:46:08lineup pepworth and a beautiful support play

01:46:15and matthew burke gets the try and again it started just a few meters from the irish line

01:46:20this is where the australian backs today seem at their most lethal pepworth the little slip

01:46:25pass through to burke and there wasn't a hand laid on him liner with his easiest kick today it's

01:46:3324 points to nil

01:46:39and again those irish forwards are pretty loose but the ball is there for the mcgrath

01:46:42coming in at first five eight on full speed and dean with ringland now there's a little

01:46:47bit of room here for ringland but those orange jerseys swarm them towards the touchline

01:46:55and the irish forwards have been penalized in particular terry kingston

01:47:10going in over the top there and the australians to their relief

01:47:14receive a penalty just a couple of meters from their corner play

01:47:19as on that last move island i thought took the wrong option they came around the blind side

01:47:24and um attacking players on the front side suddenly found a wall of orange jerseys

01:48:04cross and just flew in from the wing flew in the ball drifted away a little from campisi yet

01:48:08but coming on the angle and that just slowed him up enough to allow crossing to get there

01:48:17and a hand in that ruck by an iris forward derrick mcgrath trying to push the ball back

01:48:22but didn't escape the attention of mr anderson the australians with a quick

01:48:25tap liner running hard brig campisi is just a world record he was only a meter away from it

01:48:38and this time it's an australian four that has been penalized

01:48:41well he's a real disciplinarian with the whistle is mr anderson

01:48:46and it was liner that could saw a half gap there and he put on the gas try to ghost his way through

01:48:52and campisi who saw the trial line just a meter away but that's where the defense nailed him

01:48:56back on the iris 22 no way through there for smith wrapped up by philip matthews

01:49:03good play there by lawton papworth the quick hands to campisi

01:49:07this is one of the great things about burke of course is the power of the man watch how when he

01:49:23gets it he senses there is a gap that's campisi with the ball looking for support finds it with

01:49:28miller the loose forward and here he comes with the power steps inside he could see the gap was

01:49:34there and there's the strength of his push-off and over fairly wide out and almost near the back line

01:49:47when you're hot you're hot i suppose and michael liner certainly has got his kicking boots on today

01:49:54liner having a little run but now he's having quite a big run backwards

01:49:58an island finally getting it together in the forwards fire in those irish forwards at last

01:50:02but it's probably a bit too late and there's hugo mcneil up from fullback as well so they're

01:50:08all in there at the moment they're only a few meters short of the australian line and it's

01:50:11there for the australian backs dean kiernan ringland is coming from the right wing crossing

01:50:16but the pass wasn't the best to keep crossing he had to check his stride and that gave the

01:50:20australian defense time to nail him but the australians are caught offside good play there

01:50:27by terry kingston the irish hooker who managed to free it to matthews and eventually it came back

01:50:33to bradley and let's have a look at this fast first of all to cross and you'll see here this

01:50:36last pass from ringland to cross and where he just had to stop and pull it in a bit and

01:50:42the defense managed to catch him the irish 10 meters short of the line spallane

01:50:55hugo mcneil and another try to the irish fullback it was matthews that took play up to more than 10

01:51:33and dean couldn't get away from the ankle tap from lineup

01:51:38and into touch it goes yes if we have a look at the irish campaign for this world cup it's

01:51:44been a chapter of just little niggling things that have gone wrong for them which certainly

01:51:48haven't helped them they lost nigel car then of course their coach mick doyle had that heart

01:51:52scare in wellington he was in hospital for a couple of days then they've had a lot of traveling to do

01:51:56and they haven't had a chance really to settle down but matthews is having a very good last

01:52:04quarter in this match picks up the loose ball and charges towards the line it's there for the irish

01:52:14and a lovely little tip there from paul dean and look at big phil or

01:52:18charging like a three-quarter a 17 stone three-quarter picked up beautifully by philip

01:52:23matthews the irish loose forwards mcgrath there as well coming into their own at last

01:52:28and a little swivel there by michael kenan and the defense opened up and michael kenan converted

01:52:36his own try the final score 33 points to 15 to australia over ireland it was a match which

01:52:42really must rank as one of the worst spectacles of the entire tournament but australia had that

01:52:46decisive period between about the 18th and 25th minute in the first half when they scored three

01:52:51tries and opened up to a 24 points to nil lead well after match reaction from concord oval now

01:52:58here's donald lenohan and andrew slack it was obviously very highly uh the first 25 minutes

01:53:04was something else when they were thinking about that wales test and card up at one stage but

01:53:08no it's a good good day he lost nick far james in the first couple of minutes didn't seem to upset

01:53:13the side at all no i mean we obviously feel that smitty is a great replacement and he proved that

01:53:19although losing someone like nick in the first minute is difficult so it's particularly good

01:53:22effort for the guys to put that out of their head but i mean smithy did the job when he was on there

01:53:26you know the australians seem to really turn on the quarterfinals also the attitude seemed to

01:53:30change yeah well you know as much as we try and build ourselves up for other games i don't think

01:53:35the australian team has had a uh one of their characteristics hasn't been to really switch on

01:53:39for the lower type of test matches but when they count i think we do and that was proven today

01:53:44they're very disappointed um you know we got off to a terrible start and there's no way

01:53:49you can beat australia when you go 15 20 pints down whatever it was but the thing that i was

01:53:53most pleased about again is that you know after 20 minutes our backs were to the wall and we said

01:53:57look we've 60 minutes left in the world cup let's go out and let's have a cut and i was proud of

01:54:01everyone there today they gave everything particularly his tough traveling schedule

01:54:06donald didn't get counted against you well uh i think it did at the start of the competition

01:54:11i think we've done more traveling than any other team in the world cup and as a result of that it

01:54:15took us the first two games to get all that traveling out of our system i thought we came

01:54:19back against tonga while we had a great game and um you know we were slow starting today but

01:54:24you know if it was a 60 minute game forget the first 20 minutes i think we did all right
