00:00:30as they line up for the three new caps, Tuingumala, Preston and of course Graham Purvis down there
00:00:36in the front row number three. That's the All Blacks side for the match this afternoon.
00:00:40Very shortly we'll be hearing from Wayne Shelford down on the sideline. Former All Black Buck
00:00:46Shelford joining us once again in this commentary this afternoon and here is the United States side
00:00:52that will line up against the All Blacks. Eight changes from the team that played against Italy
00:00:57and the captain number four Kevin Swords. So the sun has come to greet us. The referee Efrem
00:01:04Sklar from Argentina. 44 year old accountant from Buenos Aires and he's assisted by Owen Doyle and
00:01:10Steve Hilditch. And away we go then in this second match for the All Blacks in the 1991 World Cup
00:01:22against United States here in Gloucester and John Timu playing out on the right wing side today for
00:01:28the All Blacks and so we come back to the 22 for the restart and a first touch of the ball and
00:01:33test matches for John Preston from Burnside in Christchurch. Big day for him and conditions
00:01:41really couldn't be better now. The sun has come out ready to greet the players onto the field
00:01:46here and Preston with his first drop out and has he made it to the 10 meter line? Don't think he did.
00:01:51Yes the referee says carry on and so the kick is in touch 12 meters on the All Blacks side of halfway.
00:01:59John Preston such a versatile player. Let's call in Wayne Shelford down at the sideline. Wayne
00:02:07conditions really marvelous aren't they? Yeah the conditions are very very good at this present time.
00:02:12The sun's coming out and a little bit of pressure at this present time on both teams are
00:02:17looking for a good ball and looking to start well. United States having first run with the ball taken back in by Joseph Burke their second 5'8".
00:02:28Michael Jones making the tackle there for the All Blacks just on the United States side of halfway
00:02:32and the kick is coming from Chris O'Brien with his left boot has Terry Wright running down towards
00:02:37the corner and Wright pushing it back towards halfway. Good start by the United States.
00:02:44Terry Wright his fourth game at fullback for the All Blacks. Good start by the States.
00:02:49They've got some big forwards especially their two second row men Kevin Swartz and Chuck Tunnicliffe.
00:02:57Touch judge across on the far side Steve Hilditch.
00:03:02And so we come now to the first orthodox line out if you like for the All Blacks to feed.
00:03:07Sean Fitzpatrick 36th test today now becomes the most capped hooker in New Zealand test history.
00:03:13Takes over from Andy Dalton and also Steve McDowell playing in his 37th today. Good tap by Andy Earle.
00:03:22A kick from Preston pushing it up to Igubala is coming quickly down the left wing side
00:03:27but he's a judge to beat offside by the referee.
00:03:34Mr. Suarez from Argentina who's obviously his native tongue is Spanish but he's speaking to
00:03:39the players in English and the United States have opted for the scrum back where the kick
00:03:44was made by Preston a couple of meters out from the 22 and it's halfback Mark Pitcock to feed.
00:03:53Igubal's holding pretty well. Ridnell is the number eight forward.
00:03:57Here again is O'Brien with that educated left foot of it. This is a pretty good looking kick.
00:04:02Right waiting. Ball loose near the line but the referee said there was an arm up in the tackle.
00:04:11Well that was a pinpoint kick quickly taken by a basher. All Blacks spinning it out wide early.
00:04:15Now Faye Guinness gets into the gap. Now Tui Gimana has a bit of a run.
00:04:19Five meters on the All Blacks side of halfway. Andy Earle first man there.
00:04:23Charging onto it goes Sean Fitzpatrick five meters on the American side of halfway
00:04:28and the All Blacks have an early penalty with the ball being killed on the ground.
00:04:40Well actually in fact I thought Fitzpatrick was very lucky not to be penalized himself there
00:04:45because he went down onto the ground and he started to move without releasing the
00:04:49ball immediately and rolled over onto his back and then wanted to release it.
00:04:52But it's a great uh it's a great club this cluster. King's Home Road as they call it.
00:05:01They have a great tradition in rugby football and they've consistently been in the top two or three
00:05:06English clubs in England in the last 25 years. You know famous players some of that you remember
00:05:12Mickey Burton for instance. Peter Butler a fine fullback in his day. Mike Teague in the current
00:05:16side. Peter Kingston who I rated a very fine halfback of the 70s and early 80s. Peter Ford
00:05:22probably the father of number eights in the UK. John Fidler a ginormous lot captain of England.
00:05:28Peter Watkins who was a fine flanker in his day. Rugby club steeped in tradition. First penalty
00:05:34attempt then for John Preston and he's dragged that one away to the left. He's been looked very
00:05:42good in training John Preston. That had plenty of length on it but just dragged away to the left.
00:05:46So no goal. Yes he has. He's been timing the ball beautifully in training hasn't he?
00:05:50Been one of the features of the training.
00:05:54About five minutes gone in the game. No scorers yet.
00:06:00Crowd very much behind the USA here of course. You can imagine that the underdogs.
00:06:05Yeah All Blacks rather limp. He let that one bounce over the touchline. Andy Earl there.
00:06:13Kurt the Roth of the lads down in the front row there.
00:06:24Gary Whetton 54th test today. He's getting very close now to Colin Meads who of course played 55.
00:06:29Sean Fitzpatrick with the throw. 10 meters out from the 22. Beautiful leap by Jones but it was
00:06:36just over his head. It fell into the arms of Sean Lipman number seven for the American Eagles.
00:06:42And there's no halfback there. So in fact it was picked up by Kevin Swords their
00:06:45big captain in second row. All Blacks driving it over the 22 and it's going to come on the
00:06:50All Blacks side by the looks of things. But they can't quite extract it out of there.
00:06:59Graham Purvis packing on the tight end scrum of the All Black scrum in his debut today.
00:07:11Yes. Scrum taken down says the referee.
00:07:23There's New Zealand ball in. I don't think there's much reason or any rhyme or reason in them taking
00:07:27it down. But Purvis will be very pleased to get his test. He'd been sitting on the bench for a
00:07:31long long time without nudging that that first international. Chris O'Brien with his good looking
00:07:41left foot. And that is a nice kick by O'Brien. 26 year old. As I said earlier the top points
00:07:48scorer in United States international rugby history. Just 87 points but bearing in mind
00:07:53they don't play a lot of test matches. So a good look at this line up right on the halfway line.
00:07:59No score on the game yet. All Blacks a bit slow to get started in this one. Taken in by Swords
00:08:07again. United States doing well at the line outs. They've got two very big lock forwards.
00:08:11Away to O'Brien. Here he comes again with the left boot. Rams it up high in the air.
00:08:16Teemu's calling for this one. Oh that's nice work by number 12 Joseph Burke.
00:08:22A spirited start here by the United States. He was only a mile outside.
00:08:35So the chant going round the ground USA. And haven't they made a good start here?
00:08:40It's a nice left foot kick by O'Brien there wasn't it? It's a lovely up and under.
00:08:46Mark Pitcock there to feed.
00:08:53Bit of a decision near the back. Picked up by Swords but it was knocked forward in fact by
00:08:56the number eight for Tony Ridnell. And so the All Blacks have to put him to this defensive scrum.
00:09:03Still just near the 22. Five meters out in fact. You can see the Piddock, the halfback and Ridnell
00:09:08not combining particularly well. They're having a little wee tent talk there in between the
00:09:12lull and play. Basher pushes it forward. Taken by the left winger Eric Whittaker.
00:09:17Falls into the arms of Paul Sheehy. And away he goes but hang on. Come back.
00:09:23Owen Doyle's got the flag up. Yes he just touched it. Just touched the line.
00:09:33All Blacks taking a long time to get started in this game.
00:09:36Well I think that's pretty normal. I mean they will have to a wee bit of settling down again.
00:09:40But these big American forwards in the line out are going quite well.
00:09:45Medley against number five for the United States. That's Chuck Tunnicliffe.
00:09:53They have big boys those second rows. They are bigger than the All Blacks. That's for sure.
00:09:58And that's a nice kick by John Preston. So the All Blacks swing back onto the attack.
00:10:02Two or three meters out from the 22.
00:10:16Talking to Jim Blair earlier. Just saying about how slow they are to start. But he said that
00:10:20you know they're still improving every week. They're getting a wee bit sharper.
00:10:25Kevin Swords doing great work for the Americans. He's the captain today.
00:10:29And Ian Jones is in touch in fact. Well Kevin Swords won the line out cleanly at the front
00:10:34and then drove up 15 meters. Good play.
00:10:42And he's been good down on the ground too. He's been getting the ball back
00:10:45and winning a lot of loose stuff for them. Kevin Swords from Beacon Hill in Boston.
00:10:52He's taken over the captaincy of the side today.
00:10:55Went and gets it on the second take. And the All Blacks get penalized.
00:11:03So we've been going 10 minutes in the game now.
00:11:08And really the United States line hasn't been under threat.
00:11:11All right.
00:11:22Chris O'Brien. Another big kick down field.
00:11:26The pause breaks out again for Chris O'Brien.
00:11:31It just reinforces the principle though that line out's the most important
00:11:35facet of the modern game. You've just got to win your line out ball.
00:11:38A real battle going on between Ian Jones and Chuck Tunnicliffe.
00:11:44Pushing and shoving at each other. That's the frustration that emerges
00:11:48at this time of the game. Have a look at the size of the little man talking. It's magic isn't it?
00:11:55He is a bit like little man. Don't underestimate him. He'll be into them.
00:11:59Yes he's pushing the big fellas apart. Look at him. Can you see him there? Yes I can now.
00:12:04Yeah. So Fitzpatrick with the throw then. But it's gone and a penalty goes against
00:12:11Tunnicliffe. He's determined that he wants to master Ian Jones. But he went outside the laws
00:12:16of the game that time and pushed Jones out of the road. And so now Preston with the clearing kick.
00:12:23Beautifully struck again by John Preston. It's no timing. That's what it's all about with this
00:12:29ball isn't it? Absolutely. You cannot really whack it. You've actually got to stroke it.
00:12:3594.49
00:12:47Pat Johnson with the throw. Swords went high. Seemed to lock it forward. Oops see the referee
00:12:52got knocked over that time by Sean Fitzpatrick. Goodness me.
00:12:57I don't think even a big referee would be in trouble with Sean Fitzpatrick.
00:13:06Okay 10 meter line. Bash it. All black backs haven't really had a run yet. McCahill long pass
00:13:11right in. Jones getting quickly across to try and secure that loose ball as quickly as possible.
00:13:17They've got it again. Now Innes. Innes hands his man off Joseph Burke and away he goes. Back to
00:13:22Tuingumala. 22 meters out from the United States line.
00:13:31All blacks looking to wrestle this one clear. They can't do it and in fact
00:13:37the Argentinian referee says it'll be a scrum for the United States. They had possession.
00:13:44He's going to have a healthy advantage in scrum weight. Mark Pitcock to feed. Coming off the back
00:13:55is Ridnell but it looks like he's coming on the all black side. Fired it away. McCahill has it.
00:13:59Straight across for Timo. Timo trying to run outside his man. There's support from McCahill.
00:14:04Wright is lurking as well. Now Preston feeding Innes. All blacks starting to move it around a
00:14:08little now. Alan Witten gets his hands on it. 22 meter line. Now there's a big lineup for the
00:14:12All Blacks. Preston across to Wright. Good tackle by Paul Sheehy. Now Preston again running it out
00:14:20to Tuingumala. The ball popped away and it was deliberately pushed away. A deliberate floor pass.
00:14:27At least a deliberate knock on as Preston was about to deliver the pass to Tuingumala
00:14:34and the All Blacks have a penalty.
00:14:36And Gary Witten has decided it'll be a shot at goal. So a chance to call him back
00:14:43shelf and down the sideline in a bit of a slow start for the All Blacks back. Yeah it's a very
00:14:47slow start by the All Blacks but one of the areas that I can see that they should be dominating in
00:14:52is the line outs and what they're doing is they're throwing it to Ian Jones in the middle
00:14:58of the line out a lot and to Gary himself and they should be using Steve McDowell,
00:15:02Andy Earle in the at the back of Ian Jones where he's got the height over his own
00:15:06player and over the back and really get the ball going and the Americans are doing a lot of
00:15:12pushing and even though the referee's picking up the penalties I think the All Blacks to be
00:15:16using their ball a little bit more wisely. Back shelf and down at the sideline as John Preston
00:15:23lines up his second penalty attempt having missed after just a couple of minutes play from
00:15:28centrefield this time he's out on a bit of an angle.
00:15:41Nice graceful looking kick by Preston and he has his first points in an All Black jersey.
00:15:47John Preston kicks a penalty goal for the All Blacks after 14 minutes play
00:15:52and they lead by three to nil.
00:15:55Yes he just croaked the ball it's good you like you have confidence now it'll be a big boost
00:16:02very nice timer as every other many people in New Zealand know particularly in Canterbury
00:16:07very fine cricketer too he's one of those chaps you'd describe as an all-around ball player.
00:16:18The US of A is certainly going at it a lot harder than they did against Italy they took
00:16:24about 15 years to wind up there and then they never really got into the game at all this is a
00:16:28far better performance in fact everybody's surprised Wigley beat them so easily. 30 points to nine in
00:16:34that game. Kick-off made by Burke and once again the All Blacks allow it to go dead and we'll go
00:16:45back to the 22 for the restart. Three points to nil. The All Blacks have played on this ground
00:16:52a couple of times before the 1905 All Blacks were here believe it or not Bernie you'd probably
00:16:58you'd probably remember that. 44 points to nil they won that day and then in 72 the All Blacks
00:17:02came here and played the Southwest Counties. Much better restart that time from Preston pushed it
00:17:1010 meters over the 22 and the whistle is gone. All Blacks offside.
00:17:19So this might be another opportunity or at least an opportunity for
00:17:23the United States to put points on the board and Chris O'Brien is going to have a shot at goal.
00:17:29It's a lovely little ground isn't it? Beautifully appointed. Nice surface. Yes great normally rings
00:17:35to the sound of Gloucester, Gloucester, Gloucester. It is tough to beat when they get like that too.
00:17:42It's almost as bad as when whales in the old days used to start to sing when they realized they have
00:17:46a great chance of winning the game. I used to hate playing down here for the Harlequins
00:17:51but now I hate playing down here for the Harlequins. I hate playing down here for the Harlequins.
00:17:57I used to hate playing down here for the Harlequins because they used to call us city slicks and cream
00:18:02puffs and really get into us physically and we were not with a cup full of cold water in the
00:18:05second half normally. This chant at Gloucester used to make it worse or worse as they'd say
00:18:12down here. They were all their hours like gore man. O'Brien from a long way out.
00:18:20Just pushed it away to the right. The crowd across on the far side gave it a chance for a while.
00:18:26But it just drifted away to the right and it remains at three points to nil.
00:18:42Preston pushing it a bit too far this time. Taken by number seven Sean Lipman.
00:18:47Nicely channeled back too by the stage. Now O'Brien's going to kick again. That's obviously
00:18:50the plan. They haven't moved it at all. They're pushing the big ones up for Terry Wright but it's
00:18:54not getting that far this time. Snapped up or trying to snap it up was Preston. Just out from
00:18:58the 22 in all-black territory. United States playing with a lot of heart so far in the game.
00:19:03All blacks haven't really threatened the tri-liners yet. In fact they're defending here.
00:19:12Again the referees are a wee bit quick to blow up. They are. Once the ball goes to ground or
00:19:16the man with the ball goes to ground they're far too quick to blow up. Some of the press and the
00:19:20pundits have been grizzling over here about lack of continuity. We won't have it unless they're
00:19:24allowed to clear ball like that. It was there for the taking. Free kick against the United States.
00:19:30Not putting the ball in quickly enough. Mark Pitcock the halfback. So the all-blacks have a
00:19:34relieving free kick here and Preston will once again look for the touchline. Number two there
00:19:39Pat Johnston. He is a veteran of the 87 World Cup. The hooker. And again a nicely timed kick by John
00:19:47Preston. Went on the New Zealand development tour to Canada last year. States calling a short
00:19:57lineup. They won it again but the ball back in touch. Wouldn't it be great if the hooker Johnson
00:20:04being an American just picked up that ball and used that American throw to throw around the
00:20:07middle of the field. We saw that once against Diddley didn't we? We did it once. The big lateral pass.
00:20:13There's one guy on the team that could do it. Joseph Burke. He trialed with the Dallas Cowboys
00:20:17at one stage. So he's probably capable. Again Bashop across to Preston. Now McCarhill getting
00:20:23Inger in on the job. Big power for all. My word someone went in and drove it on to Engemanu.
00:20:28There's some pumping tackling and it was number six Mark Sawicki. Really committed himself.
00:20:35Almost as good as Farley on some of those Welshmen on Sunday. Good little run here by
00:20:39Bashop. 10 meters out from the 22. All Blacks crunching on here. They've decided to take it
00:20:45up the middle and just settle it down a wee bit. Now Fitzpatrick. Defense has been pretty solid so
00:20:52far. Now the All Blacks have a good lineup. Tuagamanu was putting his boot on and has stayed
00:20:58out on the right wing side. Not sure that he's even got the boot on as yet. Still going. No he hasn't.
00:21:04Five meters out from the goal line as the All Blacks take it once again into the setup.
00:21:09They're going to spin it around. Away goes Ian Jones. All Blacks getting it up very close to
00:21:15the line now and in fact looking for the try line but it's not quite there.
00:21:21Halfway through the first half. Three points to nil.
00:21:24Halfway through the first half. Three points to nil.
00:21:32And although you can't see him at the moment Inge has gone to put his boot on.
00:21:39As we pause for an injury break. Well Illkirten. We're a quarter of the way through the game
00:21:45and all the All Blacks have been able to produce so far as a penalty goal.
00:21:48They're slightly loose as Buck was saying. They weren't winning lineouts at the beginning.
00:21:56All credit the Americans who were playing very well at that stage too. Particularly in lineouts.
00:22:00But they're now starting to put it together. They'll use this crashing driving play that
00:22:04they're so good at. And this is one of the men to do it. He's lost his boot.
00:22:09But it doesn't stop going on and on and on. Very strong man.
00:22:14Big powerful run by Inge Tuigamala. Setting it up there. Ball free.
00:22:20And they rolled off him a wee bit there. And were a wee bit unlucky to have missed out on a try.
00:22:25Ian Jones has pulled it away. Got slightly isolated.
00:22:32Played nine games for the All Blacks but this is his first test match.
00:22:36As you can see there in your picture what a marvellous opportunity would be just to straight
00:22:41ball to Inge. Five yards out. Inge Tuigamala that is. He's half back.
00:22:45Oh no sorry it's John Teeman. What a great move. Just to John Teeman and have a go at his man.
00:22:52No one there at all. All Blacks look as though they're going to try for the pushover here.
00:22:55Held in the back by Andy Earl. First try coming up. Scored by Andy Earl.
00:23:01It's taken 20 minutes for the All Blacks to get across the line.
00:23:04But they had the superior shove on the United States scrum that time.
00:23:08And Andy Earl gets try number one today to make it seven points to nil.
00:23:16Well here it is. He picks it up. Again the ploy was on. But the scrum was disintegrating.
00:23:22The American scrum or the USA scrum. And it was no stopping Andrew Earl.
00:23:27Good solid scrum here by the All Blacks. And Earl was able to drive it low and hard.
00:23:32And crashes over the line. The referee right on the spot.
00:23:35And Andy Earl has his third test try in his 11th test match.
00:23:41Andy Earl started with the Baby Blacks way back in 1986.
00:23:59No goal from John Preston. So he has kicked one penalty. One out of three so far for Preston.
00:24:04Seven points to nil. The All Blacks lead after the try scored by Andy Earl.
00:24:10Whittaker didn't have much show of stopping Andrew Earl there. Whittaker would be about
00:24:14ten and a half staying by the look of him. And only about five foot six. A real bundle of fire.
00:24:18But not much chop when you're five yards short of the goal line. Just trying to stop a big number eight.
00:24:28And so the restart from halfway. The drop kick from O'Brien.
00:24:31Down for Preston. And Preston this time will have to kick for touch.
00:24:47So once again the United States calling the short line out. Breaking up the All Black pattern.
00:24:52And there was an infringement in there. Well the USA number five was penalized for coming in
00:25:00more than five yards outside the line of the line. Michael Jones made the break now with us.
00:25:04Away to Preston. Holds up the pass for McCarhill. And Terry Wright scores for the All Blacks.
00:25:17Well that's more like it. The All Blacks tapped it just on their own side of halfway.
00:25:21Michael Jones made the initial burst. And they ran it to the left. And Terry Wright
00:25:28as we see John Preston across to McCarhill. Probably Bernie McCarhill could have made it
00:25:33himself. But he popped it up for Terry Wright. And the man who used to play on the left wing
00:25:38scores down the left wing side. Yes well it was a good setup. And they ran from right inside their
00:25:44own half. And it was a lovely run by Innes particularly. And here again Preston using
00:25:48his brains notice. And holding in. Hiding the winger. So there was no way that he could run
00:25:54off and cover the three men. And it's a simple try as we all know to Terry Wright. That's the
00:25:59sort of stuff that the crowd and I should say most of the Pacific are looking for in terms of
00:26:05the All Blacks playing against the US of A. Scrum disintegrated slightly and made it difficult
00:26:10for the US to cover. Wide angle conversion attempt by John Preston.
00:26:17Just missed. Good attempt by Preston from wide out. So the All Blacks have scored two unconverted
00:26:27tries and a penalty by John Preston. 11 points to nil now. Terry Wright has racked up his 16th try
00:26:34in test matches. Has the wind gone out of the US of A team? They scrummed and played
00:26:43the line out brilliantly for the first 20 minutes.
00:26:4823 minutes gone. Maybe we should call on Buck Shelford down on the sideline. It's
00:26:51just starting to open up a little bit now Buck. Yeah the All Blacks have finally got their A's
00:26:56and the G really. And they're starting to play good football. They're winning quality ball now
00:27:00and starting to run the Americans around. I think the Americans are starting to tire a little bit
00:27:06at this stage. But they are mixing up their options and they're making the All Blacks think.
00:27:10But the Americans just can't do anything with the ball that they're
00:27:12actually getting because they're under a lot of pressure in the lineouts and in the scrums.
00:27:18Buck Shelford joining us in the commentary this afternoon
00:27:21through Television New Zealand's One World of Sport. Thrown by Pat Johnson for the States.
00:27:28And Gary Whetton is called for the scrum infield.
00:27:30The ground is just a little bit greasy on top. But I think the ball is fine to handle.
00:27:44It all goes to the blind side. A little tap ahead by Bashop and the team who tries to pick it up.
00:27:52And probably a good swift boot might have been the answer.
00:27:56Here's a little grubber kick. A bit of the old-fashioned dribbling.
00:28:04Mark Pitcock with the put in the scrum screwing around 390 degrees. But it's come back on the
00:28:09All Blacks side. Well someone must have hacked it through there. Preston with a nice little
00:28:12kick judged through. Hicked ahead by Craig Innes. Now the race is on. Eric Whittaker going back for
00:28:18the States. He missed it. Taken in by the right wing three-quarter Gary Hine. But the All Blacks
00:28:23are there in numbers. Bashop pops it up across to McCarhill. All Blacks getting pretty close to
00:28:28the line once again as they take it into the setup. Well that was started with a lovely little
00:28:36kick through by John Preston. Yes he it was it was good because unlike most first five eights
00:28:42they don't run it up to the the gap. They try to push it through from about 10 yards in front of
00:28:47their man. He went right up to the hole and slipped it through and made it very easy for Innes to run
00:28:52onto. First scrum's collapsed so we go back to this five meter scrum. In fact it's probably a
00:29:00little closer than that. Bashop runs it across. Pops it up for McCarhill. Is Andy Earl going
00:29:12towards the post again. Just a couple of meters short. Ball comes back. It's loose. Now Bashop
00:29:19across to Wright. Wright heading for the corner again and Terry Wright.
00:29:29But that brilliant pace of his. Terry Wright has gone and this time in the right-hand corner
00:29:34after having previously scored in the left. That's his second for the day
00:29:38and the All Blacks now lead by 15 to nil. That's their third try. Yes it was a lovely little setup
00:29:44here. This is this double switch that they do with the number eight and Andrew Earl almost got
00:29:49through and then away it comes out to Wright. The great thing about him is even though he's a winger
00:29:55a lot of wingers take a lot of time to get weaving but he accelerates so quickly. Look at that just
00:29:59going past two men with only a couple of yards to move laterally. Great acceleration but then
00:30:04we know that he is probably one of the fastest men playing rugby in the world present time. Nicely
00:30:09set up there by Andy Earl and then a good pass by Graham Bashop. The All Blacks just lost it for a
00:30:13moment then Bashop spotted Wright way out on the wing and it was a good pass and although the
00:30:18defence came across Terry Wright far too quick and Preston has converted from the sideline.
00:30:25That's a real confidence booster for John Preston and the All Blacks now out to 17 points to nil.
00:30:43So
00:31:03well there it is. Mark Williams is to kick off the United States now.
00:31:07A good try and a good build up and they're really hitting their straps now the the All Blacks.
00:31:18And you can see the look on the faces of the Americans as they're down they're quite down.
00:31:23Kick-off taken by Williams. Nicely taken by Alan Whetton for the All Blacks. There was a man in
00:31:27front there. Unquestionably the referee let him carry on. The number eight forward Tony Ridnell
00:31:32again Bashop with that little kick down the blind side. Eric Whitaker is the
00:31:36blonde-headed left winger for the States and his kick is out on the full.
00:31:4624 year old from California. You can tell with the golden hair goes with the beaches.
00:31:53I suggest he was bleached.
00:31:58Gary Whetton then. I thought that he had had a run there. Whitaker because they're not winning
00:32:02much ball and I thought every opportunity now a winger like that would have a go.
00:32:05Good line out work by Alan Whetton. Gary Whetton charges off into the
00:32:10United States defense and immediately one of the players dives in over the top. Number seven Sean
00:32:15Lipton. All Blacks carried on quickly. Jones has trouble getting a hold of it and he finally does
00:32:19bring it under control. Snapped up by Earl. All Blacks lining both ways. Fitzpatrick has stayed
00:32:24out. So also has Alan Whetton as John Teemu goes on a bit of a run. Just losing the ball forward
00:32:31though. 10 meters out from the line and it's going to be cleared or is it? Bounced off one of the
00:32:37All Blacks and back into the arms of Chris O'Brien. His kick is near touch but Terry Wright has it.
00:32:44Wright's going to run it across field. All Blacks opening it up. McCahill got through a rather weak
00:32:47tackle. Looking for Graham Purvis. All Blacks not finding their men at this stage. Now Basham
00:32:55across to Tuigamala. Has his man on Gary Hine. Pushing his way out of trouble. Tuigamala. Look
00:33:01at the strength of the ball. And finally it comes back on the United States side.
00:33:0615 meters out from the line. All Blacks ahead by 17 points to nil.
00:33:11And back it goes from Pidcock. And the clearing kick is made by O'Brien. It's not finding touch
00:33:19again. Tuigamala brings it out into the center field. Good pass to Terry Wright. All Blacks
00:33:24have a show here. McCahill and McCahill gets a high line. Referee said no. No I don't think it was.
00:33:32Well he has pinged it for it but it wasn't too bad. No it wasn't for the head high. It was for
00:33:38offside in fact. Well it saved a try didn't it.
00:33:49So Graham Basham has it on the mark. The All Blacks not bothering to kick the goal.
00:33:54Lots of interesting bookmakers odds on this match which I'll give you pretty shortly.
00:34:01All Blacks working a move. Mistakes creeping into the All Black game.
00:34:09He didn't know the call. He didn't know he was going to get it. He knew he had looked at the
00:34:13ball. He ran the dummy. Well Alex Wiley and John Hart won't be particularly happy with that.
00:34:20No they won't because of their incredibly high standards as they said. Even in a game like this
00:34:25they have that word that's used forever. Focusing on goals etc. New modern psychological jargon.
00:34:33So Chris O'Brien to clear from the 22. 17 points to nil the All Blacks lead. That's a lovely kick
00:34:42again. Beautiful kick by O'Brien has taken play back to the 10 metre line in All Black territory.
00:34:50Chris O'Brien in his 15th test. Well the All Blacks have had
00:34:54over two-thirds of the possession in the game so far.
00:34:57The bookies odds today. 50 to 1 that New Zealand would fail to score. Well that's gone.
00:35:05Pretty miserable odds really when you consider it. Now Preston across to Ennis. Jabs it ahead.
00:35:09Rather too far though. Straight into the arms of Paul Sheehy the fullback. Sheehy right on halfway.
00:35:16I think the All Blacks might have turned him on their side of the ruck as well.
00:35:20But Steve McDowell in there trying to rip it off with his powerful arms. McDowell has done that.
00:35:25Now Preston. Oh it's been charged. There's a chance for Joseph Buick. Good tackle in the end by Preston
00:35:31who tipped him and then McCahill drove in and completed it. 20 metres out from the line.
00:35:36Chance for the States if they can clear it quickly. And offside against the All Blacks.
00:35:48Referee pointing to the All Black who's left on the ground.
00:35:52We have a look at the replay. The little kick through by Preston was charged by Buick and he
00:35:58had the goal line ahead of him. Preston managed to tip him and then when he got to his feet
00:36:03McCahill drove in and completed the tackle. But in the end it was Steve McDowell who was penalised.
00:36:09I think more for crapping on the ground than anything else. Trying to rip the ball away on the ground.
00:36:13So Mark Williams will attempt to convert this into points. O'Brien had the first shot at goal.
00:36:21He's a left-footed kicker so it's better for him I guess on the right-hand side of the field.
00:36:43So Mark Williams guides it through. The United States are on the board. The All Blacks lead by 17 points to three.
00:37:00And over half an hour gone now in the first spell.
00:37:08Well that was a popular penalty goal. The crowd loved that. The United States on the board. Mark Williams.
00:37:1330 year old who was actually born in the United Kingdom.
00:37:28So about seven or eight minutes remaining in the first half.
00:37:31The All Blacks won't be totally satisfied with this performance so far. They've made a lot of errors.
00:37:38Taps out. Tapped by Ian Jones. Ball channeled nicely. Up it goes for Inger again.
00:37:50Standing in the tackle. Now they've released it up for Michael Jones. Basham.
00:37:55Straight across for Ennis. Good hands here. Wright gets into the gap looking for Timu. Jones was there.
00:38:02Just two metres short of the line. All Black forwards arriving quickly. They've got to free
00:38:06it quickly if they can. Feet get to work. Basham. Now Preston. Ennis. Popped up again for Preston.
00:38:13Preston trying to run Tuigamala in. Tuigamala tries to snap it up. Lost it behind him. McCarhill
00:38:20carries it on. Ian Jones first man there. Still 10 metres up from the line. The United States
00:38:25defence holding. And just a slight lack of communication between Preston and Tuigamala
00:38:31when they ran that cross. Obviously Tuigamala should have stayed on his wing because Preston
00:38:34was trying to run him in. You said he lost it behind there. I think Tuigamala was calling,
00:38:40or should I say McCarhill called behind Tuigamala to flick it through his legs.
00:38:46Michael Jones lost his boot in that movement. He's got it back on. So away we go again.
00:38:53Andy Earl has trouble picking it up. He didn't knock it on either.
00:38:56And a penalty for the All Blacks. Once again the USA going down. Diving in over the top.
00:39:07The referees have been particularly vigilant in that area.
00:39:12Yes they have. And it's been good to see too that some of the critics of the English press
00:39:17were getting very upset about the fact that Jim Fleming in the England New Zealand game had given
00:39:23too much or too many penalties in New Zealand because England were killing the ball.
00:39:27And Carling sort of made wise cracks about it too. A bit wrong for Carling and for Gascon. It'd be
00:39:34the best thing that ever happened for them because they'd get so much fast ball. They'd be able to
00:39:38use the space that it does create. Quick balls, midfield, centres. And they would look a far
00:39:44better back line because of it. But in the initial periods because it's ingrained in English forwards
00:39:49and in a lot of other European forwards they go over first to kill the ball. Back to scrums crazy.
00:40:02So John Preston with this opportunity to kick the penalty from a handy position.
00:40:08And he has guided it through. So John Preston kicks a penalty goal to give the All Blacks
00:40:13a 20 points to three advantage. That's his second penalty.
00:40:17And he also converted one of the Terry Wright tries. So eight points so far today for John
00:40:21Preston. The All Blacks in this first half have scored three tries. Two of them to Terry Wright
00:40:27and one to Andy Earle.
00:40:37So a few minutes remaining in the first half.
00:40:40A rather a stop start performance by the All Blacks. They I think were initially shaken by the
00:40:45ferocity of the American Eagles in the first 10 minutes or so.
00:40:49But they seem to settle it. But just in the last few minutes Earle a few mistakes have
00:40:53been creeping in. Yes it's it's just the fact that they're not playing quite as tightly as
00:40:58they would against a good side. They're looking a wee bit for the the odd plumb and it's a
00:41:03it's a natural reaction really.
00:41:15Preston from the 22.
00:41:23Ian Jones charging through onto it. It's taken in there by Tunnicliffe
00:41:26for the United States. Nicely delivered ball again. O'Brien hasn't passed all day.
00:41:31Again he pumps it high. Wright waits again.
00:41:36No fair catch awarded but the All Blacks I think have the ball on their side of the
00:41:40ruck. Yes they do. Basher brings it out. Wild pass across to Innes. He knocks it on.
00:41:46Once again mistakes.
00:41:50Basher was under a lot of pressure. It was an awkward pass for Craig Innes.
00:41:54Once again what a pinpoint kick from Chris O'Brien.
00:42:01That's a fact that Wright took it. I don't know if the referee could hear him.
00:42:05Now Pitcock. Could be a drop kick here. O'Brien. No he's away to the right.
00:42:16And that indeed is halftime. Just as Chris O'Brien misses with a drop kick
00:42:20and at halftime here at King's Home in Gloucester the All Blacks in their second pool match
00:42:26at the 1991 World Cup lead USA by 20 points to three.
00:42:35All Blacks have had a good chat at halftime. No doubt have discussed a number of things that
00:42:40happened in that first 40 minutes. They wouldn't be entirely happy with the way things went.
00:42:44They lead by 20 points to three at the break. Three tries. Two to Terry Wright. One to Andy Earl.
00:42:49And John Preston has kicked a couple of penalties and a conversion and
00:42:53Mark Williams has kicked the penalty goal for the state. So 20 points to three
00:42:58as we are about to turn around and get going again in the second half. Graham Purvis there
00:43:03in his test debut. And the other two players having their first matches for the All Blacks
00:43:09today and in a test game that is. John Preston and Vahenga Tuigamala.
00:43:18Lovely town Gloucester. About 130 miles west of London. Not too far from Wales down here.
00:43:29So we're almost set to go here in the second spell.
00:43:34Referee's taking the full five minutes.
00:43:42Second half then underway as John Preston for the All Blacks. They lead at the break by 20 points to
00:43:46nil. And they'll be looking for a more impressive performance in the second spell I'm sure as Chris
00:43:53O'Brien who impressed with his ability to put the high up and under in the first half. Some testing
00:44:00kicks on Terry Wright. Now to the first line out and the state started the line out. So
00:44:06Kirpin very very well in the game didn't they? I don't know why they've actually faded away lately.
00:44:11I don't think we should have line out time unless they're being absolutely screwed at scrum time.
00:44:16Alan Whetton got up high for the All Blacks but there was some pushing going on there.
00:44:20Climbing over the back of him.
00:44:25This Senor Sklar he's had a very good game as a referee. He's been very positive. It's been a
00:44:30positive feature of the whole game. He's been trying to one to keep players on their feet.
00:44:34Two he's quite intent to let it go. It's been a good performance by him. Yes I think he impressed
00:44:39the All Blacks at Tucumán earlier this year. In that Argentinian tour. That's right. Yes it was
00:44:43a night game and there was a lot of fervor and passion around and he did a very good job.
00:44:49So Chris O'Brien pushes the United States side back in the All Black territory.
00:44:53Eight meters on the All Black side of halfway. A couple of minutes into the second spell
00:44:58and again the referee's going to insist on the gap in the lineouts. Andy Earle got up high. Yet
00:45:04he didn't take it cleanly though. Put pressure on Bashop but Bashop cleared nicely for Preston
00:45:09who pumps it up for Tuinkamanu to come running on to and nicely played by Gary Hine the experienced
00:45:15right winger. Played a lot of rugby. The man on the right wing side for the States
00:45:22and that was good work. Tuinkamanu was bearing down.
00:45:32There's this one feature though. There's not many referees in the world that actually let
00:45:35rucks go for very long are there? Now Bashop, Preston misses McCarhill this time in a straight
00:45:41out to Timu. Timu's going to have his man on Whitaker. Has support there from Terry Wright
00:45:46but the pass is dropped in field. In fact it went forward. So once again a mistake made by
00:45:52the All Blacks out wide. Seeing a lot more of Terry Wright ranging wide on the wings the way
00:46:00he does for Auckland in this match. Yes so he should be. I mean I think that was one of the
00:46:05features of the English game where a lot of the press there and the pundits were very disappointed
00:46:10with New Zealand back play because they went all the ball, had a lot of the scrums and in the
00:46:15second half particularly with Dominic they weren't raging and rampaging free or sending it directly
00:46:20off the blind side to both Wright and to Kirwan and I think they disappointed the crowd or should
00:46:26I say the pundits somewhat. Lovely kick there by Mark Williams from insiders 22. The All Blacks
00:46:32back on their own 10 meter line. Fitzpatrick to throw. Andy Earl very very high but once again
00:46:45a penalty in the line out. This time it's against number eight for the United States Tony Ritnell
00:46:52and so Preston from his own 10 meter line is going to look for the touchline
00:46:56on the main stand side of the ground.
00:47:00Towering away downfield lovely kick again by John Preston
00:47:04spiraling away down to a line out 15 meters out
00:47:11from the American line.
00:47:15Marvelous to see him fire one out of the middle.
00:47:18Pat Johnson for the States on defense. Oh a lovely take there by Kevin Swords and
00:47:23what have we got this time? There are penalties all over the place in the line outs
00:47:26and it's for the All Blacks this time. Gary Whitten says wait wait he wants to set it here
00:47:34not bothering to kick for goal.
00:47:36Some of these moves have gone a bit astray today. Let's see if they can get this one right.
00:47:40Graham Bashor 50 meters infield has McDowell beside him. McDowell's got to take it up.
00:47:46He's got to run the blind side where Alan Whitten is ranging.
00:47:49Whitten drives up to within five meters of the line.
00:47:54He's got to run the blind side of the line.
00:47:56He's got to run the blind side of the line.
00:47:58He's got to run the blind side of the line.
00:48:00He's got to run the blind side of the line.
00:48:02Within five meters of the line.
00:48:06All Blacks have the ball in there.
00:48:10Driving it over the line and scoring.
00:48:19Let's see who comes up last with the ball. Graham Purvis.
00:48:21Well what a way to start your chess career.
00:48:24Graham Purvis gets the try and that's the All Blacks fourth and it's 24 points to three.
00:48:32Yes well there's nothing like scoring a try on your debut test.
00:48:40Good drive here. Good move too. Not kicking for goal New Zealand and then
00:48:45driving it forward with all the enthusiasm out of the world with Purvis.
00:48:49Never going to let it go to anybody else.
00:48:51Thought it's been a great day for me already to get a test and I'll get one too. He did.
00:48:56Again though the man who's putting a tremendous effort in for America
00:49:00is then number four in Captain Swords.
00:49:03He was wrapping him up. He was desperate to keep him out.
00:49:06Exhorting the rest as you could hear of the players to help out.
00:49:14Preston with a conversion attempt and it's just a way to the left.
00:49:18So Preston fails to convert the try scored by Graham Purvis.
00:49:2224 points to three. That's Purvis's first try for the All Blacks
00:49:26in his 14th game and a try on his test debut.
00:49:30So a marvellous moment for the Waikato front row prop. 24 points to three
00:49:36and we've been going about eight minutes in the second half.
00:49:46The drop kickoff from Chris O'Brien. Falling forward is Andy Earl.
00:49:52Earl sets it near the 22.
00:49:56Bashop for Preston and that's another good clearing kick by John Preston.
00:50:02Well his goal kicking hasn't always been on target today
00:50:05but certainly his punting has been most impressive.
00:50:09He's just missing with the goal kicking too. He struck that very well and the wind
00:50:13just took it the last moment away from the post.
00:50:15His last conversion and the one previous to that too.
00:50:22Four tries to nil so far for the All Blacks.
00:50:24Gary Whetton got up very high but I think the United States might have dragged this one in too.
00:50:28Two very big block forwards.
00:50:31Maka comes for a halfback Pitcock.
00:50:33Letting it go this time is O'Brien straight to Williams.
00:50:36That's a poor kick though. Straight down to Terry Wright
00:50:38and Wright is able to quickly turn and punch it down towards the left-hand corner
00:50:42and that's an excellent kick by Terry Wright.
00:50:46Such a versatile all-rounder this fellow isn't he?
00:50:48Yes he set himself, steadied it down and did very much like Fox kicks.
00:50:52That low trajectory rolling over and over into touch.
00:50:56Nice timing.
00:51:01Another one of the All Blacks that started against the Baby Blacks
00:51:04for the Baby Blacks against France in 86.
00:51:07Now a vastly experienced player Terry Wright.
00:51:10Great jump by Swords again. Beautiful.
00:51:13Went forward, back, dummy. Did you see him?
00:51:15And then got up and got two hands on it.
00:51:17Marvellous exhibition of point out work.
00:51:20Tuigumara does keep it in the field of play cleverly and away he goes.
00:51:24Straight through the gap he goes.
00:51:26Hands it up to his mate Michael Jones but the ball didn't quite make it to Jones
00:51:32and the States have it but the All Blacks go crunching in.
00:51:35Good open up here though. Good spot tackle by Tuigumara this time.
00:51:39All Blacks snaffle up the loose ball quickly through Gary Whetton inside the 22.
00:51:44Handing it back to McDowell.
00:51:47There it is now for Basham.
00:51:50And whistle is gone.
00:51:52A little knock on on the ground by one of the All Blacks.
00:51:55Basham he accused of it.
00:51:56I didn't think it.
00:51:57I thought it actually hit his boot and came forward and then got his hand down to it.
00:52:01But so what? We're splitting straws.
00:52:03Tuigumara really looking to work out on the left wing side.
00:52:06Basham in to try and disrupt his opposite man Bedcock
00:52:10and he got him before the ball
00:52:13and the referee picked it up and has called for the penalty.
00:52:20Yes I think it'd be a bit better if Tuigumara too from an All Black point of view
00:52:28did get two hands on it as Buck Shelford down on the sidelines suggested
00:52:34a moment or two ago and made sure that his pass actually made the man running in support.
00:52:38In that case it was Michael Jones.
00:52:40So Brian pushes the ball up to five meters on the United States side of halfway.
00:52:5220 points to three at halftime.
00:52:5324 points to three now.
00:52:57The big problem with the Americans is that their back row just don't get there fast enough.
00:53:00I think their tight man are playing quite well.
00:53:02Particularly Swords as I have been saying.
00:53:05He really is the sharp end of their both attack and defense.
00:53:08Ian Jones got that one for the All Blacks.
00:53:10He was still being held down but he managed to get a hand on it.
00:53:14Tuigumara didn't take the pass I think was meant for him but it was snapped up by Preston.
00:53:18Oh look at this.
00:53:19The States have in good New Zealand style have turned the All Blacks over.
00:53:23Now Kevin Swords ranging out wide.
00:53:25It's Patrick and McKay who'll make the tackle but they've set it up nicely.
00:53:28They're playing some good rugby here.
00:53:30Burke gets inside a rather weak attempt by Graham Basham to put him down.
00:53:33The All Blacks try and free it and Hidcock tried to whip it across towards Gary Hine.
00:53:42And there is an injury here.
00:53:46To one of the American players and it's number one Chris Lippert.
00:53:53And it looks to be quite a serious injury too.
00:53:55Graham Purvis was showing some real concern there.
00:53:58He was lying very close to him.
00:53:59And what ball they get now they're actually having a go.
00:54:05They're actually using the ball trying to keep it in hand which is good to see.
00:54:09They have actually caught New Zealand on the hopper a couple of times and
00:54:13if they can win a bit more ball off Swords at the front of the lineup
00:54:16and get it to the half and get it wide I think they could put some more pressure on the All Blacks.
00:54:20It's good to see a minor nation doing so well against the All Blacks in that phase.
00:54:24Number 16 Lance Manga is on the field replacing Chris Lippert.
00:54:36So there's Lance Manga right into the front.
00:54:40And back we go just on the All Black side of halfway thrown down the back by Fitzpatrick.
00:54:46It wasn't a particularly good throw it was more on the state side
00:54:48and Jones couldn't get across to reach it.
00:54:51They're just getting a bit untidy now the US.
00:54:53They should set those just slightly more.
00:54:56They're getting in a rush to clear the ball back to the halfback and he's almost not expecting it.
00:55:02Well a bit of gamesmanship there by the halfback Mark Pidcock.
00:55:06He knew that it was New Zealand ball.
00:55:07He shot across and tried to put it in the other side.
00:55:09Here is Innes getting through a couple of tackles.
00:55:11Pops it up or doesn't.
00:55:12Holds on to it in fact near the 10 meter line in the estate's territory.
00:55:17And there's a player lying in over the top there.
00:55:20Getting a reasonable workout too for his efforts.
00:55:22The All Blacks will tap this no doubt.
00:55:2524 points to three.
00:55:27And in fact Preston is going to I think put it up and under here rather than kick for goal.
00:55:36So here's one for the All Blacks to chase on to.
00:55:39Michael Jones leading the charge.
00:55:42Nicely taken in again.
00:55:43I think this time it was Tunnicliffe and it's far too tight in there.
00:55:48But it was nicely controlled in there.
00:55:51But the All Blacks pushing forward.
00:55:55It was in fact the number eight forward Tony Ridnell.
00:55:58So now the All Blacks have a golden opportunity here.
00:56:00Right in centre field.
00:56:08Innes is way up to the right.
00:56:10Preston is standing to the left of the scrum.
00:56:13You can see them but you cannot see Innes.
00:56:15He's moved to the right.
00:56:17And here is Innes.
00:56:18Innes pops it up nicely for Bashop and a simple try for John Timu.
00:56:25Those moves are rehearsed and rehearsed at training.
00:56:28And it's worked well and given John Timu his first test try.
00:56:32And the All Blacks out to 28 points to three.
00:56:43What a beautiful move that was Earl Curtin.
00:56:46You could see it coming though with Innes out wide.
00:56:48Absolutely lovely.
00:56:49Here it is a far out and then Bashop does a double round again.
00:56:52Beautiful pop up by Innes too as he takes the man out with his hips and his shoulder.
00:56:56And then makes it very easy for John Timu.
00:56:59There's not much you can do about it when it's so close to the line.
00:57:02And you do it very very well like that.
00:57:05Lovely double round.
00:57:07He's quick though too Bashop.
00:57:08He doesn't get a lot of credit for being quick.
00:57:10But remember seeing him playing sevens.
00:57:13He's got a lot of pace.
00:57:18And the other thing.
00:57:22No goal again from John Preston.
00:57:24Pushed it wide to the left this time.
00:57:25But the other thing is it's so simple going to the right for halfback too.
00:57:28Because it's the easiest way to run and to pass.
00:57:32Here it is again.
00:57:33Only one man guarding that side again.
00:57:38Yeah lovely little move.
00:57:39And John Timu unchallenged across to score the try.
00:57:42His first.
00:57:44Playing on the right wing today John Timu.
00:57:46That of course is his normal position for Otago.
00:57:48But he's only played two tests on the right wing.
00:57:50The other three have been on the left.
00:57:53And he's got underway.
00:57:55So two of the players making their debuts have scored tries.
00:58:01Preston will have to come out into the field of play and kick for touch here.
00:58:06And again he times it beautifully.
00:58:08And puts it across the touchline 15 meters out from the 22.
00:58:13Well news through this morning.
00:58:14And good news indeed.
00:58:15That David Kirk who captained the All Blacks in the 1987 World Cup of course.
00:58:20Became a father.
00:58:23Yesterday his wife delivered a son called Hugo.
00:58:27Hugo Kirk.
00:58:32So some pushing again on the lineouts.
00:58:34And really the lineouts in this game Earl have been a bit of a shambles haven't they?
00:58:39Yes they have.
00:58:40But I mean it's the USA have been trying to make them that way.
00:58:44They're trying to break them up and try and break up the rhythm.
00:58:47And that's what you have to do if you're playing against a
00:58:50recognized and a well-established side like the All Blacks.
00:58:55So it was inevitable that it was going to be scrappy.
00:58:57And that's exactly what the Americans intended it to be.
00:59:02Well it's going to be a shot at goal here.
00:59:04Once again it will be Mark Williams who's landed one already.
00:59:08Here is the lineout.
00:59:09Another look at the lineout.
00:59:10And you can see the teams from both sides are very very close together.
00:59:13Pushing and shoving going on.
00:59:18Really it's a bit of a lottery as to who you're going to penalize.
00:59:26Nevertheless Williams will attempt yet another shot at goal.
00:59:31Williams is an Englishman.
00:59:32They were born in England.
00:59:33Played a lot in Middlesex for the Wasps in the London area.
00:59:40And moved laterally to the U.S.
00:59:43Mainly because he was such a talented young player.
00:59:47Getting slightly long the tooth now for a back.
00:59:49But obviously the U.S. of A. drawing on his experience.
01:00:01Kick of about 35 meters.
01:00:04And a good one too.
01:00:06From Mark Williams.
01:00:08And the United States have their second penalty goal.
01:00:13And the All Blacks lead by 28 points to six.
01:00:18And we've had about 12 or 13 minutes play on the second half.
01:00:23What I'd like to see the New Zealanders do.
01:00:25Particularly in the backs is that straight ball.
01:00:27The direct ball from the base of the scrum.
01:00:29Particularly to the right with Terry Wright coming in.
01:00:32And with John Temu on the outside of him.
01:00:35Charging for the line without having a whole lot of forwards intervening.
01:00:38Or left-o's as they say.
01:00:39Or right-o's with a half-back or number eight picker.
01:00:42Just direct balls and punching on the blind.
01:00:45Be lovely to see for a change.
01:00:50Five tries to nil the All Blacks.
01:00:52Wright's got a couple.
01:00:54Earl, Purvis and Temu.
01:00:58Preston from halfway.
01:01:01Gary Whetton got up high.
01:01:02Ian Jones tried to tap it back.
01:01:04Red ball, red ball, red ball.
01:01:06And they'll take the line out.
01:01:08No, he's came for the knock-on.
01:01:10Yes, it was knocked on in fact.
01:01:29Norm Mottram on the side of the scrum against Steve McDowell.
01:01:32Norm Mottram as a Scot.
01:01:33So, we've got an Englishman out in the backs, Mark Williams.
01:01:37Norm Mottram, a Scot.
01:01:38A couple of Kiwis in the squad but not playing today.
01:01:40Tony Flay and Barry Daly.
01:01:45And the All Blacks didn't go down.
01:01:46So, it's a free kick.
01:01:53O'Brien wants the ball here.
01:01:55The forwards, I thought, were getting into some sort of formation.
01:02:02They weren't.
01:02:03The way they went down in the scrum was terrible for a start.
01:02:06The number eight, Riddle, never even went into the scrum until they were in push.
01:02:09The lock then lost his footing.
01:02:12And the US scrum is actually packing up a bit.
01:02:15They're losing that discipline of all going down as eight
01:02:18and hitting it rather than folding into the scrum.
01:02:22Well, to the great delight of the crowd here
01:02:24but not to the man concerned, that's the cameraman.
01:02:27There he is on the head.
01:02:29Look, he didn't whack into the lens.
01:02:32So, it's not good.
01:02:34It's not good.
01:02:36It's not good.
01:02:38It's not good.
01:02:40It's not good.
01:02:42Michael Jones at the back.
01:02:43Then Alan Witten in front of him.
01:02:45Andy Earl in front of him again.
01:02:48Sean Fitzpatrick, lovely leap by Earl.
01:02:51Good take.
01:02:51Ten metre line, All Black territory.
01:02:53The All Blacks set up a drive here.
01:02:56Bashop across to Preston.
01:02:58Preston pushes it for once again.
01:03:00Tuigumara coming through quickly.
01:03:02But once again, Kevin Swords,
01:03:03who's been quite outstanding in this game,
01:03:05got back the big lock forward to take it
01:03:07on his own ten metre line.
01:03:09Jones gets in to disrupt halfback Pidcock.
01:03:12Now it goes to Burke.
01:03:15Burke running back into the heavy traffic
01:03:16and the referee was playing advantage.
01:03:19Penalty against the All Blacks.
01:03:22Quickly taken by Pidcock.
01:03:24Taken up by the number eight forward, Ridnell.
01:03:27Tackle made on him by Purvis.
01:03:30Back now for O'Brien.
01:03:31Good structured game being played here by the States.
01:03:34But the kick by O'Brien, in fact,
01:03:37has gone over the goal line
01:03:38rather than over the touchline.
01:03:40And it's Harry Wright to force.
01:03:41Made it too long and therefore
01:03:43taking the pressure off the Blacks.
01:03:49Getting close to halfway through the second half.
01:03:51The All Blacks have only scored two tries
01:03:53in the second spell.
01:03:54Both unconverted to lead by 28 points to six.
01:03:58Preston this time pushes it right down to Gary Hine.
01:04:01This is the fellow that played for Oxford University
01:04:03a couple of times and is vastly experienced.
01:04:06Andy Earl can't control the ball.
01:04:08He's picked up by the outstanding Kevin Swords,
01:04:10the captain of the side.
01:04:14High up and under kick by Pidcock.
01:04:19All Blacks looking to control this one
01:04:20just out from the 22.
01:04:22Bashop feeding Preston.
01:04:24And again a beautiful spiralling kick by John Preston.
01:04:29There goes the big lateral throw-in by Gary Hine.
01:04:33Carry on says the referee.
01:04:34Eric Whittaker takes it in
01:04:35and a head-high tackle by the All Blacks this time.
01:04:40So they're just a bit flustered, I think, at the moment.
01:04:44And frustrated, no doubt.
01:04:47They must know that they're not playing
01:04:48for the All Blacks this time.
01:04:50They must know that they're not playing all that well.
01:04:56Head-high tackle against Michael Jones from behind.
01:05:00It's a bit difficult to make a head-high from behind.
01:05:04I suppose one could grapple Nick from behind.
01:05:09O'Brien pumps the big up and under.
01:05:12Andy Earl wants it this time.
01:05:14Again he's missed it.
01:05:15That's two in a row, Andy Earl.
01:05:17Hasn't been able to take the high ball.
01:05:20A couple of metres out from the 22
01:05:22but the All Blacks should manage to get this one back
01:05:25from the moor.
01:05:33They're vigorous, these blokes.
01:05:35Tony Ridnell.
01:05:36He's a big fella, as you can see.
01:05:38Kevin Swords and Chuck Tunnicliffe,
01:05:39the big fellas, are giving the All Blacks plenty.
01:05:48Earl takes it off the back.
01:05:49Wright came looming up.
01:05:50Terry Wright gets himself into the gap.
01:05:51Now Tui Gamala gets a chance to stretch the legs
01:05:54but the whistle is gone.
01:05:56It was a forward pass.
01:05:58Referee was right on the spot.
01:06:05Terry Wright has looked very impressive
01:06:07coming in from the back.
01:06:08Hedcock with the feed.
01:06:09Tight head for Fitzpatrick.
01:06:11Basham whips it away for Preston.
01:06:13Innes way, way across to Timu.
01:06:16Timu stretching the legs.
01:06:17Wright came infield.
01:06:20Now Preston has a run down the right wing side.
01:06:24Tries to bang it back into the centre.
01:06:29Wright to the right.
01:06:30Preston to the left.
01:06:31Timu to the left.
01:06:32Wright to the right.
01:06:33Timu to the left.
01:06:34Wright to the left.
01:06:36well a bit of a communication breakdown there are they good yes that's sort of
01:06:45doing things naturally I mean I still maintain that the inside man should come
01:06:48back and set the outside fella free particularly when it's right with these
01:06:52tremendous pace but they're trying different perms and one can't blame them
01:06:59All Blacks got a tight head and this one in fact was after team who took it to
01:07:04ground Preston trying to push it back infield but it slipped off the side of
01:07:08his boot well an injury break here chance to bring in Buck Shelford down
01:07:12sideline and a buck what he made over the last 10 minutes well from down here
01:07:18I think the last 10 minutes have been quite boring actually irrespective of
01:07:21one of the one tribe being scored I think both teams are making a lot of
01:07:26mistakes America you know they've had three or four opportunities to spin the
01:07:29ball wide and they've gone to putting the kick in and really they've gained no
01:07:33territory whatsoever the All Blacks every time they get a
01:07:35movement going there's either a drop pass or forward pass and they look like
01:07:40they're struggling at times but they're not playing that impressively in the
01:07:43last 10 minutes thanks back so back we go the injured player is okay and so
01:07:53they'd learn out five meters on the state side of halfway again the big
01:07:56American forwards got up and tipped it on their side the halfbacks having a lot
01:08:02of trouble the USA halfbacks having a tremendous amount of trouble too he's
01:08:06getting far too close Piddock to his forwards and he's snatching at the ball
01:08:11a bit and he's desperation to get it away he must relax more is that winning
01:08:15a fair bit of all now it's Patrick throws lovely take this time by Ian
01:08:20Jones that was a beautifully clean take by Jones so the All Black backs have a
01:08:23run now McCarville whips it across the to a gamata and once again he displays
01:08:27that immense power but he does have gets it up to 10 meters on the state side of
01:08:32halfway basher goes on the blind side and drills it away downfield that's
01:08:37pushed it just a little bit too far and we'll go back to the 22 Graham Basham had
01:08:45a couple of players to his right there there's one fact the teeth it's happening
01:08:49we've got the All Black inside backs are not running hard enough onto the ball
01:08:53not really running they're just sort of stretching it wide without taking the
01:08:57man out everything's drifting off I've got a really hit it Williams with the
01:09:04restart straight for Alan Whetton
01:09:07All Blacks driving in on Alan Whetton 10 meters out from the 22 28 points to 6
01:09:18now they leave it behind for basher boot came over and stopped it turned offside
01:09:23well in fact it was the original offense against number six Mark Sawicki
01:09:31and it goes against Ian Jones who apparently intervened after the penalty
01:09:38had been made yes there was a good call by the referee no need for some
01:09:43indication there of the frustration I think which is creeping into the All
01:09:46Black performance so here's Chris O'Brien
01:09:56why would both of the first five eights have been able to kick this ball
01:10:00beautifully today that was a lovely kick again by O'Brien yes Cambera Vera may be
01:10:04bitching but these two guys are having no trouble at all with it
01:10:10All Blacks second match in the Rugby World Cup 1991 coming to you live from
01:10:15Kings home ground in Gloucester through television New Zealand's one world of
01:10:19sport I think I'm very very said something about the there was no lace on
01:10:23the ball and it was asked me to kick asked Nick to kick 21 in us he can kick
01:10:30a ball to with his left boot beautifully fielded by fullback Paul Sheehy he's
01:10:37pushed it back into the center that that might not have been a wise move but
01:10:41so mistake after mistake from the All Blacks they seem to be having trouble
01:10:46keeping their eye on concentrating on the high ball we've seen Andy all drop a
01:10:50couple and now Graham Bashop spilled one
01:11:11free kick against the All Blacks this time pushing before the ball went in
01:11:23so this can't be a direct kick at goal by O'Brien in fact it looks as though he's
01:11:28going to push it up for his teammates to run on to that's not as far as he would
01:11:35have liked coming down about five meters out from the 22 calling for Bashop
01:11:39assisted in there by Alan Whetton now Bashop has a better ball and Preston
01:11:46just gets the kick away as Sean Lippman arrives on the scene
01:11:56John Preston eight points in the game so far 28 points to three United States
01:12:00thrown quickly again and they win it but Gary Whetton goes through to spoil it
01:12:03as Patrick tries to tow it away coming on the United States side of the rack
01:12:10Pidcock the way to O'Brien tries to get away from Jones who picked him up
01:12:14quickly but offside against the All Blacks he wasn't outside the ball was out
01:12:19of that scrum for quite some time he was entitled to run there hasn't been quite
01:12:24such a dominant figure today Michael Jones the game perhaps hasn't run for
01:12:28him well that's it it hasn't run for him a lot of the mistakes have been back
01:12:33behind him but he's still so fast generally that he gets there and there's
01:12:37a pregnant pause really before the rest of either side the marauding pack
01:12:42actually appear on the scene he's a marvelous player he's been getting rave
01:12:47reviews here too particularly after his game for New Zealand against England
01:12:51they said that he was the difference really between the two teams I think
01:12:54it's stretching it a bit but he certainly is a magic plan shot a goal
01:13:01this time from O'Brien I've seen two penalty goals kick so far by Mark
01:13:06Williams
01:13:12what a bad-looking kick just a way to the right certainly at the distance and
01:13:20so it remains at 28 points to six
01:13:26not too long to go in this game 10 or 12 minutes perhaps the All Blacks would
01:13:32have expected having led by 20 to 3 at halftime to a pull right away on the
01:13:36second half but it hasn't been that way at all not so far anyway
01:13:42Bishop for Terry Wright's rights kick not finding touch down it goes to Gary
01:13:49Hine on the right wing side he opens it up for Paul Sheehy and running
01:13:53themselves a little bit of strife here Burke taken to ground and another
01:13:57head-high tackle well goodness me it was hardly head-high just grabbed his jersey
01:14:00that's right that's stretching it a wee bit but he came back the wrong way and
01:14:04he deserved to get nailed as did Burke
01:14:12says USA we root them I call my right back so the kick made again by O'Brien
01:14:21the All Blacks not having too many attacking opportunities in the last five
01:14:24or six minutes play has been inside all-black territory I think
01:14:28psychologically they too they'd think they would just cruise it given the
01:14:32nature of the team that they have selected and it's just getting
01:14:36frustration because it hasn't actually happened in the US have played well
01:14:39beautiful leap by Andy Earl the All Blacks decide to drive on Earl this is
01:14:45much more commitment from the All Blacks held up it looks as though McDowell's got
01:14:50it in there they've decided to take it into their own hands here and just bump
01:14:54it up the middle for a while ten meter line in the state's territory now it's
01:15:00finally emerged Preston McCarhill turning it back for his loose forwards
01:15:06Ellen Witt was the first man there now they go blindside across to Tuigamara
01:15:13pushes it away downfield Sheehy going back to Tuigamara is coming to him
01:15:18quickly and Preston and it's a five meter scrum good work by Inge the
01:15:25winger he put the kick in and then chased hard and so the All Blacks find
01:15:31themselves now in a good attacking position leading by 28 points to six
01:15:46here's Inge charging straight in again twisting turning now he meets up with
01:15:52the forwards Bashop waiting for it
01:15:58Preston Ennis long went across misses Terry Wright Timu has to go back John
01:16:06Timu so good from broken play
01:16:13two or three meters up from the line All Blacks getting there to try and secure
01:16:17the second phase ball they have Bashop across to Tuigamara what a good pass from Graham Bashop
01:16:22and Inge completes his first test try so all three test debutants have scored
01:16:31tries today and that is well deserved by Inge Tuigamara 32 points to six
01:16:40well it was a very tight build-up because the the US backs came up very
01:16:46very flat they also had an extra man out there and it forced Timu to come back
01:16:50when the wide pass went behind him he picked it up and then he moved back look
01:16:54at him eluding all these players coming back right through the middle he went
01:16:57right over here to the left left wing back into the middle a good ruck picked
01:17:01up here Bashop goes the right side for a change it gives a beautiful long pass
01:17:05and there was no one out there at all wasn't a show on the wide stopping the
01:17:10big black bus and scoring on the left flank it was all set up by John Timu
01:17:16lovely run by him
01:17:27Preston's nailed this one that's a good kick
01:17:32John Preston converts the try scored by Inge Tuigamara and it's 34 points to
01:17:38six now for the All Blacks one stage it was almost like American Ball where
01:17:44McDowell turned around and waved him says come back here he yelled at him and
01:17:48he stood aside so opening up the path for him to dive straight through them
01:17:51because most of his forwards that is the All Black forwards were in front of Timu
01:17:55and he shot straight to the angle
01:18:00restart by Mark Williams down for Preston All Blacks want to run it out
01:18:13from their own line away it goes for Craig Guinness who gets onto that
01:18:17favoured left boot of his and that's a lovely kick by Craig Guinness and we go
01:18:28to the line out which will be shortened by the United States
01:18:36throw by Johnson Jones trying to get a hold of it he knocked it on referee
01:18:41playing advantage here and it's going to be a scrum
01:18:51news just come through that Chris Lippert in fact has torn his knee
01:18:56ligaments and that was the reason that he was forced from the field big scrum
01:19:02by the All Blacks Basher up to Preston Preston down the blindside he goes nice
01:19:06pass inside Alan Whetton this is better stuff from the All Blacks inside the 22
01:19:10now they said it driving in hard Basher Preston
01:19:19well tackled into centerfield again McDowell gets across quickly freeze the
01:19:24arms well now Basher flicks it across for Timo Terry Wright all knocked
01:19:29forward by one of the American players I said I think the referee says play on
01:19:32All Blacks have it again in the form of Ian Jones hard defense to get through
01:19:38here to Yamada with his strength now in us up for Preston they're going left and
01:19:43right here Andy Earl decides to take it in not making too much progress at the
01:19:48moment could this time though right little pass for McCarville and it just
01:19:54dropped at the feet of John Timo McCarville took it off him Jones runs
01:20:00onto it he pops it in for Ian Jones and Ian Jones stretching very close to the
01:20:07line but didn't quite make it the United States defending desperately here and
01:20:12doing a very good job of it
01:20:17well that was great play by Michael Jones
01:20:29so the scrum right near the line and there is an injury here as we see Ian
01:20:37Jones oh he does a meter short after a lovely pass from Michael Jones
01:20:49so the injured player so we can pick him up could be Norm Mottram I think the
01:20:56prop board
01:20:59hello Curtin time running out in fact I think we're just about just about run
01:21:08the full 80 minutes here and what will be going through the minds of these
01:21:11blokes I think they'll just be you know dissatisfied with their attitude to the
01:21:16game really it's not they played particularly well and they'll know it it was just
01:21:21concentration they thought obviously they'd run away in the last 20 minutes
01:21:29so the scrum to be set once again this time it'll be the All Blacks ball and
01:21:33push the States back
01:21:38Bashop to feed held in the back by all now Bashop frees it up Preston having a
01:21:45little dab looking to free it up for Craig Innes and then the struggles over
01:21:48Craig Innes gets the try right near the end a well-worked move John Preston did
01:21:54well to hold it up and Craig Innes with good display of strength has wrestled
01:22:00his way through to score the try to make it 38 points to 6 and that's the first
01:22:05for Craig Innes at Rugby World Cup 1991 well it was a nicely worked move Preston
01:22:12ran it up held it up and just slipped it to Innes and Innes with his power was
01:22:17able to surge across and get the try it's a very good punching run you'll see
01:22:23it here coming well held up to two-handed as you notice by Preston
01:22:27holding it up the strength of Innes carrying him through so Craig Innes in
01:22:34his 13th test has now scored five tries and John Preston
01:22:46converts the try scored by Craig Innes 40 points to 6 so the All Blacks have
01:22:52made it to 40 All Blacks were expected I think by many people to get to 50 or
01:22:59even 60 in this game hasn't been that at all the States have played I think above
01:23:04themselves admittedly the All Blacks at times haven't quite measured up there's
01:23:09been a lot of mistakes but they've now doubled their halftime score 20 to 3 at
01:23:14halftime it's now 40 to 6 and it must just about be full-time
01:23:27Mark Williams again with the kick out Preston they got to open it again no
01:23:32Innes is going to be able to get on that left boot no in fact Innes is going to
01:23:35carry on running pass across to McCarhill almost intercepted by Gary
01:23:39Hyne must have knocked it forward and he did deliberate knock on in fact so it
01:23:47was a penalty well I think he was going for the intercept so I was stretching it
01:23:50a bit to call it a deliberate knock on yes it wasn't a deliberate knock on he
01:23:53was actually got too close before he unloaded the pass it was the timing of
01:23:56the pass that was wrong not the fact that was deliberately knocked down
01:24:00Alan Whetton ranging out on the left wing side Inge Tuigemaele has gone to help
01:24:06the backs out they got to get a run now Tuigemaele in fact was lurking
01:24:09way out on the right wing side but Michael Jones has the ball here Jones
01:24:13looking for his captain Gary Whetton big surge down the touchline by Gary Whetton
01:24:17finds his brother Alan Whetton 10 meters on the stateside of halfway very close
01:24:21to the touchline here nice quality ball delivered for Bashop Innes good support
01:24:27from McCarhill he has Preston there All Blacks finishing well now Timu gets
01:24:32into the gap John Timu Terry Wright takes it beautifully and that's the best try of the day
01:24:37try number three for Terry Wright
01:24:44magic hands from Terry Wright that wasn't an easy pass to take but he flung
01:24:49onto it and scored a quite brilliant try
01:24:53yes well that was a lovely play here the build-up was good too the hands are very
01:24:59quick in the midfield both McCarhill stepped back inside to allow players to
01:25:04run off his shoulder then the end Timu accelerated to clear himself get into
01:25:09that in-between space and then right here you'll see him really poking it in
01:25:12now here he goes Timu shoves it back to Terry Wright and his pace just carries
01:25:17him away but it was a good try and the build-up was good too they held all the
01:25:24American forwards or the US forwards back on one side of the pitch and then
01:25:28spread it quickly to the right
01:25:34Preston converts the try scored by Terry Wright referee looks at his watch says
01:25:39we'll carry on 46 points to six and in fact the whistle is blown so that is it
01:25:47it is all over
01:25:50the All Blacks have won their second pool match here at the Rugby World Cup
01:25:55in 1991 by 46 points to six they led at halftime by 20 points to three and I
01:26:02think we might just go quickly down to the sideline and get Buck Shelford's
01:26:06quick impressions on the game
01:26:10well that games over and the All Blacks come through with a comprehensive 46
01:26:15points to six victory over the Americans it's just summing up the game
