00:00:30The flag's waving, the band playing, the Scottish team dressed in white for this occasion run
00:00:53out and take their place.
00:00:55There's David Sowell, the captain for this quarterfinal.
00:00:59The knockout stage is now.
00:01:00The winners know that they go through to a semi-final here at Murrayfield against the
00:01:05winners of that game in Paris between France and England.
00:01:13A chilly wind blowing down the pitch here at Murrayfield and the anthems.
00:01:43There's David Sowell, the captain for this quarterfinal here at Murrayfield and the anthems.
00:02:10Applause for the Western Samoans, now it's time for Flower of Scotland.
00:02:35They beat Ireland last Saturday, Sean Leneen failing a late fitness test on his knee,
00:02:40so 21-year-old Graeme Sheal comes into the centre for only his second cap.
00:02:44Craig Chalmers, who took a bang on the leg in the last match, was past fit yesterday.
00:02:48The side capped in for the 17th time by prop forward David Sowell.
00:02:55And now the Western Samoan side, their dammer.
00:03:24Applause for Scotland facing up to that challenge from the Western Samoan side,
00:03:30who have been forced to make one change from the last match.
00:03:33Lachmat Keenan is suspended after being sent off against Argentina.
00:03:36Eddie Ioane takes his place in the second row to make his World Cup debut.
00:03:4112 of that team are playing for their fourth match out of four, including the captain.
00:03:46Like David Sowell, a prop forward, that's Peter Fatialofa.
00:03:51Officiating today in his 13th international is the Welsh referee, Mr Derek Bevan.
00:04:05A packed Murrayfield, expectant, anticipating a cracking match between the surprise package
00:04:12of the tournament Western Samoa and the home team and favourites Scotland.
00:04:18Anatalia Ailupo, the fullback for Western Samoa, places the ball on the centre spot
00:04:24and prepares to kick off. And this surely the most intimidating atmosphere the Samoans have yet faced.
00:04:35Derek Bevan gets the game underway, Ailupo kicks long.
00:04:40A slight breeze in the favour of the Western Samoans, the ball going over the dead ball line
00:04:45and Gavin Hastings just getting a first feel of the ball and chipping it forward
00:04:52to his brother Scott under the posts. Important to get hands on the ball first thing
00:04:57and Craig Chalmers, the outside half, who had a fitness test earlier this week, restarts for Scotland.
00:05:05Bird whistles underneath it but Gray wins it for Scotland.
00:05:08Armstrong, this is Gavin Hastings, John Jeffrey and feeding the blind Gavin Hastings again.
00:05:24Derek White's in there and the body's piling in and an electric start gone round.
00:05:32It sure is Alistair, Scotland certainly nailing their colours to the mast in the manner in which
00:05:37they're going to take on this Western Samoan pack. There's a lot of energy that has to be sapped out
00:05:43of the Western Samoans early on in this game from a Scottish viewpoint.
00:05:47Intriguing though how Scotland use Gavin.
00:05:52The first scrummage of the match, Mr Bevan unhappy about that.
00:05:56Gerald Davies, these boys can tackle though, can't they?
00:05:58Well they certainly can but what is interesting there from the Scottish point of view
00:06:02is that they kept the ball in their hands. They are running into this wind, this very stiff breeze
00:06:06at the moment and they're keeping the ball in the hand just as they're doing at the moment.
00:06:09Pick up, Derek White. Scotland burrowing in there. Armstrong dicks the ball out.
00:06:15Chalmers, hoist high and Lupo's underneath it. Nobody wants it.
00:06:20It held up in the wind and that's David Soul, can't hold it. Knock on.
00:06:26But that kick then show how tricky the wind can be. It was a good kick from Chalmers
00:06:30but it just hung in the air and fell short in the end.
00:06:34Yes, David Soul will be very disappointed he didn't gather that one in.
00:06:38Fabulous opportunity gone wasted.
00:06:42Via the Western Samoan scrum half. The scrum crabs round.
00:06:49And Mr Bevan unhappy with that. That's the second scrum we've had and both of them
00:06:53have been forced to the floor. The terrific battle up the front there.
00:06:59On the far side of that scrum it's Paul Bunnell against Fatih Alofa, the Western Samoan captain.
00:07:05And again it collapses.
00:07:12There's an awful lot of weight in that front row.
00:07:16Western Samoan hooker, Tomolatai is 17 stone 4.
00:07:20Scotland still 1 against the head.
00:07:24And drive forward.
00:07:29Chalmers and Armstrong, a little misunderstanding but Jefferies recovers.
00:07:34John Jeffery. Armstrong. Chalmers on the blind side. Chalmers dummies.
00:07:41Chalmers finds support from Gray.
00:07:47Armstrong again and doubles back to the narrow side.
00:07:51Jeffery. The tackle is coming in.
00:07:55How wonderful at the moment to see Scotland playing, managing to get the first base possession
00:07:59and then securing it and maintaining it after that.
00:08:02Good play, good play, close to the forwards from them.
00:08:11Via the putting.
00:08:14Scrum collapse this side again.
00:08:19And it's David Soul for Scotland number 1 there.
00:08:24He's up against Alalatoa.
00:08:27Via.
00:08:29Samoa win this one.
00:08:33Scotland penalised.
00:08:36Offside.
00:08:39And Western Samoa get the chance to clear their lines. 4 minutes gone.
00:08:45Scotland 0, Western Samoa 0.
00:08:47And this is Steve Batchup
00:08:50With a huge spiralling kick down the touchline.
00:08:53Hasn't found touch and this is Gavin Hastings.
00:08:56Hoist high, the ball holds up in the wind.
00:08:58Underneath it is Tangaloa.
00:09:00Tangaloa.
00:09:05Scots dive over.
00:09:07And the penalty for Western Samoa.
00:09:09The body is diving over.
00:09:11The referees signal very explicit.
00:09:13Penalised Chris Gray and penalising him 10 metres more for talking back.
00:09:20So we saw Gavin Hastings' kick actually blow back on him there.
00:09:24He didn't get enough depth in it at all.
00:09:26And of course when it came down Scotland were all at sea.
00:09:29But I certainly give the Western Samoan, Tangaloa,
00:09:3210 out of 10 for the way he fielded the ball and held on to the possession
00:09:36and looked for the supporters coming in.
00:09:38And Scotland certainly were penalised quite rightly for going over the top.
00:09:42But goodness me, what an idiotic thing to do to speak back to a referee
00:09:46when Scotland had shown so much character there,
00:09:51how they started to get into the game.
00:09:53And the discipline was fabulous.
00:09:55And then one daft move, the discipline has gone.
00:09:58And we're now steering a three-point deficit.
00:10:03This is Matt Veyer, the scrum half.
00:10:05Kicked 22 points so far in this competition.
00:10:09Five conversions and four penalties.
00:10:11He was practising here yesterday and wasn't striking the ball particularly well.
00:10:16I should think he'd be glad to have one right in front of the post
00:10:18for his first effort today.
00:10:24Veyer kicks high between the posts.
00:10:28Three points to Western Samoa.
00:10:30Six minutes gone.
00:10:32It's Scotland nil, Western Samoa three.
00:10:34The penalty from Matthew Veyer.
00:10:40Well that was a three-point bonus that the Western Samoans
00:10:43certainly hadn't been banking on following the first five minutes of play.
00:10:50But due to ill discipline in the main coming from Gray,
00:10:53something you wouldn't have expected at this stage in the game so early.
00:10:56There's Chris Gray.
00:10:58He'll be regretting that.
00:10:59A dentist from Nottingham.
00:11:04Playing his 21st cap today, so he's got plenty of experience,
00:11:07but just carried away.
00:11:10And gifting three points to Western Samoa.
00:11:13Hastings restarts and again the ball holds up in the wind.
00:11:17Jeffrey gets a hand to it and Sol piles on.
00:11:20Chalmers, the high kick again, hangs in the wind.
00:11:25Hastings is bundled over as he tries to chase it.
00:11:34And Samoa going forward, winning the scrum.
00:11:38Very well taken by Ayo Lupo at full back.
00:11:41It was a beautiful take because it's such a tricky wind at the moment.
00:11:44The ball not going quite where it's intended by Chalmers
00:11:46because he just hangs there in the air and sometimes drifts back.
00:11:50And Atalaya Ayo Lupo, the full back.
00:11:52A good take from him.
00:11:54And a good scrum from Western Samoa.
00:11:56Veyer to Bashup.
00:12:00Again he hasn't found chance.
00:12:02And this is Gavin Hastings.
00:12:04Again hoist high.
00:12:06Bertras is underneath it.
00:12:08Hastings punches back but there's nobody there.
00:12:11This is White trying to recover.
00:12:13Derek White's shield now.
00:12:17Oh, what a tackle on John Jeffrey.
00:12:24And there's a bit of punching going off the ball.
00:12:27Bunce and Gary Armstrong fighting.
00:12:30And the touch judge on this near side, Sandy McNeil,
00:12:32has pointed something out to Derek Bevan.
00:12:36Yes, Bunce grabbed a hold of Gary Armstrong there
00:12:38and wouldn't allow him to get back into the ruck.
00:12:40We'll maybe see here as it sets up.
00:12:42John Jeffrey certainly wouldn't think.
00:12:44And the penalty awarded against Gary Armstrong
00:12:47to the disappointment of the crowd.
00:12:52It all happened off camera.
00:12:54But certainly after the hospital pass from Tukolo was given to John Jeffrey,
00:12:59John Jeffrey took Bunce's tackle.
00:13:01What a tackle it was.
00:13:03He still set up the situation.
00:13:05And as Gary Armstrong then tried to get into the back of the ruck
00:13:08to take the ball from the back of the ruck, Bunce held on to him.
00:13:11Just grabbed it. Here it comes.
00:13:13Look at it on the left of the picture there.
00:13:15Armstrong, he was penalised for throwing the punch.
00:13:21But Bunce held on to him for, I would say,
00:13:23something like four or five seconds by the leg.
00:13:30So Gary Armstrong, penalised.
00:13:33And this gives his opposite number, Vaja, the chance.
00:13:38After nine minutes of this first half,
00:13:41Western Samoa already three points ahead
00:13:44and Vaja with a chance to make it six.
00:14:04And again the ball blows over in the wind.
00:14:13Doddie Weir, played in all three games so far in the World Cup,
00:14:17scored a try against Zimbabwe.
00:14:20Vaja strikes it well. Will the wind carry it? Not quite.
00:14:25Taken by Armstrong.
00:14:28Ten minutes gone. Western Samoa still leading by three points tonight.
00:14:32Very interestingly too, we're ten minutes into the game
00:14:34and we haven't had a line-out.
00:14:38Vaja's got a chance.
00:14:40Vaja's got a chance.
00:14:42Vaja's got a chance.
00:14:44Vaja's got a chance.
00:14:46Vaja's got a chance.
00:14:49Vaja's got a chance.
00:14:51Won by Scotland. This is Geoffrey.
00:14:54Armstrong.
00:14:56Hastings again.
00:15:00Western Samoa penalised this time.
00:15:05And will we get that first line-out?
00:15:07It's been noticeable so far, the Western Samoans have kicked twice
00:15:10but not made touch, probably deliberately.
00:15:12But this time I should think
00:15:14Hastings will pump the ball into touch
00:15:16and we'll get that first line-out.
00:15:19Yes he does.
00:15:21And Gordon Brown, the line-out obviously where Scotland hope to
00:15:24establish superiority.
00:15:26Well Scotland must establish a colossal superiority in the line-outs.
00:15:30Certainly the wind blowing down the pitch won't help.
00:15:35At the front is John Geoffrey.
00:15:39John Bingham's won against Ailupo, against Alalatoa
00:15:42and won by Scotland, Scrappely.
00:15:44Armstrong.
00:15:46Armstrong goes through one tackle.
00:15:49He's wired, he was scum half.
00:15:52In touch.
00:15:55APPLAUSE
00:16:06So the first put-in to the line-out for Western Samoa.
00:16:10This is Taumalatai.
00:16:12The hooker, 17-4 of him.
00:16:15At the front is Alalatoa.
00:16:18The third whistle I'm going to hand to it, piling through
00:16:22is by Farley.
00:16:25Basham.
00:16:28Underneath it is Hastings, takes it well.
00:16:31And kicks long.
00:16:35And Ailupo is way back in his own 22.
00:16:39And again, doesn't want to make touch.
00:16:42Counter-attack.
00:16:45And Tukulo straight into touch.
00:16:49Well that was certainly very disappointing because
00:16:52Gavin Hastings was up with Ivan Tukulo
00:16:54and was looking for the ball.
00:16:56Scotland certainly intent on running the ball
00:16:59back at the Western Samoans.
00:17:02But in the line-out, we're looking at Geoffrey there
00:17:05who normally is at the back of the line-out.
00:17:07There's a second in the line-out, right down the very front,
00:17:09in front of Gray.
00:17:12It looks as though Samoa are trying to throw it to
00:17:15one by Ioane,
00:17:17dumping number two there, number five,
00:17:19he's in for Keane in this game.
00:17:21This is Buntz.
00:17:23Buntz goes through two tackles.
00:17:26First of the ball by Farley.
00:17:28Hands up on the Scotland side.
00:17:32And again, Armstrong's in there.
00:17:34And so are the buddies.
00:17:36This is Calder. Calder has men outside.
00:17:38Chalmers.
00:17:40Hastings.
00:17:41White.
00:17:42White.
00:17:44Outside in.
00:17:45Estanja can't hold the ball.
00:17:47And a chance going back in for Scotland.
00:17:50What a terrific play coming from Scotland there.
00:17:52It would be messy to begin with,
00:17:54the ball bouncing up and down.
00:17:55It was Calder then who brought it away.
00:17:57And suddenly there were three men on the Scottish right.
00:17:59But I think in the end it was a poor pass from White
00:18:02to Estanja on the right wing.
00:18:06Deserved much better than that.
00:18:07Let's look at it again.
00:18:08This is White, the number eight.
00:18:09He looks inside.
00:18:10He's got support there.
00:18:11But it's a poor pass.
00:18:12Bad timing from him to Estanja.
00:18:17It's fullback Ayo Lupa.
00:18:19He certainly held back there
00:18:20and didn't commit himself far too soon to the tackle.
00:18:23And that certainly left Derek White in two minds.
00:18:27Derek White recovered.
00:18:32And the scrum put in to the West of St. Lawrence.
00:18:35One against the head by Scotland.
00:18:36The second one.
00:18:37Chalmers.
00:18:38Hastings.
00:18:39Hastings.
00:18:41Held up in the tackle by Bunce.
00:18:47Scotland again.
00:18:48Chalmers.
00:18:49Estanja.
00:18:51Estanja.
00:18:53Chalmers.
00:18:54Armstrong.
00:18:57Good defence.
00:18:59And Scotland piling in again.
00:19:03And on the far side of the field,
00:19:05another tough judge's flag is up.
00:19:07This belongs to Kerry Fitzgerald.
00:19:10Another Australian.
00:19:16And the man penalised this time is Bert Twissell.
00:19:19The blue number four.
00:19:20Western Samoa in second row.
00:19:23And a penalty for Scotland right in front of the post.
00:19:26The crowd are happy about that.
00:19:30There's a super bit of play from Scotland.
00:19:32And the great thing there was Scott Hastings
00:19:34when he committed the tackler.
00:19:36And two of the Western Samoan boys thumped into him.
00:19:39But despite the clattering that he took,
00:19:41he stayed on his feet.
00:19:43Magnificent to see.
00:19:44And of course that allowed the Scottish back row
00:19:46to get there in numbers.
00:19:47Here we come.
00:19:50That was the knee going in by number four.
00:19:52The left knee was raised.
00:19:54Well spotted by the tough judge on the far side.
00:20:05Gavin Hastings.
00:20:13No problems for Gavin Hastings.
00:20:15And Scotland are level.
00:20:18Sixteen minutes gone.
00:20:19It's Scotland three, Western Samoa three.
00:20:21And Ian McGeachin, we caught a glimpse of there.
00:20:24A much happier man now.
00:20:26The problem for Western Samoa is a matter of possession
00:20:29in the scrums, particularly already
00:20:31in the game so far we've seen Scotland
00:20:33steal two against the head.
00:20:34And really in the looms too.
00:20:35Just as we saw earlier on, once Scotland
00:20:37get that kind of momentum going,
00:20:39Scotland make sure that they keep the possession.
00:20:44John Allen.
00:20:45Scottish hooker.
00:20:46One of the least experienced of a very experienced pack.
00:20:52And the restart.
00:20:54It's from Ailupo.
00:20:57Straight to his opposite number.
00:20:58Gavin Hastings.
00:21:00And Gavin Hastings, with one penalty already,
00:21:03makes a good touch.
00:21:10Short line called by the Samoans.
00:21:14Vaya and his hooker Tomolatai consult.
00:21:18At the front for them is Ioane.
00:21:19Ioane wins it.
00:21:20Vaya, lovely pass.
00:21:23Indecision between the Samoans.
00:21:25Vachup and his number 8, Lamb,
00:21:26didn't know what each other was doing.
00:21:28Scotland steal the ball.
00:21:30And drive.
00:21:33And Armstrong.
00:21:37Weir.
00:21:39Allen.
00:21:44Armstrong again.
00:21:45The little chip.
00:21:46Chalmers is chasing.
00:21:47So is Gavin Hastings.
00:21:49Ailupo.
00:21:50Into touch.
00:21:51Yes, it's ironic that Scotland's attacking position
00:21:53has come from a superbly one-line out ball
00:21:56by Western Samoa.
00:22:02Scotland's forwards gather.
00:22:05Making sure they all know the signal.
00:22:07As an injured player is dealt with right away
00:22:10on the halfway line.
00:22:11But the referee says play on down there.
00:22:1310 metres away from the Samoan.
00:22:15And it's a goal.
00:22:16And it's a goal.
00:22:17And it's a goal.
00:22:18Referee says play on down there.
00:22:2010 metres away from the Samoan line.
00:22:23Weir can't hold it.
00:22:27Samoans have it.
00:22:28Vaya.
00:22:30Good kick.
00:22:31Good touch from the Scrum half.
00:22:36Matthew Vaya.
00:22:3825-year-old Scrum half.
00:22:41Well built young man.
00:22:4313-stone-10.
00:22:49Injured man recovered.
00:22:50Pat Lam is OK now.
00:22:54And Calder wins this.
00:22:55This is Chalmers.
00:22:56Chalmers.
00:22:58The ball tapped down from his hands.
00:23:00Hastings.
00:23:01Ticolo.
00:23:08Put in for Western Samoa.
00:23:10And those tackles are coming in.
00:23:12But to Scotland's credit, they're running at them.
00:23:14Taking on the tacklers.
00:23:19This is Vaya.
00:23:20At Scrum half.
00:23:22Batchup.
00:23:24Kicks into space.
00:23:25Stanger has to go back.
00:23:28Ball carried on the wind.
00:23:30Deep into the Scottish 22.
00:23:32Stanger, with not much of an angle.
00:23:34Makes touch.
00:23:38Yes, that was an excellent Scrum there by the Western Samoans.
00:23:41Perfect straight.
00:23:42Straight for the ball.
00:23:43And fed right back.
00:23:44Very comfortable in the Scrum.
00:23:49Tumulatai.
00:23:51Throws at the front for Alalatoa.
00:23:54The front peel.
00:23:55Scrum half, Vaya.
00:23:57Knock on.
00:23:59And a let-off for Scotland there
00:24:01as Vaya sprints round the front of that line-out.
00:24:12Armstrong.
00:24:13Comfortable strike.
00:24:14Comfortable put-in.
00:24:15And...
00:24:17Not such a good kick for touch.
00:24:19But safe.
00:24:21Scotland certainly should be well aware
00:24:23of how to deal with the flat ball
00:24:25to the front of the line-out by the Western Samoans.
00:24:28Because that was all Japan had to offer in Scotland.
00:24:31Albeit that the Japanese did it very well indeed.
00:24:34Yes, Samoa have put their prop forward.
00:24:36Six-foot-four-inch Alalatoa at the front of the line.
00:24:40Scotland win it.
00:24:41Barging out by the Samoans.
00:24:43And Scotland get the penalty.
00:24:47The tap penalty from Armstrong.
00:24:49He's got courage.
00:24:51Throws the ball forward in the tackle.
00:24:55That's great to see, Gerald,
00:24:57the way the Scots are actually running at them
00:24:59despite their reputation for tackling.
00:25:01Yes, it is.
00:25:02They're paying into the breeze.
00:25:04They want to keep the ball as often as they can in the hand.
00:25:07But what they're doing so well at the moment
00:25:09is gaining that possession in the line-out.
00:25:11Because they're putting Jeffrey and Gray together in the front.
00:25:14Two tall men forcing a Western Samoan to throw beyond them.
00:25:17And forcing them back in the scrum too.
00:25:19This is Bunce.
00:25:20Bunce is strong.
00:25:21He stands up in the tackle.
00:25:23But Scotland get there first.
00:25:27And win the penalty.
00:25:29Bunce hanging on to the ball a bit too long
00:25:31and Scotland take the tap penalty.
00:25:33Sol, Chalmers, Tupelo.
00:25:35Tupelo tips ahead and chases.
00:25:39Ailupo goes back.
00:25:40Takes it well, Ailupo.
00:25:45Gavin Hastings puts the ball into touch.
00:25:50And the Scottish player injured.
00:25:53Looks like Craig Chalmers.
00:25:56A bit of a bash in the head there.
00:26:03Yes, the referee saw the infringement on Craig Chalmers
00:26:05but he definitely played advantage there.
00:26:07He gave Scotland the chance.
00:26:11Craig Chalmers has been in the wars this World Cup.
00:26:14Forced to leave the field against Zimbabwe.
00:26:20Not against Zimbabwe.
00:26:22Forced to leave the field against Ireland.
00:26:27And spent this week.
00:26:29And let's have a look at the replay.
00:26:31There's Chalmers with the ball now.
00:26:32And there goes the tackle from Vaienga.
00:26:37I've really got to say that when the referee has been so hard
00:26:39on the in-discipline so far,
00:26:42that was a situation for definitely stopping the game.
00:26:45Irrespective of any advantage that was possibly going to be
00:26:48accrued by Scotland.
00:26:51Now Chalmers is back in action.
00:26:57Aimed at the back.
00:26:58One by Vaifali.
00:27:01Now tied it up.
00:27:02Here he is, Vaifali.
00:27:07Via.
00:27:09Bashup.
00:27:10The high ball.
00:27:12Buntz meant to chase that.
00:27:14Hastings takes it.
00:27:15Calls the mark.
00:27:16And is thrown over.
00:27:18By six foot one inch Buntz.
00:27:20Buntz calls the mark.
00:27:22And gets it.
00:27:23Good fullback play from Gavin Hastings.
00:27:26He kept his eye on the ball.
00:27:28So often against the Western Samoans.
00:27:31This is Lamb.
00:27:33Lamb.
00:27:35Lamb at pace.
00:27:36Vaifali.
00:27:38Oh.
00:27:39Great attack by the Western Samoans.
00:27:43Superb run from Pat Lamb, the number eight.
00:27:47A knock on, giving Scotland the scrap.
00:27:56Armstrong.
00:27:57Chalmers.
00:28:03Greg Chalmers.
00:28:06Twenty-three year old.
00:28:07Twenty-three only this week.
00:28:16Solid figure of Tomolatai.
00:28:18That's the view he has down the line-out.
00:28:20One kick for Alalatoa.
00:28:23That's five metres though.
00:28:26And that routine between Tomolatai and Alalatoa.
00:28:29Obviously an integral part of the Samoan line-out tactics.
00:28:37But because the ball didn't travel five metres,
00:28:39Scotland get a scrum put in.
00:28:43Armstrong.
00:28:44To Chalmers.
00:28:47To touch.
00:28:54Short line called by Samoa.
00:28:57Ioane is at the front, number five.
00:28:59Making his World Cup debut.
00:29:02Coming in for the injured Keenan.
00:29:03There he is, 18 stones worth of him.
00:29:05He's up against Derek White.
00:29:09Came over the back for Buntz.
00:29:13Buntz moving too soon.
00:29:15He's got to stay ten metres until the ball crosses the end of the line.
00:29:19And so Buntz penalised.
00:29:25And Scotland will kick for touch through Gavin Hastings.
00:29:30What a competitor Buntz is.
00:29:33What a fellow.
00:29:34Well Gavin at the moment won't be too proud of his touch kicking.
00:29:36His fielding is absolutely immaculate.
00:29:39But the kicking he needs is to keep the head down a wee bit more and follow through.
00:29:4325 minutes gone.
00:29:44Scotland three, Western Samoa three.
00:29:48John Geoffrey at the front of the line for Scotland.
00:29:52To counter-attack that throw to Alalatoa.
00:29:55Won by Western Samoa.
00:29:56Ontario diving through.
00:29:59It's sold.
00:30:01Offside.
00:30:04George Weir penalised Doddie Weir.
00:30:10And Steve Batchett will get this kick.
00:30:14Put it into touch.
00:30:17It seems almost ironic that Doddie Weir, the biggest man on the park, gets penalised for going through a line-out.
00:30:26There he is, George Weir.
00:30:27The baby of the forwards.
00:30:28Only 21.
00:30:30Six foot seven inch tall.
00:30:34One at the back by Scotland.
00:30:35Armstrong.
00:30:37Armstrong.
00:30:39Ducks in.
00:30:40But only into the tackling line.
00:30:50And the Samoans move it across field.
00:30:57And they'll win the put-in as the side going forward.
00:31:05Well the Samoans have certainly got their bit between their teeth.
00:31:08They're right back into this game.
00:31:1225 minutes gone.
00:31:13It's Scotland three, Western Samoa three.
00:31:15This is Lamb at number eight.
00:31:16Lamb.
00:31:18Weir.
00:31:19But what a good pass to Batchett.
00:31:21Batchett now.
00:31:22This is Weir.
00:31:26Weir penalised.
00:31:28Hanging on to the ball.
00:31:34Must let go of the ball in the tackle.
00:31:35And Scotland through Hastings.
00:31:36And Sol.
00:31:37Again, crunching tackle but lays the ball back so well.
00:31:38This is Chalmers.
00:31:39The ball hanging in the air.
00:31:40Back goes Lima.
00:31:41And Ailupo lets it bounce.
00:31:42Ailupo is in trouble from Calder.
00:31:43Recovery from Limes.
00:31:44Kicks charged down by Chalmers.
00:31:45Jeffrey's in there.

00:44:06The try has been scored on that far side.
00:44:11What a try for Scotland.
00:44:16John Geoffrey it looked to be.
00:44:19A pick-up and drive round the edge of the loose ball.
00:44:26Let's look at it again.
00:44:32Yes, John Geoffrey it was.
00:44:34Number six for Scotland.
00:44:36His tenth try in international rugby.
00:44:39And on the stroke of half-time putting Scotland well clear.
00:44:44But it's been the hallmark of this first half performance from Scotland
00:44:48in that they haven't allowed the Western Samoans to settle down.
00:44:51Even the penalties that have been awarded to Scotland,
00:44:54Scotland luckily now have taken to running at the Western Samoans.
00:44:58They've kept Western Samoans on their toes, thus having the advantage all their own.
00:45:02And that's how the try came.
00:45:07Conversion attempt from Gavin Hastings.
00:45:11Into the wind, what a good kick that is.
00:45:13On the stroke of half-time, the conversion from Gavin Hastings
00:45:17and the Scottish fans here at Murrayfield
00:45:19absolutely delighted with the half-time scoreboard
00:45:22which reads Scotland 13, Western Samoa 3.
00:45:32CHEERING
00:46:02CHEERING
00:46:12Western Samoa 3, Scotland 13.
00:46:15The crowd have been registering their appreciation of that scoreline
00:46:18with a Mexican wave during the interval.
00:46:20The band is making its way off the field
00:46:23and Scotland now ready to resume with a strong wind at their back.
00:46:27And Gordon Brown, the tactics seem obvious, don't they?
00:46:30Well, I'm proud of the way the Scots boys have taken the game to Western Samoa
00:46:34right from the kick-off, they've run at them,
00:46:36they've ignored this strong wind,
00:46:38they've just said, let's just button down and get stuck in.
00:46:41And the score of 13-3, I must admit, I'm delighted with.
00:46:46And Gavin Hastings restarts and kicks long.
00:46:50As we said, he's got the wind behind him
00:46:52and our prediction in the commentary box
00:46:54is that Scotland will spend a lot of time kicking the ball up in the air
00:46:57and testing the Western Samoans near their own line.
00:47:04Bright sunshine now, but it's still very, very cold.
00:47:07The Western Samoans were here yesterday,
00:47:09couldn't believe how cold it was up here in Edinburgh.
00:47:12They're used to the South Sea islands.
00:47:17The restart, a hand-kick from Ria
00:47:19and White is bundled into touch.
00:47:23Certainly the ball is in the Western Samoan court now,
00:47:26they've got to try and find some answers.
00:47:28But first of all, I think he's trying to get some possession,
00:47:30quality possession going into the strong half.
00:47:32Ria has not been good, was not good in that first half.
00:47:39One by the Western Samoans and tied in by Alalatua.
00:47:45Ria goes in.
00:47:49And doesn't get it out.
00:47:51Go on, go on.
00:47:55John Jeffery, try-scorer.
00:48:01Along with Tony Stanger.
00:48:08And the Scottish forwards keen to get in on the scrum on this near side.
00:48:11It's Paul Bunnell against the Samoan captain, Adi Alofa.
00:48:17So far Scotland have won two against the head.
00:48:20OK.
00:48:24This time though, the scrum collapses on the far side
00:48:27where referee Derek Bevan is talking to David Soule,
00:48:30the Scotland captain, and his opposite number, Alalatua.
00:48:33The pick-up from Lamb back to scrum-half via.
00:48:37And Batchuk can't do anything except push the ball into touch.
00:48:40Stephen Batchuk, the brother of the New Zealand scrum-half, Graham Batchuk.
00:48:44Two, four, five, one.
00:48:51David Soule.
00:48:52Satisfied, I should think, as captain of Scotland at the front of the line there.
00:48:57And in the middle by Ria.
00:49:01Pushing and shoving by Scotland, so a penalty for the Samoans.
00:49:05Now what will they do? Will they kick for touch or will they tap and go?
00:49:07They'll tap and go. This is Fadi Alofa.
00:49:10Fadi Alofa.
00:49:13Bertwistle.
00:49:16Vaifali back to via.
00:49:19Vaienga. Vaienga.
00:49:31Upcoming.
00:49:43So, put in scrum, put in for Scotland.
00:49:49Over in the sunshine.
00:49:51The pick-up from White.
00:49:53White.
00:49:54And Jeffrey's on his shoulder.
00:49:56And Jeffrey keeps going.
00:50:01Allen.
00:50:02Samoan steal it.
00:50:04Batchuk.
00:50:05Vaienga.
00:50:07Vaienga tackled by Scott Hastings.
00:50:13And again, Scotland talk back.
00:50:16Tamela Tai.
00:50:18Fadi Alofa.
00:50:20Bertwistle.
00:50:25Via.
00:50:26Batchuk.
00:50:27Vaienga.
00:50:30Tangaloa.
00:50:32Good support, Ailupo.
00:50:35Ailupo still going.
00:50:41Scotland steal it.
00:50:42This is Chris Gray.
00:50:46Come on, come on.
00:50:49Samoans penalised.
00:50:52As they go offside.
00:50:56Tremendous attacking play there from the Western Samoans.
00:50:58They're certainly taking a leaf out of Scotland's first half book
00:51:01by running the game back at Scotland, asking questions of Scotland.
00:51:04But Scotland kick into space.
00:51:06They spotted that the full-back hadn't got back.
00:51:08And this is the Tukalo chase.
00:51:09Back goes Batchuk.
00:51:11Batchuk goes outside Tukalo and outside Hastings.
00:51:14Batchuk.
00:51:15Long way for Tukalo.
00:51:16Gets the support though on the inside.
00:51:18From Lima.
00:51:21What a superb passage of play, Gerald.
00:51:23It's been a very lively opening to the second half.
00:51:26One moment it looked as if Scotland were in defence,
00:51:28then Western Samoa.
00:51:29And they again counter-attack down that right.
00:51:35Samoans taking a leaf from Scotland's book.
00:51:37In the first half they ran just about everything
00:51:39because of the strong wind.
00:51:40Now the Samoans have to do the same.
00:51:42Tidied up this time by Scotland.
00:51:44Ball pushed out of Sol's hands.
00:51:46And Armstrong has to tidy.
00:51:54Calder.
00:51:58Again that tackling's good.
00:51:59Armstrong.
00:52:00Chalmers.
00:52:03A high kick. Underneath it is Lima.
00:52:05Lima.
00:52:06Oh, good take on his fingertips.
00:52:07Now Lima.
00:52:09Tangaloa.
00:52:10Tangaloa.
00:52:13Big Armstrong.
00:52:14Tangaloa.
00:52:16Steps inside.
00:52:17And goes straight through one tackle.
00:52:19He's still going.
00:52:21But Armstrong is there first.
00:52:27And the body's diving across.
00:52:29The Scottish body's penalised though this time.
00:52:33And Western Samoa's got the penalty.
00:52:35Vaya.
00:52:36Wants to take a quick one.
00:52:37Fadi Alofa.
00:52:40Lamb.
00:52:41Lamb.
00:52:42Good tackle from Geoffrey.
00:52:44Butcher.
00:52:46Lima.
00:52:48Lima shrugs off Ducolo and kicks ahead.
00:52:51Lima chases.
00:52:53And the ball just goes into touch as Weir goes back
00:52:56and has to leak the hoardings.
00:52:58But the game has been so loose in many ways in this second half.
00:53:02It's very exciting of course.
00:53:03Plenty of good running.
00:53:04But Scotland themselves must look to their tackling.
00:53:07Several examples so far in the second half
00:53:09where there's been very loose tackling in the Scottish defence.
00:53:12Probably because they've been spread so often.
00:53:15And so wide.
00:53:16Scottish line on their own line.
00:53:18They're just a metre away.
00:53:20Taken by Weir in the middle.
00:53:21What a good take.
00:53:28And Armstrong.
00:53:30He hasn't made touch.
00:53:32Lima.
00:53:33A long pass infield for Bunce.
00:53:36A loophole.
00:53:37Butcher.
00:53:39Butcher passed Tangalore outside him.
00:53:41Tangalore.
00:53:42Good tackle from Gavin Hastings.
00:53:45Samoans still have it.
00:53:51You've got to make the touch, Paul Brown, haven't you?
00:53:53Listen, it's criminal when you've got the ball in your hands.
00:53:56You're inside your own 22.
00:53:57You must make the clearing kicks get into touch.
00:54:00It's just a basic.
00:54:01But now the ball's back in the Western Samoans' hands.
00:54:06Samoans with their tails up.
00:54:08Two good attacks so far.
00:54:09This scrum fire.
00:54:10This is Tangalore.
00:54:12This is Bunce.
00:54:14Good defence.
00:54:21Well, if Scotland started the first half with some fireworks,
00:54:25certainly it's the turn of the Western Samoans.
00:54:27Taking, as you said, Gordon, the leaf out of the Scottish book.
00:54:29They're really running at the Scottish defence.
00:54:32Whatever ball they get, the ball is kept in the hands.
00:54:36This is going to be a cracking match if it continues like this.
00:54:39Vaya.
00:54:40The scrum half.
00:54:42And again in that front row.
00:54:44All sorts of problems there.
00:54:50There's Brian Williams in the middle of your picture.
00:54:52Just two rows back.
00:54:54The Samoans win the ball.
00:54:56This is fed for Vayana.
00:54:59First in is Vaya Farley.
00:55:01Vaya gets hands on the ball, but Armstrong steals it for Scotland.
00:55:06And the Samoan body's dialed over.
00:55:15And again, talking at the referee.
00:55:17Mr Devon won't take any lip.
00:55:22So Scotland get an extra 10 metres.
00:55:26And Gavin Hastings makes it a few more than that.
00:55:29Gavin Hastings, the full-back.
00:55:32Five points already.
00:55:35Well, Scotland certainly know now, Alistair,
00:55:37that the second half isn't going to be a walkover.
00:55:39Just a matter of getting down into the Western Samoans' half
00:55:41and putting points on the board.
00:55:44One at the back by Western Samoa, but stolen by Weah for Scotland.
00:55:49Armstrong to Chalmers.
00:55:51Kicks for position.
00:55:54And forces the Samoans back on their heels.
00:56:00And that's where we take the sting of the Western Samoans.
00:56:02The Western Samoans have that long diagonal kick,
00:56:04forcing their heavier foes to trundle across field.
00:56:09Craig Chalmers then.
00:56:11An outside half.
00:56:13Still comparatively inexperienced,
00:56:15but vital to Scotland's efforts.
00:56:18It's the 20th cap.
00:56:19It was only 23 earlier this week.
00:56:25And the Samoans are back in defence.
00:56:27This is Tumulatai.
00:56:29Won by Burt Whistle, though, for Samoa.
00:56:33Vaya.
00:56:34Can't hold it.
00:56:36Scotland, though, go offside.
00:56:40And the tap from Tumulatai.
00:56:41And Fatih Alofa.
00:56:44Chalmers gets hands on it.
00:56:46And Calder dives in for Scotland.
00:56:53And then Scotland win the put-in.
00:56:55With Scotland 13-3 ahead.
00:56:58And the Samoans are back in defence.
00:57:00With Scotland 13-3 ahead.
00:57:03And, at the moment, looking for favourites to go through
00:57:05to the semi-final here at Murray Field.
00:57:09The pick-up from White.
00:57:11Shield.
00:57:12Hastings.
00:57:13Gavin Hastings.
00:57:15Stays upright in the tackle.
00:57:19Creates a target for his forwards.
00:57:20Back it comes for Armstrong.
00:57:24And whoever wins this match, of course,
00:57:25will play the winner of the match
00:57:27which is following this one live on ITV.
00:57:29It's England against France in Paris.
00:57:34It looks, at the moment, as if it's going to be Scotland,
00:57:36although there's still a lot of rugby left in this match, Gerald.
00:57:39Yes, indeed.
00:57:40And I was just thinking how well
00:57:43Gavin Hastings has played for Scotland this afternoon.
00:57:46So often he's had the ball in his hands
00:57:48when he's gone into the tackle
00:57:49and the ball emerges.
00:57:50He's always made certain that the ball comes back on his side.
00:57:52The ball doesn't die with him,
00:57:54nor does it go to the opposition.
00:57:55Good play from him throughout this afternoon.
00:57:59Certainly big and powerful, Gavin Hastings.
00:58:01And this is Graham Shield, the injured player.
00:58:05He's only a youngster.
00:58:06Only 21, winning his second cap today.
00:58:08He came on as a replacement for Chalmers in the last match.
00:58:12And plays club rugby with Chalmers.
00:58:23And still those front rows have a score or two to settle.
00:58:30Yes, and Salmohan's tied it up.
00:58:32Oh, good play from Viafale.
00:58:36Lays the ball back for Peralini.
00:58:40Vaya, Batchop.
00:58:42Buntz, long pass.
00:58:43Ailupo.
00:58:45Inside.
00:58:46To Lamb.
00:58:50Vaya.
00:58:51Batchop again.
00:58:52Vaienga.
00:58:53Ailupo.
00:58:54Oh, poor pass on the intercept.
00:58:56Ailupo.
00:58:57Oh, poor pass on the intercept by Tukulo.
00:59:01And unfortunately, as Ivan Tukulo goes racing in to score
00:59:05and the post already, the referee has blown back.
00:59:09The Scottish were offside.
00:59:11And...
00:59:13poor old Ivan Tukulo.
00:59:15I thought he'd scored another try for Scotland.
00:59:18But the whistle had already gone.
00:59:20You can see it, the tackler there, offside.
00:59:24And although Tukulo picked it up and sprinted home,
00:59:28the penalty had already been awarded in Western Samoa's favour.
00:59:35What a wonderful passage of play that was from Western Samoa.
00:59:38They've got a terrific back row in Viafale, Lamb and Peralini.
00:59:42And in that extended movement, attacking movement from them,
00:59:45starting on their own 22-metre line,
00:59:47looked unpromising to begin with at the back of the scrum,
00:59:50but so influential, this back row trio of Western Samoa.
00:59:59Here it is.
01:00:00They've won some good balls and good passing.
01:00:02When we say earlier on that they have the efficiency and the discipline
01:00:05so often at forward,
01:00:06they certainly show the Polynesian style and flair in the back division.
01:00:10Some good handling from them.
01:00:11Winning the loose possession once more.
01:00:14And back live, they're doing it again.
01:00:16The Western Samoans down that bright touchline.
01:00:21Superb play, that was Peralini, number 7, charging forward.
01:00:27And they're certainly taking the game to Scotland, the Western Samoans.
01:00:31Interestingly, that back row you were talking about, Gerald,
01:00:3410 years a man younger than their counterparts,
01:00:37the venerable Scottish back row of Calder, Geoffrey and White.
01:00:40And they've really played an influential part in this World Cup
01:00:43for the Western Samoans.
01:00:45Aimed at the back for one of them.
01:00:47Untidily.
01:00:48Scotland fire through.
01:00:50Chris Gray.
01:00:55Gray again.
01:01:00Armstrong wants to get hands on it.
01:01:01But the Samoans dive over.
01:01:12Gavin Hastings.
01:01:14Will kick for touch.
01:01:17And successfully.
01:01:2414 minutes of his second half gone.
01:01:26Scotland 13, Western Samoa 3.
01:01:31And this line out.
01:01:34On the far side.
01:01:36Scotland 1, slightly more line outs, more cleanly certainly.
01:01:39And that's another good one.
01:01:40This is Shield.
01:01:42Kick ahead.
01:01:43Is meant for position.
01:01:44And by Luko, the noble has shepherded the ball into touch.
01:01:49So Scotland quite obviously content to play the ball near,
01:01:53as near as they can to the Western Samoan line.
01:02:03Toumala Tai.
01:02:04The four square Samoan hooker.
01:02:08Geoffrey is at the front.
01:02:10Weir gets hands on it.
01:02:11Armstrong has to tidy up.
01:02:12Armstrong!
01:02:18A pick up from Weir.
01:02:21Scotland desperate for that ball.
01:02:22They pick it up.
01:02:23Duralin.
01:02:26Hands on it.
01:02:27Hands on it from the Samoans.
01:02:30Derek Bevan's signal.
01:02:32Can't be mistaken.
01:02:34The Samoans penalised for handling the ball in that way.
01:02:37The Samoans penalised for handling the ball in that way.
01:02:41And this will give a kick at goal for Gavin Hastings.
01:02:44That's the difference that the win has made really.
01:02:46In the first half, when Scotland were in this position,
01:02:48so the captain made certain that they took the quick one and ran at them.
01:02:52But now with the advantage of the win,
01:02:53certainly he wants to give the advantage to Hastings.
01:02:56But also I would have thought to let Scotland themselves settle down.
01:03:01Yes, you saw the hand coming through there.
01:03:02But you know, I've really got to take my hat off to Gary Armstrong,
01:03:05the Scottish crumb half,
01:03:06because the ball got thumped back from the line-out.
01:03:09It went behind him and he still went back, recovered,
01:03:13regained the situation and attacked.
01:03:15Ran infield to keep the ball in play.
01:03:17There he is.
01:03:19What a man.
01:03:20A hard, nuggety little individual.
01:03:23Again, only been playing two or three years in international rugby.
01:03:27But as hard as nails.
01:03:28The British lion as well.
01:03:30As is this man, Gavin Hastings.
01:03:36That's it.
01:03:54Hastings, successful again.
01:03:58Another superb penalty from Gavin Hastings.
01:04:00His eighth point of the match.
01:04:01And Scotland, 16, Western Samoa, 3.
01:04:05We've had 17 minutes of this second half.
01:04:10And that was great reward for the Scottish forward effort in the second half.
01:04:14I feel sorry for the Western Samoan forwards,
01:04:16because of all the hard work they have done since half-time.
01:04:19And they've had no reward for it whatsoever.
01:04:21So now the Scottish forwards' tails are up.
01:04:24My Lupo restarts.
01:04:27That's meant for Bunce to chase.
01:04:29Bunce gets the knee to it.
01:04:32Gray has to recover.
01:04:33He's bundled over by Fatih Alofa.
01:04:37Now they want it.
01:04:38Vaya digs it out.
01:04:40Batchup, the drop-goal.
01:04:42Hits it well.
01:04:44And successfully, straight between the post, Stephen Batchup.
01:04:48A superb goal by Stephen Batchup.
01:04:50There we go, Stephen Batchup.
01:04:53A superb drop-goal for Western Samoa.
01:04:5718 minutes of this second half gone.
01:04:59It's Scotland, 16, Western Samoa, 6.
01:05:02Great skill from the outside half.
01:05:04It's so important for the Western Samoans to respond quickly to that penalty of Gavin Hastings.
01:05:08And what a beautifully struck ball that is from the outside half.
01:05:11He was under a bit of pressure from White,
01:05:13but beautifully struck and very accurate.
01:05:21Stephen Batchup, the brother of Graham Batchup, the New Zealand scrum half.
01:05:26And plays many times with him for Canterbury down in New Zealand.
01:05:32Stephen Batchup, 26 years old.
01:05:36Scotland restart, long kick from Gavin Hastings.
01:05:50So the 22 drop-out for the Western Samoans.
01:05:59Nailupo, the full-back, is the man who takes these restart kicks.
01:06:09Hands to it from Viafali, and tidied up by Tourmalatai.
01:06:14Batchup, the long pass, Vaienga.
01:06:17Lima's going to chase that.
01:06:21And Nailupo, feeding Bunce.
01:06:23Bunce dummies.
01:06:26Back inside for the Samoans.
01:06:28Via, Batchup.
01:06:31Vaienga.
01:06:32Vaienga!
01:06:34Run by Scotland though.
01:06:35Vernell.
01:06:37And Jeffrey.
01:06:42Armstrong.
01:06:44Armstrong.
01:06:46Kicks for the corner.
01:06:47Zangaloa has to go back.
01:06:53And touches down for the 22 drop-out.
01:06:57I was surprised at that kick coming from Armstrong,
01:06:59because he looked to me as if he had plenty of men to his right then,
01:07:01could have kept the ball in the hand.
01:07:03Good position to attack in fact,
01:07:04but he chose, incorrectly in my mind, to kick for the corner.
01:07:13Nailupo.
01:07:18Stolen by Calder.
01:07:23Armstrong.
01:07:25Chalmers, will he get the drop-out goal?
01:07:26Charged down by Batchup.
01:07:28Hastings has to go back.
01:07:30And just gets a foot to it.
01:07:37Well the Scottish crowd had their hearts and their mouths there,
01:07:39but certainly Gavin Hastings was sharp enough to recover the situation.
01:07:43Shorten line-out called by the Samoans.
01:07:45Yohan Ahni gets a hand to it.
01:07:47This is Fadi Alofa.
01:07:50It's inside to Bertwistle.
01:07:54Baia.
01:07:55And Batchup.
01:07:57This is Parolini.
01:08:01And the Samoans not quite there first.
01:08:04And as they dived over,
01:08:07they were penalised and Scotland get the tap penalty.
01:08:14And Gavin Hastings indicates that he wants to kick at goal.
01:08:19A monstrous kick this will be.
01:08:21It sure will, but
01:08:23at the restart kick after the Western Samoans scored their drop-goal,
01:08:27I mean he very casually kicked the ball right between the sticks from the kick-off.
01:08:31So it's certainly well within his distance.
01:08:37Well the ball landed in fact,
01:08:38just near the dead-ball line.
01:08:40So you had the distance and had the height and the accuracy.
01:08:45He's had a Super World Cup so far.
01:08:49Kicked 33 points before this match.
01:08:52Kicked another two penalties and the conversion,
01:08:54so he's on 41 for the tournament already.
01:08:5922 minutes gone in the second half.
01:09:03And the Samoans,
01:09:0422 minutes gone in the second half.
01:09:20A sense of anti-climax there.
01:09:23The crowd went silent.
01:09:24They waited for Gavin Hastings to take the kick.
01:09:27And the ball fell over.
01:09:31But this gives a better testimony than anything
01:09:33how strong the wind is out there in fact.
01:09:35That he is able, confidently enough, to take a pot-shot from this distance.
01:09:39Ian McGeek in there, looking on.
01:09:52Hastings
01:09:54Thumps it!
01:09:57Straight over the post!
01:09:58What a kick from Gavin Hastings!
01:10:01A marvellous, marvellous kick
01:10:03from the big Scottish full-back.
01:10:05And from the moment he struck it,
01:10:07we knew that was going straight between the posts.
01:10:11I happen to think that he's had such a fine game this afternoon.
01:10:14If we passed our minds back to the very first seconds of the game,
01:10:17how he got involved with the running of the ball at that moment.
01:10:20He's done a lot of tackling since then.
01:10:22He's done well in running.
01:10:23And certainly, that superb kick
01:10:25deserved the three points.
01:10:28This is it.
01:10:29Eye on the ball.
01:10:30And he really struck it, didn't he?
01:10:32He looked back, and he knew it was going over, didn't he?
01:10:35Yes, there he is, very pleased by that one.
01:10:38And the restart, though,
01:10:40sees Scotland winning possession.
01:10:43Armstrong
01:10:45Saw there was a gap there.
01:10:47He kicks long and forces Ailupo back.
01:10:51And Ailupo, into touch.
01:10:57Nothing that Chelsea could do.
01:10:59And good tactics indeed from Scotland,
01:11:01and especially their scum half, Gary Armstrong.
01:11:10Scotland try to peel round the back.
01:11:12Won by Perrolini, knocked on by Lam.
01:11:15And Sow
01:11:16also knocked it on.
01:11:18The first one, though, from Lam.
01:11:20So the scrum down and the put-in for Scotland.
01:11:27Scotland 19, Western Samoa 6.
01:11:31The back row move.
01:11:32White to Armstrong.
01:11:33To Calder, Calder the dummy.
01:11:35Inside him is Geoffrey.
01:11:36Calder keeps going.
01:11:39Armstrong, Armstrong now.
01:11:43Held in the tackle.
01:11:48Penalised this time, Scotland.
01:11:51100 man down there via Farley
01:11:54for Western Samoa.
01:11:55Preventing his scum half from taking a quick penalty.
01:12:02Yes, the Scottish charge to the line there
01:12:04was certainly superbly backed up.
01:12:06Finlay Calder, I felt, went just slightly too far.
01:12:13Some confusion down there.
01:12:15Nobody quite sure what's going on.
01:12:17Some confusion down there.
01:12:19Nobody quite knew whether the referee had said start play or not.
01:12:23The Scots charge forward.
01:12:25And David Sow can see the funny side of that.
01:12:31Crowd calm.
01:12:32There's a man being treated there.
01:12:34And
01:12:36Scotland thought the penalty had been taken.
01:12:42Wait for the injured man, says the referee.
01:12:45Now he's happier.
01:12:48All surprise having been lost.
01:12:50Steve Batchett will kick the touch.
01:12:52No, he won't. He sliced it.
01:12:54Well into the midfield.
01:12:56This is Tukalo.
01:12:57Oh, that side step off the left foot.
01:13:00This is White.
01:13:01What a tackle from Tangaloa.
01:13:03Stanger.
01:13:04Bundled into touch.
01:13:15It's been a hard physical game.
01:13:19Scotland will be happy to be 19 points to 6 up.
01:13:2114 minutes or so to go.
01:13:24Won by Ioane for Samoa.
01:13:26Scotland go offside.
01:13:29Now they'll try and run this one.
01:13:31They're so far away from the Scottish line.
01:13:35This is Lamb.
01:13:40Valle.
01:13:41And Batchett.
01:13:42Batchett steps inside.
01:13:43Now where's the support?
01:13:45Comes now from Alalatoa.
01:13:47Tomlatai.
01:13:48Valle.
01:13:49Shows the dummy.
01:13:50Valle.
01:13:52Long pass inside.
01:13:53Tomlatai.
01:13:54What a good take from the hooker.
01:13:57Valle again.
01:13:58Fatialofa.
01:14:01Alalatoa's in there.
01:14:02And again for Western Samoa.
01:14:06Tangaloa.
01:14:07Tangaloa goes straight through the tackle.
01:14:09Tangaloa.
01:14:10Then outside him.
01:14:11Lima can't hold it.
01:14:13Buntz recovers.
01:14:15And drops the ball again.
01:14:17And penalised.
01:14:18But what a breathless piece of play from the Samoans.
01:14:22That was some superb dummy scissors to begin with.
01:14:25By Valle coming down here on the left and passing it in.
01:14:28Then was it to Alalatoa and Fatialofa.
01:14:31It's a marvellous play.
01:14:32And how well then they kept the possession to move right again.
01:14:36But for all that effort,
01:14:37they're still 30 metres or so from the Scottish line.
01:14:40And the Scottish have a scrum.
01:14:44Gavin Hastings has time and space to make a good touch.
01:14:50I've got to say I found it incredible there
01:14:52when the Western Samoans attack broke down there
01:14:55when the pass went behind the player.
01:14:57The Scottish crowd groaned.
01:15:01Well, not that many points up.
01:15:03There's great rugby from the Samoans.
01:15:06Superb handling skills.
01:15:10Real commitment.
01:15:11But piling through is Jeffery.
01:15:16And a knock on though.
01:15:20Via White forward.
01:15:21George Weir has to come all the way back.
01:15:34Samoans scrum.
01:15:36Batch-up.
01:15:38Vaienga.
01:15:40Ailupo.
01:15:41Tangeloa again.
01:15:42Tangeloa.
01:15:44Takes some stopping doesn't he?
01:15:45Parolini.
01:15:47Lamb.
01:15:50Lamb.
01:15:53Batch-up.
01:15:55Ailupo.
01:15:57Batch-up.
01:15:59Ailupo.
01:16:00Batch-up.
01:16:01Ailupo.
01:16:03Parolini.
01:16:05Parolini is bundled over by Calder.
01:16:10Gray.
01:16:11He's pushed in the touch.
01:16:14And again we see how useful and how influential
01:16:186, 7 and 8 are for Western Samoa.
01:16:21Softly in the heat of the action.
01:16:23The build-up for Western Samoa has been so good.
01:16:25They've been terrific, most good handling.
01:16:27But somehow or other it goes astray at the very last moment.
01:16:31Tomolatai.
01:16:32The hooker.
01:16:34Aims at the back for Viafali.
01:16:37Scottish jerseys pulling down.
01:16:40So a penalty for Samoa.
01:16:42I hope they do.
01:16:44They must run it surely.
01:16:48Well I got that wrong didn't I?
01:16:50Decided not to run it.
01:16:52And Via the scrum half will kick a goal.
01:16:54They've got 11, 10 minutes or so left of this match.
01:16:5719 points to 6 down.
01:16:59So perhaps they feel that points on the board
01:17:01are valuable at this stage.
01:17:03I'm sure it'll be of some concern to Ian McGeehan,
01:17:05the Scottish coach, too, in that
01:17:07Scotland have given away, what is it,
01:17:098 penalties in the second half
01:17:11to 5 given to the Western Samoans.
01:17:16I think also though, if I remember from my playing days,
01:17:19when the opposition were
01:17:21really trying to get the ascendancy,
01:17:23you were even more determined to kill the ball
01:17:26and try and stop the flow.
01:17:30And the possession to me in the line-o-two
01:17:32seems to have dried up for Scotland.
01:17:34The ball seems to have gone better,
01:17:36more cleanly to the Western Samoan side.
01:17:54Via.
01:17:56Fades off.
01:17:57Fades off.
01:17:59Off the post now.
01:18:01Gavin Hastings in trouble.
01:18:03But equal to it.
01:18:09A moment of trouble for Scotland
01:18:10as that ball looked to be fading away.
01:18:12Then it hit the post
01:18:14and bounced back.
01:18:15But Gavin Hastings was there to tidy up.
01:18:18That's Via, the scrum half.
01:18:23And goal kicker.
01:18:241 from 3 today.
01:18:27Nobody's getting that one except Gray.
01:18:31At the second attempt.
01:18:32Geoffrey.
01:18:33Armstrong.
01:18:36Oh, great kick.
01:18:37Great kick from the scrum half.
01:18:40Real tactical appreciation
01:18:42of what Scotland require from Gary Armstrong.
01:18:45And how much he has shouldered the responsibility
01:18:47at scrum half.
01:18:48He's played a very protective game
01:18:50of his outside half, Chalmers, this afternoon.
01:18:52Knowing, of course, that he's only
01:18:53just recovered from injury.
01:18:588 minutes of normal time to go.
01:19:01Scotland leading by 19 points to 6.
01:19:06And piling through.
01:19:08Tidied up by the Samoans.
01:19:21Samoans winning the put-in.
01:19:23Just about having a bit of forward momentum.
01:19:25The bottom of it is
01:19:27Veer Farley.
01:19:28A flank forward.
01:19:30Scored a try against Wales.
01:19:32It's been instrumental this afternoon.
01:19:36Via.
01:19:38The pick-up from Lamb.
01:19:39Fed to Vaienga.
01:19:40A little chip ahead.
01:19:42Chalmers takes it well
01:19:43and finds Hastings.
01:19:44Gavin Hastings.
01:19:47Hastings at high.
01:19:49And it goes straight into touch.
01:19:50So they'll be back level with where Hastings kicked it.
01:19:55A rare mistake from the full-back.
01:19:57It's had a super game today.
01:20:00Possession there.
01:20:01Looking for Samoans.
01:20:02Appearing to have more than that.
01:20:04Although we up here in the comedy box
01:20:05might disagree with that.
01:20:077 minutes left.
01:20:08Scotland 19.
01:20:09Western Samoa 6.
01:20:10Scotland win the short-line through Veer.
01:20:12This is Allen.
01:20:15Allen, the tackle coming in from Fatih Alofa.
01:20:17But Allen stays on his feet.
01:20:22Armstrong.
01:20:24Sowell.
01:20:26Sowell finds Wight.
01:20:27Derek Wight.
01:20:30Gray.
01:20:33Armstrong.
01:20:34The dummy.
01:20:39Wight picks up.
01:20:41Jeffrey has it.
01:20:43Try again.
01:20:48Well, it looked to be John Jeffrey
01:20:50right at the base of that ladder one again.
01:20:53He's not making it difficult for us.
01:20:55But John Jeffrey has scored his second try of the match.
01:21:00The wide shot from Kelso.
01:21:02John Jeffrey has scored again
01:21:04and made the game absolutely safe for Scotland.
01:21:07Well, the sheer belligerence there
01:21:09of the Scottish forward support play.
01:21:11It was quite magnificent.
01:21:12And, of course, the big man.
01:21:13What a welcome he's getting back to the halfway line here.
01:21:16But there you see him.
01:21:17He drives on the Scottish back certainly right behind him.
01:21:20And you can see him twisting down there
01:21:22right on the line and giving the score.
01:21:24Even has the audacity when we look up at the referee
01:21:27to say, OK, did you see that, pal?
01:21:30Good positioning from the referee, Derek Bevan.
01:21:32He could see everything there.
01:21:34And John Jeffrey.
01:21:37Leading try scorer for Scottish forward.
01:21:44Now has 11.
01:21:45He's just inched ahead of Derek Wight.
01:21:48He's also the most capped Scottish flank forward.
01:21:53But if he, Jeffrey, got the try
01:21:55and all the forwards did well there to get behind
01:21:58and to get him over the line.
01:21:59But the man in that movement, to me, that did so much
01:22:01was David Sowell, the captain, in fact,
01:22:03who got the ball, was tackled,
01:22:04and he gave a superb...
01:22:06He maintained possession, first of all,
01:22:07then gave a superb pass.
01:22:09The movement could so easily have stopped there.
01:22:16Hastings.
01:22:18Oh, he's on such good form.
01:22:20It's well caught, Gavin Hastings.
01:22:23Another superb kick from him,
01:22:25and Scotland go well clear now.
01:22:29We've had 35 minutes of the second half,
01:22:32just five minutes to go,
01:22:33and Scotland are leading by 25 points to six.
01:22:39And of course, Alistair, all the Scots now in the crowd
01:22:41are all thinking about this afternoon over in Paris,
01:22:44hoping that England are going to win.
01:22:46Here's JJ picking the ball up.
01:22:47The Scottish forward's driving him.
01:22:49He stays on his feet,
01:22:50and then he gets, obviously, twist round and scores.
01:22:54But now we're looking forward to England speaking France
01:22:56this afternoon and then coming here next Saturday.
01:23:03Scotland through Armstrong.
01:23:06Tangeloa goes back.
01:23:09Tangeloa.
01:23:10So big, so strong.
01:23:13Now Scotland steal it through Chalmers and Gray.
01:23:23Well advantaged from the knock-on by the Western Samoans,
01:23:26so Scotland will get that put in.
01:23:29It's all the Scottish boys seem to be shepherding
01:23:31big Tangeloa, the big left winger, infield.
01:23:34Nobody wanted to tackle him head on.
01:23:36They're not so daft.
01:23:38Armstrong with the put-in.
01:23:39White with the pick-up.
01:23:40Armstrong to Calder.
01:23:41To Stanger in space.
01:23:43Tony Stanger.
01:23:45Parolini comes in for the tackle.
01:23:46Inside to Geoffrey.
01:23:47Can't make a hat-trick.
01:23:48A knock-on.
01:23:51White just about held up there,
01:23:53but there was a knock-on beforehand.
01:23:55But again, a crisp move from Scotland.
01:23:59And crisp from the back row.
01:24:00They've used this move several times during the season.
01:24:02They've used it.
01:24:04And crisp from the back row.
01:24:05They've used this move several times during the afternoon.
01:24:07Here we find Stanger at the end of it,
01:24:09but the good work had already been done
01:24:11from the base of the scrum.
01:24:12First, White, Calder, who gave the pass to Stanger.
01:24:18Yes, in fact, JJ seemed to actually overrun
01:24:21Tony Stanger there.
01:24:22He was going too fast.
01:24:28Well, the crowd want to cap their afternoon
01:24:30with another try.
01:24:34And they get a free kick.
01:24:36So, what they do?
01:24:37Sowell, David Sowell.
01:24:41Lays the ball back.
01:24:45Not coming.
01:24:49And again, a scrum put in, though, for Scotland.
01:24:55Two minutes left of normal time.
01:24:59Scotland, 25 points to 6,
01:25:01Scotland, 25 points to 6 ahead.
01:25:05Three tries from Stanger.
01:25:07And two...
01:25:08Tony Stanger has two of them from John Jeffery,
01:25:10one from Stanger.
01:25:1213 points from Gavin Hastings.
01:25:15And rock-solid scrummaging from them.
01:25:18Weston-Symonds collapse it,
01:25:19and Scotland get the penalty now.
01:25:23They've won the match.
01:25:26Do they want to go for a try?
01:25:29The crowd want them to,
01:25:30but David Sowell says no.
01:25:32We'll have a kick at goal.
01:25:34And why give up the chance of three points
01:25:36when it's there?
01:25:37I think it's well worth mentioning at this stage,
01:25:39because it looks now that Scotland quite clearly
01:25:41are going to win.
01:25:42You must remember the value of this Weston-Symonds team,
01:25:45how they've enlivened this World Cup in the early stages.
01:25:48Certainly down in Wales, we warmed them down there,
01:25:50and they played some lovely rugby,
01:25:52as we have seen this afternoon.
01:25:53They've contributed such a lot
01:25:55to this World Cup so far.
01:25:56But they must rue, I think,
01:25:57the early moments of the second half
01:25:59where they played such good rugby,
01:26:00had plenty of possession,
01:26:01but failed to get the points on the board.
01:26:12Getting points on the board,
01:26:13no problem for this man, Gavin Hastings.
01:26:17Thirteen points already in this match.
01:26:20Forty-six in the competition so far.
01:26:30Get in.
01:26:32Get in.
01:26:34Get in.
01:26:36Get in.
01:26:37Get in.
01:26:38Get in.
01:26:43Get in.
01:26:44Get in.
01:26:47Yes, shout the crowd.
01:26:50Yes, shout Gavin Hastings,
01:26:51and we're on the stroke of full time now.
01:26:54Scotland 28, Weston-Symonds 6.
01:26:57Only injury time to play,
01:26:58to play but the Samoans still want to keep playing they've contributed as Gerald said so much to this
01:27:03tournament played some great rugby all through and again today so far only a penalty and a
01:27:09drop goal for their efforts but they really have warmed the crowd
01:27:17yes and what fabulous skill of showing and innovation winning ball from the set piece
01:27:22restart for my loophole this is
01:27:40once again batch up long pass this way to lamb
01:27:44they take some stopping by anger
