00:00This holiday season, enjoy new seasons of your favorite science shows from the Department of Science and Technology.
00:06This is the youth-oriented show, Expert Talk, and the popular science magazine show, CN Sikat,
00:12that will be shown here on People's Television Network starting this October.
00:16And to give us important information and details about that, we will now have the host of Expert Talk,
00:23AJ Castro, and of course, the host of CN Sikat, Diego Reyes.
00:30Good morning and welcome to Rising Sun.
00:32Good morning, thanks so much for having us.
00:34Welcome back to AJ, and welcome to PTV4.
00:36Yes, first time, first time.
00:38Alright, let's go first to AJ. This is the second season of Expert Talk here on PTV.
00:44What are the new things this season?
00:47This time, it's very exciting.
00:49Because it's really bigger and better.
00:52Because literally, we went to different parts of the Philippines
00:56to look for young people who are good at science, technology, and innovation.
01:01These are what we call next-gen experts.
01:03So really, their stories are very inspiring.
01:06Very relatable.
01:08That's why we want to show the viewers that if these young people can do it,
01:13we also want to inspire them to be able to do it.
01:17Okay, you said inspiration.
01:19But AJ, you had the opportunity to meet these young inventors and young scientists.
01:26What did you learn here that can inspire these students?
01:30Maybe, because even before, when it comes to young people,
01:37science is a bit overwhelming.
01:39It's not like them.
01:41They focus more on the difficult terminologies.
01:44But what we're showing here, what Expert Talk is showing,
01:48is that if we focus on the other side of science,
01:51what can help us in our daily lives,
01:54you can really love science.
01:56That's what I saw in our young people, in the next-gen experts that we introduced.
02:01And it's also exciting because the support that people around them give
02:07to their families, to government agencies,
02:10or NGOs that are really helping them.
02:13So, it's very inspiring.
02:15We're excited to watch that again by Expert Talk.
02:18Now, let's go to Ciencicat.
02:20Diego, it's your first time watching this program on PTV.
02:24Please introduce Ciencicat to us.
02:26Yes, it's our first time here on PTV.
02:29This is season 5.
02:31So, I hope you'll watch Ciencicat.
02:33So basically, Ciencicat is a telemagazine science show
02:36that features extraordinary stories of ordinary Filipinos
02:40that use science, technology, and innovation
02:43to solve the pressing problems in their communities
02:48and hopefully in the country.
02:50Diego, give us an example.
02:52What are the DOST projects about this?
02:55So, one of the projects that will feature in Ciencicat
02:59is Pharma Gallion X.
03:01So, Pharma Gallion X is a pharmaceutical company
03:04that uses 3D bioprinting
03:07to avoid or limit the use of animals
03:12for testing of topical products.
03:15So, usually, the use or production of make-ups
03:19or lotions are done by animals
03:23like rats, rabbits, guinea pigs.
03:26Here, in 3D printing, we're reducing that.
03:29So, through science and technology,
03:31it's already being done here in the Philippines.
03:33Okay, you also mentioned earlier
03:35the problems that are being solved
03:37by science and technology.
03:39What are the examples of problems
03:41that will only be solved by science and technology
03:43that will be featured here in Ciencicat?
03:45Very, very nice question.
03:47One that I'm thinking about
03:49is the project with Adamson University of DOST
03:53which uses powder
03:55to clean water.
03:57So, usually, let's say, for example,
03:59establishments, restaurants, hotels,
04:02even houses have waste water.
04:05So, that dirty water
04:07usually goes to larger bodies of water
04:11like the sea or rivers
04:13that pollute those bodies of water.
04:16Now, of course, they need filtration
04:19of large machines.
04:21Now, the project of Adamson and DOST
04:24is reducing that cost
04:26to just hundreds of pesos
04:28for the use of powder.
04:30So, they just treat the water
04:32and add powder.
04:34Automatically, there will be a process
04:36of cleaning
04:38so that before the water comes out,
04:40it's already clean.
04:42So, that's just one episode
04:44of our 13th episode
04:46of Ciencicat.
04:48Okay, but I have a question.
04:50Well, because of our youth today,
04:52especially students who are distracted
04:54from social media,
04:56how will you make it interesting
04:58and focus on things
05:00that are beneficial?
05:02Maybe for me,
05:04of course, using social media
05:06is a big part of it.
05:08So, what we did in Expert Talk
05:10is that we have different segments
05:12that are very engaging to the viewers
05:14and very catchy.
05:16So, there are challenges,
05:18there are fun ways that we do
05:20that are science-related
05:22so that their interest in watching
05:24social media can be watched
05:26So, those are the segments that we do
05:28with our next-gen experts.
05:30Okay, so far, what is your favorite segment
05:32compared to the ones you shot
05:34that really caught your interest?
05:36Maybe, aside from climbing mountains,
05:38we do different challenges
05:40that are very fun
05:42so that we can play
05:44four picks, one word
05:46so that different organisms can see
05:48and we can guess
05:50what the name is.
05:52So, there are a lot of very fun segments
05:54to watch.
05:56Okay, with AJ's personality,
05:58it seems like the kids will be encouraged
06:00to try different things
06:02so that they can be immersed
06:04in different things connected to science and technology.
06:06But, Diego, you're really connected
06:08to science-related because I understand
06:10you're a medtech graduate.
06:12Yes, so what I really finished
06:14was a pre-med course in medical technology
06:16so I did work in a hospital
06:18in a laboratory
06:20so I have a taste
06:23but when I saw
06:25the breadth of science,
06:27technology, and innovation
06:29when we were shooting Science Ikat
06:31and when we went around the Philippines
06:33I opened my mind
06:35to a wider, bigger perspective
06:37of what science really can do
06:39because inside the lab,
06:41the space is limited
06:43but when you go outside
06:45what we read in books
06:47what we see in movies
06:49comes to life
06:51and it's part of everyday life.
06:53What do you think
06:55is the future of science in the Philippines
06:57especially for young people?
06:59Based on what I've heard,
07:01it's really exciting
07:03because their desire
07:05and the projects they're doing
07:07is not just for themselves
07:09it's not just what I thought
07:11but their desire to help
07:13at a very young age
07:15they can really contribute
07:17to the science and technology community
07:19It's really inspiring
07:21to know that the projects
07:23they're doing
07:25will have a big effect
07:27or can be a solution
07:29to what we're facing
07:31here in the Philippines
07:33In connection with AJ
07:35because our next-gen inventors
07:37I hope we can feature them
07:39in Science Ikat
07:41Yes, the research
07:43if they're still doing research
07:45I hope in the near future
07:47they'll have the technology
07:49they'll be able to patent
07:51and use it in their communities
07:53that we can showcase
07:55because what we want in Science Ikat
07:57is to reach our fellow Filipinos
07:59that science, as AJ said
08:01shouldn't be overwhelming
08:03it should be reachable
08:05it should be accessible for everyone
08:07and not intimidating
08:09Yes, that's one thing
08:11for our young people to be interested
08:13that they'll be able to understand
08:15Yes, yes
08:17Okay, please to invite everyone
08:19to watch and catch
08:21the new season of DOST programs
08:23Go ahead, brother
08:45Yes, good morning to all of you
08:47I hope you'll watch
08:49our season 5 of Science Ikat
08:51It's my first time here at PTV
08:53that this program will be broadcast
08:55by the Department of Science and Technology
08:57I hope we'll all be excited
08:59because what we really want
09:01the core or mission of Science Ikat
09:03is to reach you
09:05the young Filipinos
09:07that are interested
09:09in science
09:11and technology
09:13and to reach you
09:15the programs of the Department of Science and Technology
09:17that can possibly solve
09:19your problems
09:21whether it's small or big
09:23whether you're young or old
09:25you can be a part
09:27of the solution to the problem you have
09:29So I hope you'll watch
