00:00Senior reporter Claire Pequelin who joins me from Jerusalem. Claire, what is Israel's
00:05endgame here with this targeted incursion? What is it targeting exactly?
00:12Israel's goal is to allow its residents, its citizens who live in the north of Israel to
00:18return home. 60,000 were evacuated from their homes after the October 7th attacks last year.
00:25The day after October 8th, Hezbollah began sending rockets into northern Israel in solidarity with
00:32Hamas. So that's the goal. Also to allow that whole northern border region to be in security
00:38for people who are living up there but whose towns haven't been evacuated, for them to live
00:42in security. And Israel says that it will be concentrating on trying to dismantle the tunnel
00:47network that it believes Hezbollah has built. What it says is it wants to avoid, wants to prevent
00:52Hezbollah from having the possibility of carrying out its own October 7th style attack. Now Hezbollah
01:00has been significantly degraded by Israel in recent weeks, particularly in the last few days,
01:07of course the killing of its leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut on Friday. But it is still
01:13capable of launching projectiles and rockets into Israel. We've had air raid sirens going off across
01:20the north of the country today, as well as in central Israel. We've had alerts coming through
01:24on our mobile phones for Tel Aviv, parts of central Israel. And here now the Israeli Home Front
01:30has actually put in new restrictions in Tel Aviv, central Israel and here where I am now in Jerusalem,
01:36restrictions allowing people to continue going to work if they have a shelter they can get to
01:42quickly. Educational activities can continue as long as children can get to shelters quickly. But
01:47key in this is that gatherings outside of more than 30 people as of this afternoon are not allowed
01:53and people gathering indoors can gather up to 300, any more than 300, and that's not allowed. So
02:00certainly while Hezbollah is clearly being degraded, we are seeing in Israel that it is
02:06capable of continuing to cause a threat in the skies.
02:09Clara, thank you for that. That's France 24's Clara Pakalan reporting from Jerusalem.
