00:00Cyberjaya should not be labelled as a failure.

00:05Although it did not achieve its ambition of becoming the next global technology and innovation

00:09hub, Tim Burnell, a geography professor at the National University of Singapore, said

00:13the Silicon Valley model was intended to be aspirational rather than a realistic goal

00:18for replication.

00:20Cyberjaya was launched in 1997 as the nucleus of the Multimedia Super Corridor project and

00:25a hub for information technology development, with the hope of transforming the country

00:30into a knowledge economy.

00:32Burnell said Cyberjaya was still a far cry from Silicon Valley in the US, which hosts

00:37a vast number of leading technology companies including Meta, Google and Apple.

00:41However, he said it became a small but actual tech-centred city, even if its overly ambitious

00:47goals from the 1990s have not been fully realised, with its cultural and linguistic diversity

00:53a selling point.

00:55Comparing Cyberjaya, Penang and Johor, Burnell said it was possible that the three zones

00:59could end up specialising in slightly different realms.

01:02He said Cyberjaya's advantage was its proximity to Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and KLIA.

01:07Johor's special economic zone would benefit from being near Singapore, while Penang had

01:12a longer history as a tech centre compared to the other locations.
