00:00Hi, I'm Ben Whitehouse and I'm one of the WIU referees and I'm here today to talk to you about positioning.
00:11Positioning is probably one of the most important tools in the referee toolbox and I'm here to tell you why it is important.
00:19We need to make sure that we're in the best position on the field to ensure fair play and safety of the players.
00:25So the first point is to make sure that we get there as quick as possible to make sure we make safe and accurate decisions at all times.
00:33So when we talk about getting there as quickly as possible, we've got to follow the ball or anticipate the flow of the game.
00:40When you do arrive there, what should you do? You've arrived quickly at the breakdown.
00:45The next thing you need to do is locate the ball as quick as possible and that then will help you find the best position for that particular phase of play.
00:53Don't get too close or you could get in the way.
00:57I've located the ball, now where should I position myself?
01:01If we imagine a clock face around the tackle, I should position myself at either 4 o'clock or 8 o'clock on the side of the team that has the ball.
01:10So I can see both attacking and defending off sidelines.
01:15If the ball then gets turned over, you can easily change position by taking a quick couple of steps to adopt the 8 o'clock or the 4 o'clock position on the opposite side of the ruck.
01:27If you position yourself on the wrong side of the ball, it's very difficult to see what's actually going on.
01:33Keep moving, don't stand still, be aware of where the ball is but don't be ball focused.
01:38Because when we're ball focused, we don't know what's going on behind our backs for offside and to look at the attacking side.
01:45So, let's recap. Firstly, we need to get there quickly and locate the ball.
01:50We've got to try and stay on the attacking side of play.
01:53We've got to stay at 4 o'clock or 8 o'clock.
01:57And then finally, try and get as much play as possible in front of you at all times.
02:02I hope that helps. Diolch am Wilio.
02:05And if you enjoyed this, there's plenty more resources on the WRU Game Locker.
