00:00We will begin with tonight.
00:04The Kansas City Chiefs and of course,
00:06the Atlanta Falcons battling it out right till the final buzzer.
00:10A little bit of a controversy at the end of the game,
00:12but in the end, the Chiefs win on the road.
00:14They do cover that three-point spread,
00:1622-17 in the final.
00:18Atlanta went up early in this game,
00:20Chiefs came back, it seemed to be a back and forth affair,
00:23but there was a play in the back of the end zone,
00:25a pass thrown to Kyle Pitts from Kirk Cousins.
00:29There's no flag on the play, the Chiefs escape again,
00:32and yes, folks, they just keep on winning.
00:35But are they playing well?
00:37I guess that's a fair question.
00:38Patrick Mahomes answered that last night.
00:41We haven't played good, I mean, really all three games.
00:44We've been able to win.
00:45I mean, that speaks to the character of the team,
00:47the grit, how we've been in these situations before.
00:51But I'll speak especially offensively,
00:53and me, myself, I feel like I haven't played very well.
00:56And that's not a stats thing,
00:58I just feel like I'm missing opportunities
01:00whenever they're out there and not throwing the ball
01:01in the exact spot I want it to be at.
01:02So it's about me getting back to my fundamentals,
01:05putting our guys in the right position,
01:06and then we gotta execute at a higher level offensively.
01:08If teams are gonna make us drive the field,
01:10we have to prove that we're able to do that.
01:11And I'm sure we'll get a lot of the same
01:13this next week with the Chargers.
01:15Yeah, and a big game coming up with the Chargers.
01:17The question will be for Los Angeles this week,
01:20and Jim Harbaugh put his best foot forward,
01:23but was it the best foot for the Chargers this past week?
01:27Because of course, Justin Herbert left that game
01:30with a key injury in that one, it was a high ankle spray.
01:33Meanwhile, Kirk Cousins, you know,
01:36beat up a little bit in this game,
01:37but did lead the team back almost to a victory,
01:39talked about coming up short.
01:41Disappointing night tonight.
01:44You know, you feel like you snatched defeat
01:48from the jaws of victory,
01:49is kind of how it felt a little bit,
01:51if I'm saying that right.
01:54You know, it was a great atmosphere tonight,
01:55our fan base was phenomenal.
01:57It was a great environment,
01:58and it was great to start fast.
02:02I was really proud of the way our defense
02:04held up in the second half,
02:05and kept getting us the ball back,
02:07giving us opportunities,
02:08and you know, there's just plenty I can point to
02:12that wasn't good enough to win this game tonight,
02:16but still felt like it was right there for us to win,
02:20and when you don't do it,
02:22it leaves you with a pretty sickening feeling.
02:24So that's life in this league.
02:28Yeah, and I would say right now,
02:29the Atlanta Falcons probably a little bit disappointing
02:32to start their season.
02:33They thought they'd get off
02:34to a little bit of a better start,
02:35but at least they did fight the Chiefs toe to toe.
02:37Meanwhile, the Minnesota Vikings
02:38have no complaints whatsoever.
02:40Their defense was dominant yesterday
02:43as they crushed the Texans three, four to seven.
02:46The big story for Minnesota this season
02:48has been the play of their defense
02:49and their quarterback, Sam Darnall,
02:52who threw not one, not two, not three,
02:55but four touchdown passes yesterday,
02:58including one to Jordan Jefferson at the start of the game.
03:01The Vikings have the best record right now in the NFC.
03:05The Houston Texans will need to pick up the pieces
03:07a little bit to figure out what went wrong for them.
03:09They have not played great also, by the way,
03:11Houston, I would say, through the first three games.
03:13The most insane finish of NFL Sunday
03:16definitely goes to the Rams and 49ers.
03:2049ers were up big in this game.
03:23In fact, they were up 14 points at the half,
03:25led throughout the game,
03:26but all of a sudden the 49ers defense
03:28could not pick up what Matthew Stafford
03:30and the offense were doing.
03:32Throwing deep balls, going down the field.
03:3549ers couldn't stop them.
03:36They come all the way back,
03:38kick a field goal late, 27 to 24,
03:40an outright upset win as six point underdogs.
03:43Also the Dallas Cowboys, again, up against it,
03:47against the Baltimore Ravens.
03:48The Ravens go up big.
03:50And for the second straight week,
03:52they take their foot completely off the pedal.
03:54Dallas comes all the way back, a 28 to 25 final
03:59as Derek Henry went nuts in this game.
04:02Dallas has to figure out what they are doing on defense.
04:04Can't stop the run at all.
04:06And meanwhile, the Philadelphia Eagles
04:08win a thriller in a low scoring affair,
04:1015 to 12 final drive in New Orleans
04:14as Jalen Hurts and company come through.
04:16The Eagles get the win.
04:17The Saints suffer their first loss of the season.
04:20The Indianapolis Colts, they got a win yesterday.
04:22It also didn't come easy against the Chicago Bears.
04:25It was pretty sloppy game for both quarterbacks.
04:27Caleb Williams, his numbers were great
04:29in terms of passing yards,
04:30but through a couple of interceptions,
04:32Williams also fumbled, 21 to 16 in the final there.
04:35Indianapolis ends up winning.
04:37How about the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers
04:40with Justin Fields at quarterback?
04:43Again, Justin Herbert left this game late
04:46and Taylor Heineke came in and couldn't really do anything.
04:4920 to 10, the final.
04:51We'll see if this ankle sprain for Herbert
04:53lingers into next week.
04:55Harbaugh had said that he could go to Heineke
04:58and even Easton Stick in this game.
04:59He just went to Heineke and he had no luck whatsoever.
05:03Watt was in his face constantly.
05:04Meanwhile, the upset of the weekend without a doubt,
05:08well, you know, maybe Carolina was too.
05:10I gotta keep that in consideration,
05:11but probably Denver going to Tampa Bay and winning.
05:14No one expected that.
05:1526 to seven is the final.
05:18So finally, Sean Payton is on the board with a win.
05:21Bo Nix is on the board with a win.
05:2226 to seven, kind of shocking,
05:25but that's what the NFL has been
05:26through the first couple of weeks.
05:27And also Malik Willis starts again,
05:29maybe for the final time for the Green Bay Packers.
05:31And they go to Nashville and just destroy
05:33the Tennessee Titans, 30 to 14.
05:35Apparently Will Levis is still the starting quarterback
05:37for the Titans.
05:38Okay, fair enough.
05:39Meanwhile, the AP poll, let's take a look at this.
05:41In college football remains the same.
05:44And Boise State, by the way,
05:45is back in the top 25 for the first time in four years.
05:47Texas, number one, Georgia, number two,
05:50Ohio State, number three, and Alabama, number four.
05:53And yes, two plays four coming up this Saturday.
05:58The Tennessee Volunteers had no problem whatsoever.
06:01Their defense has been dominant
06:03throughout the college football season.
06:04Dominated again in Norman, Oklahoma, 25 to 15, the final.
06:09Look out for the Vols this season.
06:11They're playing great football
06:13under Josh Heupel and pick up, yes,
06:15an SEC victory on the road in Oklahoma.
06:19USC loses their first Big Ten game in Ann Arbor
06:22to Michigan, 27 to 24.
06:24Came right down to the final play of the game.
06:26Colorado squeaks out a win against Baylor,
06:2938 to 31 in overtime.
06:32Shoulder Sanders do a Hail Mary in that one
06:34for the win in Texas.
06:35In Arch Manning's for a start, 51 to three.
06:39Walkover win for the University of Texas.
06:42Two touchdowns, two interceptions in that one.
06:44Little bit of a surprise as we enter the homestretch
06:47for Major League Baseball.
06:48The postseason will be determined.
06:49Huge series coming up between the Mets and Braves this week.
06:53If the Mets win two out of three,
06:54they qualify for the 2024 postseason.
06:57The Reds were eliminated from postseason contention
06:59and also fired their manager yesterday.
07:01They just extended him at the end of last season.
07:04David Bell is out as Reds manager.
07:07409 and 456 was his record.
07:09But the reason, again, why this was surprising,
07:12he just signed a long-term extension.
07:13The Twins are now two games back of a playoff spot,
07:18or they lose two of three to the Red Sox this weekend,
07:20are now one game back of a playoff spot.
07:22The Red Hot Tigers continue to win.
07:24They take two of three in Baltimore.
07:26They hold the third wildcard spot,
07:28currently tied with the Kansas City Royals.
07:30And as I mentioned, the Atlanta Braves,
07:32they're trying to hang in there.
07:33They beat the Marlins yesterday,
07:34but this series against the Mets coming up this week
07:37is going to determine who gets that wildcard spot
07:41in the National League.
07:42In the WNBA, the playoffs are now currently underway.
07:45Let me give you what happened yesterday in the league.
07:48The Connecticut Sun blow out the Indiana Fever, 93 to 69.
07:52Kaitlyn Clark was four of 17 from the field.
07:55The Sun, six and a half point favorites.
07:57They cover fairly easily.
07:59The New York Liberty, they take out the Atlanta Dream,
08:0283 to 69.
08:04They cover the 13 and a half point spread by a half a point.
08:07New York is one of the favorites
08:08to win the WNBA championship.
08:10They are up 1-0 in the series
08:11and they play Tuesday night.
08:13The Las Vegas Aces beat the Storm, 98 to 67.
08:16So another cover there.
08:18And how about this high scoring affair?
08:20102 to 95, the Minnesota Lynx beat the Phoenix Mercury.
08:25The total went over by approximately 40 points in that one.
08:28Tons of WNBA playoff games coming up this week,
08:31including tomorrow night.
08:33Welcome back to News Bar here on Sports Grid.
08:35Each and every day, we have a guest contributor
08:36from Legal Sports Report.
08:37Last couple of years,
08:39whoever has been the contributor on our show,
08:40we've spent a lot of time talking about the legalization
08:43of sports betting going on across the country.
08:45It's been a really easy and topical discussion,
08:48but 2024 has definitely not been the case.
08:53We have not seen a ton of movement
08:56for the legalization of sports betting
08:57with these remaining states.
08:59But there is hope as we bring in Pat Evans
09:01from Legal Sports Report,
09:03that maybe, just maybe, Missouri is the big story for 2024.
09:08We're gonna find out in early November.
09:10Pat, welcome back to the show.
09:12Not a surprise that we're seeing
09:14these sports betting operators go all in on Missouri,
09:17because they got no one else to go all in on.
09:21I mean, you're right, you're right.
09:22The last couple of years,
09:23it was like a waterfall of states legalizing,
09:26and it just seemed like a natural thing
09:28to have four or five states coming online
09:31and sports books celebrating,
09:33and bettors rejoicing and being happy
09:35they can finally bet on their favorite teams.
09:37This year, it's been quiet.
09:39And it's kind of a slide from last year, too,
09:42because you had a couple,
09:44all the low-hanging fruit's gone,
09:45now we're going high in the tree.
09:48You got Georgia and Minnesota,
09:50those are states what we'll see,
09:52I don't know, maybe some action next year.
09:54Missouri, of course, we've had very close calls
09:57legislatively the last couple of years,
09:59a really strong bill backed by all the casinos
10:01and sports books and sports teams in Missouri
10:05that got through the House
10:06and then fell short in the Senate
10:08because of a senator who wanted
10:09to include video lottery terminals.
10:11Now we've got this huge ballot initiative
10:13led by the sports teams that have,
10:17they went out, got a ton of petition signatures,
10:19got it on the ballot, we've seen a lawsuit,
10:22now an opposition campaign that was funded by Caesars,
10:26$4 million to that campaign
10:28that's running in opposition of the ballot question.
10:31But big news last week is FanDuel and DraftKings
10:36poured another $10 million into the campaign
10:41that's for the ballot question.
10:43And they released their first ad,
10:45I think it was a week ago, week and a half ago,
10:48kind of touting what this tax money can do
10:50because the campaign's called
10:52Winning for Missouri Education.
10:54There's a huge budget shortage for education in Missouri
10:58and so they're thinking 10% of sports betting wagers
11:03revenue can go to education in Missouri,
11:06a new study just came out last week
11:07that says that's about $100 million
11:10over the next five years.
11:11So nothing to sneeze at for sure for education in Missouri,
11:14but together now DraftKings and FanDuel
11:16have contributed $21.5 million to this campaign.
11:20So they're very keen on getting this done,
11:23as you can imagine.
11:25What that means for the other casinos,
11:27there's only one skin per casino,
11:29which is a big reason why Caesars is probably opposing this.
11:34They don't like that there's two untethered licenses
11:36that would likely go to DraftKings and FanDuel.
11:38So they're just kind of coming into the market unchecked.
11:42So yeah, it's kind of an interesting battle
11:45we're gonna see in the next month and a half
11:47until election day and kind of the ads,
11:51maybe a little bit different than the presidential ads
11:53you're gonna be seeing in Missouri.
11:55And the reason I think they're pouring
11:57so much money into this is,
11:59the polls are still kind of split.
12:02I mean, you've got 50, 52% in the last two polls,
12:06four, then you've got 20% undecided.
12:09So that 20% is huge.
12:11I mean, it is a simple majority that they need.
12:13So 50.1%.
12:15So if the polls are right, they'll probably be okay.
12:18But as we all know, polls can be deceiving.
12:21So DraftKings and FanDuel are just spending money
12:23to make sure they get enough votes
12:26and that they get into Missouri.
12:28And again, we'll see a fun little fight here
12:32from some sports book operators in Missouri.
12:35Yeah, just to follow up on this real quick,
12:37did you say the tax rate for Missouri was 10%?
12:40I think I caught that.
12:42Okay, so that's their number.
12:43So a lower number than some of the others, right?
12:46Certainly lower than a lot of other states
12:48have come online in recent years.
12:50I mean, we've seen Illinois just bump up
12:52their rate from 10 to 20%.
12:55You know, of course, New York's got their 51%.
12:58So yeah, it is a fairly low tax rate comparatively.
13:01So, you know, we'll see what that means ultimately,
13:03but yeah, pretty low.
13:06Yeah, no, low as compared to others.
13:08And interesting to see FanDuel and DraftKings
13:10backing them so much.
13:11I think they're aware, wow, this is a good state for us.
13:13Low 10% number.
13:14Not making any money though, don't get it twisted.
13:17All right, so let's get to DraftKings here.
13:19Another story here about compliance reviews
13:22and my understanding from reading this story,
13:23by the way, you can read all about it
13:25at legalsportsreport.com.
13:26This is surrounding credit card usage and deposits.
13:30Tell us more.
13:31Yeah, so Massachusetts Gaming Commission, of course,
13:33as we've talked about, you know, whether it's me
13:36or Sam or Matt or whoever comes on here
13:39from Legal Sports Report,
13:40Massachusetts is by far the most active regulator.
13:43They have regular meetings.
13:45They're very lengthy.
13:46They're very in depth and detailed.
13:48And they set a hearing earlier this year
13:53to kind of go through some problems
13:54that DraftKings had last year.
13:56And then two, you know, a couple other instances
13:59happened earlier this year that they said,
14:01well, we gotta postpone this,
14:02do a little bit more investigating and pushed it back.
14:04This was last week that this hearing occurred.
14:07And it is because DraftKings had a little flaw
14:10in their system that they had promised
14:12when Massachusetts would go online, wouldn't be there.
14:15But what happened is through their universal wallet,
14:18they allowed some Massachusetts bettors
14:19to use credit card funds to place bets,
14:22which Massachusetts sports betting law does not allow
14:26for credit card funds to be used in sports betting.
14:29So that's basically what it was.
14:32We're in an investigation.
14:34There was no conclusion to the hearing.
14:35The gaming commission still wants more and more information
14:38to kind of determine, you know,
14:40what action if any is taken against DraftKings.
14:43It has fixed the issue as far as the commission can tell.
14:47Just a kind of an interesting situation here
14:50because, you know, a universal wallet is a universal wallet.
14:53A lot of people are excited about that
14:55because you can cross your borders and use it.
14:57But when there's a flaw in the system like that, you know,
15:01and it breaks a regulatory statute,
15:04it gets a little iffy for the commissioner.
15:06So just we'll see what happens.
15:08They questioned a lot of DraftKings employees last week
15:11to kind of determine how it happened and what went wrong.
15:15But again, no conclusion yet.
15:17I'm sure we'll be able to fill you in again soon
15:20to kind of figure out what happens there.
15:23Yeah, no, I think that all of the credit card deposits
15:27are something that are going to be monitored in the future.
15:28Minimums, maximums, things along those lines.
15:31All right, let's head over to Illinois as we close it out,
15:33Pat, and discuss some of these, again, compliance rules.
15:37The state, as you said, bumping up tax rates,
15:39also bumping up their protection for consumers
15:43in terms of making sure that the advertising
15:47is portrayed in the right way.
15:49I guess that's the best way I can put it.
15:51Yeah, to your point, Illinois has been pretty active
15:54in their tweaks of their sports betting industry.
15:57Of course, the tax rates,
15:58they had some interesting in-person registration requirements
16:01when they first opened, and now it's all mobile, of course.
16:04But yeah, now they're upping their advertising regulations.
16:07They really are limiting,
16:09they prohibit the use of free and free bet
16:12and free of risk wagering, the likes,
16:14which we've seen more and more states doing
16:16and the American Gaming Association
16:18putting in their code of advertising.
16:20So you're really seeing less and less and less,
16:23if any, of those kind of advertisements,
16:27offering free whatevers.
16:30They also are trying to cut down on anything
16:33kind of targeting college-aged or underage people.
16:38So nothing on college campuses or college media.
16:40So they said no sports book ads
16:42and say the campus newspaper, things like that.
16:45And yeah, that's something we've seen more and more
16:49over the last year.
16:50Remember, I think, what, two years ago,
16:51we had the Michigan State,
16:53my Spartans partnering with Caesars
16:55and Colorado partnering with PointsBet.
16:58And of course, those all kind of fell apart
17:00because of pushback in the industry and saying,
17:03these are iffy around these underage populations.
17:06And so more and more states just saying,
17:08let's get these advertising regulations in place,
17:11make sure everything's up
17:12and increasing our responsible gambling awareness
17:17and practices versus just kind of free for all.
17:22Fair enough, Pat.
17:23Is it true that you've read every single one of those books
17:25that are behind you, every single one?
17:27No, no, no, no, no.
17:28I've read about half of them
17:29and the other half of my wife's,
17:31so it's half and half.
17:33All right, so between the two,
17:34look how many books have been read
17:36by our guest contributors at SportsGrid.
17:37It's an incredible number.
17:39Pat, great to catch up.
17:40We'll talk again later in the week.
17:41Thanks again.
17:42Thanks, Craig.
