00:00Hi there. I am stuck underwater because my submarine engine needs more power. It uses
00:07addition power. I could really use your help to learn addition within 100 and it would
00:12help me get power back to the submarine. Can you help me? Thanks, let's get started.
00:23Today we are going to learn about adding with place value blocks. We have here a 10s block
00:31and some 1s blocks. The tall one on the left is called a 10s block. The small ones on the
00:37right are called 1s blocks. Can you tell me how many 1s blocks we have? We have 6 1s blocks.
00:45Great job! Now here is something really cool about this 10s block. We call it a 10s block
00:51because it is actually just 10 1s blocks stuck together. Let's stick them back together
00:58again. Having a 10s block is very helpful because when counting 10s blocks we can count
01:04by 10s which is much faster than counting every single block. Let me give you an example.
01:13If we want to count how many blocks we have it will go much faster by using our knowledge
01:17of 10s and 1s. We have 3 10s blocks so let's count by 10. 10, 20, 30. Now we can count
01:27the 1s blocks. We have 1, 2, 3, 4. 34 is how many we have. That was way faster by counting
01:36by 10s. These 10s blocks really do help us. Awesome! Here is the number 34 and the 3 is
01:43in what we call the 10s place. There are 3 10s blocks which represent the 3 in the
01:4910s place. The 4 is in the 1s place. We have 4 1s blocks to represent the 4 in the 1s place.
01:56This is place value. The 10s place holds groups of 10s and the 1s place holds 1s. If you still
02:03need a refresher on 10s and 1s I have another video you can watch called place value 10s
02:09and 1s. Now that we have that out of the way let's solve some problems to power up
02:15the submarine. We need to add these groups of blocks together to get the answer. We already
02:23know we have 34 blocks on the left. 3 10s blocks and 4 1s blocks. On the right we have
02:292 10s blocks which is 20 and 2 1s blocks. We have 22. Now let's solve the problem. We
02:38start by combining the 1s blocks. We count by 1s and get 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Now we count
02:49the 10s blocks. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50. The answer is 56. We have 56 blocks. Great job guys.
03:02Let's take a look at another problem. Here we have 2 sets of blocks we need to add together.
03:09We will start by combining the 1s blocks. How many 1s are there? We have 11 1s blocks.
03:19Great job. But wait a minute. If you watched the other video you know that we cannot have
03:252 digits in the 1s place. Once we have 10 1s we need to make a 10 out of it. Let's do
03:31that with the blocks. Now we have a 10s block to add with the other 10s blocks. Let's count
03:40how many 10s we have. We have 5 10s blocks or 50. How many 1s blocks are left to count?
03:50Just one. So the answer is 51. 25 plus 26 is 51. Great job guys. If you guys come across
03:59a problem with addition you can draw or use place value blocks to help you solve the problems.
04:05Looks like my submarine is fully charged. We will see you later. Goodbye.
