00:01:00The Treasury Department is your symbol of service and protection, and has been since
00:01:181789.
00:01:19Its responsibilities are great, and its duties far-reaching.
00:01:23Through its many subdivisions, it comes in direct and personal contact with every United
00:01:29States citizen.
00:01:31The Treasury Department maintains the oldest United States Naval service, the Coast Guard.
00:01:40It controls merchandise crossing our borders and prevents smuggling.
00:01:52It is responsible for the collection of internal revenue, enforces federal narcotic laws, suppresses
00:02:07counterfeiting, and finally, engraves and prints the money you use.
00:02:22The making of paper money requires the precise skill of individual artists and steel engravers.
00:02:27No one employee engraves a complete design.
00:02:34All the separate engravings are eventually combined to form one composite design from
00:02:38which is prepared the multiple plates used in the actual printing.
00:02:44Here still another specialist is involved, the printer, expertly polishing the plate
00:02:48with the palms of his hands so the clear, sharp images will result.
00:02:57The sheets of banknotes pass through trained fingers and under-practiced eyes as one complicated
00:03:02process after another sends them on their way to final completion.
00:03:07If a counterfeiter were to duplicate exactly a United States banknote, he would have to
00:03:12possess not only the combined skills of a great many artists, but all the elaborate
00:03:17equipment as well.
00:03:19For there is no question that each individual note made here represents the finest example
00:03:25of the engraver's art.
00:03:29Yet counterfeiters have been trying to duplicate U.S. currency from revolutionary days right
00:03:34on up.
00:03:35These are counterfeit notes picked up by the Secret Service during the past 85 years.
00:03:40Despite the fact that each can be detected as counterfeit by careful and alert citizens,
00:03:45thousands of people are needlessly victimized every year, mostly the general public, small
00:03:50merchants, neighborhood tradespeople.
00:03:53Well, Mrs. Flaherty, how's business?
00:03:58It's good at noon.
00:03:59We got a nice crowd.
00:04:00Our dinner trade's awful slow, though.
00:04:02It'll pick up.
00:04:03Of course it will.
00:04:04If I do say so myself, we set a fine table.
00:04:07You ought to come over sometime.
00:04:09I will.
00:04:10Next week, maybe.
00:04:11Excuse me.
00:04:12Fred.
00:04:14That's one of them, all right.
00:04:16Is something wrong?
00:04:17Mrs. Flaherty, do you remember where you got that bill?
00:04:18The 20th?
00:04:19Mm-hmm.
00:04:20It was around noon, the rush hour.
00:04:21I was very busy.
00:04:22It was a young, dark fellow with a mustache.
00:04:23It's good, isn't it?
00:04:24It's good counterfeit.
00:04:25Counterfeit?
00:04:26You should watch these things, especially in a bill of this size.
00:04:27I've got to turn this into the secret service.
00:04:28I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:29I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:30I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:31I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:32I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:33I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:34I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:35I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:36I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:37I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:38I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:39I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:40I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:41I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:42I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:43I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:44I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:45I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:46I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:47I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:48I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:49I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:50I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:51I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:52I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:53I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:54I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:55I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:56I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:57I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:58I'm afraid I can't.
00:04:59I'm afraid I can't.
00:05:00I'm afraid I can't.
00:05:02I'm afraid I can't.
00:05:07Mrs. Flaherty's bills were sent to
00:05:09the Secret Service Laboratory in Washington.
00:05:12Here, counterfeit bills are analyzed
00:05:14for distinctive characteristics.
00:05:16Mrs. Flaherty's bill, it turned out,
00:05:18has some very distinctive
00:05:20and rather familiar characteristics.
00:05:31Remember this note, Chief?
00:05:35Yes, the old Stuart note.
00:05:39Oh, no, don't tell me this has come out of retirement.
00:05:42Yeah, after three years. New crop, too.
00:05:44A million of these phonies floating around isn't exactly a happy idea, is it?
00:05:48It's fresh, all right. Almost perfect.
00:05:50Think Stuart would know about this?
00:05:52He might, but he didn't have the plates.
00:05:55We knew that when he took the rap.
00:05:58That case was a heartbreaker.
00:06:00It'd break your heart again if they fled the country with this stuff.
00:06:03Why don't you drop in on him? He might talk.
00:06:05His address is still Atlanta.
00:06:07Why not? We haven't any choice.
00:06:18Stuart hasn't got such a bad record here, has he?
00:06:20It's very good. Model prisoner.
00:06:22He's too sharp to make any small rolls.
00:06:25I'll talk to him now.
00:06:28Bring Stuart in.
00:06:30Yes, sir.
00:06:31You got another seven years to go?
00:06:34He'll be cut to four and a half with his good time off.
00:06:44That's all, guards.
00:06:46Yes, sir.
00:06:47Stuart, this is Mr. Raymond of the United States Secret Service.
00:06:51You don't seem very glad to see me.
00:06:54Sit down. Mr. Raymond wants to talk to you.
00:07:03Familiar?
00:07:05What'd I do with money in here?
00:07:07Look at it.
00:07:09Twenty dollar bill.
00:07:11A couple of bets at the ten dollar window. A tip to the cigarette girl.
00:07:14Ah, Stuart, don't snub an old friend.
00:07:18At the time of your arrest, you had $50,000 worth of those twenties old phony in your possession.
00:07:23I did?
00:07:24Just because you got caught, don't get sore at the money.
00:07:27Oh, I'm not sore.
00:07:28Okay, it so happens that we are.
00:07:30The bills are popping up again, mostly out west.
00:07:32Frisco, Reno, Vegas, and L.A.
00:07:34I'm amazed.
00:07:35I don't think so. Come again.
00:07:37You figure I've been floating them out the window.
00:07:39Don't kid with me. You know what I mean.
00:07:41Somebody's got those plates and is circulating the money.
00:07:44You might know who that somebody is.
00:07:46No, I don't get around much socially anymore.
00:07:48Stuart, you've got seven more years to go.
00:07:51A little cooperation might cut that down.
00:07:53Might even get you a recommendation for an early parole.
00:07:56Stool pigeons don't live long, Mr. Wright.
00:07:58I don't expect you to be a stool pigeon.
00:08:00I'm asking you to be loyal to yourself.
00:08:02To think of your own welfare.
00:08:04Your mob's in action again, but what are they doing for you?
00:08:07Nothing.
00:08:08What are you doing for them?
00:08:10Seven more years.
00:08:16Who's printing that counterfeit money?
00:08:18I didn't know then, and I don't know now.
00:08:19Who was your contact man?
00:08:21It was a guy named Joe.
00:08:24He always wore dark glasses and had his hat clamped low over his face.
00:08:28If he had a face, I never saw it.
00:08:30Gee, I guess I really couldn't tell you what he looked like.
00:08:33Is that all you have to tell me?
00:08:35That's all.
00:08:37Stuart, I guess I owe you an apology for interrupting your routine in the prison
00:08:40and dragging you into the warden's office.
00:08:42I misjudged you completely. You must really like it here.
00:08:45Like it well enough to consider it home sweet home for the next seven years.
00:08:49All right, warden.
00:08:51Think of the next seven years, Stuart, and try to refresh your memory.
00:08:55All right, guard.
00:09:01What do you think?
00:09:03I think he'll come around.
00:09:05Some weeks later, on a federal district court order,
00:09:08Chris Stuart was being transferred to Kansas City
00:09:11in the custody of a United States Deputy Marshal.
00:09:14Well, no arrest for the wicked.
00:09:17I'm doing all right.
00:09:22Do you mind raising your flipper?
00:09:26I'm going to have a look at it.
00:09:28All right.
00:09:31Do you mind raising your flipper?
00:09:36You're in central time now.
00:09:38Gained an hour.
00:09:40Yeah? I could sure use it.
00:10:00All right.
00:10:22All right. Unlock the jewelry.
00:10:31Get up. Get up.
00:10:49Pull her up and stop her.
00:10:52Go easy on those brakes.
00:11:01Shh.
00:11:14What are you waiting for? Open the door.
00:11:30The gun's empty.
00:11:34Hand it over.
00:11:36Come on. Give me.
00:11:37Afraid I'm going to hurt myself?
00:11:39You hurt anybody, they'll look sideways at you, Stuart.
00:11:42No, not this trip. I do what I'm told.
00:11:46Now, Marshal, let me see you put on a good act in that bus.
00:11:49I'll start cheering when you give us some money.
00:11:52I'll start cheering when you give us some money.
00:11:54I'll start cheering when you give us some money.
00:11:56I'll start cheering when you give us some money.
00:11:58I'll start cheering when you give us some results.
00:12:01In case you're wondering, I've got another gun here.
00:12:03Loaded.
00:12:05What's the matter? Don't you trust me?
00:12:09Calling SS-972.
00:12:11Calling SS-972. Over.
00:12:14This is SS-972.
00:12:16Go ahead.
00:12:18Agent Foreman reporting. We're on Highway 40. I've got the boy.
00:12:22Did everything go all right?
00:12:23Yeah, no trouble.
00:12:25Perfect cooperation.
00:12:27Good. Keep checking with us.
00:12:29Right, when we get to Kansas City.
00:12:33Well, how's it feel to be free?
00:12:35I'd like to complain.
00:12:36Why should you? You're getting a square shake.
00:12:38All we want are those plates.
00:12:40And your pals.
00:12:41Don't worry, I'll find them.
00:12:42Only give me a little time.
00:12:44The quicker you do it, the quicker you'll be considered for parole.
00:12:46We'll keep our end of the bargain.
00:12:48Listen, I'm pulling my end, too.
00:12:49Only keep out of my hair.
00:12:51I've got a lot of contacts to look up. Old leads.
00:12:53Not going to help any with you tagging along, you know.
00:12:55Sorry.
00:12:56Before we catch this bunch, you and I are going to stick so close together,
00:12:58when you scratch your back, you'll be scratching mine.
00:13:01Get used to it, Stuart.
00:13:13Long distance?
00:13:14Let's call to Chicago. Fred Simpson. Any answer yet?
00:13:18We'll keep checking up.
00:13:22Bill Branch is out. Call me back.
00:13:26They've called to Chicago. It's doing nice, too.
00:13:28Up we go. Keep checking.
00:13:30You're doing great.
00:13:31Yeah. Gum?
00:13:32No, thanks.
00:13:34By the way, whatever happened to your old girlfriend, Meg Dixon?
00:13:37Not a bad-looking thing.
00:13:39Let me see.
00:13:45Nosy bird, aren't you?
00:13:47Where is she now, Tris?
00:13:49She's not in Detroit. We checked there.
00:13:51Oh, no. There she got married.
00:13:52Last I heard, she was living in Newark, raising a family.
00:13:55You're lying, that's for sure.
00:13:57Okay, you tell me then.
00:13:59I wonder what's become of Meg.
00:14:01Sounds like a title to a song.
00:14:17You cut yourself?
00:14:18Yeah, the crummy glass.
00:14:19Bill tried to catch it.
00:14:20Let's see.
00:14:52Oh, God!
00:15:22Here.
00:15:28You're quite welcome.
00:15:47Laurie, some cigarettes, please.
00:15:50Hey, Laurie.
00:15:52Yes?
00:15:53I'll take the usual, Laurie.
00:15:55How are you doing?
00:15:56Not bad, Mr. Hackett.
00:15:58I don't have the right change for this ten.
00:16:00I'll have to give you a lot of singles.
00:16:01Keep it.
00:16:02I don't like a lot of singles.
00:16:04Too bulky.
00:16:06Weighs me down.
00:16:07You travel light, don't you, Mr. Hackett?
00:16:10Well, I travel.
00:16:11And I may be moving on if you don't show a little interest.
00:16:14Los Angeles is one town I can do without.
00:16:17Be careful.
00:16:18You're talking to a native daughter.
00:16:20I might report you.
00:16:21Okay, when you do, tell them I don't like their brand of hospitality.
00:16:25A guy can die of lonesomeness here.
00:16:28Try and hang on a while, won't you?
00:16:30You might change your mind.
00:16:37That's quite a guy.
00:16:38He must own a few dozen oil wells,
00:16:40or else he thinks cigarettes cost ten bucks a pack.
00:16:43If he told me he was lonesome, I'd encourage him.
00:16:45You mean if you were a girl?
00:16:46Well, sure, I'd...
00:16:57Hello.
00:16:58Well, hello.
00:16:59I thought your big night was over.
00:17:01I hope not.
00:17:03Not yet, anyway.
00:17:05I thought you might need a little protection.
00:17:08Yeah? From who?
00:17:10Oh, from lone wolves.
00:17:12Maybe a wolf pack, even.
00:17:14Oh, that's very nice of you, but who protects me from you?
00:17:17Hey!
00:17:19Look at me.
00:17:21Don't you see...
00:17:22character written in this face?
00:17:25Mmm, you are a sort of a character.
00:17:28But I prefer to go home alone, if you don't mind.
00:17:32Well, shall we say goodnight or wait until?
00:17:35Until what?
00:17:36Until a prowl car comes along and I yell at them.
00:17:40I'll go quietly.
00:17:41I'll go quietly.
00:17:42I don't want anything to disturb what's going to be a delightful relationship.
00:17:47You can hope.
00:17:48Just like anyone else.
00:17:50I get it.
00:18:05It's me, Tris.
00:18:06Oh, honey!
00:18:12Oh, I'm so worried.
00:18:14I read about your escape in the papers.
00:18:16I thought they'd find you.
00:18:21Who's that creep following you?
00:18:22Nobody, just a barnacle hanging around the club.
00:18:25But what happened?
00:18:26I'll tell you later.
00:18:27Where do you live?
00:18:28Not far.
00:18:31Come on.
00:18:35I'm out of a prayer.
00:18:37The feds stabbed me for a stool.
00:18:39The feds stabbed me for a stool, pigeon.
00:18:42They even sprung me, the dopes.
00:18:44And I sprung one of them.
00:18:46Imagine, Tris Stewart, playing ball with the cops.
00:18:51So all I got left now is some blind Ellie tips and an empty bag in their hands.
00:18:55No creep, sugar.
00:18:57What do you mean, no creep or no sugar?
00:19:00Confusing, eh?
00:19:03Oh, honey, I'm glad you're back.
00:19:06I like it.
00:19:10I like you, too.
00:19:13Tell me, anybody been prowling around?
00:19:16Cops, I mean, asking questions?
00:19:18No, nobody.
00:19:19Not since I moved out here and changed my name to Lori Frederick.
00:19:23That's good.
00:19:29We'll work fast.
00:19:31A strike, then Mexico for keeps.
00:19:34That sound good?
00:19:35Soon can we go, honey?
00:19:37Soon can we go, honey?
00:19:39First I gotta get in touch with my ex-partner, Sam Hooker.
00:19:43That dirty rat.
00:19:44Get him rich off my plates while I rot in a pen.
00:19:48I'll pay him a little surprise visit tomorrow morning.
00:19:52It won't take long to make a deal with him.
00:19:54And after that, baby, it's Mexico for you and me.
00:20:08Yes?
00:20:09Oh, Brill.
00:20:11Sure, go ahead.
00:20:14Just like that, huh?
00:20:16Tomorrow?
00:20:17Good work.
00:20:19All right, stay with it.
00:20:23Well, if they took the census tonight, we'd have one more bad citizen in our midst.
00:20:27Let me guess.
00:20:29It'd be my ex-roommate, Stewart?
00:20:31None other. Just blew in.
00:20:33He's with the Fredericks girl right now.
00:20:35I'd like to have ten minutes alone with that guy for the mauling he gave me in Kansas City.
00:20:39On the house, too.
00:20:41As they say, orders are orders.
00:20:44Yeah, but I'd still like ten minutes alone with him when the orders didn't read, pull my punches.
00:20:48Could've flattened him a dozen times.
00:20:50Sure you could.
00:20:51And you'd still be listening to him making phone calls.
00:20:54And we'd still be tracking down false leads.
00:20:57Except for your pride, it's better this way.
00:20:59Is this private?
00:21:00Not at all.
00:21:01Glad to see you, Downey.
00:21:03I want you to meet Fred Foreman.
00:21:04This is John Downey.
00:21:05Glad to know you.
00:21:06He's the one who let Stewart give him the slip in Kansas City.
00:21:09Good luck, Downey.
00:21:10When you see Stewart, give him ten bells from me, will you?
00:21:12I'm looking forward to it.
00:21:13I've got news for you.
00:21:15Stewart's in town.
00:21:17Oh.
00:21:18Where is he?
00:21:19Well, at the moment, he's with the girl.
00:21:22Oh, that's good.
00:21:23Well, I'd like to have ten minutes alone with him when the orders didn't read, pull my punches.
00:21:26Well, at the moment, he's with the girl.
00:21:29Oh.
00:21:30Well, don't look so unhappy.
00:21:31After all, it's his girl.
00:21:33I'm beginning to realize that.
00:21:35Cigarette?
00:21:36No, thanks.
00:21:37What's the matter? Won't you give me a tumble?
00:21:38Just for tips.
00:21:39Maybe I'm losing my touch.
00:21:41Maybe you never had it.
00:21:42Or else she's too smart for you.
00:21:44How about it?
00:21:45Oh, I don't think so.
00:21:46As far as she and everyone at the club's concerned, I'm just Johnny Hackett.
00:21:50A very shady character.
00:21:52If you'd rather look me up, I've been everything from a card shop to a confidence man with a record to prove it.
00:21:56I know Hackett's record.
00:21:58Every night he went home and robbed his own mother.
00:22:00Well, I haven't done that yet, but...
00:22:02Okay.
00:22:06Now, according to the report, Stewart starts moving in the morning.
00:22:10He's after the plates.
00:22:12Fine.
00:22:13And who has the plates?
00:22:15Ever hear of Sam Hooker?
00:22:17Uh-uh.
00:22:53Uh-uh.
00:23:19What do you want?
00:23:21You're welcome, I'd say.
00:23:25Do I have to blast my way in to see my old partner?
00:23:28What?
00:23:29Wake up.
00:23:30Open your eyes.
00:23:31Don't you remember me?
00:23:34Oh, I remember.
00:23:36It's you, Tris.
00:23:37I didn't recognize you right off the bat.
00:23:39It's been such a long time.
00:23:41Didn't you know I was out?
00:23:43No.
00:23:44No, Madonna.
00:23:46I haven't been feeling well, Tris.
00:23:48I don't get around much anymore.
00:23:49I stay pretty close to home.
00:23:51Oh, but now that you're back, what do you say you and me have a little drink, huh?
00:24:09Have a drink, Tris.
00:24:14This isn't exactly a social call.
00:24:18But you are glad to see me, aren't you, Tris?
00:24:20That all depends.
00:24:22On what?
00:24:23On how good a partner you've been to me.
00:24:26I've been doing time for the two of us, remember?
00:24:29I gave you a chance to grow a sweet bankroll for us.
00:24:31Where's my share?
00:24:35I lost it, Tris, but I can...
00:24:38Where's the plates?
00:24:41I'm a little drunk, Tris.
00:24:42Where are they?
00:24:45I sold them.
00:24:47I was as good as buried.
00:24:48No, no, no, Tris.
00:24:49I was going to stash them away, but things got awfully tough after they nailed you.
00:24:54And the place was hot, and I got scared, and I lost my nerve, and...
00:24:57And I sold them.
00:25:00Where's my cut?
00:25:02Lost it?
00:25:03Just like I lost mine.
00:25:04Lost all the dough and the ponies and cards and dice.
00:25:07My life's been awful bad.
00:25:09You don't know how bad.
00:25:11Who's got the plates?
00:25:12I don't know.
00:25:13I know!
00:25:15I don't know!
00:25:18Does his name come to you now, huh?
00:25:21Sylvester.
00:25:22Jack Sylvester.
00:25:24Sylvester, huh?
00:25:28He used to be one of our distributors.
00:25:31Where is he now?
00:25:34I don't know.
00:25:36If you hold back any more dope on me, I'm sick.
00:25:39He's in a Hollywood, the Grand Deli.
00:25:45Tris!
00:25:46Tris, don't!
00:25:47Don't!
00:25:48I can win it all back for you!
00:26:14Tris!
00:26:31Looking for someone?
00:26:32Jack Sylvester, huh?
00:26:34Business or personal?
00:26:36A little bit of both.
00:26:38Who wants to see him?
00:26:40Just tell him it's an old friend.
00:26:44What's he look like?
00:26:48Hello, Jack.
00:26:51It's okay, man.
00:26:55Aren't you glad to see me?
00:26:57Sure.
00:26:58Perfect.
00:27:00You should have phoned me.
00:27:01I could have met you someplace.
00:27:03I'm sorry.
00:27:04I'm sorry.
00:27:05I'm sorry.
00:27:06I'm sorry.
00:27:07I'm sorry.
00:27:08I'm sorry.
00:27:09I'm sorry.
00:27:10I'm sorry.
00:27:11I'm sorry.
00:27:12I'm sorry.
00:27:13I could have met you someplace.
00:27:15I don't like you coming here.
00:27:31Relax, Sylvester.
00:27:33I like it.
00:27:35Would I bring a load of trouble to an old friend?
00:27:38I came to L.A. because they're looking for me in Kansas City.
00:27:42That's 2,000 miles between me and a pinch.
00:27:45You could be wrong.
00:27:46Of course, I'm just telling you for your own good.
00:27:51Well, if you don't mind, Chris.
00:27:59I'd like to get into action again.
00:28:01Maybe you could help me.
00:28:03Maybe.
00:28:05I suppose you know that Sam clipped me for those plates.
00:28:08Too bad.
00:28:09Yeah, isn't it?
00:28:12Those plates.
00:28:14So what?
00:28:17So I'd like to buy a little merchandise.
00:28:22Listen, Chris.
00:28:24You're on your uppers and what you're talking about takes Rio Do to swing.
00:28:27I know that.
00:28:29I can raise it.
00:28:30It's got to be strictly cash and carry and nothing less than 25 Gs.
00:28:33I'll sell you a chunk for that, nothing less.
00:28:35Okay.
00:28:36I'll raise it 25.
00:28:38Oh, I'll need a little eatin' money.
00:28:43There's a pair.
00:28:47Okay.
00:28:48I'll be back with the 25 Gs.
00:28:50Cash on the line.
00:28:59That dame must eat, sleep and wash to rumba music.
00:29:02She sure loves her South American way.
00:29:05You'd think the record would break or wear out.
00:29:07Hey, what happened?
00:29:08Did you see Hooker?
00:29:09Yeah, I did.
00:29:10What happened?
00:29:11Did you see Hooker?
00:29:12Yeah, I saw him.
00:29:13He sold me out to Jack Sylvester.
00:29:16So I had a little talk with Sylvester.
00:29:17I think we got a deal cookin'.
00:29:19Honey, please don't take any chances.
00:29:21I've been worried all afternoon.
00:29:22It won't stop worrying.
00:29:23I know what I'm doing.
00:29:24Are you sure you weren't followed?
00:29:25Can you ever be sure?
00:29:26Anyway, I took out insurance just in case.
00:29:28Been changing from streetcars to cabs to buses on about five miles.
00:29:32I'm sure it worked.
00:29:33Get a cold beer in the house.
00:29:35Yeah, there's something I saw.
00:29:40Relax.
00:29:54You know they say Mexico's a wonderful place to relax.
00:29:58I read about it.
00:30:00Yeah.
00:30:01I'll tell you what else it's a wonderful place for.
00:30:03American money.
00:30:05Good old buck.
00:30:06Down there, they're starving for it.
00:30:09I could push a quarter million with a phony on them just like that.
00:30:13I'd settle for half of that.
00:30:15Half?
00:30:16More, maybe.
00:30:18The only trouble is I gotta have real dough to swing it.
00:30:21Everybody has that trouble, honey.
00:30:23It's the one thing in the world there's never enough of.
00:30:27You know what I need?
00:30:29I need a nice, friendly safe.
00:30:33Forget it.
00:30:34I don't think we should risk anything like that.
00:30:36Safes can be real trouble.
00:30:37Not if you know how to open them.
00:30:41Tell me, baby.
00:30:43What's the weekend take at that club of yours, huh?
00:30:46I don't know.
00:30:47Yes, you do.
00:30:48Come on, tell me.
00:30:49I don't know.
00:30:50How much?
00:30:51Tell me.
00:30:52Oh, $117,000 or $18,000, but honey, I'm afraid...
00:30:53To help?
00:30:54No, no.
00:30:55You love me, don't you?
00:30:56Oh, you know I do.
00:30:57Can you get away with it?
00:30:58Yeah, maybe with your help.
00:30:59With your help?
00:31:04If Stewart tries to pull off this job, he'll get killed or jailed.
00:31:07Not good.
00:31:09We'll just have to stop him or write off everything we've done so far.
00:31:14We just can't afford to let this man jam himself up.
00:31:17He won't if we work fast.
00:31:19This may be just what we need.
00:31:22Get me the Hollywood police station.
00:31:23Yes, sir.
00:31:29Am I tired?
00:31:30You sure were tonight, Sam.
00:31:31You can say that again.
00:31:32Good night, Laurie.
00:31:33See you tomorrow.
00:31:34Good night, Mr. Baker.
00:31:35Good night.
00:31:36Good night, Sam.
00:31:59You know what to do now, don't you?
00:32:11When you come out of the parking lot next to the club, I start driving towards you.
00:32:14That's right.
00:32:15Now, don't slip up.
00:32:16I'm terribly frightened.
00:32:17Stop it.
00:32:18There's no time for the jitters.
00:32:19All you have to do is start this car when you see me coming.
00:32:29Oh, may we better forget it.
00:32:38There's too many cops following around.
00:32:40Suppose something happens.
00:32:41Suppose you get hurt.
00:32:43If anybody gets hurt, it won't be me.
00:32:44Not as long as I got a gun.
00:32:45Just you remember to start this heat when you see me coming.
00:33:00Having trouble, lady?
00:33:05No, I just can't start my car.
00:33:07I guess the engine's cold.
00:33:12First lesson in driving is to turn on your ignition.
00:33:15Oh, yeah.
00:33:16What are you doing around here this time of the morning?
00:33:18Nothing.
00:33:19I just look over at the club and I'm on my way home.
00:33:21Who's your boyfriend?
00:33:22What boyfriend?
00:33:24The man that just got out of your car.
00:33:28Well, he didn't get out of my car.
00:33:30Pick him up.
00:33:34Stop!
00:33:48Well, Lori?
00:33:49Everything squared away?
00:33:50Yeah, Johnny.
00:33:51Thanks to you.
00:33:52Ah, forget it.
00:33:53I waited a long time for a date,
00:33:56but I didn't think I'd need a writ to swing it.
00:33:58How much do I owe you?
00:33:59Three hundred will take care of my end.
00:34:01Fair enough.
00:34:04Thanks.
00:34:05If there's any more trouble, I got 24-hour service.
00:34:07Bye.
00:34:08Goodbye.
00:34:24Well, Lori?
00:34:25That is that, to coin a phrase.
00:34:27You really came through for me, Johnny.
00:34:29Why not?
00:34:30I've been in these spots myself.
00:34:32I don't want to kid you, Johnny.
00:34:34Somebody's depending an awful lot on me.
00:34:36Yeah, well, he hasn't been much help to you.
00:34:39Why don't you ditch the guy?
00:34:41Because he needs me.
00:34:42And he needs a break.
00:34:44You gotcha.
00:34:45Puts him one up on me.
00:34:48I'd go all out, Lori,
00:34:50if it'd help you.
00:34:51That's swell of you.
00:34:53It's only you.
00:34:55I'm selfish about everything but money.
00:34:57And I just happen to have a little loose chain
00:34:59burning a hole in my pocket.
00:35:01That puts you in a class by yourself.
00:35:03But I'd rather not be by myself.
00:35:06More fun spending it when you got some help.
00:35:10How about it?
00:35:11Well, it's an interesting idea.
00:35:14Think it over.
00:35:16Always reach me at the Hotel Marguerite.
00:35:35It's okay. It's me, Tris.
00:35:37Are you all right?
00:35:38Yeah.
00:35:41What happened? I was worried.
00:35:43Nothing.
00:35:44Sorry I had to run out on you that way.
00:35:45But what could I do?
00:35:46Worked out fine though. You're out, aren't you?
00:35:48Sure, just like that.
00:35:49All it took was 300 bucks, a lawyer, and a good friend.
00:35:53Yeah? Who's your good friend?
00:35:54Johnny Hackett, the guy at the club.
00:35:56I thought you said he didn't mean anything to you.
00:35:58He doesn't, I tell you.
00:35:59Well, what's he after then?
00:36:00Nothing. He's not after anything.
00:36:02What's the matter with you?
00:36:03You ought to be glad I had a friend.
00:36:04Well, I'm not, see?
00:36:05I don't like the way this guy's moving in.
00:36:06You're crazy.
00:36:07Just because a guy happens to like me,
00:36:09you start getting ideas.
00:36:10I'd have been in a swell spot if he hadn't come through.
00:36:14All right.
00:36:17What's his pitch then?
00:36:18I think he's lying low.
00:36:19I know for sure he's loaded.
00:36:21He spends big, tips big.
00:36:22And talks big, don't they all?
00:36:27Think he's a record guy?
00:36:28You don't make that kind of dough selling bibles.
00:36:31You might be right.
00:36:32That's what I've been trying to tell you.
00:36:35What are you going to do?
00:36:36Look this guy up.
00:36:37He might be interested in a proposition.
00:36:38From me this time.
00:36:40Tris, honey, please let me handle it.
00:36:42You don't know him.
00:36:44It's time we met.
00:36:45Where does this guy hang out?
00:36:46Beside the club.
00:36:48It's the Marguerite Hotel.
00:36:49But please, honey, be careful.
00:36:52I'll see you later.
00:37:10Come on.
00:37:40Come on.
00:38:11What is this?
00:38:12What's the idea of making a play for my girl?
00:38:14I don't know what you're talking about.
00:38:16Laurie Frederick's the girl at the club.
00:38:18Get up.
00:38:22Next time you even take a look at her, I'll cool you for keeps.
00:38:25If you didn't have a gun on me, I'd beat your brains out.
00:38:28Cheap penny-ante drifter.
00:38:31I'll kill you.
00:38:32I'll kill you.
00:38:33I'll kill you.
00:38:34I'll kill you.
00:38:35I'll kill you.
00:38:36I'll kill you.
00:38:37I'll kill you.
00:38:38I'll kill you.
00:38:39You're a drifter.
00:38:41Oh, I see...
00:38:42So you're big-time, huh?
00:38:46I've been rummaging through your gear.
00:38:48By the looks of things, you're not too big.
00:38:51Cold cards, cold dice...
00:38:52I'd say there's quite a bit of room for improvement.
00:38:55I'm doing all right.
00:38:56Yeah?
00:38:57How would you like to do a little better?
00:39:01I don't like guns.
00:39:03I had something else in mind.
00:39:05Oh, keep it there.
00:39:06Too good to keep.
00:39:07How'd you like to fit yourself into a good deal?
00:39:12Sorry, I don't make deals with strangers.
00:39:15Particularly when their name is Tris Stewart.
00:39:18What difference does that make?
00:39:20I read about that break.
00:39:22You're pretty hot, you ought to be hiding out.
00:39:24Uh-uh.
00:39:25Not when there's a big jackpot ripe for taking.
00:39:28All I need is the right combination.
00:39:30You might be it.
00:39:32Listen, if you thought that, why did you open with a punch on my nose?
00:39:34Ah, because I was griped at you.
00:39:36But three will get you five, I can make you forget that when you hear my offer.
00:39:39Okay, make it, I'm listening.
00:39:42Okay.
00:39:43If I had 25 G's, I could stretch it to a quarter of a million.
00:39:46Don't interrupt.
00:39:47That quarter of a million's phony.
00:39:49But so good it would pass in a bank.
00:39:52And I already got the territory to operate in.
00:39:55That's one racket I know, brother.
00:39:57So does the government.
00:39:59Look who's talking.
00:40:00Of course they don't know about you and your racket.
00:40:04The way you at least make a strike.
00:40:06Besides, I take all the risks.
00:40:08Even so, I don't like tangling with counterfeit dough.
00:40:11Once you burn your fingers on that, it takes a long time to heal.
00:40:14Didn't I just say I'd do all the work?
00:40:16All you have to do is to rustle up the 25 G's, can you?
00:40:20Well, the bite doesn't worry me.
00:40:22It's just that it's out of my line.
00:40:25Let me think it over.
00:40:26Think hard.
00:40:27I'll know where to find you.
00:40:28Drop in later.
00:40:30If I want to punch something, punch the door first.
00:40:32I'll wake up just as quick.
00:40:34No hard feelings.
00:40:44Never heard of this guy, Johnny Hackett.
00:40:47Maybe you don't get around like you used to.
00:40:49This front business has got you hanging.
00:40:51Did you miss more dope on him?
00:40:52He and Bugsy McGill used to work the line together.
00:40:55The pleasure boats.
00:40:56They made three successful trips
00:40:58before the captain got wise to him and invited him to travel by rowboat.
00:41:01Then bring him in.
00:41:09Hackett, this is Sylvester.
00:41:10Say hello, boys, and let's get down to cases.
00:41:12Hello.
00:41:13By cases, he means money, Hackett.
00:41:16I understand you're ready.
00:41:17That depends.
00:41:19Mind if I see the attraction?
00:41:29Try that for size.
00:41:42The skin you love to touch.
00:41:44I have never yet seen it's equal, Hackett.
00:41:47I have.
00:41:49In any cash drawer, this is genuine.
00:41:51What are you trying to pull on me?
00:41:55He thinks it's from a coin.
00:41:57He thinks it's from a coin.
00:41:59How do you like that?
00:42:00I thought you said you knew what the quill looked like.
00:42:02Are you kidding, Hackett?
00:42:03No, it looks real.
00:42:04Let me see it again.
00:42:07Hackett, you're looking at the cream of the crop.
00:42:11That's a plenty fine job, but Uncle Sam didn't make it.
00:42:15Look at that border.
00:42:16Those sharp lines.
00:42:19This one's on the level.
00:42:21Sam.
00:42:23See the difference?
00:42:25Yes, I owe you an apology.
00:42:27Yeah, it's clear all right, but you have to look over close.
00:42:31Sorry I didn't tumble the first time.
00:42:33I had to be sure.
00:42:34Think nothing of it.
00:42:35I'd have done the same thing in your place.
00:42:38And I gather you're sold.
00:42:40Next problem is delivery.
00:42:42Any ideas, Tris?
00:42:44Hackett's got to draw this dough first.
00:42:46That'll have to be tomorrow.
00:42:47How about us making a meet someplace in town, huh?
00:42:49Sure, any time after the bank's open.
00:42:51Around noon.
00:42:53Noon's fine.
00:42:54Suppose we contact in Hollywood.
00:42:56Someplace along Fountain Avenue?
00:42:58All right, how about between Crescent Heights and Hayworth?
00:43:00On the north side of the street.
00:43:01Fine.
00:43:02Is that all right with you, Hackett?
00:43:03Whatever you say.
00:43:04It's a deal then.
00:43:05Noon tomorrow.
00:43:24Go ahead, John.
00:43:44The deal is on.
00:43:45Delivery will be made at 12 noon tomorrow.
00:43:48Stewart and I will park on Fountain Avenue
00:43:50between Crescent Heights and Hayworth,
00:43:52north side of the street.
00:43:53This looks like the real thing.
00:43:55We'll have the place staked out.
00:43:56Every man will be covered.
00:43:58But don't close in until you actually see my money
00:44:00pass into the receiver's hands.
00:44:02That'll be the signal.
00:44:04Right, Tony.
00:44:05When I see you hand over the money,
00:44:06that'll be my cue.
00:44:08My boys won't move until I tell them.
00:44:10Good luck.
00:44:23Now you all have your positions.
00:44:26I'll be in front of the grocery store.
00:44:29When I see our agent hand over the money,
00:44:32I'll take a beer case off a stack
00:44:34and set it on the sidewalk.
00:44:37That'll be your signal to close in.
00:44:41When it touches the sidewalk, not before.
00:44:45Now I want it understood that nobody
00:44:47makes a move until you get the signal.
00:44:49If you jump the gun, we can blow this whole case
00:44:52and maybe lose a man.
00:44:54So keep your eyes on me.
00:44:56Is that clear?
00:45:00All right.
00:45:01And have your standby cars ready.
00:45:03They may try a getaway.
00:45:05That's all, gentlemen.
00:45:07I said keep your eyes on me.
00:45:10All right, gentlemen.
00:45:11Now I want it understood that nobody
00:45:13makes a move until you get the signal.
00:45:15If you jump the gun, we can blow this whole case
00:45:17and maybe lose a man.
00:45:19That's all, gentlemen.
00:45:20Is that clear?
00:45:21Is that clear?

00:50:57This way please. Thank you.
00:51:05Johnny. Johnny Downey. How you been Johnny?
00:51:09I'm afraid you got the wrong party pal. Oh not a chance.
00:51:12Oh Betty. Betty come here. It's been a long time.
00:51:16I want you to meet the wife. Betty this is Johnny Downey.
00:51:20You're making a mistake. My name is Hackett. Hackett?
00:51:24Oh don't give me that. You're Johnny Downey. The guy's plastered.
00:51:28Leave him alone Bill. I'd appreciate it if you would. I'm expecting somebody.
00:51:32Oh. Oh I get it. Come on Betty the man's right. He's not Johnny.
00:51:39Sorry pal. I should have known.
00:51:48What was that all about? Now I'll tell you when we can see.
00:51:57He's a government agent. Government agent?
00:52:00Probably undercover. I hope I didn't tip his hand. You and your mysterious friend.
00:52:04Oh I tell you Betty I knew him when he was in the army. Military intelligence.
00:52:08Before that he was in secret service. Oh what a dope I am.
00:52:11Why don't you admit you got the brush. Waiter. Two scotch and sodas please.
00:52:15Yes ma'am. Secret service.
00:52:30Hey you're home early. That rat trap I rented gave me the creeps.
00:52:33Thought I'd come over and have her. Tris I left some packages out in the hall.
00:52:36Will you help me with them? Of course ma'am.
00:52:42What's up?
00:52:44I didn't want to talk in there. Tris Hackett's a cop.
00:52:47His real name's Downey. Secret service or something. Who told you that?
00:52:50Some customers. They were talking and they said he was an agent with the government.
00:52:53I thought the room might be wired. Alright. Let's find out.
00:52:56Don't be quiet.
00:53:26Who's there?
00:53:56It's all over. He knows about us and about everything.
00:54:05Yeah he knows too much. What are we going to do?
00:54:07Play along. Listen we're not dead yet. There's still that 25 G's.
00:54:10No I'm frightened. Let's get out while we can.
00:54:13We'll get out alright. Don't worry. But Hackett's going to pay our expenses.
00:54:16Now this is what you do. You stay here tonight.
00:54:19The first thing tomorrow morning buy us two tickets to Mexico City.
00:54:22Evening plane. Use the name Rodney.
00:54:24Rodney.
00:54:25Where are you going?
00:54:26I got a little business to attend to. I'll meet you at the airport restaurant.
00:54:29You got that name straight?
00:54:30Rodney, yeah.
00:54:31That's right. Now when you leave use the back door.
00:54:34Make sure that you're not tailed.
00:54:36Oh hello Stuart.
00:54:53What's up?
00:54:54Just heard from Sylvester. Said to meet him at one o'clock sharp.
00:54:59Where?
00:55:00In front of the hotel. Then he'd take us to the spot.
00:55:05Well I'm ready if he is. Got some coffee?
00:55:08No.
00:55:10You cut the dough?
00:55:13Not on me. I don't make a practice of lining my pockets with 25 G's in cash.
00:55:18After the last rehearsal I put it back on the board.
00:55:22Well you better get dressed. Then we'll go down and take it out.
00:55:52Got the money?
00:55:59Mm-hmm.
00:56:00You better go back to the hotel and wait for Sylvester.
00:56:03Let's just keep moving. Might be wiser.
00:56:06What's the matter? Anything wrong?
00:56:08Could be. Never can tell.
00:56:12You think we better call off the deal?
00:56:14I already called it off.
00:56:17You're kidding.
00:56:19How could you remind me of somebody?
00:56:21Like who?
00:56:22Like a secret service agent. I'll keep driving.
00:56:26Don't be a fool, Stuart. What do you want him up a good chance for?
00:56:29Chance for what? To play stoolie?
00:56:31After the deal, Stuart. That's why you're out.
00:56:33And that's why I'm staying out. On my own terms too.
00:56:36You had yourself quite a time, didn't you?
00:56:38Playing the hot shot gambler, tipping heavy for smokes, making a play for my gal.
00:56:42Why don't you think of your gal, Stuart? Give her a break.
00:56:44Why don't you shut up?
00:56:47Pretty lucky for me I found you out when I did.
00:56:50You know, you're the only link between me and your federal buddies.
00:56:54That's a link I'm going to have to cut.
00:56:57Just keep driving.
00:56:59I want to show you a beautiful view.
00:57:17Take the money out.
00:57:41Throw it in the back seat.
00:57:45Follow me out.
00:57:48Come on.
00:58:15Fuck him.
00:58:38Assault with intent to kill.
00:58:40I'll sign the complaint.
00:58:42Put him where he can't talk to anybody.
00:58:44Don't worry. If he wants to talk, he'll have to talk to himself.
00:58:50Oh, book him under another name.
00:58:54Just tell the newspaper boys he's a hitchhiker who tried to stick up.
00:59:00We don't want any publicity on this.
00:59:03How would the name of Briggs do?
00:59:04Oh, good as any.
00:59:06Agent in charge Gunby, please.
00:59:07My mother-in-law's name.
00:59:09I'd just like to see how it'd look on a police blotter.
00:59:13Mr. Gunby, this is Downey.
00:59:16Stewart was tipped off.
00:59:18I'll explain later how it happened, but I'm booking him at Venice Police Station.
00:59:22Well, there goes the case.
00:59:24Wait a minute.
00:59:25It's not dead yet.
00:59:26Why can't I go ahead without Stewart?
00:59:28That's pretty risky.
00:59:29Without him along, they'll be too suspicious.
00:59:32That's a chance I'll take.
00:59:33Stewart can't tip him now.
00:59:35My big worry's Laurie Fredericks.
00:59:37She could fix me good.
00:59:39Unless you pick her up before I contact Sylvester.
00:59:44All right, we'll do that for you.
00:59:46But it's your idea.
00:59:48Where do you meet Sylvester?
00:59:49At his office.
00:59:51That's it, then.
00:59:52We'll be right behind if you leave with him.
00:59:54Good luck.
00:59:55Thank you, sir.
01:00:04Curry speaking.
01:00:05This is Gunby.
01:00:07Is Laurie Fredericks in her apartment now?
01:00:09I think so.
01:00:10We're getting music from her room.
01:00:11Discontinue your present operation.
01:00:13Pick her up immediately and bring her to my office.
01:00:15Sir.
01:00:16Gunby says pick up the Fredericks girl right away.
01:00:24Looks like she's gone.
01:00:26Her clothes are gone, too.
01:00:27Well, we'd better make a report.
01:00:37Hang up quick.
01:00:38Time to win, Tony.
01:00:40You got a wild hair or something?
01:00:41What's up?
01:00:42They picked up Stewart.
01:00:45You there?
01:00:46No.
01:00:47Laurie saw it.
01:00:48Stewart was just leaving her place.
01:00:50Plainclothesman took him.
01:00:51She phoned me right away.
01:00:53When'd they take him?
01:00:54About an hour ago.
01:00:56Plainclothesman, eh?
01:00:58Picking up Stewart for prison escape.
01:01:00Yeah, and it could be Secret Service agents out there.
01:01:02I don't know.
01:01:03Picking up Stewart for prison escape.
01:01:05Yeah, and it could be Secret Service agents out on a counterfeit tip.
01:01:09How could they get a lead on us?
01:01:10How?
01:01:11How do they ever?
01:01:12All I know is Stewart's hotter than a firecracker
01:01:14and can explode us right into the clink with him.
01:01:16Stewart'll never talk.
01:01:17I don't trust anybody not to talk,
01:01:19not when the clamps are really on.
01:01:29I wouldn't answer that, Sylvester.
01:01:34They're probably getting set for a raid right now,
01:01:37trying to locate you.
01:01:45Look, Sylvester.
01:01:47I took a long chance to tip you off.
01:01:49We haven't got any time to waste.
01:01:50It's on your mind.
01:01:51I'm gonna lose myself for good.
01:01:53But first, let's go through with our deal.
01:01:55Where I'm going, I can peddle all kinds of queer without a question.
01:01:58Yeah, that's a good idea.
01:02:00Think I'll find myself a cave somewhere.
01:02:03I'm waiting for Mac to pick me up.
01:02:04You won't have to wait for him.
01:02:05My car's downstairs.
01:02:06Come on.
01:02:13But operator, a minute ago I got a busy signal.
01:02:33What's that?
01:03:04There's a car that's been with us a little too long.
01:03:07Take the next corner.
01:03:34Are you sure?
01:03:35Yes.
01:03:36Take the next corner easy and then step on it.
01:04:04You're behind us?
01:04:06I can't see him now.
01:04:07I thought he was gonna turn with us.
01:04:09You probably imagined it.
01:04:10I never did see any car.
01:04:12Maybe.
01:04:13Stop at the first handy bar you see.
01:04:15I thought we were going to the place.
01:04:16Later, tonight.
01:04:17Right now I need a drink.
01:04:19Okay.
01:04:33I'll get it.
01:04:58Hello.
01:04:59This is Jack.
01:05:00Now get this.
01:05:01Stuart's girl saw him get picked up.
01:05:02Hackett and I are on our way over to the plant.
01:05:04Get everything out of that office and check with me later.
01:05:06Right.
01:05:17I'm looking for Tris Stewart. Is he here?
01:05:19Who are you?
01:05:20I'm Stewart's girl. I thought maybe he might be here.
01:05:22Wait a minute.
01:05:23You say you're looking for Stewart?
01:05:24Yeah, I've got to find him right away.
01:05:26Something's wrong here. It don't add up.
01:05:28What do you mean?
01:05:29I don't know, but I better let the boss handle this. Come on.
01:05:32Can't you use a phone?
01:05:33Listen, sister, where we're going, they don't use phones.
01:05:36How far do we have to go?
01:05:37To the car barn.
01:05:42This is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
01:05:44Try the downtown area. We've covered this.
01:05:47Yes, sir.
01:05:48With the Federicks girl on the loose, Downey won't have a chance.
01:05:51Unless we can get to him before she does.
01:05:59Come on.
01:06:17Well, you're close to transportation.
01:06:19You can always take a trolley.
01:06:21When this is over, I'm taking a boat.
01:06:29All right.
01:07:00What's this all about?
01:07:01We changed our plans, Al.
01:07:02I thought you were going to deliver at the other place.
01:07:04And Al Stewart, we make the transfer now and blow it,
01:07:06which means closing shop everything.
01:07:07In here.
01:07:10Finish up, boys. We're moving.
01:07:11Pack everything in the truck and let's get out of here.
01:07:13I'll give you a hand.
01:07:24Same as the sample.
01:07:25Yeah.
01:07:26I guess so.
01:07:27All right.
01:07:28Let's have your money.
01:07:30Mind if I see the rest of the parcel?
01:07:33What's the matter?
01:07:34You afraid we'll shortchange it?
01:07:36Well, 25 grand, I'd like to be sure.
01:07:39No offense.
01:07:41Okay.
01:07:42Don't take all night about it.
01:07:45Come on.
01:07:46We'll walk from here.
01:07:47OK. Don't take all night about it.
01:08:08Come on, we'll walk from here.
01:08:18Fences up, doesn't it?
01:08:20So far, great. With these I could start my own private marshal plan in South America.
01:08:28Meet my family. Mama and Papa.
01:08:31Say, those are beautiful. Mind if I take a look?
01:08:35Not at all. Package, you're looking at masterpieces. I take great pride in these plates.
01:08:42Look at the scroll work, the meticulous care.
01:08:45Yeah, they're real works of art. Treasures, like paintings.
01:08:50I think so. But anyone can own prints of paintings. I happen to prefer the originals.
01:08:58They taste so identical in that respect. Would you happen to know who made these?
01:09:04No. No, I'm sorry. The artist neglected to sign his name.
01:09:10Yeah, I'm sorry too. I'd like to look him up someday. You want to sell these?
01:09:16Not a chance, Hackett. These are my old age pension.
01:09:20The only thing better than money are the plates that make it.
01:09:28Tell the boss to come out here. I've got to see him right away.
01:09:31OK.
01:09:40Max is outside with a girl. He wants to see her right away.
01:09:53What's this all about? Who's she?
01:09:55This is Tris Stewart's girl.
01:09:56What's the idea of bringing her here? You know better than that. But listen, boss...
01:09:59Wait a minute. I've got to find Tris. Is he here?
01:10:01What are you talking about? You know what happened to Stewart.
01:10:03But I don't know.
01:10:04Who are you kidding? You told Hackett you saw him get pinched.
01:10:06I didn't tell him anything. Don't you know Hackett's a cop? Ask Tris. He knows all about it.
01:10:10Hackett's a cop?
01:10:11Yes, he is. We even found a microphone in my apartment.
01:10:14You come with me. Get yourself lost.
01:10:17OK.
01:10:26There's a room for you.
01:10:29There's a friend of yours here, Johnny.
01:10:31Hackett, where's Tris?
01:10:34What about it?
01:10:35Get up.
01:10:37Harry, Frisky.
01:10:47Fifteen.
01:10:49Chrysler Convertible. Licensed California.

01:11:19OK.
01:11:24You're all washed up, copper.
01:11:25Just a minute, Sylvester. There was more than one car tailing us today.
01:11:29They're ready to move in now. You won't get as far as the stairs if you pull that trigger.
01:11:33I'm used to taking chances.
01:11:34Counterfeiting's one thing. Murder's another.
01:11:37Don't put a noose around your neck. They'll hang the whole lot of you, and that includes you, Laurie. You're part of it.
01:11:41I'm not part of anything.
01:11:43You're part of it whether you like it or not. You're in a bad spot, Laurie, and it's going to get worse.
01:11:47I only came here to find Tris. Where is he?
01:11:49I'll tell you. We locked him up because he didn't keep his part of the bargain.
01:11:52He tried to double-cross you and me both, Sylvester.
01:11:55Don't you see? You can't even trust your own pals.
01:12:04Looks like I can't trust anybody.
01:12:06You had to do it to get out of jail.
01:12:08That's right. The police are very powerful. They can make you do most anything.
01:12:11Like talk out of turn.
01:12:14Yes, you are a part of this, and you are in a spot, and I hate to see you getting in any deeper.
01:12:20You're in deep enough.
01:12:40Throw a cordon around the block.
01:12:41Yes, sir.
01:12:50Let's go.
01:13:21You try that area.
01:13:35You try that side, John.
01:13:42Over here.
01:13:45You two go with Agent Downey.
01:13:47You two stay with me.
01:13:50Let's go.
01:14:20Let's go.
01:14:50Let's go.
01:15:20Let's go.
01:15:50Let's go.
01:15:52Let's go.
01:16:18There he is.
01:16:22All right, Sylvester. Put up your hands.
01:16:26Don't shoot!
01:16:29Don't shoot!
01:16:30Sylvester, look out!
01:16:45Send for the coroner.
01:16:48That contraband inventory ready yet on last night's raid?
01:16:51Yes, sir.
01:16:52All right, bring it in.
01:16:54Have any trouble identifying the rest of the gang, John?
01:16:56Not a bit. Those are faces I'll never forget.
01:16:59I'll bet you won't.
01:17:00Put it down over here, Irving.
01:17:02Yes, sir.
01:17:03Here are the money and the plates, and this is the inventory.
01:17:06Fine.
01:17:09Sylvester was right.
01:17:11These are works of art.
01:17:13Two hundred and forty thousand and twenty dollar bills.
01:17:16Do you like counting it again?
01:17:18No, thanks.
01:17:19I did that last night.
01:17:21I know every one of those bills personally.
01:17:24Everything's in order. Send these to Washington.
01:17:26Yes, sir.
01:17:29Well, I guess that closes the Stewart case.
