00:01:45The word of our needs has preceded us,
00:01:47and so the camel train is arriving at our base camp.
00:01:51Our days were filled with protests of the patient beasts
00:01:54who seemed to sense the dangerous journey before them.
00:01:58At this time, I would like to express my appreciation
00:02:00to the one man whose patience, sympathy and understanding
00:02:04more than anyone else made our expedition possible.
00:02:08Ladies and gentlemen, Dr. Norman Wilkes,
00:02:10President of Southern University.
00:02:22The camel is, like most patient souls,
00:02:24more than a little stubborn,
00:02:26but it has developed into a contest of endurance
00:02:28between the beasts and the attendants.
00:02:42Too bad this young man is not a few years older.
00:02:44I'm sure he could have solved the whole problem.
00:02:56I'm sure he could have solved the whole problem.
00:03:01If you love these people, ladies and gentlemen,
00:03:03remember that at one time in history,
00:03:05at the Genghis Khan, they ruled the world.
00:03:10And that reminds me of another unsung hero,
00:03:13a man whose industry and devotion
00:03:15were responsible for the photographic records of our journey.
00:03:18Charlie Frazier, our cameraman.
00:03:22But at last, even the camels were subdued
00:03:24and we started on our trek.
00:03:28A journey that is to uncover the tomb of an emperor
00:03:30and bring to light one of Earth's great secrets.
00:03:39Followed days of monotonous sameness
00:03:42as we plodded onward into the desert.
00:03:45Broken only by occasional visits of our plane,
00:03:48which faithfully flew along our route,
00:03:50delivering mail, needed supplies,
00:03:52and bringing back our sick and injured.
00:03:54We had a signal arranged to tell them when we wanted to.
00:03:57You must realize that this is more than a travelogue.
00:04:00We have all the elements of drama,
00:04:02promised reward, obstacles to overcome,
00:04:04even a suggestion of romance,
00:04:06which explains the frequent trips of our airplane.
00:04:09My daughter Louise is with the caravan
00:04:12and Tommy Dean was piloting the plane.
00:04:15Our objective was a hitherto undiscovered country
00:04:17across the mountains.
00:04:19As we started to climb,
00:04:20the temperature dropped precipitately
00:04:22until we were in the snow country.
00:04:24As you can see by the way the camels are floundering,
00:04:26this was not the easiest part of our journey.
00:04:29But at last the summit was reached
00:04:31and we began descent toward our objectives.
00:04:35I promised you all an interesting surprise.
00:04:38Here it is.
00:04:39The discovery of the emperor's tomb,
00:04:41Here it is.
00:04:42The discovery of the emperor's tomb,
00:04:44whose whereabouts had remained a mystery for centuries.
00:04:49The shock of discovery was too much for sudden realization
00:04:52after the hardships of our journey.
00:04:55But gradually the enormity of our find possessed us.
00:04:58We called to each other in our excitement
00:05:01and rushed into the tomb.
00:05:03Back out of the way, boys.
00:05:05Back out of the way.
00:05:11Here it is.
00:05:12We found it.
00:05:13The tomb.
00:05:15My comrade.
00:05:16I ought to be photographing this.
00:05:31Come on, Tommy, we must find the crypt.
00:05:35Let's go.
00:06:05Let's go.
00:06:35Let's go.
00:07:05Let's go.
00:07:36Oh, excuse me, Mason.
00:07:37Oh, my fault, sir.
00:07:38Did you find anything?
00:07:39Yes, yes.
00:07:40The sarcophagus.
00:07:41In there.
00:07:42Louise, Tommy, Frazier.
00:07:44What is it, father?
00:07:45I found it.
00:07:46The sarcophagus.
00:07:47In where?
00:07:48In here.
00:07:49Come on.
00:07:50I'll show you.
00:07:51Our Chinese bearers had warned us of a curse on the tomb.
00:07:54I can't say as to that.
00:07:55I only know that our troubles began from that moment.
00:07:58A violent windstorm descended upon us, threatening our camp.
00:08:06We all worked hard to combat the elements,
00:08:08buoyed by the success of our expedition.
00:08:11Mason, our co-pilot, seemed very much moved.
00:08:15He started out to revisit the tomb,
00:08:18but he must have got lost in the treacherous storm.
00:08:20But by morning, he had not returned.
00:08:23The wind increased in violence.
00:08:28The searching party returned, without Mason.
00:08:31I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Mason,
00:08:34this gallant member of our party,
00:08:36who did so much to help achieve our success.
00:08:40Our Chinese bearers became fear-stricken as the storm grew worse.
00:08:47I was faced with a horrible decision.
00:08:50To wait and endanger the lives of our whole party, or press on.
00:08:55I decided on the latter course.
00:09:02It was only when I began the difficult task of translating the scroll
00:09:06that I really found out the magnitude of our discovery.
00:09:12The more I studied its contents,
00:09:18the more I understood its meaning.
00:09:21I was convinced that the scroll was a gift from God.
00:09:25I was convinced that the scroll was a gift from God.
00:09:29The more I...
00:09:32...realized that I...
00:09:37...that I...
00:09:45Turn on the lights.
00:09:52What happened? Did he faint?
00:09:54Looks like it.
00:09:58I don't know.
00:10:13What's wrong, Louise?
00:10:14I don't know, Jimmy. Something's happened to Father.
00:10:28I'm sorry you didn't hear and see what there was at the lecture, Jimmy.
00:10:31Father would be disappointed.
00:10:33My only excuse is that I misunderstood the time.
00:10:36Perhaps we can run the pictures again.
00:10:38I hope so. Jimmy was one of Dad's favorite pupils.
00:10:41I never could get much interested in archaeology.
00:10:43But you can fly a plane.
00:10:45And, after all, there are many reasons for wanting to go on an archaeological trip to China.
00:10:50Here's the complete camera report.
00:10:52I've arranged to store the film at...
00:10:54Are you listening to me?
00:10:56Yes, yes, of course. Thank you.
00:10:59I wish they'd hurry.
00:11:01The doctor's been up there a long time.
00:11:03No, don't worry. Your dad's been under a strain.
00:11:06The work and study preparing for the lecture's been too much for him.
00:11:13Miss Louise?
00:11:14Yes, Jonas?
00:11:15You are wanted upstairs.
00:11:16Of course. Excuse me.
00:11:27The police.
00:11:28Police?
00:11:48Police.
00:11:49This way, sir.
00:11:50See that nobody leaves here, Grady.
00:11:57What's all the excitement about?
00:11:59I don't know, but it must be serious.
00:12:01That was Captain Street of the homicide squad.
00:12:03Homicide?
00:12:04Yes.
00:12:05That means a Dr. Benton?
00:12:06I'm afraid so.
00:12:15You can't keep murder out of the newspapers.
00:12:17We have no proof that he was murdered.
00:12:19Your own doctor says he was poisoned.
00:12:21You told me he was stricken during the lecture.
00:12:23Doesn't look like suicide to me.
00:12:26What I want to know is who had the brilliant idea of removing a body?
00:12:29I did.
00:12:30It wasn't a body.
00:12:32It was my very dear friend, Dr. Benton.
00:12:34We all supposed that he'd collapsed from overwork.
00:12:37It would have been inhuman to have left him on the floor.
00:12:39Yeah, but it might have helped me a little.
00:12:41I'm supposed to photograph a body at the scene of the crime.
00:12:43I got work to do, prints, clues, routine to go through.
00:12:46Perhaps this wasn't a routine crime.
00:12:49Who are you?
00:12:50My name is Wong, James Lee Wong.
00:12:52How do you fit into this?
00:12:53Dr. Benton had just returned from the interior of China.
00:12:56I'm Chinese.
00:12:57Are you Chinese too?
00:12:58Yes, sir.
00:12:59Two of you work together?
00:13:00I never saw her until an hour ago.
00:13:04You sent it for me, sir?
00:13:06Oh, yeah.
00:13:07What did Dr. Benton have for lunch?
00:13:14That's fine.
00:13:15Everybody else had the same thing?
00:13:17Everybody, except Miss Winland.
00:13:20What did she have?
00:13:21What'd she have?
00:13:22Chop suey?
00:13:23No, sir.
00:13:24She had a cup of coffee and a piece of apple pie.
00:13:27She has had the same lunch every day for a month.
00:13:30You mean she eats here all the time?
00:13:32She lives here.
00:13:33Winland is, or I should say was, Dr. Benton's secretary.
00:13:37Ah.
00:13:38All right, all right, all right.
00:13:39What did the rest of you do?
00:13:40I was airplane pilot on the expedition.
00:13:42And I was the cameraman.
00:13:44I ran the projection machine at the lecture.
00:13:47What's your record?
00:13:48Research.
00:13:49Research.
00:13:52Who else was with him at the lecture?
00:13:54The doctor's daughter, whom you met upstairs,
00:13:56the trustees of the university, and a few friends.
00:13:58Who was with him when he died?
00:14:00Jonas and I.
00:14:01Did he say anything?
00:14:02Research.
00:14:03Oh, as a matter of fact, he did.
00:14:05Of course, I didn't mention it before
00:14:07because it didn't make sense.
00:14:09Come on, what'd he say?
00:14:10Well, we could hardly hear him.
00:14:12It was something about eternal fire
00:14:14and that Winland will...
00:14:16What do you know about this?
00:14:17Why, nothing at all.
00:14:18I have no idea what the doctor meant.
00:14:20When Dr. Benton phoned me,
00:14:21he hinted at something important he had found.
00:14:24There was the scroll.
00:14:25Did you help him translate it?
00:14:26No, Dr. Benton wouldn't let anyone see it.
00:14:28Oh, wait a minute, wait a minute.
00:14:29Scroll, eternal fire, translate.
00:14:31What is all this?
00:14:32Well, the doctor was telling us
00:14:33about finding an ancient scroll
00:14:34in the tomb of the Ming emperor.
00:14:36Where is it now?
00:14:37In the safe.
00:14:38Who has the combination?
00:14:39Dr. Benton and Dr. Wilkes.
00:14:41Of course.
00:14:42Being president of the college,
00:14:43I have the combinations of every safe on the campus.
00:14:45Well, come on, come on, let's open it.
00:14:47All right.
00:15:00Why, there's nothing in there.
00:15:01The scroll's gone?
00:15:02Yes.
00:15:03Yeah, and so is my patience.
00:15:04Now listen, I'm sick of scrolls,
00:15:06translations, eternal fires.
00:15:07I'm gonna have just a slight dash of murder mystery.
00:15:11Police headquarters.
00:15:16Homicide.
00:15:18Hello, this is Street speaking.
00:15:19I want you to send some men up to room number four,
00:15:21lecture room number four at the Southern University.
00:15:24That's right, Doc Benton's place.
00:15:26Yeah.
00:15:27You know, prints, photographs, the works.
00:15:30Yeah.
00:15:32Chinese exchange, please.
00:15:35Chinese exchange?
00:15:37Wo Long Tan.
00:15:39Wo Long Tan?
00:15:40Chinese exchange, please.
00:15:43Chinese exchange?
00:15:45Wo Long Tan.
00:15:47Wo Long Tan?
00:15:59Yes?
00:16:05Torino.
00:16:06Yeah?
00:16:07Torino.
00:16:08Yeah?
00:16:09That was Jonas.
00:16:10He says there's a Chinese named Wong sticking his nose in.
00:16:13Jonas must have been scared.
00:16:14The house is full of cops and he takes a chance on phoning us.
00:16:17Well, I only hope our Jonas doesn't turn out to be our Jonah.
00:16:20Yeah, certain people would give a lot to know
00:16:22that you didn't die in that Chinese desert.
00:16:25Wong, eh?
00:16:28I wonder who he's working for.
00:16:30Well, you figure that out.
00:16:38Good evening, fool.
00:16:39Late again, huh?
00:16:40You late.
00:16:41Me no late.
00:16:42You always late.

00:17:18My name not Fooey.
00:17:20Name Foo.
00:17:22Well, it may be Foo in China.
00:17:24But in America, it's Fooey.
00:17:26Heh.
00:17:27How Dr. Benton kill?
00:17:29Poison.
00:17:31What kind poison?
00:17:32Nobody knows until the police surgeon
00:17:34performs an autopsy.
00:17:36Sure.
00:17:38Maybe Dr. Benton have bad cook.
00:17:50What's the matter?
00:17:51You play games?
00:17:52No.
00:17:53There's something wrong with these pictures.
00:17:55Nothing wrong with soup.
00:17:56You eat them.
00:17:58Fooey.
00:17:59That's it.
00:18:00I've got it.

00:18:02I've got what's wrong with the pictures.
00:18:04The water picture.
00:18:05Look.
00:18:06See this picture?
00:18:07Dr. Benton as he started the lecture?
00:18:09See the water picture on the table?
00:18:11See this picture of the lecture room
00:18:12after Dr. Benton's collapse?
00:18:14Where's the water picture?
00:18:15Not this one.
00:18:16We have it 25 years.
00:18:17You ought to blame him.
00:18:18Why didn't I think of that before?
00:18:23Everybody crazy.

00:19:36Chinese temples.
00:19:37A missing scroll.
00:19:39An eternal fire.
00:19:40What a case.
00:19:45Hello?
00:19:47Yeah, doc.
00:19:49Yeah, okay, thanks.
00:19:51And now some kind of an alkyloidal poisonous...
00:19:53Nobody knows anything about.
00:19:55Hey, Grady, come here.
00:20:08What do you think that is?
00:20:10Maybe it's the eternal fire.
00:20:20Can't you two find any other place to neck?
00:20:22He's hurt.
00:20:23Hurt?
00:20:24I'll say he is.
00:20:25Out like a red lantern.
00:20:26Wong!
00:20:27Wong, snap out of it, old boy.
00:20:29What happened?
00:20:30Oh, I was searching the grounds and something hit me.
00:20:33Did you see who hit you?
00:20:34No.
00:20:35What were you looking for?
00:20:37This.
00:20:49I don't know how you're mixed up in all of this, but maybe you got something.
00:20:53You figure the poison was in the drinking water all the time, right?
00:20:56Right.
00:20:57And in the excitement following Dr. Benton's collapse,
00:21:00the murderer threw the water pitcher and glass out the window.
00:21:03The window was open during the lecture.
00:21:04How do you know?
00:21:05I opened it.
00:21:06Dr. Benton asked me to.
00:21:08Whoever hit you on the head was probably looking for pieces of this, huh?
00:21:11Yes.
00:21:12He probably found the pitcher.
00:21:14Being heavy, it didn't break.
00:21:15Luckily, I held that piece of the glass in my hand.
00:21:17Luckily for you, it didn't cut your hand off.
00:21:20Yeah.
00:21:21You sure you didn't hear or see anyone?
00:21:24Not exactly.
00:21:25I did see what appeared to be a flashlight in the shrubbery.
00:21:29Now it's your turn.
00:21:31I, too, saw light in the shrubbery.
00:21:33I hurried over and found Mr. Wong lying on the ground.
00:21:35I was doing my best to revive him when you arrived.
00:21:38Sure you didn't hit him on the head in the first place?
00:21:40Positive.
00:21:41But I did hear someone running away.
00:21:43Oh.
00:21:45A mysterious character shrouded in darkness.
00:21:47What were you doing snooping around the grounds?
00:21:50I wasn't snooping.
00:21:51I was on my way here.
00:21:53You asked me to come.
00:21:54Oh, yeah, yeah.
00:21:55That's right.
00:21:56I did.
00:21:57In the habit of carrying a flashlight?
00:21:58Why, no.
00:22:00No.
00:22:01Of course not.
00:22:02It's too simply simple.
00:22:03How do we even know that's the glass Doc Benton drank out of?
00:22:05We don't.
00:22:06But a simple laboratory test.
00:22:07Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:22:08I know all about that.
00:22:09All right, you two.
00:22:10Run along.
00:22:11Thank you, Captain.
00:22:12Coming?
00:22:16Grady.
00:22:17Take that down to the laboratory and have it tested for poison.
00:22:19Yeah.
00:22:20Where will you be?
00:22:21I'll check with you later at the station.
00:22:22Feed it.
00:22:23Yes, sir.
00:22:30Can I take you somewhere?
00:22:32No, thanks.
00:22:33I'm due at Dr. Benton's.
00:22:35Well, that's good.
00:22:36You'll have no trouble reaching there.
00:22:38However, if you're not going to Dr. Benton's, be careful.
00:22:40You're going to be followed.
00:22:46Are you sure I'm going to be followed?
00:22:48We're going to be followed.
00:22:49Is that better?
00:22:50Much.
00:23:16Feel like talking?
00:23:18Of course.
00:23:19What shall we talk about?
00:23:21Scrolls.
00:23:22Ancient ones from Chinese temples.
00:23:26What was on it?
00:23:28I don't know.
00:23:29Usually, these scrolls are merely a detailed survey of all the emperor's possessions.
00:23:34Dr. Benton hinted of something important.
00:23:36Did he tell you what it was?
00:23:38No.
00:23:39He said the lecture was the time and place to reveal it.
00:23:42Then his discovery may have been the reason for the murder and the theft.
00:23:46I don't know.
00:23:47Merely as a museum piece, the scroll was very valuable.
00:23:50Granted.
00:23:51But why couldn't it have indicated the location of some hidden treasure?
00:23:55Mr. Wong, I believe you've been reading too many detective stories.
00:24:08He's following, all right.
00:24:10I've got to get away.
00:24:12Will you help me?
00:24:13That depends.
00:24:15I'm not running out, but there's something I must do.
00:24:18I can't explain.
00:24:20You've got to trust me.
00:24:26Hang on.
00:24:34Hang on.
00:24:46Hang on.
00:25:06All right, where's the girl?
00:25:26The girl?
00:25:27Yeah, you know.
00:25:28You left the lecture hall with her.
00:25:29Wen Lin.
00:25:30Why, Captain, have you been following me?
00:25:31Now cut out the clowning.
00:25:32Where is she?
00:25:35She must have disappeared.
00:25:36All right, wise guy.
00:25:37I got the number of that cab and I'm going to have her picked up.
00:25:53Police headquarters.
00:25:56Hello, give me Homicide.
00:26:00This is Street speaking.
00:26:02I'm calling out an order to have a taxi cab picked up.
00:26:05Number 5U7511.
00:26:09Yeah, that Chinese girl got away.
00:26:10Wen Lin.
00:26:11I want her picked up.
00:26:13Who?
00:26:14Put him on.
00:26:17Hello, Grady.
00:26:18Yeah?
00:26:21Yeah?
00:26:23Thanks.
00:26:24Okay, say listen.
00:26:27Hold the phone a minute.
00:26:41Now get this.
00:26:42I'm with this Wong fellow.
00:26:44His address is on Grant Avenue.
00:26:46I want you to check it.
00:26:48Send a good man up there to go over his place with a fine-tooth comb.
00:26:51Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:26:52I'll keep him busy for an hour.
00:26:54Okay.
00:27:02Well, you were right.
00:27:03They found poison on that glass.
00:27:05Corresponds with the poison in Doc Bennett's stomach.
00:27:07Sure must have been potent.
00:27:09Probably an oriental vegetable poison.
00:27:11Wen Lin would know about that, wouldn't she?
00:27:13Yes.
00:27:14Or any of the other members of the expedition.
00:27:16They were all in China.
00:27:17Yeah, yeah.
00:27:19You better take a little ride with me.
00:27:20Are you taking me in?
00:27:21Why?
00:27:22What have you been doing?
00:27:23Nothing that you don't know about.
00:27:25No.
00:27:26No, as a matter of fact, I want a little help.
00:27:28I'll have one of my boys pick your car up.
00:27:29Come on.
00:27:30How much?
00:27:31Two dollars even, sir.
00:27:32Thank you very much.
00:27:44You know, I'm pretty much of a down-to-earth cop.
00:27:46Chinese temples, eternal fires, manuscripts.
00:27:50A little out of my line.
00:27:52Chinese.
00:27:53What do you think of it?
00:27:54My countrymen dress ordinary things in fanciful language.
00:27:57Eternal fire may be something down-to-earth.
00:28:00May be.
00:28:01Let's see.
00:28:02There's Wen Lin, and then there's Louise Benton,
00:28:05although I don't think she poisoned her own father.
00:28:08Then there's that Tommy, what's-his-name, the aviator.
00:28:11Frazier, the cameraman.
00:28:13I think you and I better get a complete list of that expedition, don't you?
00:28:16It would help.
00:28:17Also a list of the people at the lecture.
00:28:19Whoever poisoned the water was at the lecture.
00:28:21He couldn't very well take a chance on that water being tasted by someone else.
00:28:25He or she, you mean.
00:28:26I'm not forgetting Wen Lin.
00:28:28Whoever did it sneaked up there in the dark during the lecture and put the poison in the water.
00:28:32Possibly.
00:28:33Though you'd think Wen Lin would have seen that.
00:28:35She was facing away from the screen.
00:28:37It's more likely that...
00:28:38It's more likely that Wen Lin fixed the whole thing.
00:28:41Except for one thing.
00:28:42What's that?
00:28:44Well, in all the murder mysteries I've read and seen,
00:28:46the person they throw all the suspicion on is never the murderer.
00:28:50Maybe this is one time they'll cross up the formula.
00:28:53Oh, that's too much to hope for.
00:28:55By the way, where's the film that they ran this afternoon?
00:28:58Frazier, that cameraman has it.
00:29:01Why?
00:29:02Everybody has one advantage on us.
00:29:04They've heard the lecture and seen the pictures.
00:29:06Why don't we take a look?
00:29:07If nothing else happens, at least we'll be even with the rest of them.
00:29:10That's a good idea. I got an hour to spare.
00:29:12Might as well spend it at the movies.
00:29:16Hello?
00:29:18Yes, speaking.
00:29:21Where?
00:29:22The Green Dragon.
00:29:23Who is this?
00:29:26Hello?
00:29:27Hello?
00:29:29Hello?
00:29:30Yes, speaking.
00:29:33Where?
00:29:34The Green Dragon.
00:29:35Who is this?
00:29:38Hello?
00:29:39Hello?
00:29:58THE GREEN DRAGON
00:30:28THE GREEN DRAGON
00:30:58THE GREEN DRAGON
00:31:28THE GREEN DRAGON
00:31:45Doesn't look like anybody's home.
00:31:47No.
00:31:59Hey, look in there.
00:32:01Hit that light.
00:32:06Frazier.
00:32:07Oh, hello.
00:32:10Here, take this.
00:32:17What happened?
00:32:18Well, I...
00:32:20I got a phone call asking me to meet Wynn Lyn at the Green Dragon.
00:32:26Started out.
00:32:28Got suspicious.
00:32:30Turned around, came home.
00:32:32And the roof fell in on me.
00:32:34Was it Wynn Lyn on the phone?
00:32:36I thought it was.
00:32:41Have a drink?
00:32:42No, thanks.
00:32:43Didn't you see anyone when you came in?
00:32:45No, it was dark.
00:32:52Somebody's searching the place.
00:32:53They must have heard us coming.
00:32:55Got any idea what they were looking for?
00:32:57No, there's nothing worth taking except...
00:33:06Well, thanks to you fellas, they didn't have time to do much damage in here.
00:33:10Where's the film of the expedition?
00:33:12Oh, I have it right here on this machine.
00:33:14I've been working on it.
00:33:16Well, that's what we came to see.
00:33:17My projection machine is still at the university.
00:33:20However, I can run it through this movie-ola for you.
00:33:23We use this for cutting.
00:33:24Stop and start as you please.
00:33:26That's fine, if you don't mind.
00:33:27Oh, not at all.
00:33:37You cut this film yourself?
00:33:39Oh, sure. It's a one-man job.
00:33:45You photographed the interior of the tomb?
00:33:47Why, yes.
00:33:49There it is.
00:33:54It's the tomb.
00:34:04Where's the scene of Dr. Benton finding the scroll?
00:34:07Well, I never got that.
00:34:09In fact, I didn't know anything about the scroll until today at the lecture.
00:34:12We were all kind of excited, and when Dr. Benton yelled that he had found the sarcophagus,
00:34:16I left the camera and ran with the others.
00:34:19And you and the others didn't see anything?
00:34:23No.
00:34:34So you gave me the duck, put in a phony call to Frazier, and then broke into his house.
00:34:38That isn't true. I never telephoned.
00:34:40Then what are you doing here?
00:34:43I called for some enlargements that Dr. Wilkes wanted.
00:34:46When I arrived, the door was open.
00:34:49There was someone sitting at the desk.
00:34:51When I came in, he turned around with a gun in his hand.
00:34:53Yeah. Tied you up and put you in the closet.
00:34:56Why don't you tell us what happened?
00:34:58You were searching the place, Frazier caught you, and you conked him.
00:35:00Then tied herself up and put herself in the closet?
00:35:03Well, Frazier didn't tie her up and put her in the closet and then knock himself out, did you?
00:35:08Where is he? Hey, Frazier!
00:35:14What are you doing here?
00:35:16I thought I heard somebody outside.
00:35:18Yeah, I know. The mysterious stranger again, eh?
00:35:21Police headquarters.
00:35:29Homicide.
00:35:34Hello, this is Street speaking. Send a crew up to Frazier's house.
00:35:37Photographs, fingerprints.
00:35:39Footprints, too. There may be a mysterious stranger at that.
00:35:42That's all. Come on.
00:35:44There was somebody. Listen.
00:36:44I think we can make it.
00:37:15I got the license number, but it's probably a stolen car.
00:37:18Yeah, we better get out of here before somebody calls a cop.
00:37:23Well, it looks like we got the murderer right where he wants us.
00:37:26Haven't accomplished much, have we?
00:37:28No, we sure haven't.
00:37:30We were doing all right until Wynn Lynn gave you the slip.
00:37:33She kind of put one over on you, didn't she?
00:37:35Yeah, looks like it.
00:37:37Yeah, it's quite a story she told.
00:37:39I wonder what her angle is.
00:37:41I don't know.
00:37:43But come on up to my apartment and I'll try to find out.
00:37:46It's too late to find out anything tonight.
00:37:48Come on up anyway. I'll make you a cup of tea.
00:37:51What have I got to lose?
00:38:03What's the matter, fool?
00:38:07Wait a minute. Calm down. Speak English.
00:38:09This is Captain Street.
00:38:11Excuse me.
00:38:13Man looksy house.
00:38:15I catch him.
00:38:17What does he look like?
00:38:18Big man, big feet.
00:38:20Where is he now?
00:38:21Let me show you.
00:38:31See?
00:38:34I... I...
00:38:36Get out of here, you muttonhead.
00:38:38Get out!
00:38:42One of your men, Captain?
00:38:43Not as of tomorrow.
00:38:45Oh, I see.
00:38:47Good work.
00:38:49Now make us some tea, fool.
00:38:51Come on, Captain.
00:38:56Sorry about having to send that man up here, Jimmy.
00:38:58But you've been so close to me.
00:39:00What is your angle on this case, anyway?
00:39:02A group of influential Chinese think the secret of eternal fire
00:39:05is vital to the defense of China.
00:39:07You mean that this eternal fire is really on the level?
00:39:10Decidedly. Excuse me.
00:39:17Chinatown Exchange, please.
00:39:20This is James Lee Wong.
00:39:22Revered elder, please.
00:39:24Greetings.
00:39:25Only the eyebrows of youth would have the temerity
00:39:28to call the beard of age at such an hour.
00:39:31How great a blessing.
00:39:32It's clear perception.
00:39:34Welcome, James Lee.
00:39:36The eternal fire is safe?
00:39:38Not until Dr. Benton's murder is solved.
00:39:41A daughter of the moonflower named Win Lin is concerned.
00:39:45Is she known to the friends of China?
00:39:48You have added to my already heavy load of obligation.
00:39:51The eyes of the blind need no ointment.
00:39:54The site of the temple is in the hands of China's enemies.
00:39:58It is your duty to see that the secret of eternal fire
00:40:01is not used against her.
00:40:03Health, happiness, and enduring spring.
00:40:07Sun, moon, and moon.
00:40:09It is your duty to see that the secret of eternal fire
00:40:12is not used against her.
00:40:14Health, happiness, and enduring spring.
00:40:17Sun's to mourn at your grave.
00:40:20Look, I got troubles enough without having to worry
00:40:22about figuring out Chinese prophets.
00:40:24What about Win Lin?
00:40:25Now, Captain, just relax.
00:40:27We're going to have a little tea.
00:40:29And then, if you'll pick me up in the morning,
00:40:31I think we can get Win Lin to talk.
00:40:33Why wait till morning?
00:40:35She won't be going anywhere.
00:40:37All right, all right.
00:40:38Bring on the tea.
00:40:45What's all this?
00:40:46The sarcophagus from the Chinese tomb, sir,
00:40:48that once contained the body of a Ming emperor.
00:40:51They tell me that a Chinese archaeological expedition
00:40:53is digging up the body of George Washington in exchange.
00:40:57Sir?
00:40:58Well, that gives you a rough idea.
00:40:59Is Win Lin home?
00:41:01In the library.
00:41:08Good morning.
00:41:09Hello, Jimmy.
00:41:10Tommy and I were just leaving.
00:41:11Any news?
00:41:12Nothing definite.
00:41:13You met Captain Street?
00:41:14Yes.
00:41:15Hello, Captain.
00:41:16How do you do?
00:41:17You remember Tommy Dean?
00:41:18Yeah, how are you, Dean?
00:41:19We haven't wanted to bother you, Miss Benton,
00:41:21but have you thought of anything that might help us?
00:41:23No.
00:41:24No, I've racked my brain, gone over and over
00:41:26the whole expedition.
00:41:27How about you, Dean?
00:41:28This co-pilot, Mason, for instance,
00:41:30can you tell us anything about him?
00:41:32Well, he was a peculiar sort of a duck.
00:41:34However, Frasier might be able to help you.
00:41:36He was a very good friend of Mason's.
00:41:38Well, if either of you think of anything,
00:41:40let us know.
00:41:41We will.
00:41:42You gentlemen are out early this morning.
00:41:44Never mind that.
00:41:45Let's get down to business.
00:41:46Have you a few moments?
00:41:47Of course.
00:41:48There are a few things I'd like to discuss with you.
00:41:50But I've already told you everything I know.
00:41:52As Dr. Benton's secretary, perhaps,
00:41:54but we hoped you'd talk in your official capacity.
00:41:57Wait a minute.
00:41:58Remember me?
00:41:59Win Lin works for the Chinese government.
00:42:02What?
00:42:05Is that true?
00:42:07Yes.
00:42:08You'd better tell us all you know.
00:42:10I'm sure your country, as well as mine,
00:42:12must want the scroll recovered.
00:42:13Naturally, my sympathies follow my heritage,
00:42:15but after all, I am an American.
00:42:17The secret must not be used against either country.
00:42:20What is this, a spy plot?
00:42:22Could very easily be.
00:42:23The scroll contained a clue to the Temple of Eternal Fire.
00:42:26There was a shrine where, according to Chinese legend,
00:42:29there burned an undying column of fire.
00:42:31For centuries, its location was never known.
00:42:33But one thing was clear from all the stories.
00:42:35Oil replenished the flame.
00:42:37Oil seeping through the earth's surface.
00:42:39There was no doubt that if this shrine really existed,
00:42:42it must be the largest oil deposit in the world.
00:42:45Why, if that's true, that scroll is worth a fortune.
00:42:48That's why my government assigned me to Dr. Benton.
00:42:51But I failed.
00:42:52The thief was too clever for me.
00:42:54Of course, it's too late to prevent Dr. Benton's death.
00:42:57But working together, we still may retrieve the scroll
00:43:00and save other lives.
00:43:01I'll do all that I can.
00:43:03Well, if that's true,
00:43:04what about that hocus-pocus at Frasier's last night?
00:43:06I don't know.
00:43:07Honestly, I didn't telephone him.
00:43:09Well, who did?
00:43:10Frasier said the call was in Chinese.
00:43:12Probably from Chinatown.
00:43:14Wait a minute.
00:43:15If it was, it can be traced.
00:43:17The Chinatown Exchange lists subscribers by name.
00:43:20After all, all we have to do is find the operator
00:43:22who called Frasier's house.
00:43:23Yes, it's all very simple.
00:43:25Well, come on, let's get busy.
00:43:28That's all, Maine.
00:43:30We handle many phone calls each night.
00:43:33But since we know the approximate time,
00:43:35it is possible that one of the girls will remember.
00:43:39Rose Petal, you were on duty last night?
00:43:42From 8 until 12.
00:43:43This is Mr. Wong.
00:43:45Hello, Jimmy.
00:43:46Jimmy's brother and I went to high school together.
00:43:49Jimmy's brother and I went to high school together.
00:43:52Jimmy's brother and I went to high school together.
00:43:54Jimmy's brother and I went to high school together.
00:43:56Then perhaps we better let Mr. Wong explain what we want.
00:44:00Rose, this is Win Len,
00:44:02and this gentleman is Captain Street of the San Francisco Police.
00:44:05We are trying to trace a call to a Mr. Frasier
00:44:08who lives at the Old Cavern of Peace.
00:44:10You know the place?
00:44:11Yes, it is at the upper left-hand corner of my board.
00:44:14Rose means that the phone plugs in there on the board
00:44:17as she sits facing it.
00:44:18Good.
00:44:19Do you remember plugging in a call for there
00:44:21at approximately 8 o'clock last night?
00:44:23We better let Rose face the board.
00:44:25She might remember.
00:44:26Fine.
00:44:30Yes, there was a call for Mr. Frasier.
00:44:32Where did it come from?
00:44:34I'm sorry, I can't locate it exactly for you.
00:44:37The best I can do is be sure it came from this section.
00:44:40Oh, that's fine, Rose.
00:44:41At least you've narrowed it down.
00:44:42Thank you so much.
00:44:43You can furnish us a list of the subscribers
00:44:46whose names are in this area?
00:44:47Of course.
00:44:48That's the waterfront.
00:44:49Sure.
00:44:50Then all we gotta do is check them all
00:44:51and find out which one called Frasier last night.
00:44:53There are only 12 names.
00:44:55Hmm, 12 names.
00:44:57And three of them are female subscribers.
00:44:59Suppose we leave them to win Len.
00:45:01You and I can track down the others.
00:45:06Oh, this is crazy.
00:45:07Just because your friend Rose Petal has a brain wave,
00:45:09we have to check up on every Chinese laundry in town.
00:45:12The next one's the chop suey parlor.
00:45:14Maybe you'll feel better after a little lunch.
00:45:16I'll wait for Joe's Steakhouse.
00:45:17Here we are.
00:45:18Charlie One.
00:45:24Welcome, please.
00:45:25You like chop suey?
00:45:26Nah, just looking around.
00:45:27Chow mein?
00:45:28Hei fu yong?
00:45:29No?
00:45:30No, thanks.
00:45:31You here alone?
00:45:32Yes, please.
00:45:33Alone.
00:45:34Very hard on one man.
00:45:43A wise man understands the seven virtues of peace.
00:45:46Why, there's one more stone to an overloaded donkey.
00:45:49Come on, there's no harm in this, man.
00:45:50Donkey.
00:45:53May I use your phone?
00:45:54Sorry, no phone.
00:45:56What?
00:45:58I happen to know there's a phone in here.
00:46:00Where is it?
00:46:01Show it to me, chop chop.
00:46:02No phone, no phone.
00:46:03Wait a minute, wait a minute.
00:46:04See that?
00:46:05It's pretty, isn't it?
00:46:06That's me.
00:46:07I'm the law.
00:46:08If you don't tell me where that phone is,
00:46:09you're going to get in plenty of trouble.
00:46:10Let me talk to him.
00:46:17Wait a minute.
00:46:18What is all this?
00:46:19I saw him press that button and trace
00:46:21the wire to that closet.
00:46:22It looked suspicious.
00:46:23Yeah.
00:46:24Where's the phone?
00:46:26Please, no phone.
00:46:27Charlie, you want no trouble?
00:46:28You're going to get in plenty of trouble.
00:46:30Come on.
00:46:34See the flyer?
00:46:35Yeah.
00:46:36My best clothes.
00:46:37Ah, shut up.
00:46:44Looks like a panel.
00:46:45Yeah, how do you open that, Charlie?
00:46:47I don't know.
00:46:48Go on, blast it, Jimmy.
00:46:53Wait a minute, Jimmy.
00:46:54After you, Charlie.
00:46:55No.
00:46:56Get in there, you.
00:47:23That's a fine setup.
00:47:24There goes our killer.
00:47:25Did you see that knife?
00:47:27Charlie, one.
00:47:36Hey, you.
00:47:44Going someplace, Charlie?
00:47:48Hm.
00:47:49Nice work, Jimmy.
00:47:50I was held up.
00:47:51Come on, you and me is going to have a little talk.
00:47:53Come on.
00:47:54Never mind the devil.
00:48:05Well, your friend, Charlie, one, finally talked.
00:48:07Hey, what did you put in that note you sent to him?
00:48:09A little Chinese threat about the bones of his ancestors.
00:48:12Sure worked.
00:48:14He didn't know what he was talking about.
00:48:16He didn't even want me to leave.
00:48:17He wants to see you, too.
00:48:18Oh, let him wait a while.
00:48:20What did he have to say?
00:48:21Who were the two men?
00:48:22He said he didn't know their names.
00:48:24Only knew them as number one and number four.
00:48:26I showed him every picture in the place,
00:48:28but he didn't recognize any of them.
00:48:30Too bad.
00:48:31Yeah.
00:48:32You know, it's a funny thing.
00:48:34But this knife looks exactly like the one they threw at you
00:48:37the other night.
00:48:40Well, doesn't it?
00:48:42Yes.
00:48:43Might be the same knife.
00:48:47I beg your pardon.
00:48:48What is that thing?
00:48:49A little trinket you men found when they searched the hideout.
00:48:52Do you mind laying it down long enough to listen to me?
00:48:55Oh, of course not.
00:48:57I didn't mean to be rude.
00:48:58It's an interesting piece, and I was trying to trace it.
00:49:01I'm sorry.
00:49:02Oh, that's all right.
00:49:03Only Charlie dropped a bombshell,
00:49:06and I wanted to watch your face when they sprang it on you.
00:49:08I'm all face and ears.
00:49:10Well, he claims you didn't know the two men in the hideout.
00:49:12I didn't.
00:49:14But he did describe a frequent visitor.
00:49:16Who was it?
00:49:17Jonas.
00:49:18Jonas?
00:49:19The Benton butler?
00:49:20That's right.
00:49:21Let's get going.
00:49:27Oh, good evening.
00:49:28Good evening.
00:49:29Where's Jonas?
00:49:30I don't know.
00:49:31Come to think of it, I haven't seen him for several hours.
00:49:34He's probably in his room reading.
00:49:35He spends a lot of time there.
00:49:37Look over the house.
00:49:38I want to check his room.
00:49:40Have any success this afternoon?
00:49:42Yes.
00:49:43That's why we want Jonas.
00:49:44Ever see anything like that before?
00:49:46Why, that's Sun Yao, the god of vengeance.
00:49:48I haven't seen him since we were in China.
00:49:50Where did you get him?
00:49:51In a room that...
00:49:55How long since you've seen Jonas?
00:49:57He was here at lunch.
00:49:58All right.
00:49:59Did you find him?
00:50:00No, sir.
00:50:01No sign of him.
00:50:02Oh, so he's scrammed, eh?
00:50:03Yes, sir.
00:50:04I'm afraid so.
00:50:05I'm afraid so.
00:50:06Did you find him?
00:50:07No, sir.
00:50:08No sign of him.
00:50:09Oh, so he's scrammed, eh?
00:50:10OK.
00:50:11Send out a description on the radio and have him picked up.
00:50:13That settles it.
00:50:14You mean that Jonas killed Dr. Benton?
00:50:16Sure, but he won't get far away.
00:50:18Jonas.
00:50:19I can't believe it.
00:50:23Look!
00:50:33Jonas!
00:50:37Not a fingerprint or anything.
00:50:41I still can't understand how they stuffed him in there without you knowing about it.
00:50:44I'm sorry, Captain, but my duties take me all over the house.
00:50:47Besides, I was working on those phone subscribers until dinner time.
00:50:50Yeah, yeah, I know.
00:50:51I'm just making noises.
00:50:53This case has got me daffy.
00:50:55Daggers, fingerprints, scrolls, poison.
00:51:02Hello.
00:51:04Yeah, Doc.
00:51:07What?
00:51:09You don't say.
00:51:11All right, you do say then.
00:51:13OK, thanks.
00:51:15How do you like that?
00:51:17This was stuck in Jonas after he died.
00:51:20And what killed him?
00:51:21The same poison that killed Dr. Benton.
00:51:24Well, we're getting no place fast.
00:51:27Well, what do you say, Mastermind?
00:51:29I'm going crazy and you're playing with a doll.
00:51:32I guess we're both going crazy.
00:51:34We were talking about this God of Vengeance, you called it?
00:51:37Yes, he's a local deity found among the nomad tribes of the Gobi Desert.
00:51:41In the same district as the Emperor's tomb?
00:51:43Yes, as far as I know, that's the only place.
00:51:45Now, wait a minute, children.
00:51:47I don't want to hear any more about Oriental hocus pocus.
00:51:49All I want to know is who killed Doc Benton and who killed Jonas.
00:51:53I think maybe we're getting warm.
00:51:55Any report on the two men in the motorboat?
00:51:57No, the harbor patrol hasn't turned up a thing.
00:52:00Are you desperate?
00:52:01Am I desperate?
00:52:03You're looking at a man who's got five newspapers,
00:52:05a police commissioner, and the whole town around his neck.
00:52:07And he asks me, am I desperate?
00:52:09I mean desperate enough to try a long shot.
00:52:12Sure, I'll try anything. What is it?
00:52:17Get me the Tribune.
00:52:20Mr. Miles.
00:52:22Jimmy Wong calling.
00:52:34Mr. Miles calling.
00:52:42Following the startling announcement that Mason,
00:52:44the missing pilot of the Benton expedition, had been found
00:52:47and the diagnosis of his condition,
00:52:49it was announced that he has been taken to St. Christopher's Hospital
00:52:51and is shortly expected to regain consciousness.
00:52:54The police confidently expect that as soon as he does so,
00:52:56they will obtain valuable information in the Benton murder investigation.
00:53:03All right, run this wire through the wind and connect it up.
00:53:05If I'm right, the killer will try to prevent Mason from talking.
00:53:08And for tonight, I'm going to be Mason.
00:53:10But Jimmy, how can you be sure that Mason's alive?
00:53:13I can't.
00:53:14But I'm banking on the killer not being sure either.
00:53:16Then Mason might even be the killer.
00:53:18That's right.
00:53:19But Jimmy...
00:53:20Oh, there's nothing to worry about.
00:53:22All we're trying to do is get these people out in the open.
00:53:24This microphone will pick up the slightest noise.
00:53:27You and Grady and I will be listening in.
00:53:29If any trouble starts, we'll know it as soon as Jimmy.
00:53:31Come on, let's let him get to bed.
00:53:33Promise to yell if anything happens.
00:53:35I promise.
00:53:36Then good luck.
00:53:45Oh, snap out of it.
00:53:47Nothing's going to happen.
00:53:48The grounds are knee-deep in cops.
00:53:50Nice detail, eh?
00:53:52Yeah, street must be off his nut, us patrolling a joint like this.
00:53:55Sure, I've never seen one of these stakeouts work yet.
00:54:00Yeah.
00:54:13Everything okay?
00:54:14Yeah, listen.
00:54:17This is station W-O-N-G signing off.
00:54:20We'll be back later with some interesting disclosures, I hope.
00:54:24That's good. Keep it tuned, eh?
00:54:29Sure.
00:54:56Hey, Grady.
00:54:57Yeah?
00:54:58Come on, come on, stay awake.
00:54:59What time is it?
00:55:01It's 2.30.
00:55:03You heard anything?
00:55:04No, no, not a peep.
00:55:06Come on.
00:55:28Them men try to keep the same eye as us cops do, don't they?
00:55:31Yeah.
00:55:36You'd better give me a couple minutes.
00:55:38Fine.
00:55:52What's the matter?
00:55:53Oh, I'm worried.
00:55:55There's nothing to worry about.
00:56:06Come on.
00:56:36Drop it.
00:56:58Come on, reach.
00:57:06Come on.
00:57:17There's something I think will interest you.
00:57:24So, Fraser, it was you who threw the knife at me.
00:57:27Sure, we were watching from the garden.
00:57:29It's awfully nice of you to arrange this little party, Mr. Wong.
00:57:33Perhaps I'd better introduce myself.
00:57:35Whom you so rashly decided to impersonate.
00:57:37I was hoping you'd turn up,
00:57:39particularly after we found the God of Vengeance in your hideout,
00:57:42back of Charlie One's.
00:57:44Then you can see this gives me a chance to satisfy the little fellow.
00:57:47You and Fraser were partners, eh?
00:57:49That's right.
00:57:50But Fraser decided to double-cross me.
00:57:53Tried to kill me and left me for dead in the desert.
00:57:55Fortunately, a wandering tribe picked me up and nursed me back to health.
00:57:59That's where you got the God of Vengeance.
00:58:02That's why you broke into Fraser's house and searched for the scroll.
00:58:05You knew he had it.
00:58:06It's a lie.
00:58:07Oh, no, it isn't, Fraser.
00:58:08And we're going to take you someplace where we can make you talk.
00:58:11I'd have finished him that night, but you interrupted me.
00:58:14Since then, he's been in hiding,
00:58:16but I thought this little trick of yours would smoke him out.
00:58:19I'm afraid you're going to have a little trouble getting away.
00:58:22I don't think so.
00:58:23Torino there is our intern.
00:58:25We have an ambulance waiting downstairs.
00:58:28Hey, Grady.
00:58:29Yeah?
00:58:30Haven't you heard anything on that thing?
00:58:31No, nothing.
00:58:32A few minutes ago, there was just a little click, and then there was all...
00:58:35A click?
00:58:36Yeah.
00:58:37Give me that headset.
00:58:38Take Fraser out.
00:58:39I'll keep Wong busy until you get started.
00:58:41Come on, Fraser.
00:58:42Get moving.
00:58:43You can't bluff me.
00:58:44This is no bluff.
00:58:45Move!
00:58:50Why, it's dead.
00:58:51Something's happened to the wire.
00:58:52What do you mean it's dead?
00:58:53I went over to fix the thing.
00:58:54It was all ready when we...
00:59:01Come on.
00:59:12All right, break it up.
00:59:13Come on, now.
00:59:14Relax.
00:59:15Come on, get up.
00:59:16Nice work, Jimmy.
00:59:17Well, Fraser, you'd better talk now.
00:59:20As soon as I saw the film of the expedition,
00:59:22I felt sure that you had cut it,
00:59:24and that the camera had photographed more than you admitted.
00:59:26Yeah.
00:59:27The reason you killed Doc Benton
00:59:28is because you didn't want him to tell about the oil.
00:59:30What about Jonas?
00:59:31He knew that Fraser had stolen the scroll
00:59:33and was working with Mason to try to get it back.
00:59:35Fraser killed him, too.
00:59:37You are very clever, Mr. Wong,
00:59:38but you still haven't got the scroll,
00:59:40and what's more, you'll never get it.
00:59:42You see, I destroyed it.
00:59:43Oddly enough, I believe you, Fraser,
00:59:45but you didn't destroy it without photographing it.
00:59:48The scroll itself would have been difficult to dispose of.
00:59:50Besides, the contents are the most important thing.
00:59:53Search him, Captain.
00:59:54Come on.
00:59:57What am I looking for?
00:59:58Film.
01:00:01That's probably it.
01:00:02What's that?
01:00:03That's too small.
01:00:04The picture's inside.
01:00:05Open it.
01:00:12May I?
01:00:16This is part of China.
01:00:17I think we can trust you to see that it remains so.
01:00:20What do you think, Captain?
01:00:21Well, I think you're right.
01:00:22I think we can trust you to see that it remains so.
01:00:25I think we can trust you to see that it remains so.
01:00:27I think we can trust you to see that it remains so.
01:00:29Well, I think you're right,
01:00:30except that I think someone should go along to help.
01:00:33That is, someone who understands the language
01:00:35and, well, the customs.
01:00:37That is, somebody like yourself.
01:00:41It's a wise man who understands a nod.
01:00:52Well, come on, come on.
