00:00Siemens, Jaguar, Land Rover and the Britain's Protection. That's what's coming
00:04up in today's Daily Business Briefing.
00:12Hi, I'm Simon Keegan. And I'm Chantelle Dates. So Chantelle, it's your debut on the
00:17Daily Business Briefing, isn't it? It is, yeah. You're our new-ish property editor.
00:23Yeah. Have you got a property story for us today then? I do have a property story.
00:27So commuters into Manchester will probably know this building very well.
00:32It's the Siemens building on Princess Parkway. That has been acquired
00:37by the Northern Group. It's the group's third acquisition actually in as
00:41many months. They've already bought the DKNY building on King Street and
00:4619 Spring Gardens just off Market Street. So yeah, it's been a great few months for
00:52them. And now they're going to explore what they will do with the building and
00:56it's a seven-acre site. There's quite a lot of land there for them to look into
01:01what they'll do with that. Yeah, they were quite recent acquisitions, weren't they?
01:04I remember talking about those on this Business Briefing in the last few weeks,
01:08I think. Yeah, it's only been since the summer. Yeah, so we're talking of
01:12iconic buildings. The Britain's Protection pub, which has got to be one
01:17of Manchester's most iconic pubs, I would say. I mean that pub dates back to kind
01:24of the Napoleonic era. They used to use that building to recruit
01:29soldiers for the for the wars against Napoleon and when there was the Peter
01:34Loo Massacre, which obviously is what's now St. Peter's Square, that's where
01:39the injured were taken to. So it's this really historic building and they've
01:44been locked in dispute, the pub has, with Heineken over various kind of leases and
01:51what beers they're allowed to sell and stuff like that. But that's come to a
01:55resolution now and it was Pannoni's real estate team who were looking
02:02after the case and so that sounds like a great resolution. So I think we can
02:07drink to that, can't we? I think we can. And so what else has caught your eye today?
02:11So this is news today that Jaguar Land Rover have invested 500 million into
02:18their Hailwood factory in Merseyside. This is a 61 year old factory so it's
02:24quite an old building and they've already upgraded and extended the
02:28facility in preparation for electric vehicle production and 250 million pounds
02:34has already gone into new production lines, machinery, people and digital
02:39technology and another 250 million will be injected over the coming years there.
02:44So it's quite an exciting development over in Merseyside. It is, well I visited
02:48that factory a couple of years ago and I guess that would have been before any of
02:53this, before they were even thinking about electric vehicles probably. Yeah.
02:57But it's so interesting because you saw the big cubes of Tatar steel coming in
03:03on one side and then you'd see the finished Land Rovers coming out of the
03:08other side, you know. But it was surprising to me just how quiet it
03:13was, the production line. It was, you'd imagine a car production line to be
03:16really noisy, wouldn't you? Yeah. It's quite quiet and a lot of it was was done more by
03:22hand than you would expect. Okay. Literally pieces of A4 paper sellotaped to, you
03:28know, with with different spec on there and so on. Right, okay. And some customers,
03:32I guess if they were sort of like wealthy customers who were having a
03:37really special order of one of these vehicles, could even come in and kind of
03:42customise it themselves. They could sort of, you know, add little touches. So really, it
03:48was really nice. I love a factory visit when we're doing the magazine. Yeah.
03:51Because, you know, it gives me a chance to really kind of get to know the company.
03:55Yeah. So talking of which, that's Noseley area. We've got a special feature about
04:01Noseley in the next issue. So our colleague Remy is writing that and it's
04:06going to be a regional review. We're going to be looking at all of the exciting
04:11goings on in that area, meet some of the companies. I imagine JLL is going to be
04:15among them. Yeah. We've also got a piece going in the next issue on challenges to
04:21the big four. So in the last couple of issues ago, we looked at the big four
04:26accountancy firms KPMG, EY, Deloitte, PwC and kind of their place in the market.
04:34Now we're looking at the challenges, the people going up against them. So I
04:40interviewed a couple of days ago, for example, Shrew Morris, who's the new
04:44deputy CEO at Dow Schofield Watts. And Shrew, some of our readers, viewers may
04:52know her from her days at Knapton Solicitors in Preston, but she's now at
04:56DSW. She was telling me about plans to expand into other professional services.
05:02So it's things like that, interesting things that's going on. I will just say
05:07as well, the October issue of Northwest Business Insider has landed today. We've
05:12got some great stuff in that. If you haven't seen a copy of that, you can get
05:16in touch. We've got the 42 under 42 in there, really anticipated. We've also got
05:22the dealmakers preview so you can see what's coming up there. Another sold out
05:26event. We've got our legal review. We've got our Cheshire ones to watch. Really
05:30well worth picking up this issue. Now, Chantal, you're just finally, you're off
05:36to London. I'm off to London on Monday with a team of property experts from
05:41Greater Manchester. So the likes of JLL, Edwards and CBRE are joining us. We're
05:47going to be sharing insights on the region's property market. So we're
05:50covering industrial workspaces and residential. We'll also be joined by
05:56Martin Evans from Landsat Q&I. He'll be talking about the 1.5 billion investment
06:01into Mayfield. So it's going to be a really exciting event. And I'm really
06:06looking forward to sharing what the fantastic region has to offer. Well, look forward to
06:10reading your findings as well. And that's going to be in the November issue as
06:14well. So again, guys, if you don't subscribe, you can get in touch. I might
06:18even send you a discount code. Feeling generous. All of the stories that we've
06:23talked about, you'll find on InsiderMedia.com. You can also follow me
06:28and Chantal and any of the team over on LinkedIn and Twitter as well. I think
06:33that's all we've got time for, Chantal. Yeah, thank you, Simon. See you next time.
