00:00A social disorder that we will talk about this morning may affect our family members or acquaintances when they are not aware or we think it's normal. Let's watch this.
00:14Do you know someone who always avoids talking to each other?
00:19Who is shy or afraid of being alone?
00:22Avoidant Personality Disorder is a condition where an individual is afraid of being rejected and being judged by others, so they often avoid people and situations.
00:45This is a serious condition that is important to talk about because it affects work, studies, everyday life, and friendship of a person.
00:58What are the steps to help people with this condition? Let's find out what Doc has to say about it here in Rise and Shine, Philippines.
01:11And to answer our questions, we have Dr. Bernadette Manalo, a psychiatrist. Good morning, Doc. This is Prof. Fie together with Audrey.
01:21Good morning, Doc.
01:23Good morning, everyone. Rise and Shine, Philippines.
01:27Doctor, for those who are not familiar, what is Avoidant Personality Disorder or APD? How can this affect the growth of a child?
01:41Childhood symptoms are normal, right? You're shy, you're not very sociable.
01:53But when you're older, of course, socially, the expectations there are that you know how to communicate, you know how to socialize, and at the same time, you're not afraid of people.
02:07Go ahead, Doc.
02:11Yes, go ahead.
02:12Doc, we are actually receiving terms or using terms in the society such as antisocial, introvert, or ambivert.
02:22So there are many people who are confused about Avoidant Personality Disorder, social anxiety disorder, and other terminologies that I mentioned.
02:31What are the differences?
02:34Okay, the Avoidant Personality Disorder, they don't want to be confused.
02:42Anti-social personality disorder.
02:47Those are people who have traits, right?
02:53That they are prone to criminal acts, criminal liabilities, and they have no concern if they are hurting people, and they have no guilt in doing such things.
03:08So that's the difference.
03:10I know the problem, sir, because when you say antisocial, you think they don't want to socialize, right?
03:19They don't want to.
03:20But that's not the case.
03:21When you say antisocial personality disorder, these are the people who do things that are not attuned to society.
03:31These are the people who have criminal liabilities.
03:35These are the people who are like outlaws.
03:39That's antisocial.
03:40The Avoidant Personality Disorder, these are the people who really don't want to be afraid of facing people.
03:50They don't want to be ashamed.
03:52So be careful when using the term antisocial.
03:55For me, it's antisocial because it has a big responsibility as someone having that kind of trait.
04:04But Doc, on the other hand, we also mentioned introvert and social anxiety disorder.
04:12What are these?
04:14Introvert is a common term for someone who doesn't want to be socially connected with other people.
04:27When you say extrovert, it means someone who is too active, too talkative.
04:32That's the fun in the group.
04:35What was the other question?
04:38The social anxiety disorder, Doc.
04:41Okay.
04:42The social anxiety disorder is when they have social phobia.
04:48When they face people, they have severe anxiety attacks.
04:52They find it hard to breathe.
04:57They hyperventilate.
04:58And they are so afraid that they seem to melt in front of people.
05:05Okay.
05:06This one, Doctor.
05:07Okay, bye.
05:08In our population in the Philippines,
05:11how common is the avoidant personality disorder in our population?
05:17Who are the most affected by this APD?
05:20Is there a particular group or age range that is prone to this?
05:27They are seen mostly based on studies in women.
05:33Avoidant personality disorder.
05:36And it's not just that.
05:38Usually, it also starts during the time, during the adolescent years.
05:45The most common personality disorders, they usually would start 18 and above.
05:50And these are people, you know, they are isolated themselves.
05:57They are not the type that they will talk to you.
06:00They will talk to strangers.
06:02They are not like that.
06:03And if they want to escape from a social responsibility, they will do that.
06:09There.
06:10Doctor, in terms of age range, is there a chance that this age range is prone to this disorder?
06:21Usually, it would start during the adolescent years.
06:25And all personality disorders, they usually would start 18 years old and above.
06:32So, young adults, you will see that.
06:35But usually, there are what we call pre-morbid symptoms.
06:40This is the newly seen avoidant personality disorder.
06:47They have symptoms like shyness.
06:52They are not really, they are just followers in school.
06:57They would not initiate to talk or to deal with projects in school.
07:05Okay.
07:06You've mentioned symptoms, Doc.
07:07But we want to know, what are the possible triggers of avoidant personality disorder?
07:13What are the symptoms of avoidant personality disorder or APD?
07:18Yes.
07:19They are afraid to assume responsibility.
07:25They don't want to be a part of any socially connected activities.
07:34They have a feeling that they are not good enough.
07:39They are low.
07:41They are not worth it.
07:43They would avoid going to public places.
07:52If a student has APD, how can they handle their condition in school?
08:00Especially when they need to socialize.
08:03You know, I remember when I was a kid, I was a bit aloof to people.
08:08I was really shy.
08:09Until such time, I built my confidence.
08:12So, to the group of children or young people who have APD,
08:19what should the parents do?
08:21And what should the child do?
08:25Usually, the parents and teachers in school notice that they are alone in a corner.
08:37Let's start with the family.
08:41If the parents would see that the child is afraid to go out,
08:47they would be very sensitive to their opinions.
08:50They are not afraid to cry when there are things that they are afraid to say.
08:57They feel that it is just an act of incriminating.
09:01And they try to avoid going to birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas.
09:06It is very sad.
09:08So, if a parent sees this, they will see the worth of their children.
09:17How?
09:18If they can have some talents that they would be good at,
09:23or interests that they would excel,
09:27that would actually help a lot to deal with the self-esteem of the child.
09:33Anyway, thank you very much, Dr. Bernadette Manalo.
09:36Thank you so much for sharing important information about the avoidance of APD.
09:41Thank you so much.
09:43Let us not be judgmental to those who do not socialize much,
09:47or those who are just quiet.
09:49It is important for us to be clear on how important it is to have right understanding
09:56in this type of conversation.
09:58And it is also important for us to know our interests
10:00so we can not avoid what activities we can do.
