00:20Emerson Romero was born on August 19, 1900 in Havana, Cuba.
00:25At six years old, he was diagnosed with a whooping cough, which caused him to lose his
00:29hearing.
00:30A year later, his parents enrolled him in New York City's Wright Oral School.
00:35After receiving further education in the United States, he earned a job at the Federal Reserve
00:39Bank of New York.
00:41In 1924, Romero's brother started a film company in Cuba, and he was invited to join.
00:47He initially worked as a stagehand behind the scenes but his brother inspired him to
00:51try acting.
00:52Romero's athleticism allowed him to do his own stunts, and before he knew it, he starred
00:57in A Yankee in Havana.
00:59Romero's performance drew attention from Hollywood film executives and shortly after,
01:03he moved to California to pursue more opportunities on the silver screen.
01:08Over the next few years, Romero acted in over 20 short films including popular ones like
01:12Great Guns, Sappy Days, and The Cat's Meow.
01:16In 1927, sound films, also known as talkies, became all the rage.
01:22Studios stopped selecting actors with hearing impairments and eliminated title cards.
01:27They also removed subtitles from finished films, making it impossible for people with
01:31hearing impairments to enjoy the movie.
01:34Romero returned to his previous job at the bank and became a prominent force in the deaf
01:38community.
01:39He and his friends started the Theater Guild of the Deaf in New York City.
01:43The company put on plays, many of which Romero acted in or directed.
01:47He also became editor of the Digest of the Deaf magazine and wrote weekly gossip columns
01:51for the Farmingdale Post.
