US: "Unsurvivable" Hurricane Helene Slams Florida, At Least 1 Dead | Firstpost Earth

Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend area as a Category 4 storm, packing winds of 225 km/h and triggering flash floods along the coast. Ahead of the landfall, officials warned of a "catastrophic" storm surge capable of swamping two-story houses, calling it an "unsurvivable scenario." Evacuation orders are in place for low-lying areas, and over one million homes and businesses have lost power. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis reported one fatality. Tampa and Tallahassee airports closed ahead of the storm. US President Joe Biden has directed more federal resources to the affected states and urged people to follow official orders for their safety.

01:48Most of the data we have does have a Taylor County landfall,
01:52but all those areas there along the Big Bend Coast in areas that are low-lying,
01:58that are susceptible to potentially major storm surge,
02:02you're under an evacuation order.
02:04Some people have.
02:05Because the storm isn't going to get here until a little later,
02:08we're going to see some effects soon,
02:10but right now you actually still have time to be able to evacuate.

02:29Once we start to get the real nasty conditions,
02:32don't at that point go on the roadways.
02:35That is very hazardous.
02:36That does produce fatalities when people do that in the middle of the storm.
02:40If you are sheltering at home, be cognizant of what trees are around you.

03:41I've directed FEMA to work with the state partners to take proactive measures
03:45to ensure the communities in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee,
03:49South Carolina, and other states have the support and resources they need.
03:53That includes improving pre-landfall emergency declaration requests
03:58from the governors of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Alabama.
04:03In my direction, more than 1,000 federal personnel have already been deployed to those areas.
