Politics should be a force for unity, not division, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Speaking at the 2024 Political Economy Forum on Wednesday (Sept 18), the MCA President emphasised the need for all Malaysians to collectively moderate the current political tensions while respecting each other’s interests.

Later, Dr Wee told reporters that both the government and the opposition must seek a common platform to ensure the political stability essential for the people's wellbeing and economic growth.

00:00and policy research inside the Vice-President of the Government.
00:31for the first time in 2014
00:35compared to the same time last year.
00:38Politics should be a tool to unite the people,
00:43not to suppress them.
00:45Politicians and political parties need to play a role
00:47as agents of intimidation
00:49to the oppressed communities in our country
00:52as I always emphasize and convey
00:55especially to the members of the MCA party.
00:58We want change
01:01and change needs to start from us.
01:05The level of politics in our country needs to be reduced.
01:10In today's situation,
01:12both the government and the opposition
01:14can no longer be too ultra-right
01:18or ultra-left.
01:20Because in Malaysia, the people say
01:24and we do not deny the rights of the people
01:27to respect each other.
01:29Let's work together
01:31as a team in the struggle
01:34to release each other.
01:45Politics is to manage the problems
01:50or the affairs of the people.
01:52The way of life of the people
01:55and how they can be prosperous
02:00in terms of their income
02:03and their job opportunities
02:06is related to a comprehensive economic development.
02:10Politics is a stage
02:18where every five years we elect a leader.
02:21Whether we can form a stable government
02:25or not,
02:27it is up to the people.
02:29But when there is uncertainty,
02:32how can the politicians
02:34come up with a strategy
02:37or a partnership
02:39and finally,
02:41be able to strengthen the situation
02:43and find a point of stability.
02:47That is very important
02:48because without political stability,
02:50there will be no economic development
02:54that can be seen by investors
02:57as a strong enough country.
03:02And they do not want to see
03:04our base being changed.
03:06That is why political stability
03:08gives confidence to foreign investors
03:11and domestic investors.
03:14So when they want to make a decision,
03:16I think it will also affect the people.
03:20So when domestic investment
03:23cannot be planned,
03:26it will affect the politicians.
03:31Because this is a question of life.
03:35How to provide for the people.
03:37I think there is an art
03:39in the way we politicize.
03:42We need a more prosperous democracy.
03:48And at the same time,
03:49what verdict has been delivered to the people,
03:53we accept and translate
03:56into a stable government.
03:59No matter what the scenario is,
04:01whether it is a joint effort
04:03or we have gone through
04:06the 90% power,
04:09we have gone through that.
04:10But we have also gone through the parliament.
04:13So this summarizes all the possibilities
04:17and I think this is a challenge for us.
