Exclusive look at Snap’s new augmented reality goggles
Building augmented reality glasses is “a journey”, Evan Spiegel the co-founder and CEO of Snap says, a “blue ocean strategy”, a leap into new territory.

Stuffing highly complex technology, not to mention batteries, into a wearable pair of frames is certainly a technological holy grail.

On Tuesday evening, Snap revealed the fifth generation of Spectacles, the first time they have been updated since 2021.

Despite the drawbacks, the weight and short 45 minute battery life, the latest version, uniting the digital and real worlds, is an impressive feat of engineering.

As it copes with a floundering share price, a challenging ad market, onerous regulation on social media and deep-pocketed competitors, some investors wonder if the loss-making company can afford to swim in such uncharted waters. It has not disclosed how much it has spent on research and development for the product.

Spiegel told The Times it was an investment in the company’s future: “I don’t think it’s enough to just execute on the business of today. I think you have to build the business of tomorrow”.

00:00Companies around the globe are racing to develop augmented reality, or AR, spending a fortune
00:10betting that the way users interact with digital content is going to change.
00:15I've come to Snap's London office, that's the company that gave the world Snapchat,
00:19to get a sneak peek at their latest AR glasses.
00:24What we're showing you here today is Snap's new Spectacles.
00:28So this is a completely untethered spatial computing device.
00:32So it has processors to understand the world around you, cameras to see both the world
00:38around you and the hands around you, and an optical engine and waveguides to actually
00:43project virtual content directly into the world around you.
00:46And what's different to some of the other devices out there is this is a pair of see-through
00:50glasses.
00:51You're actually seeing the real world directly.
00:54You're not putting the real world behind a video feed or anything like this, as you
00:58would see in VR.
01:01This is the first time since 2021 that Snap has released a pair of Spectacles.
01:06And they're still not aimed at all of us, but a small run is being made for its developers.
01:10At Snap, we're all about bringing people together, close friends.
01:15And we see an opportunity on the computing side.
01:20If you look today, everyone's staring down at their phones.
01:24We'd actually like to free people from these kind of small screens that they're looking
01:28down on and actually have people looking out at the world.
01:33So now we're actually building a full 3D mesh of the world around us.
