00:00Meet Yasmin Sarwar, a dedicated educator who has led two of the highest performing A-levels colleges in the United Kingdom for 15 consecutive years.
00:13She is a passionate believer of one principle, that everyone should always set the highest standards for themselves.
00:23You know, we should always demand excellence. Demanding excellence should be a child's, you know, it's their right to demand excellence for their education.
00:33And I just felt that I needed to instill in these kids that you can be excellent. It doesn't matter what grades you achieve, but you can always aspire to be excellent.
00:44Born in Lawas and raised in Kuching, Yasmin went to the UK for her A-levels on scholarship.
00:51While doing her Masters in Cardiff, she took up teaching to pass the time. Many of the kids in her neighbourhood were underperforming academically.
01:01What was supposed to be a hobby was supposed to be something that I fill in my time. I was only doing two or three hours a week, but because these kids went on to do so well, a lot of people started knocking on my door.
01:14In 2004, she founded the Cardiff Centre of Excellence, a private tutorial centre. This would eventually become the Cardiff Sixth Form College, which went on to top the Education Advisors League tables from 2010 to 2017.
01:33And the idea of a sixth form college, an unknown sixth form college in Wales to top the league table was unheard of. Unheard. I mean, we really changed the dynamics of what a top school looks like.
01:48Now, she is the Chief Education Officer at Oxford International College, one of the UK's highest performing independent A-levels colleges. All in all, she has helped over 800 students gain admission into prestigious universities such as Oxford and Cambridge.
02:07What I take great pride in is how we have transformed students into that aspirational journey to get those top results. But even more so is aiming for the very best, you know, finding your passion, discovering your passion, turning your passion into a talent and then finding the best universities for that passion. That is a journey that really changes lives.
02:27Yasmin is currently working on an educational blueprint based on her decades of experience that she believes will assist teachers with all types of curriculums, even Malaysia's SPM.
02:40I contribute Malaysia to my development, to what it made me to be today. So definitely, I would want to bring this as many places as possible to help as many kids as possible.
