00:00Welcome, everybody, to the 76th Emmy Awards.
00:07Yeah.
00:08Also known as broadcast TV's biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services.
00:16We're very, very excited to be here tonight.
00:20I think most of you know we are not stand-up comedians.
00:23No. In fact, I wouldn't even really call us hosts.
00:26We're more like, what, like actors acting like hosts, which is a huge gamble for us.
00:32But if it goes well tonight, my name is pronounced Levy, not Levy.
00:37And if things go south, my name is pronounced Martin Short.
00:44This is actually the first opportunity that we have had to work together since our show Schitt's Creek ended.
00:49True.
00:51Thank you so much.
00:56Unless you count the time you tried to convince Ryan Murphy to cast us as the Menendez brothers, which...
01:03Well, they weren't twins.
01:04It was a bad idea. It was a really bad idea.
01:06Nevertheless, nevertheless, good to be back by your side.
01:09You know, this is a very special night for me.
01:13You know, I played a lot of dads in my day.
01:15Yes, I was a dad in American Pie.
01:17I was a dad in Finding Dory.
01:19And our show, Schitt's Creek.
01:21Sure.
01:22But without question, my most rewarding dad role ever has been being your dad.
01:33In Schitt's Creek.
01:36Because it got me my first acting Emmy.
01:38Yeah.
01:43Why are we applauding bad parenting?
01:45Anyway, we are off to a really heartwarming start.
01:48Little bit of history here.
01:50Emmy history, the very first Emmy's host in 1949 was Walter O'Keefe.
01:58That's true.
01:59And tonight we are making Emmy history as the very first father-son pair to mention Walter O'Keefe since 1949.
02:06Now, we're all here celebrating tonight because your shows struck a chord with audiences.
02:12Your stories, your characters, we see ourselves in them.
02:16We've all had a teacher that's changed our lives like Quinta Brunson in Abbott Elementary.
02:29Yeah, and we've all had a codependent, borderline, homoerotic relationship with our boss, like Hannah Einbinder in Hacks.
02:36No.
02:37What?
02:41That's not quite it.
02:43It's not?
02:44We're talking about universal truths.
02:46Okay.
02:47Like how we've all struggled to make friends in a new city, like Carrie Coon in The Gilded Age.
02:52Right.
02:53Yeah.
02:55Sure.
02:56And how we've all done salacious tell-alls with the BBC to get back at a lying, cheating ex, like Elizabeth Debicki in The Crown.
03:03Okay, you know what?
03:07I just, I don't think you're getting it.
03:10I think I am getting it.
03:11No, no, no, no, no.
03:12Striking a chord was the point.
03:14But anyway, let's move on.
03:15Happily, we haven't even given out a single award tonight, and yet Shogun has already made Emmy history.
03:22At the Creative Arts Emmys held last weekend, the Shogun team took home 14 Emmys, making it the most decorated show in a single season.
03:38Yeah.
03:43And deservedly so.
03:44And so, I mean, the attention to detail on that show, the creators of Shogun actually had their scripts translated into Japanese, rewritten, and then translated back into English subtitles that you missed because you were also on your phone watching Sabrina Carpenter eat a hot wing.
04:01The Bear is nominated for 23 Emmys tonight.
04:08Making it the most nominated comedy in history.
04:13Now, I love the show, I love the show, and I know some of you might be expecting us to make a joke about whether The Bear is really a comedy.
04:24But in the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes.
04:29It's a big year for queer representation on TV.
04:33Nava Mao with her first nomination.
04:40Colin Taylor with her ninth.
04:46And then there's Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer, both recognized tonight for playing lovers and fellow travelers.
04:52Yeah.
04:53Proving that you can be nominated for playing gay even if you're not straight.
05:05And, you know, I'm particularly proud of my streamer, Apple TV Plus, which...
05:12...which continues to proudly and visibly align itself with the LGBTQ community.
05:23That's not what the plus stands for.
05:28That's not...
05:31That's not what the plus stands for.
05:34That's not what the plus stands for.
05:39That's not...
05:41Well then, what does it stand for?
05:43I don't know, you're the one with the show on there.
05:46Apple TV Plus?
05:48Yeah, and Paramount Plus, Disney Plus, ESPN Plus, all also not directly affiliated with the community.
05:57Well, that I knew.
05:59Yeah.
06:00I just...
06:01Reservation Dogs has four nominations tonight.
06:09After three excellent seasons of widespread critical acclaim,
06:13they finally received a nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series.
06:18Yeah.
06:19So you might say, the Academy voters found a show that's been creatively thriving for years and said,
06:24hey, look what we discovered.
06:27Baby Reindeers nominated for 11 Emmys this year.
06:31Sure is.
06:34The show was both frightening and oddly relatable for everyone out there
06:38whose parents still haven't mastered the art of texting.
06:41Like this text I got from my mom.
06:43Oddly relatable for everyone out there whose parents still haven't mastered the art of texting.
06:48Like this text I got from my dad about tonight's show.
06:53Let's host Emmys, Colin Farrell will be there.
06:56You still have crush?
07:00I didn't think these were going public.
07:02Or this one.
07:03Walter O'Keefe joke.
07:05Too mean?
07:06Sent from my iPhone.
07:09You don't even own an iPhone.
07:11What does it matter?
07:12This last one.
07:14Best ramen near me.
07:15Okay, I think that was just a mistake.
07:17I think you were just Googling something.
07:18I was hungry.
07:19Alright.
07:20And I'm still hungry.
07:21There are 59,000 more where those came from.
07:23Alright, okay, got it.
07:24Before we get to our first award tonight, we just wanted to chat about acceptance.
07:29Please.
07:30In what can only be described as a cruel joke,
07:33two Canadians have been put in charge of playing you off tonight.
07:36Canadians don't like interrupting anybody.
07:40It goes against our nature.
07:41Confrontation in general is anxiety-inducing,
07:43especially for my 77-year-old father, okay?
07:46I don't like it.
07:47The man is frailer than he looks.
07:49He gets palpitations from time to time.
07:51I'm hearing about tendinitis.
07:52Okay, that's good.
07:53No, no.
07:54The point is,
07:56if you're going to say anything meaningful or emotional or, God forbid, political,
08:01just keep it short because the pressure alone on me...
08:04Yeah, I don't want to be alarmist here,
08:06but having to cut you off could kill this man.
08:08Okay.
08:09On that note, please welcome our first presenters.
