00:00Everybody knows that some things are alive, and some things are not, but sometimes it
00:09can be hard to tell them apart.
00:12Let's learn about the features that determine whether something is alive.
00:17Living things are called organisms.
00:20An organism is any living thing, from elephants to trees.
00:26Even the green scum floating on ponds is an organism.
00:30First, all living things need some kind of energy, nutrients, or food.
00:37This does not mean, however, that all living organisms will eat.
00:42Some organisms, like plants, can make their own food.
00:47Second, all living things can grow.
00:51Living things grow in different ways.
00:54Some organisms grow to a specific size and then stop, while others may keep getting larger
00:59through their entire life, but all living things can grow and become larger.
01:06Third, living things react to changes in their environment.
01:12This could be anything from a person using an umbrella to keep dry in the rain, to a
01:16plant sending its roots deeper into the ground to reach water.
01:21To react to change, organisms need to be able to sense when things change.
01:28Humans and many other animals have senses like sight, hearing, and touch to help us
01:33know when conditions have changed, but even plants have senses that allow them to tell
01:38where the light is and which way is up and down.
01:43Finally, all living things can reproduce.
01:47Whether this means making seeds, having babies, or even just dividing, living things can make
01:54more of themselves.
01:58Now that you've learned how to tell if something is living or nonliving, let's look at some
02:04examples and see if you can tell whether they are living or nonliving.
