00:00Hi kids! Today we will learn about living and non-living things. So let's get started!
00:11Kids, a lot of things around us make our surroundings. Some of them are living and some of them are non-living.
00:23Like you, your friends, these plants, these trees, these birds are examples of living things.
00:36And your bags, your clothes, shoes, these buildings are examples of non-living things. Let's learn more about it.
00:49Living things are those that grow, that move, eat, breathe, excrete, reproduce, and react to the world around them.
01:04They have senses or sense organs. Reproduce means to produce young ones of its kind.
01:13Like cats give birth to small kittens. Dogs give birth to small puppies. Humans give birth to small babies.
01:26Plants too reproduce the plants of their own kind. Like seed of a mango tree will produce a mango tree. Seed of a rose flower plant will produce a new rose flower plant.
01:44Non-living things are those that do not grow, do not move, do not eat, do not reproduce, or have no senses.
02:00Non-living things can be natural or man-made.
02:06Natural non-living things are things that exist in nature and man has not made them.
02:15Like stones, water, soil, mountain, river, clouds, rainbow.
02:26All these are non-living things. Books, pens, pencils, houses, cars, pillars, lights, colors, clothes.
02:46All these things are man-made non-living things.
02:52Living things. We all are living things. You, your friends, your mom, your pets are examples of living things.
03:07Even all the plants are living organisms.
03:12Now let's learn some characteristics of living things.
03:17All living organisms need food to obtain energy, to grow, and to stay healthy.
03:28You are a living thing.
03:32Do you have food?
03:35Yes, you have food, water, milk, and so many things.
03:43You can't stay healthy if you skip your food.
03:47All the animals, birds, do they have food?
03:54Yes, they all have food.
03:56We give food to our pets, birds too eat food, and fish too eat food.
04:06None of them can stay healthy without food.
04:11Most of the living organisms can move like we can walk, run, and go anywhere.
04:19Our pets are living things. Can they move?
04:23Yes, they can move.
04:27Okay, are the plants living organisms?
04:32Yes, plants are living organisms.
04:36Can they move?
04:38No, they can't move from one place to another.
04:43But they can move water inside them from one part to another.
04:49Like they take in water from their roots and can move that water from roots to the top of the tree.
04:59To each and every leaf of the tree.
05:04Here's another example of movement in plants.
05:08In sunflower plants, flowers move with the direction of the sun.
05:14Its flowers always face towards the sun.
05:19So all living things can move their body or can move things inside them.
05:27Like plants can't move their body, but they can move things inside them.
05:35They can move water and minerals from one part of the plant to the other part of the plant.
05:43And some plants can move their body too, to some extent.
05:50Like sunflower, they move with the direction of the sun.
06:01It's another important feature of all living things.
06:06Let's breathe.
06:08Breathe in, breathe out.
06:12Breathe in, breathe out.
06:16Yes, this is breathing.
06:20And all living things breathe.
06:23All animals take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide in the air.
06:32And plants.
06:34Plants take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen.
06:43This is another important feature of all living things.
06:48Kids, our body can't use all the food we have or drink.
06:54So some part which is not used by our body is excreted out in the form of urine and sweat.
07:04All living things need to remove waste from their bodies.
07:10Growth. All living things grow.
07:14Kids, you were very small babies.
07:18And now you are bigger.
07:21All living things grow.
07:24Your pets grow, don't they?
07:27Yes, they grow bigger with time.
07:30Your plants grow bigger with time too.
07:35So every living thing grows.
07:38Sensitivity.
07:40Kids, do you feel cold when it snows outside?
07:45Yes, we feel cold when it's cold outside.
07:50And do you feel hot in the summers when the sun shines bright?
07:56Yes, we feel hot.
07:58And if someone hits us, we feel hurt.
08:03So, this is sensitivity.
08:07All living things are sensitive to heat, cold, touch, light, and sound.
08:17Reproduction.
08:19All living things produce young ones of their own kind.
08:24Like?
08:26Humans make babies.
08:29Cats produce kittens.
08:32Cows produce calves.
08:35And plants give seeds that grow into new plants.
08:40So kids, these are the features of living things.
08:45Now, let's learn about non-living things.
08:48Non-living things do not possess the characteristics of living things.
08:54That is, they cannot move.
08:57They do not breathe.
08:59They do not eat, and they do not reproduce.
09:03Let's see some examples.
09:07Here is your pencil.
09:10Does it move on its own?
09:13No.
09:15Does it eat?
09:16No.
09:18Does it eat something?
09:20No.
09:22Does it drink?
09:24No.
09:26Does it breathe?
09:28No.
09:30Does it reproduce?
09:32That is, does it produce a new pencil?
09:35No.
09:37So your pencil is an example of a non-living thing.
09:41Now let's see some examples of non-living things
09:45that also have a few characteristics of living things.
09:50Like?
09:52Vehicles can move.
09:54They need fuel for energy.
09:57But they are not living things,
10:00as they cannot breathe.
10:02They cannot reproduce.
10:05So vehicles are non-living things.
10:09Now let's see.
10:11Is a parrot a living thing?
10:14Can a parrot move?
10:17Yes.
10:19It can fly.
10:21Do parrots eat?
10:23Yes.
10:25Parrot eats.
10:28Do parrots reproduce?
10:31Yes.
10:33Parrots give birth to new young ones.
10:35So parrots are living things.
10:38So kids, today we learned what are living and non-living things.
10:44And we learned characteristics of living and non-living things.
10:49Now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
10:53Bye-bye.
