00:00Can you believe I found this at an estate sale?
00:02Do you like estate sales? I love estate sales.
00:04I'm just so nosy, I just want to rummage through your things.
00:06Tell me everything about you.
00:08Anyway, this is a solid wood chest of drawers.
00:10And that art deco veneer is gorgeous.
00:12She's just missing a little pizzazz, a little sparkle.
00:14And y'all, don't let your children touch your solid wood furniture.
00:16I don't even want your unborn children thinking about putting their grubby hands on it.
00:20Because this piece is beautiful. This piece is nice.
00:22And I just have a feeling that this is the result of some ungrateful children.
00:25I would know, I once was one.
00:27Let's get this hardware off and see what we're dealing with.
00:29I thought this hardware was beautiful, but it was missing some of the posts.
00:32That's going to be a problem for later, Amanda.
00:34We just need to get it off right now so we can wash her up.
00:36Oh, hello.
00:37I'm using a mixture of soap and water and giving her a good scrub-a-dub-dub.
00:40We gotta remove all those greasy fingerprints.
00:42Sturdy water check.
00:44I decided to strip the varnish off of the drawers because the veneer was kind of thin.
00:47And I probably would have cried if I sanded it off.
00:49And I'm aware that I completely missed filming myself do this.
00:51But I'm including it anyway because if it's taking up storage in my phone, it's going in the video.
00:55I don't take storage for granted, I already pay Apple enough.
00:57I brushed it on, let it sit for 15 minutes, and then I scooped the goop.
01:00Was this part necessary? Not really, no, because the veneer was way thicker than I thought it was.
01:03But anyway, I still did this part, so I'm showing it.
01:05After I wiped up the waxy remnants with some mineral spirits, I started sanding with 220 grit.
01:09I mean, look at that veneer under the varnish.
01:11That horrible stain was keeping this baby girl from being herself.
01:14Be free, my little butterfly, be free.
01:16My original plan for this piece was to strip down all the flat surfaces to bare wood.
01:20And then paint the intricate wooden detail on the front to give it a little pop of color.
01:23But then I started sanding, and then I didn't stop. I just kept sanding.
01:27And sanding, and sanding some more, and sanding some more.
01:31I don't know what kind of emotional turmoil I was in to do this to myself, but I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.
01:36Look at my little goggles.
01:37Now I just need a pool so I can go play mermaids.
01:39You wanna play mermaids with me?
01:40No, but for real, that dust was getting all up in my eyeballs.
01:42I just couldn't. I could not.
01:44Thank God I got my Anita 3x4.
01:46Because this is solid wood, I tacked this piece with 80 grit just to pull up some of that varnish.
01:50Then I went over it with 150 grit, 180, and then 220 to smooth.
01:54Don't be skipping grits out here.
01:55I'm not trying to have any swirl marks. Uh-uh. Not today. Not after all this work.
01:59I wanted this piece like a baby's bottom.
02:01Smooth.
02:03Yeah, this part sucked. This part really sucked.
02:06I believe I can fly. I believe I can touch the sky. It doesn't matter every night.
02:14I wasn't taking any risks when it came to this top detailing.
02:17So I poured like a gallon of stripper on it, and we just went at it.
02:20I got my brass bristle brush in my will to live, and we're scrubbing to the gals. Come on.
02:23What? What? I don't even know what that means.
02:25Um, but we scrubbed a lot. There was a lot of scrubbing.
02:28You wanna hear what that sounds like in 10x? Of course you do.
02:33The top veneer was just slightly pulling up, so dad's taking a razor so he can enlarge the space to get some glue up underneath it.
02:39Stick that syringe up in there and glue it down, baby.
02:41Not surprisingly, it was a little tough to get all the sanding dust out of these crevasses.
02:46So I took a dental pick, and we are just gently scraping to get any more sanding dust out.
02:50We don't want our finish crusty-dusty.
02:52I was a little worried that when I sealed it, it would darken back up, so I decided to go with a white wash on top.
02:57I took some Carrington Beige by Benjamin Moore, added some water, brushed it on, and then wiped it back.
03:01You don't want your piece wet.
03:02And then once it was all done, I hated it.
03:04Turns out this baby didn't wanna be as bright as I thought she did.
03:07We're gonna mute her back down a little bit with some Golden Oak Stain.
03:09I'm using it more as a glaze, so I brushed it on with a foam brush and wiped it immediately back with a microfiber rag.
03:14I know what you're thinking right now.
03:15You're thinking, wow, that Lightwood is beautiful.
03:18Lightwood's in.
03:19I love Lightwood.
03:20Why are you making that Lightwood dark?
03:21Baby girl, I hear you.
03:22Trust me in my heart.
03:23I know.
03:24You're just gonna have to trust me on this one.
03:26I took every precaution I could to make sure that no stain got stuck on the inside of this detailing.
03:30We got paper towels.
03:31We got rags.
03:32We got Q-tips.
03:33Because if you've ever forgotten to wipe back excess oil-based stain, you know.
03:35You're left with a sticky mess, and we do not have the time for that.
03:38Okay, let's stain these drawers.
03:39Yeah, I hate it.
03:41I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.
03:43That looks like trash.
03:44That looks so bad.
03:46It looks so ugly.
03:48We're redoing the drawers.
03:49Third time's the charm, am I right?
03:51Not in this case.
03:52But we'll get to that later.
03:53I sanded off all the stain in the white wash.
03:55The white wash wasn't it.
03:56It just wasn't it.
03:57But that white wash also decided to be a stubborn little mmm and get stuck in all the grooves.
04:00So I had to use some steel wool and stripper and scrub, scrub, scrub to get it out of the pores.
04:04Washed that off with mineral spirits and then stained it again.
04:06This time we went with all natural.
04:08Long story short, we had some issues with the top coat.
04:10I had to do that twice.
04:11Ha, fun.
04:12Do you remember those missing posts from the handles?
04:14Dad made a look-alike with wood.
04:15He's brilliant people.
04:16A whole lot beautiful.
04:18She's screaming, I'm coming out.
04:20I want the world to know.
04:23Gotta let it show.
04:25The details, look at the details.
04:27So I did run into a few speed bumps.
04:28But in the end she is giving.
04:30I asked Dad what we should list this for on Facebook Marketplace.
04:32He said $6.50, I'm going with it.
04:34And if no one wants to pay that, fine, I'll keep it.
04:36Joke's on you.
04:37See you on the next furniture flip.
