00:00This isn't going well, is it?
00:02Well, that depends on who you ask.
00:04Yeah, if you're an enraged parent with a misguided agenda, it's going great.
00:08Thanks. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, Susan,
00:11but I don't recall the Board of Ed passing any rule that allows a lunatic
00:16to start handing out death sentences just because one of our kids acted like a kid.
00:21Please, please, please.
00:24As I've mentioned, I strongly urge Principal Green
00:29to reconsider his decision.
00:32But as much as I wish it weren't so,
00:35Principal Green has final say in all Capeside High disciplinary matters.
00:42Dr. Fulding, Dr. Fulding, may I?
00:45Yes, please, please. Mr. Coffey.
00:48You consider yourself a member of this community?
00:50Yes.
00:51Are you going to let the personal prejudices of an outsider ruin my son's future?
00:57I can't take this anymore. I have to say something.
01:01This is ridiculous. This whole thing has been blown out of proportion.
01:05This is a PTA meeting, young lady, not a pep rally.
01:10Now, you'll have your seat, please.
01:12Well, isn't anyone going to defend Principal Green for everything that he's done?
01:16Ms. Potter, our son tells me that you're the one whose mural was destroyed.
01:21This has nothing to do with me, okay?
01:23You're exactly right.
01:24What it has to do with is the scare tactics of a man whose extremism and notions of justice
01:32are better suited for an urban war zone than our civilized world.
01:38You did not just say what that means.
01:40What I'm saying is that if this educator were doing his job in any capacity,
01:47none of us would have to be here tonight.
01:50You were doing your job as a parent, Mr. Caulfield.
01:53Maybe your son would still be in school right now.
01:55He has a file in the guidance office over who's thick.
02:03Principal Green is a fair man.
02:05I'm sure he seems that way to you, dear, and to maybe some of the other students
02:11whose families don't embrace the values that we as a community get off attacking our family.
02:19I don't know anything about her family.
02:21People, that's enough.
02:28As of this Friday at 3 o'clock, if Principal Green has not reduced Matt Caulfield's expulsion
02:35to a more reasonable sentence, I will ask him to tender his resignation.
02:41This is ridiculous.
02:46Did what I think just happened happen?
02:48The building's going to railroad Green into changing its ruling.
02:51Either that or out of town.
02:59My heart is in my hands.
03:03My head is in the clouds.
03:08My feet have left the ground.
03:11My life is churning around and around.
03:16Every voice inside my head is telling me to run like metal.
03:25Bows and arrows, stars and sunsets.
03:29Hey, hey, hey, yeah.
03:31Hey, hey, hey, yeah.
03:34Every heartbeat, every kiss just makes me wonder
03:40what all this is.
03:42Suits of armor, parts and barrels.
03:46Hey, hey, hey, yeah.
03:52He'll be expecting Green's resignation.
03:55For now, this is Sherry Eisler of WKWB reporting from downtown Capeside.
04:03Oh, man.
04:08Hello, Sherry.
04:10Miss Leary. I mean, Gail. It's great to see you.
04:14You look terrific. So do you.
04:16Hey, congratulations on making field reporter.
04:19It's a long way from the shy intern that I hired.
04:22Well, I could say I owe it all to you.
04:24The new generation of female reporters would be nowhere
04:27without veteran trailblazers like yourself.
04:32So, what's your story?
04:34You know you were inside there, didn't you, C?
04:36I saw a bunch of out-of-control parents, which for this town is hardly news.
04:40Maybe, but what about the principal expelling a kid for the rest of the year?
04:44That sounds like a real wacko to me.
04:46Come on, Sherry. We gotta move.
04:48We gotta get going. Got a deadline to make.
04:51You remember those days.
04:54It was great seeing you, Gail.
04:58You too, Sherry.
05:01I mean, what happened in there was so unjust.
05:03And not to mention personally demoralizing.
05:05You know how this system works, Joe.
05:08Convicts, mental defectives, and people under the age of 18
05:11are routinely denied the chance to participate in decisions that affect their everyday lives.
05:17And the problem is that the squeak you look, it's all the grease.
05:20I mean, well, these idiots rant and rave about low test scores.
05:25I mean, the people who are perfectly happy with the way things are
05:27just sit back and mind their own business.
05:29True, happy, satisfied people rarely attend emergency PTA meetings.
05:33And teenagers, I mean, come on.
05:35They'd have to be coaxed and prodded before they'd actually sit down on their Playstations,
05:38turn off TRL, and do something about something.
05:41You said it, sister.
05:43So who's gonna rally the troops?
05:47Obviously nobody.
05:49You could.
05:51Yeah, Joey Potter against the system.
05:54What am I gonna do, paint another mural?
05:56Uh-oh.
05:58I don't even know why I bothered to go.
06:00I mean, it's a total waste of time.
06:02There were barely any students there, and I got two sentences out before I was attacked.
06:06Joey, you can't just expect people to rally around a cause that doesn't exist.
06:11They need leadership. They need...
06:13What's that Pacey said?
06:15Pacey?
06:17What kind of a name is Pacey?
06:19I think you're gonna want to see this.
06:20I'm on the phone.
06:21No, really, I think you're gonna want to see this.
06:25Sorry, hold on, Angie.
06:27Concerned parents demanded actions and answers tonight from Capeside school superintendent Byron Fielding.
06:34The uproar started when a high school girl painted a mural that was intended to bring unity.
06:40Instead, all it brought was discord,
06:44and the potential resignation of a high school principal under siege.
06:49Howard Green has thus far refused to comment publicly on his controversial decision to expel Matt Caulfield,
06:58a senior accused of vandalizing a so-called unity mural,
07:03and fighting with another boy who took exception to the prank.
07:07The other boy was let off with only community service,
07:11leading some in this community to question Green's motives
07:15and wonder whether he's let some kind of personal agenda affect his judgment.
07:22Joey Potter, the girl who painted the mural, was present at tonight's meeting
07:27and summed it up best when she said this about Caulfield's harsh punishment.
07:32This is ridiculous. This whole thing has been blown out of proportion.
07:35I never said that.
07:37We believe you, sis.
07:40I mean, I said it, but not in that context.
07:43This isn't fair.
07:45No one is ever going to give me the chance to say everything that I want to say.
07:49You're right, they won't.
07:51Not unless you stand up and demand to be heard.
07:54Show them you won't be ignored.
07:56What are you suggesting?
08:01Well, Norma Rae, looks like you took my advice after all.
08:04And what advice was that?
08:06This meeting, rallying the troops?
08:08I have to say, this is a big step forward for you.
08:11I mean, I'm known as the Capeside Crusader,
08:13far and wide breaking down sexual stereotypes, eradicating rogue teachers,
08:17but you, you're definitely more of the rebel without the cause type.
08:21So look, I just wanted to say, don't hesitate to ask for any help that you might need.
08:27Seeing as this whole thing was my idea in the first place.
08:30You are encouraging, yes, Pacey, but this meeting was hardly your idea.
08:35If that's the way you want to play it, it's fine with me.
08:37If you want to pretend like you devised this whole call to action...
08:39I didn't!
08:43I'm all out.
08:45Me too.
08:48Oh, that's right, you guys have never met.
08:51Pacey, this is A.J.
08:53A.J., this is Pacey.
08:54Right, the one with the peculiar name.
08:56How you doing?
08:58A.J. came down to help us rally up the troops.
09:01Yeah, give Capeside a small taste of some tried-and-true college protest action.
09:07Quick, Green's coming inside, and you guys gotta see this.
09:11Green money! Green money!
09:14Bring us to your streets! Green money...
09:18Cream sugar, baby.
09:20Green sugar, green sugar...
09:22Hey, son, let us go.
09:24Get behind me.
09:35I'll show you!
09:38Horse damnit!
09:39Greensville is ready for the parade!
09:41Greensville is ready for the parade!
09:44Greensville is ready for the parade!
09:46Greensville is ready for the parade!
09:54Concerned parents showed up the Capeside High today
09:57to express their outrage at a principal
10:00who many think has gone too far.
10:03Thanks for helping out tonight, honey.
10:05You make me think Dad is the one who dentured me to this servitude.
10:11Not a moment too soon. I must say, this restaurant stuff, it's a lot more work than I expected.
10:18I'm sorry I couldn't be any sooner.
10:21What happened with that meeting at Joey's tonight?
10:24I haven't seen her. She's totally confident. Totally inspired.
10:31You're proud of her?
10:33Yeah. How could I not be? She's finally standing up for herself and fighting back the way always knew she could.
10:41Really?
10:45Can't help but feel part of that.
10:48She's organizing an action tomorrow outside of the superintendent's office.
10:52Well, she's got a tough road in front of her. Especially with that spokesmodel-turned-journalist misrepresenting her story.
11:01You know what kills me is to see an important story done badly simply because the person covering it has no idea how to decipher truth from popular opinion.
11:11Sounds like you'll miss it.
11:14Yeah, I'd be lying if I said I didn't, but hey, I got this place now. Onward and upward.
11:22What if you tried to tell the real story about what's going on?
11:32Relive my glory days as a field reporter?
11:36All you would need to get back in the game is a camera.
11:39And a crew.
11:41One of these days, digital video crew is one person.
11:44And just who would my one person be?
11:47You do have one indentured servant at your disposal.
11:55I don't know, honey. You know, even if we did this and we did it right, there's no promise that the station would run it.
12:02They've made it clear many times over that my services are past their prime.
12:07Well, we're not doing it for the station.
12:10We're doing it for you.
12:13And for Principal Green.
12:15And for Joey.
12:18We barely have enough people to fill the softball team, let alone change the world.
12:22Home wasn't built in a day, Joey.
12:24Thanks for doing this. Hot coffee is great when we're out.
12:28No problem.
12:30Where's Joe?
12:32She's getting ready for her close-up.
12:35She's great, isn't she?
12:37Born leader.
12:40Oh, she's a preacher, all right.
12:43...series of questions about the nature of the protest and where the movement came from.
12:48And then I think that we should concentrate on...
12:50Dale, what's this?
12:52I'm doing a story on the Green situation.
12:54For cable? I don't know.
12:56Truth be told, I was thinking about submitting it to Roger at the station.
13:00Hmm. Good luck with that.
13:03Joey, I would love to get a follow-up interview with you.
13:06Frosted blonde dreams, Barbie.
13:15You don't think I was too hard on him?
13:17He's handed our right to me.
13:32What is it?
13:34Superintendent Fielding wants to see you.
13:37Me?
13:39First signs of resistance falling.
13:42Why don't I get that feeling?
13:44Because Fielding's an unscrupulous, ineffectual jerk who cares more about job security than about what anybody out here thinks.
13:51He's only going to threaten you, Joe.
13:54I don't think you should go in there.
13:58What do you think?
14:01I'd go.
14:16This is Josephine Potter, correct?
14:19Yes.
14:21Have a seat.
14:26I assume you know who I am?
14:29The man who shows up for football games on graduation.
14:33I appreciate a sense of humor.
14:35Though I prefer to think of my involvement in your life as a touch more personal than that.
14:42I hear you're responsible for that dissonant clamoring outside.
14:47Is that true?
14:49Well, parents can pick at a school, students can pick at a superintendent's office.
14:54Fair enough.
14:56And just what is it you intend to accomplish with this First Amendment display?
15:01Well, it's our belief that Principal Green was right in expelling Matt Caulfield and he shouldn't be forced into changing his ruling simply because...
15:10No enforcing him.
15:13Pardon me, Dr. Fielding, but you threatened to ask for his resignation.
15:18That wasn't a threat.
15:20That was a direct request.
15:24As a representative of the student body, I'm telling you what is happening to Principal Green is wrong.
15:29As far as I know, all you represent is that meager handful of students out there right now, and that's it.
15:38Well, there's more of us.
15:40Oh, really?
15:41Yeah, a lot more.
15:43In fact, we have a student signed petition with 300 signatures.
15:49300?
15:51Mm-hmm.
15:52And there's going to be a rally tomorrow night.
15:54I mean, if you think the crowd last night was vocal, I mean, you just wait until tomorrow.
15:58I didn't know about this.
16:02Make no mistake, Dr. Fielding, there's a voice that doesn't agree with what's happening here, and that voice will be heard.
16:08I'm all ears.
16:11Now, I suggest that you and your friends hurry back to school before that principal you love so dearly has to serve you with detention or cut in class.
16:22I was cut in class.
16:26I'm not sick with a cold.
16:37Johnson, this is Larry.
16:40What do I owe the late afternoon honor?
16:42For your interview.
16:44Interview? What interview?
16:46For the story that I'm hoping to run on Channel 3 about the situation in the community as a result of Matt Caulfield's expulsion.
16:54I talked to Nikki this afternoon. She said it was okay.
16:57I just wanted you to have an opportunity to speak for everyone to know your side of the story.
17:04I know my side of the story. That's all that matters.
17:07I'm sorry, but my daughter misinformed you.
17:09For what it's worth, people severely misinterpreted you in this entire situation. Are you sure you don't want a chance to explain your actions?
17:18It's not my job to prove to people that I'm a fair and decent man.
17:22If they don't know that by now, some soundbite on a television show is not going to help.
17:28When you see a good fight, get in it.
17:31Dr. King's words, but your lesson to me.
17:35This is not a good fight, Nikki.
17:37The more I try to prove myself, the more I empower this insane notion that I'm an enraged man on a bigoted tirade.
17:48I'm sorry, but I can't grant you the interview.
17:52Have a nice day.
17:58I'm just saying it might have been nice to have a little heads up before you invented a petition with over 300 signatures.
18:04But I don't even think we have 300 students at our school.
18:06She had to bluff. How else was she going to get the guys' respect?
18:09Right. Look, it'll be fine, Pacey. Just tell us what we're doing to get people to come to the rally.
18:14Well, that bluff's going to be a little bit harder to pull off.
18:16I mean, a petition is easy enough to fake.
18:18You just convince kids that you're campaigning for extra chocolate milk days at the cafeteria.
18:22But for a rally, you've got to produce actual bodies.
18:25Those are problems. We need solutions.
18:27All right, which we have.
18:28See, Pacey here said, think internet.
18:30So Jack is right now putting an announcement out on the Capeside website, and Andy is getting word out in no fashion.
18:37Okay, well, if you don't come, then you can forget about me participating when it comes to putting all those little names and faces together in the yearbook, okay?
18:45Great.
18:48Personal touch is always nice when it comes to black men.
18:53Hello? Hello?
18:55Oh, uh, no, hold on one second.
18:57Oh, hold on one second.
18:58Betsy!
19:04Hey, Joey.
19:06We designed a new flag, to your approval, of course.
19:10Great.
19:12Good, because I already ordered 500 copies.
19:15How are we going to pay for that?
19:16Uh, we're not.
19:17Actually, Pacey managed to convince a simple-minded coffee shop owner to run them for free.
19:23He did?
19:25Yes, he did.
19:28Okay.
19:30Okay, attention, everyone.
19:33Look, I know you're all working very hard, and we're only 20 people right now, but by tomorrow night we have to be 200 at least, so keep up the hard work.
19:42We got many miles to go before we can sleep.
19:46Great job.
19:52Are you sure you're going to do this for me?
19:53Yeah, and I can't believe I'm doing it now.
19:58Well, I believe it because it's happening.
20:03Thanks to you.
20:05You're the one that convinced me to do it in the first place.
20:09I came all the way down here.
20:11I couldn't have done it without you.
20:23Hey.
20:29You okay?
20:32Yeah.
20:34Yeah, I think I'm just gonna hang some of these sliders up.
20:40Okay, I just got a phone call.
20:43What is it?
20:44Some concerned citizen wanted me to know that letting high school students use my place of business as their point of attack against the system is not the best way to keep my business afloat.
20:55I don't get it.
20:57You don't, do you?
20:59Never do.
21:00Hey, Bessie, it was probably just a stupid little prank, and I wouldn't be surprised if Matt Caulfield did it himself.
21:15Bess, relax. I'm sure it's no big deal.
21:18What if it wasn't a prank?
21:20We can't afford to antagonize the people who hold the mortgage on this house.
21:24Or at least Bodie and I can't. We'll still be living here when you go to college.
21:27So I'm just supposed to sit around and wait patiently until I get out of this town? I'm not allowed to criticize it or even try to change it in any way?
21:35I didn't say that.
21:37Look, I can't stop now, Bessie. Is that what you want me to do?
21:40Jo, Jo, no one's asking you to stop. I think Bessie just wants you to be realistic about the situation.
21:46I am being realistic.
21:48Spending a lot of time and effort defending a man who won't even defend himself. How is that realistic?
21:53He shouldn't have to defend himself. He didn't do anything wrong.
21:55And you're sure of that? You're sure this kid doesn't deserve another chance?
21:58Of course I am. Everyone at school knows that Capeside High is a much better place without Matt Caulfield. The students know it and the teachers know it.
22:05And so all these parents who are so up in arms, they're just wrong?
22:08Yes. You weren't at that meeting. You don't know what Mr. Caulfield said, okay?
22:13He's got his own personal agenda and I'm not just talking about saving his son's ass.
22:17What do you mean?
22:18She means all these concerned citizens wouldn't be fighting this decision so hard if Principal Green were white.
22:26They would still be upset.
22:30Upset, yeah. And they might try and take action about it, but not like this.
22:34It wouldn't be this level of anger and hostility and misunderstanding.
22:38And they certainly wouldn't try and threaten the family of some teenage girl trying to speak her mind.
22:44I give up.
22:45Joe, you want to change the world from our living room? Fine. Whatever.
23:05Sorry.
23:08It's okay.
23:09It's okay.
23:11Too bad you're not a paying guest. This scene would have been even more heinously awkward.
23:17Look, this is probably not the best time to say this, but...
23:24You're leaving?
23:26Yeah, I figured since I've alienated you from your sister and completely undermined the financial viability of your family business, my work here is done.
23:36You can't leave. I mean, we just started.
23:40I could give you another room, maybe something without an article wallpaper.
23:45No, no. There we go.
23:47I've got papers to write. Actually, papers to grade.
23:53Listen, Joe. You think you need me when you get home.
23:57You're surrounded by a lot of people who believe in you. Good people. Smart people.
24:03I mean, even Pacey turned out to be not such a bad guy.
24:09What gave you that idea?
24:13I'm an excellent judge of character. I found you, didn't I?
24:27Pacey, I think you got that one covered. The hurricane won't take it down.
24:35You know, it might make you feel better if you talk about it.
24:37Talk about what?
24:39About what's bothering you.
24:42Don't bother me.
24:44Fine. Fine.
24:47I'm fine.
24:50Okay, so I do kind of have a problem.
24:53Yeah, I noticed.
24:56It's that obvious, huh?
24:58Yeah, it's become recent.
24:59Do you think it would be at all possible to, I don't know, pretend like it wasn't that obvious?
25:05Well, only if we pretend to have a conversation about it.
25:12You really want to make me do that?
25:18Okay.
25:21Okay.
25:23Okay.
25:26Okay.
25:29Let's just say for the sake of argument that I had gotten myself into an impossible situation.
25:36That I had, hypothetically speaking, fallen for, or was in the process of falling for, the worst possible person that I could ever fall for.
25:48What would you tell me to do?
25:53I guess I would tell you that possible situations are only made better by doing something about them.
26:01So I should just go and declare myself to her so that she could laugh in my face?
26:06That's a great idea.
26:08How do you know that's how she'd react?
26:10Well, I have it on pretty good authority that my rough charms don't really register on her rarefied romantic palate.
26:16I mean, let's face it, I got ducky written all over me.
26:20Ducky?
26:21Ducky.
26:23Oh, Ringwald's best friend from Pretty in Pink? The guy who definitely does not get the girl?
26:27Yes, but he makes the girl feel good about herself. He does. He stands by her through innumerable fashion emergencies.
26:34He even humiliates himself by lip syncing in a public place and he takes her to the prom.
26:39Where she promptly dumps him for another guy.
26:42Alright, the question is, Pace, this girl that you have developed impossible feelings for,
26:52are you going to stand by her in a very ducky-like fashion,
26:57or are you going to let hurt feelings and pride prevent you from being the friend that you so innocently purport yourself to be?
27:03I guess it just hurts, that's all.
27:06Well, that just means that it doesn't pretend anymore.
27:33Mom, why are we doing this? If we won't talk, why are we interviewing Fielding?
27:38Because there's two sides to every story, and it's not our job to editorialize.
27:44I'm sorry, but it's my editorial opinion that the world should turn out for the side.
27:48Honey, if I didn't do this interview, I'd be just like Sherry, picking the news that I want to tell.
27:55Well, why shouldn't you? Everyone else does these days.
27:57No, not the best journalists. The best ones just ask the right questions.
28:01That's the only way that the truth can serve us.
28:08Dr. Fielding will see you now.
28:11What we're asking Principal Green to do is not an unreasonable request.
28:17Simply readmit one student who may have caused a little trouble here or there.
28:23Yes, but most of Matt Caulfield's fellow students side with Principal Green on this one.
28:28Green could offer to shorten the school day by 15 minutes. They'd follow him anywhere.
28:34They can make a lot of noise, though. This rally, for instance.
28:40They can rally all night for all the good it's going to do them.
28:45Howard Green has until Friday at 3 o'clock to rescind his ruling,
28:49or it's going to be his last day at Capeside.
28:53It would seem to me that firing Principal Green is as extreme as him choosing to expel Matt Caulfield.
29:01Now, are you really sure that firing their principal is what's best for the students?
29:07It's what's best for this community.
29:11Ah, and that's who you're responsible to, the community.
29:15Ultimately, yes.
29:18Could I ask you to read something for me, sir?
29:23Of course.
29:25Could you please read line item number one on that page?
29:29Uh, I hereby declare to above all else protect and serve the welfare of each student in this district to the best of my ability.
29:43My ability.
29:47What is this?
29:49A contract for Capeside's superintendent of schools.
29:53The one which states what he's hired to do.
29:56In fact, that is your signature on the bottom of that page, Dr. Fielding, is it not?
30:02Yes, yes it is.
30:04So what you're holding is a contract, which you've signed,
30:07which states that your number one priority should be to these students and their welfare.
30:13In fact, it doesn't say anything about the community anywhere in that contract, sir.
30:19Correct.
30:21Listen to viewers at an end.
30:38Nikki?
30:44Can a concerned father answer where his daughter's going in such a hurry?
30:48He can, but he's not going to like the answer.
30:53Joey's rally.
30:55You could come with me, you know.
30:57You already know my position on that.
30:59I'm not sure I know your position on anything anymore.
31:02You spend so much time trying to protect how you're seen for fear that they're going to paint you as some angry man.
31:09I am angry.
31:12And why shouldn't I be?
31:16Nikki, do you have any idea how much it hurts to know that I did the right thing?
31:23And I'm doing the right thing.
31:26And because of someone's deep-seated fears, it's not working.
31:30I don't want to leave these kids, and I don't want to leave this town, and I certainly don't want to put you through this.
31:38So yes, I am angry.
31:43But if I show men like Robert Caulfield one flash of this anger, they will use it against me.
31:50The people tonight are like that.
31:52They're on your side.
31:54They support you.
31:56They're fighting for you, for us.
31:57And they need to know that win or lose, you support them.
32:00So you support them.
32:01Well, I'd say that Paisley did a pretty impressive job of getting the word out to the people.
32:31Don't you think?
32:33Yeah.
32:35But speaking of Paisley, I haven't seen or heard from him all day.
32:38Testing, testing, one, two, testing, unos, dos, okay.
32:44As you can see, we're not having any technical difficulties.
32:47So I'd like to turn it over to the lady who's responsible for gathering us all here tonight.
32:52Let's give her a nice warm round of applause, shall we?
32:55Without further ado, Miss Julie Potter.
32:56Julie Potter.
33:10Well, everyone's been coming up to me in the last week, asking me why I'm doing this.
33:19Even people in my family.
33:21I've certainly asked myself plenty of times.
33:23And it's not because Matt Caulfield trashed my extracurricular art project and I've sworn eternal vengeance against him.
33:33It's because some people in our town seem to think that our principal doesn't know what's best for us.
33:39That he's some sort of an outsider.
33:41But how can he be an outsider when he's been there walking the halls of our school with us every day since September?
33:47When he's taken the time to get to know us, to figure out our talents, whether they be filmmaking or student government or painting,
33:55and supported and encouraged all of us who don't even know yet what our talents are.
34:00How can he be an outsider when he's been there with us every day, trying to make our lives better?
34:09I thought that's what we could do tonight.
34:13Talk about how Principal Green has made our lives a lot better.
34:24Okay, no hands.
34:27Starting to feel like I'm back in Mr. Peterson's English class.
34:35It's better him.
34:38Andy.
34:39Andy.
34:40Well, the two most important things that I learned from Principal Green were that mistakes and setbacks aren't necessarily irreversible.
34:50And if you can't learn from yourself, then you can't learn from anybody.
34:54And he doesn't treat us like children even when we act like them.
34:57He treats us with respect and listens to what we have to say.
35:01We've been trying to form this committee of students.
35:03I don't really know very many of you.
35:06I'm the new kid in all.
35:09But what I do know about you is what my father tells me at home over dinner, while we're watching TV, when we're doing the dishes.
35:20Because that's what he talks about.
35:23That's all he talks about.
35:26His students.
35:29His school.
35:39I'm not free to lose my eyes to see.
35:47I'm not where I should be.
35:55I know.
35:59I had mixed feelings about coming here this evening.
36:04But after sitting at home and thinking about some of the things my daughter said earlier,
36:09it was clear that I needed to come.
36:13She said, Dad, those people are on your side.
36:18They're fighting for you.
36:21And so I wanted to come and to say thank you for your support.
36:28Now, neither myself nor Dr. Fielding seem to be willing to budge on this particular issue.
36:34And so it looks like I'll be leaving.
36:37But as I look around this evening, I'm motivated.
36:45Because I see a room full of people who have chosen to harness their inner power as individuals.
36:54But regardless of the outcome of this situation, know that I thank you.
37:03All of you.
37:05All of you.
37:35So you did it.
37:46You rallied to a certain someone's side in a very ducky-like manner.
37:50Yeah, mission accomplished.
37:53How do you feel?
37:55To be honest, I feel like dog meat.
37:59She didn't even thank me.
38:02She will. One day.
38:06How can you be so sure?
38:08Because every dog has its day.
38:11Just ask Henry.
38:31Ready to go?
38:33Whenever you are.
38:35Think she'll let us in the house?
38:37Bessie? If she doesn't, we'll sleep in the car.
38:42Want to drive?
38:44Stick shift? No, thanks. I think I've had enough.
38:51The challenge is this week.
38:53Packing down from a challenge?
38:55Doesn't sound like the Joey Putter I know.
38:57Certainly wasn't the one in front of all those people tonight.
39:01You saw?
39:03Well, Alexander here, he just insisted on coming.
39:07See, he's extremely proud of his Aunt Joey.
39:11Really.
39:13When you're not around, he goes on and on about how talented you are.
39:19And how smart.
39:21And how brave.
39:27You know, on second thought, maybe I will drive us home.
39:52Come in.
39:58Oh, Miss Potter.
40:01You haven't been in my office in a long time.
40:04You haven't gotten yourself in trouble, I hope.
40:12You know, you have a few minutes. You could still change your mind.
40:17Is that what you want?
40:20No, I...
40:23Maybe I...
40:24Maybe I...
40:28I don't know.
40:30Why is that?
40:33I know that you're doing the right thing, it's just...
40:40I can't help but feeling that maybe I...
40:47I failed you.
40:52We...
40:54We couldn't stop them.
40:58They weren't loud enough or...
41:03Or strong enough.
41:09And I'm really sorry.
41:15Joey.
41:18Look at me.
41:20Look at me.
41:25In all my years in education, I have never felt more successful than I feel right now.
41:35Do you understand that?
41:42Thank you for fighting for me.
41:44You're welcome.
41:53You're welcome.
41:57I guess it's time to go home.
42:01Up to you.
42:02I love you.
42:13I'll see you, Mr. Kramer.
42:15See you, Joey.
42:32I love you.
43:03In the garden, the future will unfold.
43:11Thank God for the teachers of our children, so the garden can grow.
43:26Tell everyone that I can be down there in less than an hour.
43:30Okay.
43:32I'll see you then.
43:35That sounds like distinctly good news.
43:39They're gonna run it.
43:41Our story tonight.
43:42They want me to race down now and tape an intro at the station.
43:45Oh, that's terrific.
43:47Oh, and that's not all.
43:48One of the executive producers asked me if I would be interested in doing a few other special reports in the upcoming months.
43:56Oh, that's great.
43:57What did you tell him?
43:59I told him I'd get back to him in about 20 years if and when I retire from the restaurant business.
44:07You're kidding.
44:09I thought this is what you wanted.
44:12No, I think what I wanted was just my chance to say no.
44:18To leave on my own terms.
44:21To start fresh with no regrets.
44:24And I can do that now because of you.
44:28What did I do?
44:30What you always do.
44:31You inspired me, honey.
44:32The way that you inspire everybody.
44:35You see, as much as you think you've changed us, you're still the quiet hero.
44:40Stepping in at the right time, lending your efforts, never asking for reward in return.
44:45You're smart.
44:47Capable.
44:49Sincere.
44:51See, I think you're editorializing.
45:06Come on.
45:07Just a little bit farther.
45:08A little bit.
45:09Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.
45:15A couple more steps.
45:16Right here.
45:17Whoa, stop.
45:18Right there.
45:19Perfect.
45:20We're here.
45:21You see, I don't know where you think here is, but it seems to me we're nowhere.
45:24Think back with me for just a second.
45:25Do you remember how this whole thing started?
45:27It started with a girl, a wall, and a paintbrush.
45:32You bought me a paintbrush.
45:34No, lame-o.
45:35I stole this from your permanent collection.
45:39You bought me a wall?
45:41Not bought.
45:42Rented.
45:43This thing didn't come cheap, either.
45:44It cost me a hundred bucks.
45:45You bought me a wall?
45:48You said that already.
45:50Look, it's a limited time offer, so you should get cracking.
45:53Hey, see, did you fail to notice the size of this thing?
45:57I just thought your next endeavor should be bigger and better than your last one.
46:00It's important that you keep on growing, both as a person and as an artist.
46:04I also got you this.
46:05Now, I know it's not going to cover the whole thing, but as the saying goes,
46:08the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
46:12I'm going to need your help on this one.
46:15No, no, no, no.
46:16Not this time.
46:17You're on your own, sister.
46:20Okay, so you're unbelievable.
46:23I mean, as soon as I think I have you all figured out,
46:25you go and you do something so outrageous that
46:30completely challenges me in a way that no one else would even think of.
46:38In case I don't say it enough.
46:48It's about time, Potter.
46:53It's about time.
47:12So the garden can grow.
47:20So the garden can grow.
47:41So the garden can grow.
47:51So the garden can grow.
48:01So the garden can grow.
48:11So the garden can grow.
