00:00:00OK, rolling. OK, it's this way, yeah.
00:00:13So Angie, you mentioned wanting
00:00:15to listen to the 911 call.
00:00:19Yes.
00:00:26911 with emergency my friend
00:00:29just called and said she thinks
00:00:30she has to go to the hospital
00:00:31and then the phone went dead.
00:00:33And I'm racing over there myself.
00:00:36And she's conscious?
00:00:38Well, she was.
00:00:39She's not answering her phone.
00:00:41What's her name?
00:00:42Her name is Justine Seaman.
00:00:45How old is she?
00:00:4639.
00:00:48We've been friends for like 10 years.
00:00:54Tuesday night, my mom had just
00:00:56called me and said, Justine just
00:00:58called me.
00:01:00She said she needs to go to the
00:01:02hospital and she doesn't sound
00:01:03right.
00:01:16I ran up to her front door and
00:01:18her doors are never locked and
00:01:19they were locked.
00:01:28Are you in here?
00:01:30Are you are you inside now?
00:01:32I can't hear you.
00:01:34So I go around to the back door
00:01:36and I hear.
00:01:38Justine!
00:01:39Oh my God, she's screaming.
00:01:41After the first time she screamed,
00:01:42I hear bang, bang, bang.
00:01:45And I'm thinking it's her like
00:01:46hitting the walls, like wanting
00:01:48me to hurry up.
00:01:49And then I'm trying to get the
00:01:50door open. I can't get it open.
00:01:51And I'm trying to kick it open.
00:01:53And then she screamed again.
00:01:54And then I hear bang, bang, bang
00:01:56again.
00:01:57I mean, the most God awful
00:01:58scream you've ever heard in
00:02:00your life.
00:02:03So I, I'm
00:02:05going to run around to the other
00:02:06side of the house and see if I
00:02:07could break in the front
00:02:09somewhere.
00:02:10They're on their way, OK?
00:02:12OK.
00:02:13And all of a sudden the
00:02:15garage doors open and I'm like,
00:02:16what is, what the
00:02:18hell? Like, how did I miss that?
00:02:20Justine!
00:02:22So I start to sprint into
00:02:23her house and Ben Foster
00:02:25comes out and I'm like,
00:02:27what the fuck is going on?
00:02:29You're inside now?
00:02:31Oh, Ben?
00:02:33This is an attack.
00:02:35Why didn't you fucking, I have
00:02:37an ambulance coming.
00:02:39He says, why don't you go
00:02:41in there and get her and I'll get
00:02:42the car ready and we'll take her
00:02:43to the hospital.
00:02:44OK, so what's going on there?
00:02:46Because I was taken off of here.
00:02:48Justine?
00:02:50And I go running in there and as
00:02:51soon as I get inside the door,
00:02:53there's Justine.
00:02:55Justine, I'm right here, baby.
00:02:58Justine, where are you?
00:03:00Where's the nurse?
00:03:02I'm looking at.
00:03:04Oh my God.
00:03:05The bruises all over her.
00:03:07Justine?
00:03:09Oh my God, honey, they're coming.
00:03:11Oh God, it was so
00:03:13awful and she was not moving.
00:03:16Oh my God.
00:03:18There's blood everywhere.
00:03:20Oh God, hurry.
00:03:22Please hurry.
00:03:24I'm right here, honey.
00:03:26Oh my God.
00:03:42All I know is it's a 30-year-old
00:03:43female, I believe to be conscious.
00:03:45She is screaming, help me.
00:03:51I was working for the Grants Pass
00:03:53Police Department and I was assigned
00:03:54as the Criminal Investigations
00:03:57Division Lieutenant.
00:03:59Call came in at seven
00:04:01o'clock.
00:04:02We had officers get in their cars
00:04:04and immediately start heading that
00:04:06way.
00:04:12Do you know who he is?
00:04:13I know who he is, though, and he's
00:04:14got a bad record for beating
00:04:15people.
00:04:21No.
00:04:23Hello?
00:04:24Come in, back here, please.
00:04:26Back here.
00:04:27Who's all in the house?
00:04:28Just her and Allie.
00:04:29OK, is she OK?
00:04:30She had ropes around her throat.
00:04:32OK, just go ahead and stand right
00:04:33here for me, OK?
00:04:34What's her name?
00:04:35Justine.
00:04:36Go ahead and stand in medical.
00:04:38I've been in law enforcement for
00:04:40over 33 years and
00:04:43I've seen very few
00:04:46scenes as horrific and terrible
00:04:48as this one was.
00:04:50It was obvious that Justine
00:04:52had really been tortured
00:04:54and hurt badly.
00:04:56Approximately 30-year-old female
00:04:58naked.
00:04:59She's been severely beaten about
00:05:01the face.
00:05:04I'm currently assigned to the
00:05:05Investigations Division as a
00:05:06detective for the Grants Pass
00:05:08Police Department.
00:05:09Let's be very careful with
00:05:11evidence, please.
00:05:12The victim, Justine, she was
00:05:14unconscious, she wasn't
00:05:15responding.
00:05:16She was transported to a hospital
00:05:18in Medford.
00:05:19What is that crazy guy's name
00:05:20that Justine was seeing?
00:05:24Benjamin what?
00:05:26OK, slow down a little bit.
00:05:27Benjamin Obadiah Foster.
00:05:30Right off the bat, we did have
00:05:32a suspect.
00:05:33He was identified as Ben Foster.
00:05:35Are they in a boyfriend-girlfriend
00:05:36relationship?
00:05:37Yes.
00:05:38How long have they been dating?
00:05:39A couple months.
00:05:42What was he wearing tonight?
00:05:43Well, he just has a little weird
00:05:45ponytail.
00:05:46I saw that.
00:05:47I know it's him because he's
00:05:48just met him a few days ago.
00:05:50It was painted pretty quickly by
00:05:52Angela.
00:05:53Ben had been arrested in Las
00:05:56Vegas for assaulting an
00:05:58ex-girlfriend.
00:05:59She said, the name was the name
00:06:00she gave me because they've
00:06:01looked him up.
00:06:02She has all the raps she's had
00:06:03out of Clark County.
00:06:04That was the one that I
00:06:05namescanned.
00:06:06Benjamin Foster.
00:06:07Good.
00:06:08We learned that Benjamin Foster
00:06:10was involved in multiple
00:06:11incidents in Las Vegas and had
00:06:15a lot of similarities to what
00:06:17occurred here in Grants Pass.
00:06:22Grants Pass is a small town.
00:06:24Generally, we're dealing with a
00:06:26lot of nuisance crimes, a lot of
00:06:27thefts, a lot of the lower-level
00:06:30crimes.
00:06:32This type of incident, it
00:06:34shouldn't be happening in Grants
00:06:36Pass, Oregon.
00:06:37I was really, really worried.
00:06:39We were concerned about our
00:06:41community.
00:06:42We know we have to get this man
00:06:45into custody.
00:06:46What if he does it to somebody
00:06:47else?
00:07:00At one point, I did think that
00:07:02Ben could have been the one for
00:07:04me.
00:07:05It's hard to pinpoint the
00:07:07emotions that you feel when, you
00:07:09know, you love someone and
00:07:12unfortunately, this person could
00:07:15have killed you.
00:07:23I met Ben in the summer of 2012.
00:07:26We were both working at a day
00:07:29club at a Las Vegas strip hotel.
00:07:32He was a bar back, and I was a
00:07:35server.
00:07:36He was cute, tall, athletic, ice
00:07:40blue eyes, dark hair.
00:07:42He was very smart, and I think
00:07:44that's what attracted me to him
00:07:46initially.
00:07:47I don't know if I was exactly
00:07:50looking for a relationship, but
00:07:52eventually, that's what it turned
00:07:54into.
00:07:55We dated probably for about a
00:07:57year before we actually moved in
00:07:59together.
00:08:02Ben could be very, very sweet.
00:08:05He would leave notes, like,
00:08:07hey, I hope you have a good day
00:08:09today.
00:08:10I love you.
00:08:13We had a normal relationship.
00:08:15We would go on dinner dates, go
00:08:17to Disneyland, you know, hang out
00:08:20with all of our friends.
00:08:23But Ben was just not very
00:08:26comfortable around people.
00:08:28He's a very, like, lone wolf kind
00:08:30of person, very closed off.
00:08:34I think Ben might have had a
00:08:36little bit of a jealousy streak.
00:08:41I was helping my ex stay in the
00:08:43country.
00:08:44He was foreign.
00:08:46And Ben got really, really upset
00:08:49that I was continuing to help
00:08:52this person.
00:08:54He kind of started hastily, like,
00:08:58questioning, like, not yelling,
00:09:01but kind of in a more intense
00:09:03tone than what you would normally
00:09:05speak to someone in, and was just
00:09:09obviously visibly upset.
00:09:12I just didn't understand why he
00:09:14was so upset.
00:09:16My ex was actually in a
00:09:17relationship with another person,
00:09:19was engaged.
00:09:21In hindsight, I think that Ben
00:09:24had been set off by that because
00:09:26of what he had been doing
00:09:28himself.
00:09:30It wasn't until later that I
00:09:32found out Ben was actually seeing
00:09:34his ex-girlfriend behind my back.
00:09:39Ben came from Oregon, so he was
00:09:43very outdoorsy.
00:09:45He had a very intense passion for
00:09:49guns and knives and martial arts.
00:09:54He would get new knives every
00:09:56week, new guns.
00:09:57We would go to gun shows every
00:09:59weekend.
00:10:00It was an obsession.
00:10:02He had this weird, like,
00:10:04practice knife.
00:10:06That he used to mess around and
00:10:08pretend to, like, slit my throat
00:10:10in a very playful manner kind of
00:10:12thing.
00:10:13At the time, it didn't seem to be
00:10:16anything alarming.
00:10:18But now it just, it kind of seems
00:10:21very odd seeing how everything
00:10:24played out.
00:10:30One afternoon, Ben and I had
00:10:32gotten into a bar.
00:10:34One afternoon, Ben and I had
00:10:36gotten into some kind of
00:10:38bickering match.
00:10:40I just remember him being, like,
00:10:42really fidgety and shifty and
00:10:44very on edge.
00:10:47Me being the person that I am and
00:10:50trying to push his buttons, I
00:10:52told him that I threw away a
00:10:54brand-new gun that he just bought.
00:10:57And then he pushed me down, and
00:10:59he hit me.
00:11:01He slapped me a pretty hard
00:11:03open-hand slap.
00:11:05Like, he was in a blind rage.
00:11:07You could see it in his eyes.
00:11:09Ben was definitely not the same
00:11:11person that I was in love with.
00:11:13It was a stranger.
00:11:17I was just very shocked.
00:11:19I was very scared.
00:11:21I immediately just booked it.
00:11:23I grabbed my keys, and I left.
00:11:26I decided to call the police.
00:11:32After I gave the police my
00:11:34statement, they accompanied me
00:11:36back to the house.
00:11:38Then they handcuffed him and put
00:11:40him in jail.
00:11:55Within a few months of Ben's
00:11:58arrest, he was let out of jail.
00:12:02He had gone from my boyfriend to
00:12:04my ex-boyfriend, and unbeknownst
00:12:06to me, he had started stalking
00:12:08me.
00:12:16It was a super rainy fall
00:12:19afternoon.
00:12:21I was going to watch some
00:12:24football games with some of my
00:12:26friends, but I needed to go home
00:12:29and get a jacket.
00:12:32I pull up to the house that Ben
00:12:35and I shared, and he was outside
00:12:38of his car.
00:12:41He was yelling.
00:12:42He was screaming.
00:12:43He was banging his fist on my
00:12:45car, telling me to unlock the
00:12:47door, telling me to come out of
00:12:48the car.
00:12:50I asked him to leave.
00:12:54Ben angrily got in his car, and
00:12:56he sped off.
00:12:57And I wait a little bit, maybe
00:12:59about 15 minutes, and then I
00:13:02proceeded to go into the house.
00:13:05And as soon as I get to the
00:13:10closet, Ben grabs me by the hair,
00:13:13and he pulls me down to the
00:13:15ground.
00:13:16I had no idea Ben had gotten to
00:13:18the condo.
00:13:20I'm just kind of like a rag doll
00:13:22at this point.
00:13:23Ben is dragging me on the floor.
00:13:26He goes to slice my face.
00:13:29I put my hand up, and he almost
00:13:32slices this pinky all the way
00:13:34off.
00:13:35I'm bleeding all over myself, and
00:13:37I am just thinking that this is
00:13:39probably going to be the day that
00:13:41I die.
00:13:45He takes me into the garage, and
00:13:47he pins me down, and he is just
00:13:51all out wailing on me at this
00:13:53point.
00:13:54And then he gets up.
00:13:56And when he gets up, I know that
00:13:59that's my only chance to try to
00:14:01get away.
00:14:02So I get up as fast as I can.
00:14:04I hit the garage door.
00:14:08And I just army crawl out of the
00:14:10garage into the rain.
00:14:14I'm covered in blood, and I run
00:14:16to the leasing office.
00:14:19I called the police.
00:14:25Once the police get there, they
00:14:27go to the house to talk to Ben.
00:14:30And at this point, Ben cleaned
00:14:32everything up.
00:14:33He cut his own face, told the
00:14:35police that I cut his face, and
00:14:38that I instigated the incident.
00:14:42That's when they came back to the
00:14:44leasing office, and they put me
00:14:46in handcuffs.
00:14:49The police never wanted to
00:14:51listen to my side of the story.
00:14:55I could not understand how me,
00:14:58covered in my own blood, with
00:15:00defensive wounds all over me, how
00:15:03they could put me in handcuffs
00:15:05and try to take me to jail.
00:15:09Honestly, it's the worst, one of
00:15:12the worst days of my life.
00:15:15After escaping with my life, I
00:15:18had to spend 18 hours in jail.
00:15:21The officers did not look up
00:15:23Ben's record and did not know
00:15:26that Ben had been arrested for
00:15:28attacking me prior to that.
00:15:31But the judge did a little bit
00:15:33of digging, and she made the DA
00:15:36look into the previous incident
00:15:40report when he had gone to jail
00:15:43for attacking me, and ended up
00:15:46ruling and dismissing the
00:15:48domestic charges against me.
00:15:54After I get out of jail, I come
00:15:58home, and he had stolen all of my
00:16:02belongings.
00:16:06I have no clothes, absolutely no
00:16:08clothes, not even underwear.
00:16:10All of my personal things, like
00:16:12my birth certificate, my social
00:16:14security card, he literally took
00:16:16everything.
00:16:23Come, baby.
00:16:24Come, baby girl.
00:16:27Come, come, come, come.
00:16:31Her name's Maya.
00:16:33She's a little shih tzu with a
00:16:35cute little sassy personality.
00:16:40Ben loved my dog.
00:16:44I think he liked hanging out with
00:16:45my dog more than he liked hanging
00:16:46out with me.
00:16:52I think the thing that really
00:16:53locked me in and really, really
00:16:55attracted him to me the very most
00:16:57was the way that he took care of
00:16:59my dog.
00:17:03The best thing is she comes
00:17:04right at me.
00:17:07There's nothing to bite.
00:17:10He got her all kinds of cool
00:17:11gifts, backpacks, all kinds of
00:17:13cute stuff, and he was always
00:17:15really, really kind to Maya.
00:17:17He loved her so much.
00:17:23I met Benjamin when I started
00:17:25doing Krav Maga.
00:17:27Krav Maga is combative.
00:17:29It's like a mixed martial arts.
00:17:31It's not fancy like kung fu.
00:17:33It's more, I guess, more violent.
00:17:38Ben came from a really good
00:17:39family.
00:17:41He was planning to get in law
00:17:42enforcement.
00:17:43He wasn't on drugs.
00:17:45He barely ever drank.
00:17:47On paper, it seemed like he was a
00:17:49solid person.
00:17:51We were friends for probably
00:17:52around a month, and that's when
00:17:55it escalated a little bit
00:17:56further.
00:17:58But it was never an actual
00:17:59girlfriend-boyfriend relationship
00:18:00for a lot of the time that we
00:18:02were seeing each other.
00:18:04I wasn't really looking for that,
00:18:05and he would never admit it, but
00:18:07I knew that he was seeing other
00:18:08people, and I wasn't trying to
00:18:11force him anything, so I just
00:18:13see him a few times a week
00:18:14sometimes, and sometimes I
00:18:15didn't.
00:18:17But when he did come by, Ben
00:18:19didn't always seem present.
00:18:21He's there physically, but you
00:18:23don't really know what he's
00:18:24thinking about.
00:18:26And I felt like he spent a lot
00:18:29of time thinking of his exes.
00:18:32Turned out he was.
00:18:39In December 2017, I get a text
00:18:42message from Ben, and it's a
00:18:45novel of him explaining that he's
00:18:47been going to therapy, and one of
00:18:50the steps that he's taken is
00:18:52trying to make amends with people
00:18:53that he's hurt, and that he just
00:18:56wanted to be able to have a
00:18:57face-to-face conversation for
00:18:59closure.
00:19:01We met at a restaurant.
00:19:03He was just telling me how sorry
00:19:05he was and how he wishes that he
00:19:07didn't mess up, that I was the
00:19:10love of his life, and it seemed
00:19:12like he was genuinely sorry about
00:19:13what he did, and it seemed like
00:19:15he was really trying to make a
00:19:18change.
00:19:20I almost felt bad for him and
00:19:22wanted to be there for him as a
00:19:23friend.
00:19:25It's kind of like a Stockholm
00:19:26syndrome kind of thing, so you
00:19:28in turn start feeling bad for
00:19:30them, which is a very weird thing
00:19:33to do.
00:19:36We started speaking on a regular
00:19:38basis through text again, and we
00:19:40had begun hanging out again.
00:19:49It was Christmas Eve, and he's
00:19:52sitting in my living room.
00:19:55I leave my cell phone on the
00:19:57table, and I go into the other
00:20:01room to change, and when I come
00:20:04back, I don't see Ben on the
00:20:06couch.
00:20:09Ben comes from around the corner
00:20:11in my kitchen and starts
00:20:13strangling me.
00:20:18It happened so fast, but I knew
00:20:20that I had just made a very
00:20:22serious mistake.
00:20:24He takes me down to the couch and
00:20:27strangles me until I'm
00:20:28unconscious.
00:20:34When I wake up, he's punching my
00:20:37walls, and he's walking around,
00:20:40and I just immediately get up, and
00:20:42I run out of my back door and jump
00:20:46off of my first-floor balcony.
00:20:50I ran to the first car that I
00:20:52saw.
00:20:53It was a female with a dog in
00:20:54her car, and she let me in.
00:20:56I had no shoes on.
00:20:58She was so helpful.
00:20:59She was so amazing, and she
00:21:011,000% saved my life.
00:21:13What did he do?
00:21:21What is his name?
00:21:29The police come.
00:21:31This officer literally grabs me
00:21:33by the shoulders and tells me,
00:21:35you cannot see this person
00:21:36anymore.
00:21:37This person could have taken you
00:21:39away from your family right
00:21:40before Christmas.
00:21:41Like, there's no apology that is
00:21:45worth your life.
00:21:50Ben went to jail again, and the
00:21:52state ended up pressing charges
00:21:54for me.
00:21:59There was supposed to be a trial,
00:22:02but nothing was happening in any
00:22:05sort of urgency, I'll say.
00:22:08After that, I was just always
00:22:10looking over my shoulder,
00:22:11thinking that Ben would be there.
00:22:14There was always just this
00:22:16constant state of fear that the
00:22:18other shoe would drop, and maybe
00:22:20he would be able to finish out
00:22:21whatever he was trying to do the
00:22:23last time that he attacked me.
00:22:31About a year after I met Ben, he
00:22:34had a series of really
00:22:36unfortunate events, and one of
00:22:39them was losing his job, and then
00:22:42for a while, he couldn't pay
00:22:43rent, so then he ended up
00:22:45essentially moving in.
00:22:49When he moved in, we had probably
00:22:52been seeing each other a little
00:22:53over a year, year and a half.
00:22:55It was still nothing serious or
00:22:57anything like that.
00:22:58It was just he needed help,
00:23:00and I helped him.
00:23:02It wasn't too long after that
00:23:04where things started getting
00:23:08a little crazy.
00:23:11It was difficult because he was
00:23:13always sick, always depressed,
00:23:15had anxiety.
00:23:16He couldn't get a job because
00:23:17he couldn't even get out of bed.
00:23:21I would question him about,
00:23:22like, well, what's your plan?
00:23:23Like, what are you going to do?
00:23:25I don't mind helping you out,
00:23:27but I can't carry this forever.
00:23:31One day, I was trying to reason
00:23:34with him.
00:23:36He came up from behind me and
00:23:38slammed me on the ground.
00:23:44It was completely unexpected.
00:23:46We weren't arguing.
00:23:48I was so shocked.
00:23:50That was the first time he ever
00:23:52put his hands on me.
00:23:54I was like, oh, my God.
00:23:56I was like, oh, my God.
00:23:58That was the first time he ever
00:23:59put his hands on me.
00:24:03And then he started getting
00:24:04really weird.
00:24:07He started to say people were
00:24:08following him.
00:24:10He really thought people were
00:24:11trying to get him.
00:24:13And I'm getting scared.
00:24:16The paranoia didn't stop.
00:24:18It just escalated real fast.
00:24:25By September, Ben had already
00:24:27attacked me quite a few times.
00:24:29I never knew what was going to
00:24:30happen next.
00:24:32And every time he would attack
00:24:33me, it would be worse the next
00:24:34time and worse the next time.
00:24:36Nothing logical made sense to
00:24:37him anymore.
00:24:39And I didn't know what to do.
00:24:41I didn't know how to get away
00:24:42from him or get him out of my
00:24:43place.
00:24:45I didn't tell any of my friends
00:24:46because I was embarrassed.
00:24:48I just didn't want them to know
00:24:49that I was one of those girls
00:24:51that was with a guy who was
00:24:52beating me.
00:24:55A lot of the time, during the
00:24:56week, I would spend a day in a
00:24:57hotel because I was scared of
00:24:58him.
00:24:59But I couldn't afford the
00:25:00weekends because they were so
00:25:01expensive.
00:25:03And I decided to file a
00:25:04restraining order against Ben.
00:25:12I met the Las Vegas police
00:25:13around the corner from where my
00:25:14condo was at.
00:25:16And they tell me, okay, we're
00:25:17going to go serve it.
00:25:18I said, great.
00:25:19What happens if he doesn't
00:25:20answer the door?
00:25:21They said, nothing.
00:25:23I said, well, that's my place.
00:25:26He moved his belongings to my
00:25:27place and I need to get into my
00:25:28place to get some things so I
00:25:29can get myself together for
00:25:30work.
00:25:32Can you at least escort me into
00:25:33my place so I can get my
00:25:34belongings that I need so I
00:25:35don't get beaten up?
00:25:37Mm-mm.
00:25:38No.
00:25:39We don't do that.
00:25:42The police did take the
00:25:43restraining order and go to
00:25:45serve it to Ben.
00:25:48And as I thought, he did not
00:25:49answer the door.
00:25:51And that was that.
00:25:52They left and they left the
00:25:53paper there at the door.
00:25:55I sat outside of my apartment
00:25:57for a couple hours and I didn't
00:25:58know what to do or where to go.
00:26:01I was absolutely scared to go
00:26:03inside because I had just
00:26:04served him a restraining order.
00:26:07I was so tired.
00:26:08I was so exhausted.
00:26:09I just didn't know what else to
00:26:10do.
00:26:11I didn't know where to go.
00:26:13So I walked into the door.
00:26:16I went straight to my room and
00:26:18laid down and passed out.
00:26:22When I woke up, he was sitting
00:26:25on top of me.
00:26:29He had one hand holding both my
00:26:30arms behind my back.
00:26:33And he started shaving my head
00:26:34with the clippers.
00:26:36Shaved my head bald.
00:26:39And he said, no man will ever
00:26:41look at you or think you're
00:26:42pretty.
00:26:45If I fought back, I knew that I
00:26:46wouldn't win.
00:26:47I knew there was nothing I
00:26:48could do about it.
00:26:50He already just buzzed the whole
00:26:51center of my head.
00:26:52It's gone.
00:26:53This was a completely different
00:26:54person that I couldn't reason
00:26:55with anymore.
00:26:57The best thing that I could
00:26:58possibly do if I wanted to not
00:26:59get my face smashed was to just
00:27:01be quiet.
00:27:06For weeks, he kept me there.
00:27:10I wasn't allowed to go anywhere
00:27:11out of his sight.
00:27:13When we slept, I would either
00:27:15sleep tied up or he'd be behind
00:27:17me and have a gun to my head.
00:27:20He stripped me naked so I
00:27:21couldn't hide anything or have
00:27:22anything on me.
00:27:23I did not have access to my
00:27:24phone.
00:27:26Three to five days in, he said,
00:27:28I'm going to kill you.
00:27:30And I knew he was.
00:27:32I could see it in his eye that
00:27:33he was going to kill me.
00:27:36I was really scared.
00:27:46Things escalated.
00:27:48He would attack me, like,
00:27:49several times over the next few
00:27:51days.
00:27:53I would ask him, like, why are
00:27:54you doing this to me?
00:27:55Like, why are you taking care of
00:27:58you for the last year?
00:28:00You know, like, why are you
00:28:01doing this to me?
00:28:03And he'd look at me and say, I
00:28:05have to.
00:28:08I was like, okay.
00:28:10And then he'd have, like,
00:28:11moments where he'd just look at
00:28:12me and say, I deserve to go to
00:28:14jail for the rest of my life for
00:28:15what I've done to you.
00:28:22Eventually, my credit card was
00:28:24maxed so far that I couldn't
00:28:26order, you know, any food.
00:28:28And we had no water.
00:28:31So we had to go to the grocery
00:28:32store.
00:28:33I'm thinking, this could be my
00:28:35chance.
00:28:38So I just said, there's no more
00:28:40food for Maya.
00:28:41We have no food to eat.
00:28:44And he's like, okay, we need to
00:28:45go to the store.
00:28:47So we jump in my car.
00:28:50He makes me drive.
00:28:52At that moment, I was thinking,
00:28:54maybe I'll be able to get away.
00:28:58We go to the first grocery
00:28:59store, and it's right down the
00:29:00road.
00:29:01It's a small grocery store, and
00:29:02I thought maybe he'd feel more
00:29:03comfortable.
00:29:04And right when I pulled into the
00:29:05parking spot, he said, Maya has
00:29:07to go to the bathroom.
00:29:08I'm going to let her go to the
00:29:09bathroom.
00:29:10I said, okay.
00:29:11I was super scared.
00:29:12I unbuckled my seatbelt, and I
00:29:15jumped out of the car really
00:29:16quick.
00:29:17And I ran.
00:29:20I didn't have my phone.
00:29:21I didn't have any money.
00:29:23So I run inside the store, and
00:29:25I'm frantic.
00:29:26And I see someone who works
00:29:27there, and I explain the
00:29:28situation.
00:29:29I said, do you have an office or
00:29:30a room or somewhere I can lock
00:29:31myself into because I need to
00:29:32hide?
00:29:33She said, no, there's no, we
00:29:34don't have any offices here.
00:29:38I said, okay, he's outside with
00:29:40my dog.
00:29:41He's walking her right now.
00:29:45And I said, do you have a back
00:29:46door or anything?
00:29:47And she said, yeah, we have a
00:29:48back door.
00:29:49So I ran out the back door.
00:29:51I ran into this apartment
00:29:52complex, and I didn't look back.
00:29:54I just kept running forward.
00:29:55I didn't know if he was going to
00:29:56find me, if he found me, what
00:29:57was going to happen.
00:29:59And there was a guy sitting in
00:30:00his car, and he was like, are
00:30:01you okay?
00:30:02And he was just like, do you
00:30:04need a ride to the hospital?
00:30:05And I was like, yes, take me to
00:30:06the hospital.
00:30:11Metropolice.
00:30:12Hi, this is Marie calling from
00:30:14the emergency room.
00:30:16I need to report an assault,
00:30:18like a kidnapping kind of a
00:30:20thing.
00:30:21She won't tell me the name of
00:30:22the person who assaulted her,
00:30:24but she said he kidnapped her,
00:30:26kept her in her house, tied her
00:30:27up.
00:30:28I guess he has her dog, her
00:30:30phone, her car keys and stuff
00:30:32like that.
00:30:35When I got to the hospital, I
00:30:36was treated for seven broken
00:30:38ribs, two black eyes, had
00:30:40bruises all over my body,
00:30:42lacerations all over my body,
00:30:44cauliflower ears, and damage to
00:30:46both my eyes.
00:30:49The nurse comes in to the
00:30:50hospital room and tells me that
00:30:52she had to call the cops.
00:30:54Hi, Jamie.
00:30:56I'm Officer Casper.
00:30:57This is Officer Singh, here to
00:30:58talk to you.
00:31:01We need to know the story about
00:31:03what happened, what brought you
00:31:04here.
00:31:05We need to know information
00:31:06about him.
00:31:07We're not the other officers
00:31:08that helped you out or that you
00:31:09dealt with before.
00:31:17Speaking to the police, I
00:31:19didn't feel safer.
00:31:23I felt more scared.
00:31:25We are going to do everything
00:31:26we can to help you with this,
00:31:28and to do that, we need to know
00:31:31who this person is.
00:31:39I didn't think the police would
00:31:40be able to keep me safe.
00:31:42If they did arrest him, I knew
00:31:43that he'd be out shortly.
00:31:44It wouldn't be long before he
00:31:45came after me again, and he
00:31:47would find me.
00:31:50All right, Jamie, what's the
00:31:51address there?
00:31:54I gave my statement to the
00:31:55police.
00:32:00Later that night, I'm released
00:32:01from the hospital, and a SWAT
00:32:03officer drives me home.
00:32:06He had called a judge, and they
00:32:08got a search warrant for my
00:32:10place to go and arrest Ben.
00:32:14When we got to my place, I see
00:32:16ambulance, fire department, news
00:32:18team, helicopters, drones.
00:32:23They had already bombed the
00:32:25place.
00:32:26All the windows were blown out
00:32:28with tear gas.
00:32:29The front door was on the
00:32:30ground, the front lawn.
00:32:33Ben came out holding Maya.
00:32:35One of the officers took her
00:32:36from him and brought her to me,
00:32:39and then they put him in the
00:32:40car.
00:32:46One day, I was just, you know,
00:32:47sitting on my couch, hanging
00:32:49out, watching TV, and I see
00:32:52Ben's face plastered on the
00:32:55news.
00:32:56He's accused of holding his
00:32:57girlfriend captive, beating her,
00:32:59burning her with lye, even
00:33:00shaving her head and tying her
00:33:01up.
00:33:02He had done some pretty terrible
00:33:04things to the girl that he was
00:33:06dating after me.
00:33:08I was very much in disbelief and
00:33:10shock.
00:33:12I was just thinking about the
00:33:13fact that he had the past that
00:33:16he had, that he was able to do
00:33:19this to someone else, was just
00:33:21mind-boggling.
00:33:23But then, on the other side of
00:33:25the coin, it was something that
00:33:27was serious enough to gain a
00:33:29little bit of traction to maybe
00:33:31put him in jail for, you know, a
00:33:34good amount of time.
00:33:36Just last week, police say
00:33:37Foster barricaded himself inside
00:33:39for hours.
00:33:40Ben was charged with battery
00:33:42domestic violence, strangulation,
00:33:45kidnapping, first degree, as
00:33:47well as a few other charges.
00:33:49But I didn't want to go to trial.
00:33:51I did not want to show up in
00:33:52that courtroom.
00:33:53I did not want to do that.
00:33:55It wasn't just fear of
00:33:56testifying.
00:33:57It was having to sit in a room
00:34:00with him and having to feel that
00:34:04again.
00:34:07The D.A. and the police all had
00:34:11more than enough evidence.
00:34:13They had taken hundreds of
00:34:14pictures of me.
00:34:15I've given my statement.
00:34:17They saw what I looked like.
00:34:18Why do I have to go there and
00:34:19sit in front of him?
00:34:21So the D.A. cut him a deal.
00:34:24At the end of the day, if we
00:34:25don't have a willing participant,
00:34:27a willing victim that wants to
00:34:28come to court, and this victim
00:34:30did not want to come to court,
00:34:32we have to do what we can to
00:34:33salvage a conviction.
00:34:45He was sentenced to a maximum
00:34:4730 months in jail but given
00:34:48credit for two years already
00:34:50served.
00:35:01I find out that he was let out
00:35:04of jail and he got time served.
00:35:07I was always on guard and on
00:35:09alert and very vigilant knowing
00:35:11that Ben was out there again.
00:35:13I mean, now it's starting to
00:35:15develop into a sort of pattern.
00:35:18He was showing that he was
00:35:20growing increasingly more
00:35:21dangerous.
00:35:23He was 100% going to hurt
00:35:24someone else.
00:35:35I do believe Ben Foster is evil.
00:35:38I don't know how he ever got
00:35:41turned loose on Oregon to
00:35:44brutalize my friend like that.
00:35:47It was just all so unnecessary.
00:35:49He should have never been here.
00:35:58AMR is getting ready to
00:35:59transport to the hospital.
00:36:01They're actually talking about
00:36:02intubation.
00:36:03She's got severe injuries to
00:36:05the face.
00:36:06Oh, God.
00:36:07When I walked into here, I
00:36:08sure didn't expect.
00:36:10Thank God.
00:36:13I spoke to police and the
00:36:15detectives and then me and my
00:36:17cousin went straight to the
00:36:18hospital.
00:36:22Justine was completely like in a
00:36:24coma and just so beaten, so
00:36:29brutalized.
00:36:31They didn't think she was going
00:36:33to make it.
00:36:36Justine is a very, very dear
00:36:39friend to me.
00:36:41She's just larger than life.
00:36:43She's beautiful.
00:36:44I mean, she's like everybody's
00:36:46favorite bartender in town.
00:36:48She's just the most talented
00:36:50human being I've ever met.
00:36:53All I wanted was just for her to
00:36:55wake up.
00:36:56That's all I wanted, you know?
00:36:59In southern Oregon, a manhunt is
00:37:01underway.
00:37:02If you see any hitchhikers,
00:37:03please call 9-1-1 and don't pick
00:37:04them up, okay?
00:37:05It really shook up this little
00:37:08town.
00:37:09Everyone was just sick about it,
00:37:11devastated that Justine was hurt,
00:37:14frantically wanting him to be
00:37:16caught.
00:37:1736-year-old Benjamin Obadiah
00:37:19Foster on the run after
00:37:21allegedly kidnapping and trying
00:37:22to kill a woman.
00:37:24Authorities are warning he's
00:37:25extremely dangerous.
00:37:27Ben Foster had been identified
00:37:29and had fled from the scene
00:37:31prior to the officer's arrival.
00:37:33All right, come on out before
00:37:34we hear you.
00:37:35Who are you?
00:37:36You banned the suspect.
00:37:37That looks like him.
00:37:39We're going to confirm who you
00:37:40are.
00:37:41If you're not the guy we're
00:37:42looking for, we're going to let
00:37:43you go, okay?
00:37:44It's not him.
00:37:54We actually called in more
00:37:55resources to help this manhunt
00:37:57for Ben.
00:37:58We had reached out to the U.S.
00:37:59Marshals as well to assist in
00:38:01this, and then it was basically
00:38:04every detective within the
00:38:05Grants Pass Police Department
00:38:07going through every open source
00:38:08piece of information, social
00:38:09media, prior addresses in those
00:38:12open sources, trying to find
00:38:13out a place that he hid.
00:38:18We found out that Ben Foster
00:38:20had grown up in Grants Pass,
00:38:23had family in the area.
00:38:25Mom and dad were very helpful.
00:38:29When was the last time you saw
00:38:30Ben or talked to him?
00:38:328 o'clock last night.
00:38:33He came in...
00:38:35Whirlwind.
00:38:36A whirlwind, yeah.
00:38:37And just took out boatloads of
00:38:39clothing.
00:38:40And I'm going, well, are you
00:38:42moving in with Justine?
00:38:45I'm not going to get into great
00:38:46detail, but Justine is in the
00:38:48hospital, and she is in really,
00:38:51really, really bad shape.
00:38:54Oh, my God.
00:38:55Well, that's what happened in
00:38:57Vegas.
00:39:00If you guys have contact with
00:39:01Benjamin, it is in his best
00:39:04interest to contact the police
00:39:06and turn himself in, because
00:39:08everybody is looking for him
00:39:09right now.
00:39:11You know what?
00:39:12It wouldn't surprise me if he
00:39:13didn't try to head back to
00:39:15Vegas.
00:39:16Yeah?
00:39:17Yeah.
00:39:18You know, something snapped in
00:39:19him.
00:39:20I don't know what, but it really
00:39:22breaks our heart.
00:39:25On Thursday, January 26th, we
00:39:28received a tip through our
00:39:30narcotics detectives that Ben
00:39:32Foster was in the Sunny Valley
00:39:34area.
00:39:36Sunny Valley is a rural area
00:39:38with a lot of farms and ranches,
00:39:41and it's a very forested area
00:39:43out there.
00:39:45We set up a surveillance team
00:39:47to look for Ben Foster.
00:39:49And we found that he was in a
00:39:52We set up a surveillance in
00:39:54Sunny Valley, and Ben Foster was
00:39:56observed outside the residence.
00:39:58Let's get cover right here.
00:40:02We found out the house belonged
00:40:03to a female named Tina Jones.
00:40:06So we pre-deployed scout teams
00:40:08to get at least eyes on the
00:40:09house with binoculars...
00:40:12...to see if they could see
00:40:13anything.
00:40:17It appears that Tina's dogs
00:40:19alerted to the officers out in
00:40:21the forest.
00:40:23Ben Foster came out of the
00:40:24residence, and you could tell
00:40:26that he had some concern about
00:40:28what the dogs were barking at.
00:40:32Ben begins doing
00:40:33counter-surveillance.
00:40:35He climbed up on the roof of
00:40:36Tina's house with a set of
00:40:37binoculars.
00:40:43Then he came down and started
00:40:44doing ground property checks,
00:40:46and ultimately spots one of the
00:40:48surveillance guys that are in
00:40:49the bushes, and then takes off
00:40:51running.
00:41:04A handful of officers from
00:41:05every agency that were up there
00:41:06gave chase, and then saw him go
00:41:08down an embankment.
00:41:20Unfortunately, we lost
00:41:21visual contact with him.
00:41:24Our hearts just dropped
00:41:25because this dangerous man,
00:41:27we felt, had gotten away.
00:41:30At the time, we served the
00:41:31search warrant on Tina's
00:41:32residence.
00:41:36Tina was identified as a
00:41:37female that was a friend of
00:41:39Ben Foster's family.
00:41:49We found a small light travel
00:41:50backpack that, when we opened
00:41:53it, had Ben's wallet in there,
00:41:55had his ID, a large amount of
00:41:57cash.
00:41:59It looked like he had kind of
00:42:00assembled a go-bag, the kit, to
00:42:03get ready to, like, flee out of
00:42:05state and flee out of the area.
00:42:07Handbag containing three
00:42:10cell phones.
00:42:12We found multiple
00:42:13cameras.
00:42:15We found a bag of
00:42:18We found multiple cell phones,
00:42:19but every phone was wrapped in
00:42:20tinfoil.
00:42:22We found a tablet and a laptop
00:42:23that both had the camera covered.
00:42:26Everything that had any kind of
00:42:27electronic communication was
00:42:29wrapped in tinfoil.
00:42:31It just exhibited this extreme
00:42:33paranoia that he was being
00:42:34tracked.
00:42:37There was a cell phone found
00:42:38with the go-bag, and when that
00:42:41cell phone was accessed, we
00:42:43discovered that dating apps had
00:42:46been accessed.
00:42:48He may have been using dating
00:42:49apps, potentially to get
00:42:51assistance in fleeing from the
00:42:53state or to target potential
00:42:56victims.
00:42:58And we are back with our
00:42:59national lead and the race to
00:43:00find a man who police say may be
00:43:02using dating apps to lure and
00:43:04then attack women.
00:43:06The greatest fear is that we
00:43:07were going to end up with more
00:43:09victims, and that's the reason
00:43:10why we got that information out
00:43:12to the national media, to let
00:43:14women know to watch out while
00:43:17Ben Foster was on the loose.
00:43:19There is a manhunt right now
00:43:20for a suspect in a brutal
00:43:21kidnapping who police say may
00:43:23actually be searching online
00:43:25right now for his next victim,
00:43:2736-year-old Benjamin Obadiah
00:43:28Foster.
00:43:30I had gone some peaceful years
00:43:32not really thinking much about
00:43:34Ben, and then I see that there
00:43:37is a manhunt for Ben.
00:43:40I hear the word manhunt and a
00:43:42little voice inside of my head
00:43:44is just like, is it possible
00:43:45that he would come back here?
00:43:47I was consistently glued to the
00:43:49television.
00:43:52I just hoped that Ben was not
00:43:54going to come back to Las Vegas.
00:44:02One day I got a phone call out
00:44:04of the blue from Ben's brother,
00:44:06and I hadn't spoken to him in
00:44:08over a year.
00:44:10And he told me that Ben was on
00:44:12the run.
00:44:14He was crying.
00:44:16And he said, I'm sorry that I
00:44:18never believed anything you said.
00:44:22And he told me,
00:44:26I didn't want to believe any of
00:44:27it was true, but I know that you
00:44:29weren't lying now because he
00:44:30just did it to somebody else.
00:44:33And she's really bad, really bad.
00:44:35And they're looking for him
00:44:37right now, and he's out.
00:44:39He's on the run.
00:44:41I just wanted you to know to be
00:44:43careful because he might come
00:44:45down there, you know?
00:44:52On Sunday the 29th, our fugitive
00:44:55apprehension teams continued to
00:44:57search for Ben Foster.
00:45:00We were trying absolutely every
00:45:02angle that we could.
00:45:04We had rotating groups of people
00:45:06that were continuously going out
00:45:08to Sunny Valley to keep shaking
00:45:09anything.
00:45:13And then we moved into Monday.
00:45:16I remember just trying to talk
00:45:18with my partners, like, what am I
00:45:20missing here?
00:45:21What is some other tools, some
00:45:23other resource that we can have?
00:45:28I interviewed Tina at the jail
00:45:30because we were concerned that
00:45:32she knew where Ben Foster was.
00:45:34She had told us he had showed up
00:45:36the night of the 24th, said,
00:45:38hey, I got in a fight with my
00:45:39parents.
00:45:40Can I stay here?
00:45:41And they all go to the same
00:45:42church in Sunny Valley.
00:45:43And so she said, yeah, you can
00:45:44stay here.
00:45:46And allowed him to park the car
00:45:47there.
00:45:48She said that she didn't really
00:45:49know that he was on the run from
00:45:51law enforcement.
00:45:52We are still looking for Mr.
00:45:55Foster, and we're concerned that
00:45:58he's still up there.
00:46:00Not in your house, but somewhere.
00:46:02No, he shouldn't be in the house
00:46:03because between Ren and Rick,
00:46:09they're up there taking care of
00:46:10my dogs.
00:46:12She was concerned about her dogs,
00:46:14and there was two dogs that were
00:46:15still at the house.
00:46:16And she provided the name of
00:46:17Richard Barron, of somebody that
00:46:20she trusted to take care of her
00:46:21dogs.
00:46:22My partners communicated with
00:46:23Richard and said, hey, are you
00:46:25okay with taking care of the
00:46:26dogs?
00:46:27He says, yes.
00:46:28Explained that we were unable to
00:46:30locate Ben, so if there was any
00:46:31concerns about anything, please
00:46:33call us.
00:46:38We did finally get a tip that
00:46:40someone had called for a taxi
00:46:43ride from the Sunny Valley area.
00:46:46A guy who works for a cab
00:46:48company said that he got a phone
00:46:50call requesting a ride.
00:46:52The person that provided the name
00:46:53for the ride was Richard Barron,
00:46:55Tina's neighbor.
00:46:57The cab driver knew that Richard
00:47:00was an older male, and per the
00:47:02cab driver, it was like, this
00:47:03guy did not sound old, so he
00:47:05declined.
00:47:06He knew about this manhunt for
00:47:08Ben and then called us.
00:47:10Shortly after that, I got a phone
00:47:12call from Detective Sergeant
00:47:13Hamilton saying that they were at
00:47:16Richard's house.
00:47:18We need to get Major Frimes out.
00:47:21They found Richard deceased, and
00:47:24then they also found his
00:47:27caretaker, Donald Griffith.
00:47:30They were both deceased in the
00:47:31living room.
00:47:32There's blood.
00:47:33I have to do the job.
00:47:36I have to do the job.
00:47:37There's blood.
00:47:38I have to do the job.
00:47:42We need to get Major Frimes out.
00:47:45They had been killed in a residence just across from where
00:47:49Tina's residence was.
00:47:52We suspect that Ben had broken in and held them hostage
00:47:57while he was there hiding.
00:48:00They had both violently been beaten.
00:48:03Yes.
00:48:04Big time.
00:48:05The house had an overpowering odor of gasoline.
00:48:08Both the bodies were covered in wood pellets.
00:48:11I had no doubt when they told me that,
00:48:13that it was connected to Ben.
00:48:17We called cab companies and discovered
00:48:19that another cab company had picked up a subject
00:48:22from Richard's house.
00:48:25Didn't have the beard on, but he was a tall guy.
00:48:27Does his stature match his?
00:48:28Yeah.
00:48:29OK.
00:48:30They had driven up to Richard's house
00:48:32and they were trying to figure out
00:48:33what was going on with Ben.
00:48:35And they found out that Ben was dead.
00:48:38Yeah.
00:48:39OK.
00:48:40They had driven him back to the city of Grants Pass.
00:48:44They even told us that they had dropped this person off
00:48:47near the area of Justine's house where this crime had occurred
00:48:51and described him as having a small white dog with him.
00:48:59Hello.
00:49:00Hey.
00:49:01Justine's neighbor actually caught
00:49:03like a glimpse of a guy matching Ben's description.
00:49:06Someone told you that our suspect
00:49:07was in the house on Shane Way?
00:49:09He said something too, like he was walking a dog
00:49:12at like 10 this morning.
00:49:13Detectives were able to get some surveillance
00:49:16video from the neighborhood.
00:49:18Here's a photo of the last time you've seen on video.
00:49:20Carhartt, tan colored jacket, jeans.
00:49:23Tan Carhartt jacket, blue jeans, white dog with a blue vest.
00:49:26Clean shaven, shaved head.
00:49:27Perfect.
00:49:28It showed Ben Foster there with the white dog
00:49:31just down the street from Justine's residence.
00:49:34Copy.
00:49:35Let's go around and help him up front.
00:49:37We were fairly confident that it was Ben there
00:49:40hiding at Justine's house.
00:49:41So we called Jackson County SWAT team over.
00:49:47You have shooters on this side.
00:49:49You've got a shooter here.
00:49:50You need to get three guys here for front door.
00:49:53We wanted to prevent him from being
00:49:55able to slip away like he was able to do
00:49:58in the rural area of Sunny Valley.
00:49:59Several law enforcement agencies,
00:50:01including Grants Pass Police, have blocked off the roadway
00:50:04all across this community.
00:50:05Everybody scoot back.
00:50:06Go back further, please.
00:50:07Guys, if you can get across the street, please.
00:50:10We need to take the door.
00:50:11We need to open the garage.
00:50:12We need to start clearing with technology and with K-9.
00:50:15And we need to knock out this fucking house.
00:50:16Benjamin Foster, we have a warrant for your arrest.
00:50:19Come out with your hands in the air.
00:50:21For hours, we attempted announcements into the house.
00:50:24Give me bangs front and rear.
00:50:25Deployed chemical munitions into the house.
00:50:27Bang away.
00:50:29We have a search warrant for your arrest.
00:50:32But there was no response.
00:50:34We believed at that point that Ben was
00:50:37actually inside the residence.
00:50:38So we had to go and obtain a search warrant
00:50:41to be able to gain access.
00:50:44When we had that, the search warrant
00:50:46made entry into the residence.
00:50:48They're set.
00:50:49They're ready.
00:50:50They're good on you.
00:50:51Is that it?
00:50:52They had sent Jackson County SWAT team
00:50:53into the house with their K-9 and drones
00:50:57to search the house.
00:51:04Primary is clear.
00:51:05There was no luck, no Ben.
00:51:12He's on foot in the area somewhere if he isn't in there.
00:51:15I felt defeated that I, maybe I missed something.
00:51:20What about sending a small team up with the dog,
00:51:23throw the K-9 in underneath the crawl space?
00:51:27They started a secondary search outside the residence.
00:51:31There's a K-9 back there.
00:51:33And they found an access area underneath the home.
00:51:40I got movement.
00:51:41I got movement.
00:51:42The dog indicated that there was something down there.
00:51:44Guys, he's under the house looking through the fence.
00:51:47Get back behind armor.
00:51:48Let's go nice and slow.
00:51:50We got him.
00:51:50He had hidden himself underneath the residence.
00:51:54Let's get some pepper bullet or some sort of munition
00:51:56in that hole.
00:51:57Pepper ball will be delivered to the crawl space now.
00:52:01At that point, we put some chemical agents under there.
00:52:07They use Jackson County's robot and send it in there.
00:52:12The second they send the robots underneath the house,
00:52:14they see bags, clothing, a sleeping bag.
00:52:17And then as they're moving through underneath the space,
00:52:20they see him, Ben.
00:52:22Hey, he's kneeled down.
00:52:24He's looking outside.
00:52:25He starts moving all over the place.
00:52:27And he manages to stay still long enough to see that he's
00:52:30got a pistol in his hand.
00:52:31Guys, watch the vents.
00:52:32Watch the vents.
00:52:33One of the robots actually has a speaker
00:52:35that they can use their negotiator to talk through.
00:52:38Never got a response.
00:52:41And then there was a gunshot.
00:52:46One of the robots moves to get a better
00:52:49position of where he's at.
00:52:52And when they moved over, they saw that there
00:52:54was an apparent injury to him.
00:52:59As they got in closer, they were able to see
00:53:01that he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
00:53:05We can't fucking show him.
00:53:07He was taken to the hospital, where
00:53:09he died shortly after that.
00:53:11A man accused of kidnapping and torturing a woman in Oregon
00:53:15is dead after a standoff with authorities.
00:53:18Police had been searching for 36-year-old Benjamin Foster
00:53:20for more than a week.
00:53:22Investigators say he was using dating apps to find women.
00:53:25He was also seen with a gun in his hand.
00:53:27He was shot in the head.
00:53:28He was shot in the head.
00:53:29He was shot in the head.
00:53:30He was shot in the head.
00:53:31He was shot in the head.
00:53:32He was shot in the head.
00:53:33He was shot in the head.
00:53:34He was shot in the head.
00:53:35He was shot in the head.
00:53:36He was shot in the head.
00:53:37He was shot in the head.
00:53:38He was shot in the head.
00:53:39He was shot in the head.
00:53:40He was shot in the head.
00:53:41He was shot in the head.
00:53:42He was shot in the head.
00:53:43He was shot in the head.
00:53:44He was shot in the head.
00:53:45He was shot in the head.
00:53:46He was shot in the head.
00:53:47He was shot in the head.
00:53:48He was shot in the head.
00:53:49He was shot in the head.
00:53:50He was shot in the head.
00:53:51He was shot in the head.
00:53:52He was shot in the head.
00:53:53He was shot in the head.
00:53:54He was shot in the head.
00:53:55He was shot in the head.
00:53:56He was shot in the head.
00:53:57He was shot in the head.
00:53:58He was shot in the head.
00:54:00And I thought it was because I hadn't found that rope soon enough.
00:54:06I could not believe she finally woke up.
00:54:15I wouldn't be alive.
00:54:16I would not be alive today if it wasn't for Angie and her mom.
00:54:24Torture is an understatement of what I went through.
00:54:28I mean, I would have never guessed that this would happen to me.
00:54:33Never in a million years.
00:54:35I mean, you don't wake up thinking like,
00:54:36oh, somebody's going to try to kill me today.
00:54:41Ben and I have been hanging out probably for about two months total.
00:54:47It was a very casual relationship.
00:54:50I never saw any red fox because he's nothing but nice to me.
00:54:55But one day Ben came over to Angie's house
00:54:57and he was asking for clean urine because he had to pass a urinalysis test.
00:55:04I got very curious because normally when you're required to take a urinalysis test,
00:55:09it's because you're in trouble for something with the law.
00:55:12So I started going on the internet
00:55:15and that's when I found out about his history in Las Vegas.
00:55:24I mean, I was very shocked.
00:55:27I felt I needed to tell my boss because at the end of the day,
00:55:31you don't want somebody working for you in the bar industry,
00:55:34giving people alcohol that has a history of, you know, abusing women.
00:55:41And he got fired ultimately because of it.
00:55:47Ben knew I was the reason he got fired.
00:55:50So I got to the point where I just, I stopped hanging out with him.
00:55:54Probably like a month after he got fired,
00:55:57I got home and he'd been there all day in my garage.
00:56:06I just remember sitting on my couch and him coming out of my garage
00:56:10and just started beating me.
00:56:12He said I got him fired.
00:56:14Ben held me captive and basically kidnapped me.
00:56:18It was almost three days.
00:56:19It was almost three days.
00:56:21He just beat me and beat me and beat me and beat me.
00:56:26He beat me so bad that I have traumatic brain damage.
00:56:35I remember hearing like some knocking outside.
00:56:40When Angie found me, I was like, fine, I'm saved.
00:56:45Because otherwise, like, I don't think I would have made it.
00:56:51This photo is when Justine, she had just come out of the hospital.
00:56:57It was the best, best moment ever.
00:57:07After it happened, I had nightmares and flashbacks.
00:57:10And the minute I saw Justine at one day and saw her okay,
00:57:15that all just stopped.
00:57:17It was the weirdest thing ever.
00:57:19You know what I mean?
00:57:20Just seeing her whole again, it just stopped.
00:57:24I never dreamed that she would be whole and doing so good again.
00:57:30It's just so awesome.
00:57:32I should have known.
00:57:33She's the strongest, most talented person I've ever met.
00:57:36It's been a long road, a very long road.
00:57:41I had to learn how to rewalk because my muscles were so atrophied.
00:57:45I was so skinny.
00:57:48I just had my teeth done, goodness, because he punched out on my teeth.
00:57:53So it was just, it was just a lot to deal with.
00:57:58I'm like, I'm very lucky to be here.
00:58:01Sorry.
00:58:03In my opinion, I think that the justice system here did a great disservice to Justine.
00:58:11Ben was obviously getting increasingly more abusive and increasingly more dangerous.
00:58:20And I just wanted to make sure that he was treated fairly.
00:58:25I just wanted to make sure that he was treated fairly.
00:58:27If they would have taken my story and Jamie's story more seriously,
00:58:32if they would have taken my story and Jamie's story more seriously,
00:58:37they could have prevented this from happening to her and they could have saved two lives.
00:58:51I really think Ben was really sick.
00:58:54He was not well at all.
00:58:57I don't think everyone is like that, but I do know that they're out there.
00:59:04So I do pay closer attention to those things.
00:59:13I have never spoken to Jamie or Justine,
00:59:16but unfortunately we share this bond with each other
00:59:20that only we three can really understand.
00:59:26I look back on this time in my life spent with Ben
00:59:31and instead of, you know, looking at it as a blemish,
00:59:38I look at it as a learning experience.
00:59:41I could move past them and not get myself into the same kind of relationship.
00:59:45Now in my life, I'm happy.
00:59:48I'm happy and I am even happier that I don't have to look over my shoulder anymore.
