00:00And what is the location of your emergency?
00:02Everett, Washington.
00:04Ah!
00:07People tell me all the time, it's not my fault.
00:10I have heard hundreds of times, it's not your fault.
00:14But I should have seen the red flags.
00:19I was sleeping in my room.
00:21I heard two pops and it woke me up.
00:24I should have moved.
00:26I should have been more careful.
00:30I should have played it safe.
00:32She's lying face down in her own blood.
00:35I am scared to open the door.
00:46Had I known that the most dangerous time
00:49for a person in a domestic violence relationship
00:52is when they try to leave, had I known that,
00:56I probably would have done things differently.
01:01I met Kevin in 2007 at Denny's.
01:08He was there with his friend in the booth behind me.
01:13And I was there with my friend, Ari.
01:17The story with Kevin and Wanda, you would think,
01:21was picture perfect, but it wasn't.
01:25Kevin and Wanda, you would think, was picture perfect.
01:30We were sitting in a booth eating nachos,
01:33and Kevin came and sat right in our booth next to Wanda.
01:39He was flirting and smiling, and I sort of was dismissive.
01:49Kevin and I, we were best friends in high school,
01:51and Kevin was never shy around the room.
01:54I think his way of trying to flirt with them
01:56was tell a joke, make them smile.
01:58He was just a clown.
02:00He told her, I want to get to know you better.
02:03I want to take you out.
02:07He had asked for my phone number.
02:09I sort of just ignored him, actually.
02:15The next weekend, I ran into him in downtown Spokane.
02:20There was an event, and he made a joke
02:22about it being meant to be, that we ran into each other.
02:26Just the charming way he spoke drew my interest.
02:33He was in the military.
02:34He had a gray head on his shoulders,
02:36and my dad was in the Air Force as well.
02:39So I was like, that's a great career.
02:42It's very admirable.
02:44She had big hopes and dreams and aspirations,
02:46so I thought that was a good fit.
02:49He made it pretty clear he wanted a relationship.
02:52He wanted to be with me, and I found
02:55his efforts to be attractive.
03:01Amanda is my oldest sister.
03:05The first time I found out that Amanda was seeing Kevin Lewis,
03:10she had been living with me shortly after college
03:14and had mentioned to me that a friend was going to stop by.
03:20And he complimented me on my broad shoulders.
03:25He said I was a lot bigger than he imagined
03:29and kind of did this gesture.
03:32And I immediately liked him.
03:37I enjoyed being around him because he was polite.
03:42He was constantly trying to be my friend.
03:47After seven months or so of dating, we moved in together.
03:59Kevin would hang out with all of my siblings.
04:02One time, we went and played a softball game.
04:06My sister Alicia was there.
04:08She had the nickname Punky.
04:10Punky was very loving, very big personality,
04:13the type of person that would do anything for her family.
04:18Punky always had some problems with any of our siblings,
04:24boyfriends, girlfriend.
04:26She thought Kevin was arrogant, and I didn't see any of it.
04:32Most of the things that she said fell on deaf ears
04:36because we just always heard her talking her opinion.
04:39So we would take it with a grain of salt when it was negative.
04:43I had already decided I liked him
04:45and that he was a good fit for our family.
04:50When the relationship started to get serious,
04:53he asked my dad's permission for my hand in marriage.
04:56Kevin promised my dad that he would
04:59be a good husband for my sister.
05:02Apparently, his dad wasn't a very good guy.
05:06So my dad told him that he would be
05:09like a father to him in return.
05:12And then from there, it was kind of a short engagement.
05:15We were married in July 2009.
05:20We had a pretty big wedding.
05:21I think it was 200 guests, and my three sisters
05:25were bridesmaids.
05:27In my family, my parents were still together,
05:31my relatives, my cousins.
05:33Everyone had these long-term marriages,
05:36and we were all happy and excited.
05:41I remember tearing up as she was walking down the aisle.
05:45Kevin didn't have much family of his own,
05:48so we were ready to step in and be his family.
06:01I was 25 when I got pregnant with my first child, Eliana.
06:09Everyone was really excited about it.
06:13First, I called up Punky, and I said,
06:15do you want to go by Tia Punky or Tia Alicia?
06:19Of course, Tia is aunt in Spanish.
06:23And she was like, what?
06:26She just had a really, really big reaction
06:29and was super excited.
06:33When Eliana was three months old,
06:36I found out I was pregnant again.
06:39I have three children, two girls, and a boy.
06:43They're all very close in age.
06:46Amanda's a great mother, cautious, nurturing,
06:51and Kevin seemed enveloped as a father.
06:56As soon as Eliana was born, Kevin actually teared up.
07:03He held her and loved her right away.
07:08I was a little surprised.
07:09You're shining a light on my baby.
07:12It's not tough, right?
07:14It is.
07:14Stop it.
07:15No, stop it.
07:17It was a very rare occasion for me to see him emotional.
07:24One of the big problems in the marriage
07:26was his lack of affection.
07:28When he would get upset, he would try to put me down
07:31and call me a lot of names.
07:34When I was pregnant with my son, he called me
07:37a crybaby and fat bitch.
07:41I was just really like, who did I marry?
07:46Who is this person?
07:49I think he had abandonment issues from when he was young.
07:55Kevin's dad did not claim him.
07:58He said that that wasn't his son.
08:02I do think that that created some emotional issues
08:06for Kevin.
08:08I remember asking myself a couple of times
08:10if I had made a mistake in marrying Kevin.
08:15My dad's feedback was to make it work.
08:18He was like, this is a good guy.
08:21He doesn't drink.
08:22He doesn't gamble.
08:23He doesn't do drugs.
08:24He works a regular job.
08:27But Kevin was emotionally abusive
08:30throughout the marriage.
08:34Divorce was not a topic in my house growing up.
08:37We just never thought it would be a part of our family.
08:42Certainly after having kids, I felt committed
08:46to trying to make it work.
08:48And so I tried to avoid certain conversations once I kind
08:54of learned his trigger buttons.
08:58After we had been married a couple of years,
09:02Kevin really started to get controlling.
09:06He would check my phone on a regular basis.
09:11He wanted me to delete all of my mail contacts in my phone.
09:17There were just numerous events throughout the marriage
09:21where he was upset about something that I was wearing.
09:27I remember being at a family reunion.
09:30I was wearing a t-shirt.
09:32And I had bent over to pick up one of the toys for the kids.
09:36And he got upset about that because my breasts were
09:39showing when I bent over.
09:41He said, woman, in a stern voice.
09:44And it was unsettling.
09:49But I didn't know the dynamic of the situation.
09:53I just figured that that was something that he did.
09:55And I assumed she tolerated it.
09:58I just was really taken aback by his reaction
10:03when I'm with my family.
10:06I remember one time we were playing video games, Kevin
10:09and I. And Amanda was in the back doing something.
10:13And as she came out, she had like little shorts on.
10:17And he was like, don't be looking at her.
10:18And I was like, what are you talking about?
10:20I was shocked.
10:21So I looked at him and I said, are you serious?
10:24Like, why would I look at her in any type of way?
10:28It just threw me for a loop because this
10:30is the first time he was being aggressive with me.
10:32And Kevin's demeanor around Amanda
10:34was just kind of bossy for no reason.
10:37Like, everything was on command.
10:41She had tried everything that she could with Kevin.
10:44And nothing was working.
10:46And I think at that point, Amanda's mental state
10:50was more important than anything else.
10:53And having a good environment for her children
10:56to be raised in.
10:59Years of lack of affection and what I now
11:04know is emotional abuse, it was just too much damage done.
11:09When I went to talk to Kevin about wanting a divorce,
11:16he was super upset about it and seemed hurt.
11:23I remember being surprised.
11:26I really didn't think he was going to care that much.
11:30So once I had really decided I wanted to divorce,
11:34finances were a concern.
11:38And I'm like, how am I going to afford a different place?
11:42I had sort of moved into the office.
11:46So it wasn't too difficult to avoid sharing this space
11:51with my kids.
11:53I had a lot of friends that were in the same situation.
11:56It wasn't too difficult to avoid sharing
12:00the same space with him.
12:09I was sleeping in the home.
12:11He went into my room.
12:17And he was kind of in a rage.
12:22Upset, wanting to look through my phone.
12:28Throughout the marriage, he was checking to see
12:30what I was saying to friends.
12:32He would say, you know, I don't want anyone in our business
12:36and just get really upset about that.
12:38Somehow, we had ended up in the closet.
12:43He was holding me hostage there.
12:46Kevin's 5' 11", 185 pounds, and he's a trained boxer.
12:51He was jamming my fingers into the fingerprint lock
12:55on my phone, trying to get it to unlock.
12:57It wasn't working.
12:59Then he just punched me square in the face.
13:07I just remember being in shock, like, what just happened?
13:13He got a towel and started cleaning up
13:16the blood off my face.
13:18He hugged me.
13:20And then he left for work.
13:35I called my dad.
13:37As soon as he answered the phone, he said,
13:40Kevin assaulted Amanda.
13:42What do you mean?
13:45Like, how bad?
13:48He said, she is really messed up.
13:53And I was furious.
13:55Everything was a facade.
14:00Punky was pissed.
14:02She was just furious that he would put his hands on me.
14:07I don't think any of us knew what kind of person
14:10he really was.
14:12But Punky knew that something was off with him.
14:18She always knew.
14:26I quickly looked for places to rent and found a spot.
14:33I moved out of the house.
14:35My dad thought I should call the police.
14:38He thought I should report it.
14:40But I was worried.
14:43What will my children think if later they
14:46learn that he has a record or charges come out of it?
14:51I was feeling guilty.
14:53So ultimately, I did not report it.
14:57The kids were very young, 2, 4, and 5.
15:02At the time, I was still open to sharing custody with him
15:06because, honestly, I wanted the kids to see their dad.
15:13I really didn't want to have any communication
15:15except for things related to the kids and child care.
15:20But Kevin was constantly trying to convince me to come back.
15:26He apologized all of the time.
15:28He told me that he wouldn't ever hit me again.
15:32He would oscillate between, I'm sorry, please come home,
15:35let's work on this, and we'll forget it, screw you.
15:40There were times where if I didn't pick up or respond,
15:45he would just blow up my phone and just call me
15:48incessantly back to back.
15:50Sometimes I'd have 40 missed calls.
15:53The fact that I didn't want to be with him
15:55just drove him insane.
15:58At one point, Kevin said, come home or else.
16:06And I was like, oh, my God, I don't want to be with him.
16:10And I said, or else what?
16:13And he said, or else I'm going to file for child support,
16:18alimony, and full custody.
16:21And if I don't get it, I'm going to kill you.
16:23I'm sorry.
16:36This is the place that I moved into when I left Kevin.
16:43I still didn't even really think that the death
16:47threats were serious.
16:49I really didn't think it's something
16:50go through with, or risk being caught in losing his freedom.
16:55♪
16:58♪
17:05I had come home from dance practice.
17:08I parked my car in front of the garage.
17:12I opened the door, and as soon as I went to put my feet out,
17:19I was hit over the head.
17:22I was completely blindsided.
17:25One after another, hit over the head.
17:28I'm in the driver's seat, feet out,
17:31trying to kick back, block my face.
17:34I had a bunch of blood in my eyes.
17:36I start to panic.
17:38How am I going to make it?
17:39♪
17:42And then it just stopped,
17:45and he left.
17:50My vision was really blurry,
17:53and I'm trying not to pass out,
17:54because I'm like, I have to call 911.
17:57I got a hold of my phone, and I called 911.
18:00♪
18:06I was terrified to learn that she was assaulted,
18:11beaten, left for dead, and in a hospital.
18:15♪
18:17I was floored.
18:21I couldn't believe the severity of the attack.
18:25My face is split open.
18:28I can't move my arm.
18:31I had broken teeth and bruises on my legs and arms.
18:35♪
18:39An officer came in, and I said,
18:42I've been assaulted.
18:43Kevin Lewis did this.
18:45Here's his address.
18:46Here's what he looks like.
18:48And then he asked me, did you see his face?
18:53No, I don't think so.
18:54From having a bunch of blood in my eyes,
18:57they said, did he say anything?
18:59Nope.
19:01And he said they were unable to make an arrest
19:05because I couldn't positively identify him.
19:08I know it was him.
19:09Who else would want to do this?
19:11Who's going to hide in the bushes
19:13outside of my driveway and harm me?
19:15So I knew it was him, but apparently that was not enough.
19:20The police did go to his house,
19:23and they see him rolling in on his bicycle.
19:27And it's like, you know, 12-something a.m.
19:31after midnight.
19:32And it was suspicious.
19:35He's out on his bike, super late at night,
19:40no flashlight, no cell phone, dark clothing.
19:44But that still wasn't enough.
19:48It just blows my mind.
19:50Was Kevin a monster all along, and I just didn't know it?
19:56Or did he become that way because I tried to leave him?
20:03Amanda was so fearless.
20:06This was fuel for her fire.
20:09She was putting her nose down and ready to take down Kevin.
20:17I wasn't scared of Kevin.
20:20I actually made a Facebook post that said,
20:23if you want to hold me down, you'll have to kill me.
20:25I decided to file charges for both assaults,
20:31which I had documented, and I had photographs.
20:34And I stating that, you know, it was him, he was there.
20:39I immediately went to courthouse and tried
20:42to file the protection order.
20:45Because of the nature of the incident,
20:50the kids were often taken to the hospital.
20:53I was a nanny for the Lewis family in 2017.
20:58I found out through Facebook that Amanda had gotten assaulted
21:03and asked her if it was Kevin right away,
21:08and if there was a plan in place to get the kids out.
21:12It was a no-brainer that she was going to get the kids out.
21:17I was a nanny for the Lewis family in 2017.
21:23He couldn't have contact.
21:28When I got the protection order, Kevin
21:31was supposed to be served that Thursday,
21:33immediately when he got off work.
21:36So I called up Abigail.
21:38I said, I got full custody of the kids,
21:42and I'm going to pick them up.
21:48The cops were able to serve him with the no-contact order.
21:53The protection order stated that he wasn't to come
21:58near me or the children.
22:02Kevin tried to file for child support, full custody, alimony.
22:08He wanted me to pay him like $8,000-something a month,
22:12and it was just insane.
22:16In August 2017, we had a court hearing
22:21where he was essentially denied everything
22:26that he was requesting.
22:28The custody remained with me.
22:30And in fact, the judge said, you have to pay some child support.
22:36And he didn't get any alimony either.
22:39And so that set him off.
22:41He was very angry.
22:44He did promise me that if he didn't get those things,
22:47he was going to kill me.
22:52I was scared for her, scared for the kids.
22:55I was always nervous just as an employee,
22:59because I wouldn't know what to do if something went wrong,
23:03I guess.
23:04So when Amanda got full custody of the kids,
23:11she was working full-time and overtime.
23:15But I couldn't do a full-time live-in situation.
23:20So Alicia would be over at the house
23:23constantly helping with the kids.
23:25My kids loved her and Uncle Brad also.
23:31They had just gotten married, and she was looking forward
23:34to having kids of her own.
23:38Amanda and Alicia were really close.
23:41Like, you could tell there was just love there and support
23:46for one another.
23:50At the time, I was working at Providence Hospital.
23:54I was the director of anesthesia on the administration side.
23:58I oversaw, I think, 80-something physicians
24:02and nurse anesthetists.
24:03And so it was a lot of people.
24:06And then there was a big conference in New York
24:09where all of the directors gathered and met there.
24:14Alicia and Abigail were on the board of directors
24:19and were caring for the kids while I was away.
24:25It was a normal night.
24:27We got the kids ready for bed.
24:30Usually, I would stay up really late binging TV shows.
24:36And because Alicia was staying on the couch,
24:40I didn't want to impinge.
24:43So I went to bed at midnight.
24:45Bunky and I were messaging.
24:48It was really late, like almost 3 AM in New York.
24:52I remember saying, I really gotta get to bed.
24:55And she said, OK, love you.
24:58She said, OK, love you.
25:17I woke up to two gunshots.
25:20And then two more gunshots went off.
25:27So I went down to investigate.
25:33I turned the corner of the banister.
25:36And I see Alicia is lying in a stream of blood.
25:47I caught my phone and called 911.
25:52911, what is the location of your emergency?
25:54Everett, Washington.
25:56I was sleeping in my room.
25:59I heard two pops, and it woke me up.
26:02She fell on the stairs.
26:05What's her name?
26:07Alicia.
26:07Are you with her right now?
26:09Yes.
26:10She's lying face down in her own blood.
26:16They asked if she was still breathing.
26:17But I knew she was gone.
26:22The girls were trying to come downstairs, too.
26:26And I'm yelling at them to stay upstairs.
26:34The police got there.
26:36The EMTs carried Eliana and Amaya down.
26:40But they were shielding their view of Alicia.
26:46Isaiah was on the big couch.
26:51He saw some of it.
26:54His eyes were so wide.
26:56So I ask if I can pick Isaiah up from the couch.
27:00And he, like, wrapped his legs so tight around me.
27:09The girls were trying to come downstairs.
27:11They were trying to get him to get up.
27:14The kids were asking where Auntie Punky was.
27:19They were asking who the lady was lying on the floor.
27:27They must have been terrified.
27:30And then after that, the detective
27:33brought the kids to Amanda's parents' farm.
27:37The next day, I was in meetings all morning.
27:41And I remember my phone ringing.
27:45It was my dad.
27:49And then he tried to call again, which was not abnormal.
27:56My dad always calls and then calls again.
28:00And I was like, what's going on?
28:02It's not abnormal.
28:03My dad always calls and then calls again.
28:07But then the phone rang a third time.
28:10That's odd, because that's not normal.
28:14So I answered the call.
28:16And he said, Amanda.
28:17And the voice instantly was like, something's wrong.
28:28And he said, he killed her.
28:36He killed Punky.
28:47After that, it was a little bit of a blur.
28:51I threw my stuff in a suitcase and got
28:57on the first flight out of there.
29:00It was just so shocking.
29:03I didn't know what was going on.
29:05I didn't know where my kids were.
29:08But I knew right away that it was Kevin.
29:17I just knew he was trying to kill me.
29:22Those bullets were meant for me.
29:25I'd only been to sleep for a few hours.
29:32My alarm is going off.
29:36And then I realized it's not my alarm.
29:38It's a phone call.
29:41It's my dad.
29:44And he says, son, I need you to get ready.
29:46I need you to wake up.
29:47I need you to listen to me.
29:49Your sister is dead.
29:56Dad said I would not stop screaming, no,
30:00for the next two minutes.
30:03I will never forget that moment.
30:06It was the worst moment of my life.
30:12I got up, stopped sobbing, and drove to my parents' house
30:18and sat with my mom.
30:20And we just cried.
30:23We knew that Kevin, for some reason, had killed Punky.
30:29But why would he shoot Punky?
30:33He's our brother-in-law.
30:34He would know that Punky is not Amanda.
30:38It doesn't make sense.
30:45I'm a deputy prosecuting attorney
30:47with the Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
30:50When I became involved in the case,
30:52I was aware that the homicide had occurred.
30:55It did not appear that Alicia Canales-McGuire had completely
30:59opened the door.
31:02There was no sign of entry into the residence at that point.
31:05So the initial thought was, while they felt it was
31:10potentially a random act, it didn't seem that way.
31:14Law enforcement, they start to narrow down and run down
31:18all of the significant others.
31:20So they did initially talk to Alicia's husband, Bradley,
31:23and they ruled Bradley out pretty quickly.
31:26There was some indication of a domestic violence
31:29history between Amanda Canales and Mr. Lewis
31:33due to reports from deputies who had responded
31:36to the residence in the past.
31:40Detectives actually went to talk to Kevin Lewis.
31:43He didn't give a whole lot of information at the time,
31:46but he indicated that he had been home during the night.
31:49And hadn't left the residence.
31:52Although there was a belief that Mr. Lewis was somehow
31:55involved, what his involvement was,
31:57we just weren't sure at that point in time.
32:02We were all constantly waiting for that phone call
32:06to find out that the police are doing something about it.
32:09But they can't prove it was him.
32:13Kevin had made a mistake.
32:16The wrong person had died.
32:17He's coming back to do it again, was our next thought.
32:22And are they going to kill the right person the next time?
32:25Does it matter?
32:27I didn't go outside unless I had a weapon on me.
32:35The funeral is another frustration
32:39because Kevin is out on the loose.
32:44And we had to keep the time and date of the funeral a secret
32:49because it would be an obvious known location for me.
32:53I had family members, cousins, and uncles
32:56outside standing guard.
32:59They didn't even come in because they
33:01were on the lookout for Kevin.
33:03And I just felt like it was really unfair that we couldn't
33:05even grieve properly.
33:08Everyone in the family was devastated.
33:12But as hurt as I was, I knew that the pain her husband Brad
33:22felt was tenfold.
33:25They had known each other their whole lives.
33:27And they did everything together.
33:29They really were each other's best friend.
33:32Watching him say goodbye to her before they closed the casket
33:39was one of the hardest things I've ever witnessed.
33:55Police found a woman who appears to be in her 20s
33:58dead from a gunshot wound.
33:59No suspect is in custody right now.
34:01But investigators are still trying to figure out
34:02exactly who pulled the trigger.
34:04The sheriff's spokeswoman says there were no eyewitnesses
34:06when the shots were fired.
34:07We're still following up on leads.
34:09This is an active homicide investigation.
34:11The detectives were very obscure with their updates.
34:17They really weren't getting a lot of new information.
34:19And days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months.
34:24Alicia Canales-McGuire was murdered five months ago.
34:28The killer was there for me and not my sister.
34:31She just was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
34:34It kind of hit a cold place at a time
34:36where they had their suspicions, and we
34:38knew what Amanda thought, but didn't have enough to tie it
34:42to Kevin at that point.
34:44There was nothing to move forward
34:46with any murder charges.
34:48Meanwhile, Kevin is going about his normal daily life.
34:54I had to live kind of looking over my shoulder
34:58for quite a while.
35:00And of course, my home was turned
35:02into a bloody crime scene.
35:05So I couldn't go back there, and certainly not with my kids
35:08and all the trauma that had just happened.
35:11So I moved into a shelter with the kids
35:15until I could find secure housing that
35:19was private and safe.
35:25While law enforcement had no leads,
35:27I was reviewing all the assault cases that Amanda had filed.
35:33After the second assault had taken place,
35:36I was trying to get him charged with the assault.
35:41But there was all this back and forth on which department
35:45to file it with, and it wasn't until the murder
35:48that things started moving forward with the assault
35:51charges, which is just another thing that's frustrating
35:55because if he had been locked up, this couldn't have happened.
35:59I filed two counts of second degree assault,
36:02both felony charges.
36:07A year after the murder, a year of him being out and about
36:14and me essentially being in hiding,
36:19he was found guilty on both of those felony assaults.
36:23Finally, he was incarcerated.
36:29You're kind of looking for this big relief
36:34that Kevin's behind bars, but it was a three-year sentence.
36:39Eventually, he'd be back.
36:43I lost a lot of faith that my sister was alive.
36:48I was hoping that she was alive, and that she was alive.
36:52I was hoping that my sister's murder was going to be solved.
36:56We were kind of at a dead end until there was a tip call that
37:09came in to the sheriff's office months later.
37:15At a party in Spokane, Washington,
37:19a female named Angelica was making comments about how she
37:24and her boyfriend killed someone.
37:26We were able to determine that Angelica was
37:29someone named Alexis Hale.
37:32This was really the break that we were looking for.
37:35There were things that Alexis was bragging about that
37:39hadn't been released that weren't
37:41part of the public record, which made the tip credible.
37:46As the case went on, there was determination
37:49that her boyfriend was a male named Jaredon Phelps.
37:55And then they determined Jaredon Phelps
37:57was Kevin Lewis's cousin.
38:00And that's the tip that kind of broke everything open.
38:05Law enforcement started to look into Ms. Hale's phone
38:09and Mr. Phelps's social media.
38:11They found videos on the night the actual homicide was carried
38:16out.
38:17The information from the warrants
38:18uncovered some of the Snapchat timestamps
38:21and metadata related to Jaredon Phelps's selfies,
38:24which included when something was posted.
38:27Snapchat, for a while, everybody believed the minute
38:31it was deleted from your Snapchat account, it was gone.
38:33And that information disappears.
38:35It doesn't necessarily disappear right away.
38:38Snapchat showed Alexis Hale and Jaredon Phelps together
38:42on the night of the homicide.
38:45The cell phone data put Alexis and Jaredon in the car together.
38:50Their cell phones were pinging off the same towers
38:52at the same times on the same drive.
38:55Mr. Phelps and Ms. Hale's phones were tracked from Spokane
39:01to Everett.
39:06Videos from Ms. Hale's phone showed them on Interstate 405
39:11moving towards Everett.
39:13In fact, there was indications that they had stopped
39:16at Mr. Lewis's home on the way to the location
39:21of the homicide.
39:24The next steps really were to arrest Ms. Hale and Mr. Phelps
39:29and find out if they were willing to talk
39:31to law enforcement or not.
39:41I've been probably thinking about for a very long time.
39:43It's here.
39:44I'm not bullshitting you.
39:46I've been in your phone.
39:47I've been in your social media.
39:49I know a lot of things that you don't know that I know.
39:53I know you pretty well by now from what you put out
39:57in your social media.
39:58I didn't come here on a phishing expedition.
40:01This is the real deal.
40:03OK, so I need you to tell me how you got
40:06suckered into this in the first place.
40:09Jaredon Phelps was reluctant at first to provide information.
40:14As Detective Betts builds rapport with him.
40:21He began to open up more and provide more information.
40:39I asked if I knew any OGs that would do it.
40:42And I said, I would do it.
40:43Mr. Phelps said that he'd been contacted by Mr. Lewis,
40:48basically saying he was looking for a person
40:50to carry out a murder.
41:10To his house?
41:11To his house.
41:12Initially, Kevin Lewis, it indicated
41:15that he had been home during the night
41:16and hadn't left the residence.
41:19But when you start looking at the ring cameras
41:21from the surrounding neighborhoods,
41:23you see Kevin Lewis out of his house
41:25in the early morning hours, which
41:27are consistent with the time frame on the cell phone
41:29data from Jaredon Phelps and Alexis Hale at the time
41:33that they're there meeting with Kevin.
41:35When you approach the house, did he
41:37tell you to approach a certain way?
41:39No.
41:40OK.
41:43Was there a conversation with him and you guys at all?
41:46Alexis had asked if there was going to be kids or whatever.
41:50So when she asked that question, what answer does Kevin give?
41:54Yeah, there will be kids in the house.
41:57How did that make you feel when you heard that?
41:59I know that it didn't change my mind on the decision.
42:08I took a brief look at the picture.
42:10He showed me a picture.
42:12But he showed you a photo of the person
42:13that he wants you to kill.
42:15Correct.
42:16OK.
42:17And best thing you can tell when a female answers the door.
42:21Yeah, whoever was opening the door was getting shot.
42:25OK, so looking at the photo, it didn't really matter.
42:28Didn't.
42:30There were videos of the vehicle that
42:34had been used to carry out the murder.
42:39The video that came from Marijuana Club 99
42:42catches the vehicle driving towards Amanda's residence
42:47on York Road.
42:48And you can see in the video this tire that
42:52has a very black distinctive look to it
42:54that is different than the other wheels on the car.
42:58Detective Betts looked at a picture of Mr. Phelps' car.
43:03It was missing a hubcap that was on the right front passenger
43:07side.
43:09So they drove to Amanda's house where
43:12they could effectuate what Kevin Lewis wanted,
43:15which was killing Amanda.
43:17They just had the wrong person in the house that night.
43:33Yeah, she had a plan about knocking for sure.
43:36OK.
43:37Yeah.
43:38And while she knocked, she knew that you were then going
43:40to shoot whoever opened the door.
43:41Correct.
43:42Alexis Hale was more of an instigator.
43:45When Jared and Phelps brought Kevin Lewis' offer
43:48to kill Amanda, this wasn't someone
43:51who was saying that's a bad idea,
43:53we shouldn't participate.
43:54This is someone who's saying, yeah, let's do it.
43:58The role she played was instrumental.
44:01Alicia was not going to open the door for a young male
44:04with his hood up.
44:05But opening the door for a young, panicked 15-year-old,
44:11it's a little bit of a ruse.
44:16When Alicia Canales-McGuire answered the door
44:20is when the initial shots were taken.
44:24Mr. Phelps then approached the door closer.
44:27Was there a cause between the first shots
44:29and the second batch of shots?
44:30Or was this all continuous as you're walking up?
44:33Or how did that work?
44:37The shots all came out within the time that the doors opened.
44:43She walked away.
44:45Lexi, please.
44:47And I didn't advance onto the porch
44:51until she closed the door.
44:54She had fell down and was leaning against the door.
44:57When you pushed the door open, what
44:58happened again?
45:02Two more shots.
45:04What happened immediately after that?
45:07OK.
45:07Got in your car?
45:14There were also videos after the homicide of Mr. Phelps
45:18fanning money and comments that indicated that he had done
45:22something to obtain that money.
45:28About $2,400.
45:29OK.
45:30How much did Lexi get out of all this?
45:33$200.
45:35Snapchat records show him flashing cash
45:38at a time that was consistent with when he
45:41would have gotten it from Kevin.
45:42How did he give you the money?
45:43Inside the envelope.
45:45An envelope?
45:46What did the envelope look like?
45:47A bank envelope.
45:49Do you remember the name of the bank?
45:50Bank of America.
45:51Bank of America.
45:53Kevin Lewis's financial statements
45:54corroborated that he had access to that exact amount,
45:58that Jared and Phelps had said that he
46:01was paid for the murder.
46:02Fresh out of the bank.
46:05Ultimately, Mr. Lewis is really the mastermind
46:08behind the entire event.
46:11He is the one who hired Jared on Phelps for $2,400
46:15to carry out the homicide.
46:18We had enough to charge at that point.
46:20And so Kevin Lewis was charged with aggravated first degree
46:23murder.
46:26We always knew that Kevin was the person.
46:29But to find out that there was another person who
46:32pulled the trigger, finally, we could make sense of things.
46:39Because this whole thing was so confusing from the beginning,
46:43we just couldn't imagine Kevin shooting the wrong person.
46:49Kevin was already serving time from the assaults.
46:52And so he'd already done a few months in jail
46:54when the murder charges came in.
46:57It was a relief at that point to finally have
47:00some answers and some charges.
47:02We were all happy and excited.
47:05But we know we've still got a long road ahead.
47:09Charges are one thing.
47:11Then we've got to get through a trial.
47:13Ms. Hale and Mr. Phelps both pleaded guilty.
47:17Ms. Hale ended up receiving 15 years in prison.
47:22Jared and Phelps received almost 32 years.
47:27Kevin Lewis pled not guilty.
47:29The defense argued that the state
47:32hadn't proved that he was involved
47:33beyond a reasonable doubt.
47:34And they sought to cast him out of the trial.
47:39Beyond a reasonable doubt.
47:40And they sought to cast this as Kevin venting his frustrations
47:46about his divorce with Amanda.
47:48Jared and Phelps taking this upon himself
47:51to rectify a family member's problems.
47:59The trial was four weeks long.
48:04Jay's testimony was one of the most difficult parts.
48:07How Punky was hanging on to the doorknob
48:11and trying to protect my kids.
48:14And used her last breath trying to do that.
48:21Kevin showed zero remorse.
48:24I think that he really thought that he was going
48:28to get away with all of it.
48:32Kevin Lewis appeared nonchalant.
48:36He kind of sat and leaned back in his chair.
48:38He seemed almost disinterested.
48:40But the jury found Kevin Lewis guilty of aggravated first degree
48:43murder.
48:49The trial went as well as it could go.
48:53But nothing can equate for what he did.
48:58No punishment will make it just.
49:02And she's still gone.
49:04And it doesn't right that wrong.
49:12People tell me all the time it's not my fault.
49:16I understand that.
49:18Logically, I understand that.
49:20He did what he chose to do.
49:24But it's always going to be there.
49:25It's just I was the link between them.
49:35There's not a day that goes by that I don't think of her
49:39and what she did to not only save the kids, but to save me.
49:45Because I could have just as easily been behind that door.
49:50But I know how important it is to move forward for her.
49:58We all miss Punky.
49:59And we all miss her.
50:02We all miss Punky.
50:04And we feel it at every holiday and family gathering
50:09and every birthday.
50:13I think about Punky all the time.
50:17She was always there for me.
50:19Anytime I needed somebody, a support person, if you will,
50:22she was there.
50:26I have a commemorative tattoo for her on my shoulder.
50:33It just reminds me of her and makes me smile.
50:35And I think about all the fun that we
50:37have every time I see it.
50:41I'm always going to have guilt. But I deal with it
50:46by trying to spread awareness in terms of domestic violence,
50:51awareness and advocacy.
50:53I worked on getting a bill passed
50:56to redefine domestic violence to include coercive control.
51:01Coercive control is separate from physical harm.
51:05It's things that abusers do to manipulate and control
51:10their victim.
51:12That law passed.
51:15I have had dozens of people reach out to me
51:19and say that because of this, they've
51:21had the courage to leave, and I know that it's saved someone.
51:25And so that helps a little bit.
51:27And Alicia would want that.
51:31And I, in a way, feel like I have to live my life,
51:35but I have to live hers too.
51:37And so I just do my best.
