00:00Around 9 a.m. Thursday morning, police in Munich were alerted that a suspicious person
00:05appeared to be carrying a long gun in an area near the Israeli consulate and a Nazi-area
00:10documentation center. Upon arrival, they exchanged fire with the man, who is armed with an old
00:17make of firearm fitted with a mechanism allowing it to be fired repeatedly without manual reloading.
00:26The perpetrator was stopped by the police and probably died on the spot. As things stand
00:31at the moment, the witnesses have given no indications that there were any other perpetrators,
00:36so we now assume that the situation in Munich has been cleared up.
00:42No one else was injured in the incident. Police have identified the suspect as an 18-year-old
00:48Austrian national, but have not released his name. The motive behind the incident remains
00:53unclear, but it coincides with the 52nd anniversary of an anti-Israeli terrorism attack at the
00:59Munich Olympics. In 1972, Palestinian militants shot and abducted members of the Israeli delegation,
01:07leading to chaotic rescue efforts and the deaths of 11 Israeli team members, a West
01:13German police officer, and five of the assailants. Thursday's shooting also occurred near a museum
01:19examining the rise of the Nazi movement and the Israeli consulate, although the consulate
01:24was closed at the time. The incident occurs at a time of increased anti-Semitic violence
01:30and threats against Israeli citizens across Europe, stoked by tensions over the war in
01:35Gaza. The German government said that it would continue making the protection of Jewish and
01:40Israeli institutions a top priority.
