We've gone more than half a month with no named storms in the Atlantic, despite nearing the peak of hurricane season, but forecasters warn the quiet stretch is coming to an end.
Transcript
00:00Really, as we look at the big picture, eerily quiet, no active storms at the moment.
00:04We do have strong wind shear that has been lowering the threat near the U.S. into the
00:09weekend.
00:10I'll point out a couple of areas where the wind shear is stronger, kind of acting as
00:14roadblocks more or less.
00:15But we are watching the Gulf of Mexico into next week.
00:18How quiet has it been?
00:19Well, we had no new named storms form since Ernesto that was back on August 12th.
00:24So from August 13th to September 3rd, today the 4th.
00:28Last time we have had this kind of a stretch without a new named storm between those two
00:32benchmarks or in between those dates was back in 1968.
00:37This was the first Labor Day weekend with no storms active in the Atlantic, no named
00:41entities in 27 years.
00:43The quiet stretch will continue for a little bit.
00:46We do have some action out there with a couple of tropical waves.
00:48We've had some heavy rain into places near Jamaica, a couple of stronger tropical waves
00:52there.
00:53But there is a tropical wave there that's a little bit stronger.
00:56But as we get into the remainder of the month here, we're approximately here, again, approaching
01:02September 10th.
01:03There's still a lot of hurricane season to go.
01:05We're not quite at the full halfway point.
01:07We've had five named storms.
01:08We're still forecasting between about 11 and 15 more storms.
01:14So we're expecting to see 16 to 20, as you heard there from Alex Da Silva.
01:18There's a moderate chance that this disturbance near Jamaica will move west after crossing
01:24some land.
01:25This is an area of strong wind shear, also more strong wind shear with these deep purple
01:29zones here.
01:30After it crosses the landmass, we've got warm water over the Gulf.
01:33That's been present the whole season.
01:35We do expect to see some organization here.
01:37So there's a medium chance next week in the Bay of Campeche, also into the east-central
01:43Atlantic.
01:44Moderate chance of development in those areas.
