00:00The final sections of the new Weir footbridge have arrived in Sunderland marking a major milestone in its regeneration plans.
00:07With hopes of its opening to be in summer 2025, the £31 million structure will connect the sheepfolds with Keele Square in the city centre which will improve access to the Stadium of Light and a residential estate being built north of the river.
00:22Councillor Kevin Johnston, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Regeneration and Business at Sunderland City Council, said the structure is incredibly symbolic in the sense that it is bridging Sunderland's past and future.
00:33He also said a whole host of developments are either underway or set to be developed across both sides of the River Weir as part of the Riverside Sunderland Master Plan and this will play a key role in linking all those projects.
00:45As part of their master plan, they aim to deliver workspace for over 8,000 people as well as build 200 new homes over the next decade.
00:53The new Weir footbridge will stand 98 feet above the river and span 820 feet once fully constructed.
